Our day incorporated the unpacking of the effecve teacher profile, workshops on the digital technology curriculum and a review of our current NCEA processes. We are looking forward to sharing our new knowledge with our students. Have a safe and blessed weekend. Te Aroha o te Atua Mrs Raechelle Taulu, Principal Congratulations Fr. Kevin An interview with the best chaplain in town… Mika: Why did you want to be a priest? Fr. Kevin: My mother, father and my grandparents always had great friends who were priests and they said it is a wonderful way to serve God. My mum and my grandmother specifically said if you want to bring love to people you should go out and be a hopeful, encouraging, joyful person and one of the best ways you can do that is through your faith. So it was just a maer of me for me, to be a priest is about sharing God’s love and Mary’s Gentleness to others Mika: What is the best thing about being a Marist Priest? Fr Kevin: Well, it is being like Mary - you know we have this thing with the Marist Sisters and the Marist Fathers where we say to think, act, and judge, and feel like Mary in all that we do and say and so if people have met us, they come away with a sense of fun, a sense of joy and a sense of giving, because that’s what Mary would have done. So for me the biggest thing being a Marist Priest is to make people understand of how Mary loves them and also we go to Jesus through Mary, through his Mum, so for Marist - parcularly for me - Mums are prey special because they’re the ones who sowed the seeds on how to be a good Marist Priest. Mika: If you had one message that you want us Marist Students to take away with us, what would it be? Fr. Kevin: One message is to be a person of joy, hope and compassion because our world really needs people living these qualies now.And you know that the word of hope is encouraging, so every me we encourage, or make people laugh we bring them the joy of Mary, inferring the hope that one day, because we are Marist men and women - parcularly Marist women at Marist College, when we get to heaven our Mother Mary is going to say "Come on" and you are a part of the family. From the PrincipalThis week we began the first of three scheduled parent/teacher interview opportunities. Parent/teacher interviews are a time to meet your daughter’s teachers, discover what progress they are making in their subjects and what their next learning steps need are in order to achieve personal excellence.

Parent interviews provide an opportunity to strengthen the communication between home and school. Learning conversations provide the platform to share academic achievements, insights into classroom behaviour and opportunities to plan for future support both academically and emotionally.

Even if you feel as if your daughter is progressing well at school, I strongly encourage all our parents to make the time to engage in these interviews.

Thank you to Mrs Tagomoa -Papali’i for organising our Fono. It was great to hear from so many alumnus. We are certainly blessed to have lots of successful pacific island women willing to share their stories with our current students. It was great to see the presence of so many of our community in attendance.

On Friday, our teachers participated in professional development. Just like our students we are life long learners. Our day incorporated the unpacking of the effective teacher profile, workshops on the digital technology curriculum and a review of our current NCEA processes. We are looking forward to sharing our new knowledge with our students.

CAREERS UPDATE

CAREERS EXPO 2020Mt Albert Grammar School once again welcomed Marist families to join their Careers Expo on Tuesday 4 August, and it was great to see many of our senior students and their families taking up the opportunity to attend this year.

All of the NZ universities were represented, as well as Unitec and MIT, many private training institutes such as MAINZ, NZ Institute of Sport, NZ College of Massage, NZ Chiropractic College, Crown Institute, International Tourism College, Media Design School, Whitecliffe Art School, Excel School of Performing Arts, Wings Flight Training School, Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Cut Above Hair Academy, NZ School of Food & Wine, and the NZ Police and Defence Forces. It was an excellent opportunity to talk in person with training providers about the programmes they offer, entry requirements, industry trends and future opportunities.

Many thanks to the Year 13 volunteers who ably represented Marist as hostesses to ensure our families felt welcome: Krystal Manu, Lily Bold, Aimee Aranha, Skyler Macfarlane, Nia Cherrington-Thomas, Nicky Michael, and Xavia Hayward.

GATEWAY RETAIL SUCCESS There is always a lot of interest in gaining experience with a Gateway Retail programme, but 2020 saw more keen participants than ever before. These courses usually involve spending 10 days in store during school holidays, gaining practical experience and also covering theory relating to teamwork, communication skills, personal presentation, merchandising of stock, and preventing theft and fraud. However, the lockdown prevented such courses being offered in April, and put future opportunities in doubt.

