From Terry Corcoran: “Every day I’m not in the Obit page is a good day!” From Dan Edgar (Note from Spring 2017):

I retired after a year at Portsmouth, in May 2000. That was a fun year as far as enjoying New England and entertaining family and friends who came to visit. Work was difficult to settle into with so much reorganization chaos, as I'm sure most of the transferees found it, and not a few of the natives. After retirement Lavone and I moved to a small acreage a few miles south of Nampa, Idaho. Nampa is about 30 miles west of Boise in the Treasure Valley, semi-arid range land and sage brush but for the extensive irrigation canal system that makes the area very productive, seed crops and sugar beets being very common, large dairies (you will become very aware of the prevailing wind in some locals), but the famous potatoes not so much here. I suppose most people

are aware of Micron, a major solid-state electronics manufacturer in the valley. Hewlett Packard, Motive Power (railroad locomotives), and a number of other manufactures. Not a bad place, at all, to work and raise a family and you can get out of town, in any direction, …. in not so many minutes or miles and into the mountains, desert, lakes, and streams. So, what do we do? .... A little camping, some RV traveling, and enjoy the fellowship of friends and our church. Two of our kids and their families are here. Lavone's brother and sister also live here. We harvest the eggs from a few chickens, garden, and pull weeds. That was a real corker of a winter, spring is coming on strong (still get frost some mornings) and looking forward to summer. Sorry to miss most of the luncheon meetings but we still keep up with friends in Seattle and try to make the connection when able. The newsletter really helps. So, thanks again. Dan Edgar From Jim Kelly (Note from Spring 2017): Sorry we will not be able to make the (Spring) gathering. We (Marilyn and I) just returned from our 47th wedding anniversary cruise through the Panama Canal - Tampa, Fl. to Seattle. - with a great time, swimming with the stingray off Grand Cayman Island. Only thing we (Marilyn) caught was an awful cold. She is now on meds, and we are ready for that to break. Jim Kelly From Hal Sullivan (Note from June 2017): This email is to let you know that after living in the Seattle area for the past 54 years we have decided to move out of the area. We are moving to Bozeman MT into an assisted living facility and to be close to our only grandkids, age 5 and 7. We will be leaving Issaquah on June 12. Carolyn and I have both suffered a series of health issues over the last 2 years that has made it advisable. It was just getting too much for Carolyn to provide the care I need. The facility is Bozeman Lodge and our new address is: 1547 N Hunters Way, Apt 311 Bozeman MT 59718 We are going to join the other hip young people and try to use only a cell phone line. The phone number is 425-681-7862. If you would send all future email to my new email address [email protected]. Hal Sullivan

From John Anderson: We are continuing to enjoy our RV travels and extended summer stays in the PNW and in Minnesota while the extreme heat hits Tucson. Retirement is a fantastic lifestyle that we have adapted to with ease. Having more time to pursue hobbies - building Adirondack chairs for daughter's San Juan Island home, turning bowls on the wood lathe, chair caning - is great, as well. Regards, John & Melissa Anderson From Ray Castor: We won't be able to attend since we will be in Baja Mexico. For the next six months, we'll be traveling and at our cabin in Alaska for about 80% of the time. Travel includes Mexico, New York City, Brazil on the Amazon river, Hawaii, England, in Egypt and Jordan (with the Szenders), and finally back to Mexico for spring break with our kids and grandkids. Ray From Jeff and Penny Scott: We are so sorry to hear of Jim Tveit's passing. He and Violet were such great friends over the years. The MSEA is difficult for us because our number of trips to Seattle is limited and the MSEA seems to always happen just before or after one of our visits. The winter of 2016/17 was very difficult for us for a number of reasons.... our son-in-law Rich was killed in a skiing accident, I had back surgery on Dec 7th and shoulder surgery on March 8th and every appliance in the house gave up including the heat pump. Penny, bless her heart carried wood for two months until we could get a new heat pump installed. A recent bright spot though was a cruise to Alaska that we took in July with our family to celebrate our upcoming 50th wedding anniversary. Our daughter Carrie, son Chris and his friend Denise and my brother Cal and his wife Cora joined us for a wonderful 7-day trip. In a private ceremony, we were able to scatter some of Rich's ashes in Alaskan waters so it was cathartic for all of us. I am a HAM radio operator and I spend a significant amount of time with my local Central Oregon Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Team in La Pine, OR. We were activated to provide possible emergency communications assistance during the recent Solar Eclipse. Fortunately, the dire predictions were off the mark and except for very heavy traffic it all went off in a calm manner. Penny is playing a lot of golf with her lady friends and keeping me in line which is no easy task. That's all for now. Our door is always open to MSEA visitors so stop in and stay for a while when you're in the Bend, OR area. Cheers, Jeff and Penny Scott From Ken Prentiss: Ken and Mary Lou Prentiss are staying close to home in Spokane dealing with Ken's leukemia treatments. (Travel while you can!) Ken From Sharron and Al Schmidt (Bandon Oregon): We are both doing well among the sand, sea, and bogs. Cranberries are getting ready to harvest and the town is very busy. Just love being retired! Sharron

From: Clay and Flo Schule: The last couple of years we’ve been doing lots of traveling. Hawaii (first time), Italy, Jamaica, Scotland; and the latest, an Alaska Cruise (with the Crutchfields). However most of our time in the last year has been at our beach place in Moclips Washington. Aside from just having fun at the beach, we’ve been building a tiny house on wheels and an RV hook-up on the beach. I continue working (kinda retired) at Sound & Sea with old friends Lee Brissey, Judy Bruce, Pam Bower and Doug Crutchfield. Been a very busy last two years being the subcontracts manager. Luckily, I’m a virtual employee, but some of my coworkers think that means I’m a robot. See you all at lunch. Clay From Lee and Kathe Brissey: We’ve stayed pretty close to home so far this year, spending some time at our cabin on Center Island in the San Juans and traveling with the throngs (and with all the Brissey kids and Gkids) to John Day Oregon for the “Solar Eclipse on Route 26”. The weather was perfect and skies were clear.

It was an emotional two-minutes of totality for us all highlighted by the sudden mid-morning darkness, the temperature drop, and the exclamations from people all around us. It left an OMG impression and a life-long memory for the all of us, … especially, we hope, for the younger generations of the Brissey family.

Passages From Jim Eldred: On a sad note Sandy (Pebbles) Goulding succumbed to cancer in February at only 61 years, leaving a husband and 13-year-old daughter and friends who miss her. A note that we’d missed a prior passing: Sorry to say that Jim Messmer passed away 5/10/15. Jim Tveit: A colleague, dear friend, and active MSEA volunteer, Jim Tveit, Jr died on August 26, 2017 at age 70 in his home in Marysville, Washington from complications of diabetes. A Memorial Service was held Saturday, September 16, at the Evergreen Funeral Home in Everett, Washington. Donations can be made in Jim’s name to the American Diabetes Association at PO Box 15829, Arlington, VA 22215, or through their website at www.diabetes.org.
