Great help has arrived! Nancy Dettmann has moved on, so once again we are very behind but still working hard to catch up. We appreciate your patience most of last year. But the good news is we’ve hired a new employee! Her name is Megan Creighton, and she’s fantastic! She’ll have us caught up in no time! Megan comes to us from 6 years at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center, so if you’ve ever been involved in an event there, you probably know how capable Megan is. She is a Roswell native but now lives in Dexter. She and her husband Randy have a 1-year-old daughter, Lexi. Megan’s father Gary Corman is a mechanic with Eastern New Mexico Medical Center too. Stop by and meet the delightful Megan!

Marifrank and Megan at your service!

Rod Schumacher, interim CEO at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, spoke at the January 15 Healthsense talk at Senior Circle.

With more than 600 employees and 100 physicians and midlevels, the economic impact on the Roswell area is significant, he said. Including salaries and benefits, property and gross receipts taxes, charitable contributions and monies spent with local vendors, the total impact was close to $66 million last year.

ENMMC is the only hospital in the area

accredited by the stringent Joint Commission. We also have chest pain and Echo accredita-tion and mammography certification. And we’ve been a Joint Commission top performer 3 years in a row.

ENMMC is a 162-bed facility with 3 medical office buildings, 17 physician clinics and 23 employed providers.

The hospital sponsors and participates in CASA, Walk for Hope, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Senior Olympics, Boys and Girls Club and much more.

ENMMC Services

ENMMC’s services include family practice, pediatrics, OB/GYN, orthopedics, internal medicine, oncology, general surgery,

nephrology, pathology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, podiatry, psychiatry, interventional cardiology, ear nose and throat,

radiology, urology, pulmonology, interventional radiology and gastroenterology.

Its Emergency Department has a 30-minute service pledge.

And don’t forget the Senior Circle benefits. We can even help you find a doctor.

And if an inpatient, you get a free upgrade to a private room if one is available and your spouse or caregiver gets a free meal every day

you’re there. And you get a cafeteria discount any time!

Circle News — December 2015—January 2016—2

There aren’t enough words—or space—to thank all the people who offered to help this past year when we were so shorthanded. Thanks to all of you—you know who you are! **** Those who labeled the September-October- November newsletter were Barrie Atwood, Nancy Britton, Bill Davis, Bill Eaton, Jane Guest, Velma Henderson, Jerry McCormack, Norman Melvin and Ron Muhammad. As always, we’re grateful for their rapid response to our request!

**** Those who set up for the December birthday party were Ray Fortune, Jim Turner and Joann Vitale. Greeters were Marilyn Atwood and Marian Perkins. Servers were Ruth Crystal, Bernice Franklin, Jerry McCormack, Jessie Roberts and Joann Vitale. Will Cass was the barista, bartender, soda jerk. And those who set the room back up were Nancy Britton, Bill Davis, Ray Fortune, Joan Hall, Bob and Joan Rizzel and Joann Vitale. I wish I had Joann Vitale’s energy!!

**** We mostly ignore our birthday calling committee, so I’d like to thank them now: Marilyn Atwood, Nancy Britton, Carrol Dow, Berneice Frye, Ruby Hendricks, Connie Madrid, Kay Mangum, Gloria Cox, Marian Perkins, Anna PerMar, Joan Tye, Joann Vitale, Belen Montez and Judy McDonald. Calling and inviting members to the birthday parties was a suggestion from Shirley Brown years ago and it’s been very successful!

**** Thanks to A.L. Rose for sweeping millions of leaves from our front sidewalk—before the Goliath snow.

**** Thanks to Nancy Britton and her sister Linda Marquez from the Fort Worth area. Nancy visited Linda over the Christmas holiday and Linda loaded her up with goodies for Senior Circle—cakes, pies, cookies, turnovers, bread—you name it. We’re grateful to them both!

**** And speaking of goodies, we wish Debra Young of Pioneer Bank a wonderful retirement! Debra brought us snacks on behalf of Pioneer for many years. But not to worry—Juliana Halvorson will continue the tradition!

**** Thanks to James Wilson for bringing us some flameless candles for the front desk. They looked lovely by our poinsettia.

**** Thanks to Allan Helton, Doug Howell and Judy McDonald for assembling our new chairs!

****

The September birthday party set-up was done by Bill Davis, Ray Fortune, Jerry McCormack, Jim Turner and Joann Vitale. These notes are sketchy; the greeters aren’t shown, but I’m guessing it was Marilyn Atwood and Marian Perkins. Or maybe Joan Tye. Ray Fortune and Joann Vitale picked up the food as they always do. Will Cass was barista and the servers were Nancy Britton, Ruth Crystal, Jessie Roberts, Joann Vitale and a lady named Katherine. Bill Davis and Linda Stojanov directed traffic to the food line and Bill drew the numbers for the door prizes. Those reassembling the room after the party were Nancy Britton, Bill Davis, Ray Fortune, Ron Muhammad, Julie Spellman, Jim Turner and Joann Vitale. Gratitude to all!