The external training providers who run the programmes, Gold Star Training and Service IQ, both had to change their programmes for the theory to be taught online, with the practical experience “to follow when possible”.

Sixteen Year 12 Marist students enrolled in these programmes during lockdown, and worked on the theory from home, in addition to their schoolwork. NZQA permitted the practical component to be reduced from 10 days to 5 days in store accordingly, and at the end of Term Two all of these students were looking forward to completing their courses with work placements during the July holidays. This proved difficult as the usual host stores, while open for business, advised us one week before the holidays that they were reluctant to take on students for work experience at present. However, some earnest appeals to stores in the local community and Marist family contacts resulted in opportunities for some of the students, and Service IQ was able to persuade The Warehouse and Warehouse Stationery, who normally don’t take students during school holidays, to make an exception for our students. Since then The Warehouse has announced company-wide redundancies and are not hosting any more students for work experience for the foreseeable future. Marist students were very blessed to have this opportunity at this time, and we greatly appreciate the stores who were willing to host: Fresh Collective Mt Albert, Good Thing Mt Albert, Farmers Henderson, The Warehouse New Lynn, Warehouse Stationery New Lynn. Please support these stores as they have supported us.

Jenni Catley, Gateway Coordinator.

Student comments: “I really enjoyed Gateway and it was a very good learning experience for me. The people I worked with were so incredible and taught me so many things and all of the theory work has given me all the information and skills I need for future jobs” – Chloe Tredgett

“The Gateway Programme was a great opportunity that we had the privilege of being a part of. In it we learned not just important workplace skills but also teamwork, responsibility and resilience. We absorbed a lot of information and did a lot of hard work but at the same time had heaps of fun!” – Ashlyn Vijay and Teresa Guo

“Gateway has been a great experience and has helped me build confidence and relevant skills in the workplace.” – Alison Koch

“Gateway has taught me how to work with different people with different personalities. It pushed me in working in an environment other than I am already used to (school and home)” – Giovana Gaugau

"Gateway was an incredible experience, not only did I have fun and meet awesome people but I gained so much knowledge and experience by getting the opportunity to work in the retail industry. If you have the chance to do it, do it!" – Stephanie Pillay

"The gateway experience was a great way to take a peak and grab an insight of the real world. It taught me of the integrity and commitment needed to do the bare minimum expected. I'm so grateful for this opportunity." – Cassandra Collamat

2nd XI HockeyAnother great game this week for the 2XI Hockey team. The team fought hard right throughout the game in very cold and rainy conditions. Cat earned Player of the Day for going hard the entire game, chasing the ball down and never giving up. Players were given the chance to try new positions this week, and it was great to see them all take this in their stride. It was a tight game and the final score was a 1:0 loss.

Marist Gold yr 8 HockeyA real lion hearted performance all round from the Marist girls. They all looked a bit daunted to face a team with a real goalie, but played with heart from the first whistle. The structure and link play is a work in progress but the girls adapted, ran hard, tackled strongly and created chances in both halves. Never did the girls stop and kept going to the final whistle, such great team spirit!

Year 7 FootballGreat games this evening. The Year 7s finished up 1:0 to Remuera Intermediate with an awesome goal in the second half from Beth Iloka perfectly timed with Mrs Taulu’s arrival on the sideline. Some great strikes at goal that just missed their mark from a number of the girls and strong defence too.

Netball

This week we had our 9A, 10A and Premier team compete at the Combined Points Tournament at Auckland Netball. This day was a chance for our girls to get out on the court to play some awesome netball.

The girls had a smashing day, a few wins and losses but none the less they enjoyed spending time with their team! Thank you to Justice, Tylah, and Te Aute for taking the time to support our teams by umpiring our games!

Our Year 7 and 8’s had another great night of grading games on Tuesday. We are looking forward to the rest of the season this term. Good Luck to our 8Gold netball team attending the Central Zone netball tournament on Friday.
