Pre-harvest modelling by the Australian Macadamia Society (AMS) and the Department of Agriculture Fisheries & Forestry, Queensland had predicted a crop of 37,070 tonnes in-shell. In May the Australian Macadamia Handlers Association (AMHA) estimated a crop of around 38,000 tonnes in-shell based on the season and their collective experience. Forecast kernel supply also remains unchanged at 10,500 tonnes. The figure is based on actual and projected data to the end of July from the AMHA who represents 90% of all macadamia handling in Australia. Receivals to the end of July historically represent 80 to 90% of the final crop depending on weather conditions. “While many growers are reporting the season has finished already, prolonged rain for most of the early harvest means it is hard to be sure what remains to be picked up” says AMS CEO Jolyon Burnett. We are certainly hoping there is a wag in the tail as demand remains firm across the domestic and most export markets”. A further report will be provided by the AMS at the completion of the season in late November.
