Accumulation — An addition to atrader’s original market position.The first of three distinct phases ina major trend in which investors arebuying.
At-the-Money (ATM) — An optionwhose strike price is nearest thecurrent price of the underlyingdeliverable.
Call Option — A contract that givesthe buyer of the option the right butnot the obligation to take deliveryof the underlying security at aspecific price within a certain time.
Candlestick Charts — A chartingmethod, originally from Japan, inwhich the high and low are plottedas a single line and are referred to asshadows.
Directional Movement Index (DMI)— Developed by J. Welles Wilder,DMI measures market trend.
Distribution — Any set of relatedvalues described by an average (thatis, mean), which identifies itsmidpoint, a measure of spread (that
is, standard distribution), and a measureof its shape (that is, skew or kurtosis).
Greeks — Jargon; a loose termencapsulating a set of risk variablesused by options traders.
Head and Shoulders — When the middleprice peak of a given tradable is higherthan those around it.
In-the-Money (ITM) — A call option whosestrike price is lower than the stock orfuture’s price, or a put option whosestrike price is higher than the underlyingstock or future’s price.
Near-the-Money — An option with a strikeprice close to the current price of theunderlying tradable.
Out-of-the-Money (OTM) — A call optionwhose exercise (strike) price is abovethe current market price of theunderlying security or futures contract.
Overbought/Oversold Indicator — Anindicator that attempts to define whenprices have moved too far and too fast ineither direction and thus are vulnerableto a reaction.
Pairs Trading — Taking a long position
and a short position on two stocksin the same sector, creating a hedge.
Put Option — A contract to sell aspecified amount of a stock orcommodity at an agreed time at thestated exercise price.
Resistance — A price level at whichrising prices have stopped risingand either moved sideways orreversed direction; usually seen asa price chart pattern.
Signal — In the context of stock orcommodity time series historicaldata, this is usually daily or weeklyprices.
Strike Price — The price per unit atwhich the holder of an option mayreceive or deliver the underlyingunit; also known as the exerciseprice.
Support — A historical price level atwhich falling prices have stoppedfalling and either moved sidewaysor reversed direction; usually seenas a price chart pattern.
