TrailuserswillbedelightedwiththenewfivemileMarkC.AckelsonTrailthatwilllooparoundEasterLakeandimprovethequalityoflifeinsoutheasternPolkCounty.This10footwidepavedrecreationtrailwillallowwalkers,runners,bicyclists,androllerbladerstoaccessscenicviewsofEasterLakeandpassthroughPolkCounty’sonlyremainingcoveredbridge.
Thecompletedtrailwillbeoverfivemilesofoff-roadpavedtraileventuallyconnectingthepopularEwingandEasterLakeparkstodowntownDesMoinesandCarlisle(seeMapB).Parkusersandneighborswillappreciategreateraccesstothepark,enhancedoutdoorrecreationopportunities,andsafecommuterconnections.
PassageofthePolkCountyWaterandLandLegacybondreferenduminNovemberof2012hasallowedustomoveforwardwithmanypriorityprojectssuchastheMarkC.AckelsonTrail.ThisprojectisinpartnershipwiththeCityofDesMoines,PolkCountyConservation,andmanylocal,stateandfederalgrantfundingagencies.