**** Those who set up for the August birthday were Bill Davis, Ray Fortune, Chuch Russell and Joann Vitale. Marian Perkins and Joan Tye were greeters. Will Cass was barista. Servers were Ruth Crystal, Bernice Franklin, Jessie Roberts, Joan Tye and Joann Vitale. Virginia Poethig and Linda Stojanov monitored food traffic. Putting things back to right were Nancy Britton, Bill Davis, Ray Fortune, Ruby Hendricks, Gil and Phil Lucero, Gilbert Lucero and his friend Jonah Ramirez, Jessie Roberts and Joann Vitale. Thanks everyone!

**** In January, Ray Fortune, Jim Turner and Joann Vitale set up the party. The greeters were Barrie Atwood and Judy McDonald. Will Cass was barista/bartender/soda jerk. Servers were Ruth Crystal, Bernie Franklin, Jerry McCormack, Jessie Roberts and Joann Vitale. Megan and Linda Stojanov directed food traffic. Nancy Britton, Ruth Crystal, Bill Davis, Ray Fortune, Jessie Roberts and Joann Vitale put the room back together. Have you noticed it’s pretty much the same people every month?! Feel free to join them. I’m sure they’d appreciate the help.

Crochet class starts soon

Esther Crigler generously is offering to teach people to crochet. Her classes will be at 1 p.m. Thursdays beginning February 11. The regular stitching group meets at 2 p.m. and the newcomers would be welcome to stay. For the first class, Esther would like you to bring a G or H crochet hook and a skein of cotton yarn.

Birthday parties will feature local singers. Howard and Nellie Becker, the most romantic and devoted

couple I’ve ever known, will once again perform for our February /Valentine’s party. Marvin Roberts, who sang country music for us a few months ago, will come back in March to sing old-time gospel music in remembrance of Easter month. Frank Castro, new to us, will sing for us in April. He does it all—especially soft rock. Elvis is his favorite! We still love the Singin’ Seniors, but I can’t turn away great talent! I need to schedule them when I can!

December Movies

The movie Monday, January 4, is “Mr. Holmes.” Ian McKellen is Sherlock Holmes who quietly slips out of retirement to solve his final case which has been unsolved for 30 years and has haunted him. This 2014 movie is rated PG with some thematic elements, some disturbing images and incidental smoking. It runs 105 minutes.

Lunch Tuesday, January 5, is at Tinnie Deli.

To recognize Pearl Harbor Day, we’re showing “Little Boy” Monday, December 7. A 7-year-old boy is willing to do whatever it takes to bring his father home from World War II. The movie stars Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson. It’s rated PG-13 for some thematic material including violence. It runs 1 hour and 47 minutes.

“The Age of Adaline” has a wonderful cast—Blake Lively, Kathy Baker, Harrison Ford and Ellen Burstyn. Lively plays a 29-year-old who survives a near-death experience and from that day on never grows older. You can imagine what that would do to your love life! The movie, to be shown Monday, December 14, is rated PG-13 for a suggestive comment, runs 113 minutes.

“A Song for the Season,” the kind of sappy movie I love at Christmas! Gerald McRaney, Naomi Judd and Andy Griffith star. We’ll show it Monday, December 21. It was made in 2012, runs 90 minutes and is not rated.

And for some excitement, how about “San Andreas”? The infamous fault gives , triggering a 9+ earthquake in California. Dwayne Johnson, a search and rescue helicopter pilot, and his estranged wife, Carla Gugino, make their way from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. Come Monday, December 28, to find out if they make it. It’s rated PG-13 for intense disaster action and mayhem through-out and brief strong language. It runs 114 minutes.

Renew vows with your Valentine

Bob Power and Tom Blake will once again be on hand on Valentine’s Day to renew vows for interested couples. Valentine’s is on a Sunday and the ceremony will be at 3 p.m. We need to know who will be participating, so please call 623-2311 to get your name on the list.

Mayor to speak at Healthsense

Mayor Dennis Kintigh, who is a former FBI agent, and Robert Gillespie, a current FBI agent, will be at Senior Circle’s Healthsense Friday, December 18, to discuss scams and what to do if you become a target. Seniors are often targeted.

Healthsense is at 11:30 a.m. and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Changing of the guard

We’re so grateful to Cactus Sam’s RV Club of Roswell for the years they collected our aluminum cans. The proceeds they collected went to the wonderful Emma, therapy dog at CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). Unfortunately, the club is disbanding at the end of the year.

Before I even had time to worry about what we would do with our cans, I got a call from Pat Therrien. She and her late husband Dave were active in Cactus Sam’s and because they

lived very near Senior Circle, they often picked up our cans.

Pat is also active in the Mid-Day Lions Club and has offered to pick up our cans! The proceeds will go toward that club’s pet projects, buying eye glasses for Roswell children and seniors, and impoverished countries. You may know Senior Circle has collected glasses for many years for the Lions Club — and will continue to do so. Jim and Joan Hall have been collecting them for some time; prior to that Bernice Franklin did; and my memory doesn’t go back any further!

