BUNDESWEHR GEOINFORMATION SERVICE

The central institution of the Bundeswehr Geoinformation Service (BGIS) is the Bundes-wehr Geoinformation Centre (BGIC). The BGIC is assigned to the Joint Support Service and

administratively subordinated to the Strategic Reconnaissance Command. The BGIC forms the core of the BGIS and constitutes the sole agency for all geoscientifi c affairs within the Bundes-wehr. It is in technical control of the BGIS activities and the one authority to exclusively assess all geoscientifi c factors for the Bundeswehr. In geoinformation affairs, the BGIC creates basics and prerequisites for Bundeswehr routine duty and operations. This allows effectively and effi ciently accomplishing the BGIS mission to identify any operation-relevant environmental infl uences, assess their impact in terms of space and time and support users by means of prepared geospatial and environmental information.

FOREWORD

Urbanisation, migration and disaster relief are topics that are almost omnipresent in the media of the 21st century. Frequently critical or crisis-related aspects are in the foreground, including (just to give a few selected examples) megacities out of control, migration flows triggered by economic and violent conflicts and inadequate or delayed disaster relief. It is obvious, however, that most crises in the context of urbanisations, migration and environmental disasters are not short-term developments but evolve over the long or medium term. It is therefore necessary to deal with these phenomena promptly and permanently, address them publicly and face up to the challenges resulting from them. The Armed Forces and the Administration as well as the Research sector and the economy depend on processes characterised by the division of labour, which lead to specialization in individual responsibilities and disciplines. However, the study of topics such as megacities, migration and disaster relief shows that in reality they are multi-faceted, complex and largely interdependent. Consequently, the approach to tackle these challenges must be an interdisciplinary rather than an intradisciplinary one. Comprehensive interaction and, above all, international cooperation are additional determining factors with increasing importance. The first European Geoinformation Symposium, to be jointly hosted by AFCEA Europe and the Bundeswehr Geoinformation Service (BGIS) with a broad participation of Government, Research and Science as well as Industry on October 20 - 22, 2015 in Berlin will zoom in on the complex challenges generated by this subject field.