The International Lions Club paid for a machine, Kidssight, for use in Roswell, Hagerman and Dexter to help find defects in kids’ eyes. It’s a great organization and we’re happy to have a mutually beneficial arrangement with them! Thanks, Pat.

New Year approaches

It’s time to start making plans for 2016. For one, member Esther Crigler has offered to teach crochet to anyone interested. If you’ve been wanting to learn, or advance, give us a call and get on the list. We’ll talk to Esther and let her know how many are interested and together set a time and day. So be sure and leave your phone number too!

Happy Holidays!!

Circle News — December 2015—January 2016—12

January 4 we’ll show “Mr. “San Andreas” was scheduled to be shown the Monday when Goliath caused us to close all week! So we’re going to try again Monday, January 11. The infamous fault gives , triggering a 9+ earthquake in California. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a search and rescue helicopter pilot, and his estranged wife, Carla Gugino, make their way from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their only daughter. It’s a nail biter! Rated PG-13 for intense disaster action and mayhem throughout and brief strong language. It runs 114 minutes.

Here’s another fun one for January 18, “Ricki and the Flash.” Meryl Streep is such a versatile actress and this role is another

challenging one as she plays an aging rock singer still hoping to make it big. She returns to the home she abandoned for her career hoping she gets a shot at redemption and a chance to make things right. Kevin Kline stars as her ex-husband and her daughter is played by her real-life daughter. The wonderful Audra McDonald plays the not-so-new wife. And Rick Springfield is Streep’s band mate and boyfriend. It’s rated PG-13 fpr thematic material, brief drug content, sexuality and language. It runs 101 minutes.

Based on a true story, this one is about two “mature” men who decide to tackle the Appalachian Trail—all 2,190 miles of it! Starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson, “A Walk in the Woods” is mostly a comedy with a couple of thrills and lots of beautiful scenery. Come see it Monday, January 25. It’s rated R for language and some sexual references and is 104 minutes long.

The movie Monday, February 1 is “Calendar Girls,” from 2003 starring the fabulous Helen Mirren. A ladies group decides it needs to find a more compelling way to raise money for a new charity and decides to do a calendar—completely nude. The comedy is rated PG-13 for nudity, some language and drug-related material. It runs 108 minutes.

Lunch Tuesday, February 2, will be at Oasis.

Birthday fun

The December 9 birthday party features Christmas songs led by the Singin’ Seniors.

The January 13 party entertainment will be by Cibolo Springs, Jack and Cindy, and they will probably bring along Cindy’s brother, Marvin Roberts, who sang for us a couple of months ago. There’ll be a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll!

Circle News — December 2015—January 2016—14

February Movies The movie Monday, February 1, is “Calendar Girls” from 2003 starring the fabulous Helen Mirren. A ladies group decides it needs to find a more compelling way to raise money for a new charity and decides to do a calendar—completely nude. The comedy, a true story, is rated PG-13 for nudity, some language and drug-related material. It runs 108 minutes.

I’m anxious to see “War Room” because I’ve heard rave reviews about it. We’ll show it Monday, February 8. It’s described as “a compelling faith drama filled with humor and heart.” It’s rated PG for thematic elements throughout and runs 120 minutes.

Another true story, “The Walk” is called a love letter to the towers of the World Trade Center. Philippe Petit walked the immense void between towers. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, it will be shown Monday, February 15. It’s rated PG for thematic elements involving perilous situations and for some nudity, language brief drug references and smoking. It runs 123 minutes.

And still another true story. “Temple Grandin” is autistic but

through perseverance and determination, she emerged as a woman with an innate sensitivity and understanding of animal behavior. We’ll show it Monday, February 22. Because it’s an HBO movie, it’s not rated. It runs 109 minutes.

The next movie, “The Martian,” is nominated for Best Picture. And Matt Damon, the star, is nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The film is also nominated for production design, sound editing, sound mixing, visual effects and writing-adapted screenplay. So yes, it’s Oscar season again and this is the first I’ve received. The DVDs are slow in coming out. I have several more pre-ordered. We’ll show “The Martian” Monday, February 29. You probably know the story from all the publicity, but in case—Damon is on a manned mission to Mars and is presumed dead and left behind by his crew. But he’s still alive and must now find a way to contact Earth and survive on a barren planet with meager supplies and hope for a near impossible rescue. It’s rated PG-13 for some strong language, injury images and brief nudity. It runs 141 minutes.

October Birthdays

Lunch Tuesday, March 1, will be at Tinnie Deli.

The March 7 movie is “The Intern” starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, two previous Oscar winners. DeNiro is a 70-year-old widower who gets the chance to work as a senior intern at an online fashion start-up found-ed and run by the ambitious Hathaway. As the two generations collide, they also find friendship and someone to count on—each other. Rated PG-13 for some suggestive content and brief strong language. It runs 2 hours.
