This professional development was designed for monolingual and bilingual professionals, with the goal of reducing overrepresentation of linguistic minority students in Special Education (August 1999-June 2000).

Principal Investigator, co-designed and co-taught with Prof. Solange Lira, Bilingual Special Education Training: Curriculum Frameworks and Diversity. Sponsored by a $60,000 competitive grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education. This professional development was designed for monolingual and bilingual education professionals, with the primary goal of reducing overrepresentation of linguistic minorities in Special Education (June 1998-June 1999).

Principal Investigator – co-organized with the Bilingual Faculty Action Research Group a special professional development session for the Lesley College Faculty on “Ebonics and Bilingualism.” Speaker: Dr. Theresa Perry author of, The Ebonics Debate. Co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Education, The Lesley Achievement Center, and The Hood Project at Lesley (1999).

Principal Investigator, co-designed and co-taught – Addressing the Needs of Limited English Proficient Students-Curriculum Frameworks and Diversity Summer Institute and follow-up seminars. Sponsored by a $65,000 competitive grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education (1997-1998).

Initiated and co-organized with the Bilingual Faculty Action Research Group a special professional development session for College Faculty on “Bilingualism and the Education of Minority Language Students” Speaker: Dr. Jim Cummins internationally recognized researcher, speaker and author, from the University of Toronto, Canada. Co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Education, The Lesley Achievement Center, the Provost’s Office and the Hood Project at Lesley (1998).

Initiated and co-organized the Portuguese American Heritage Day Celebration for the Lesley community with support from the Lesley College Diversity Initiative. The main goal of this day was to promote the linguistic dimension of diversity. Highlights of this day included a luncheon for the Lesley community with foods from Brazil, Cape Verde & Portugal a keynote addressing the contributions of Portuguese Heritage Americans to our society, a panel (with representation from Azores, Brazil, Cape Verde & Portugal) and a Portuguese exhibit in the Main Library, Portuguese Heritage music, and poetry. The Lesley cafeteria participated in this event by offering a Portuguese lunch (1995).

Initiated and co-organized with Dr. Ann Larkin and Dr. Solange Lira the first Portuguese-Language course offering to the Lesley College Faculty to learn the Portuguese language and cultures. Supported by a grant from the Luso-American Foundation and the School of Education. This course was taught by Dr. Solange Lira (1995-1997).

Initiated and organized the Portuguese Writing Process Institute in collaboration with the Cambridge Public Schools (four days) with Professor Ana Viveiros (regarded as the best teacher educator in the Azores). This was supported by a grant from the Regional Government of the Azores (1994).

Initiated, invited and co-organized with Dr. Susan Gurry a very special lecture at Lesley College by the internationally renowned Professor Ruven Feuerstein from Israel on “Mediated Learning Experience”, a method currently used in over 76 countries (1993).

Initiated and organized the first Portuguese Literacy graduate course as a Summer Institute in collaboration with the Lowell Public School with Professor Sergio Niza, a leading European educator from Portugal. This institute was featured in the Lowell Sun Newspaper (1991).

Initiated and organized a full day of professional development for faculty on “Chapter 766: Changes in Special Education Regulations” With Marie Lindhal, Massachusetts Department of Education (1990).

Initiated, co-organized and co-taught with Dr. Pat Landurand a three day Summer Institute on Effective Instruction of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (1990).

Initiated, organized and directed yearly Summer Institutes on Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment I&II (1988-1995).

Initiated, organized and directed the Third Annual New England Conference in Special Education Resource Teaching: Bridging the Gap Between Regular and Special Education: The Golden Gate to Successful Learning. Keynote Speaker: Dr. Elliot Aronson from University of California and the author of The Jigsaw Classroom (Oct.1987).

UNITED STATESAmerican Association for Health Education in collaboration with the Council of Exceptional

Children – Trainer of Trainers in HIV infection and AIDS prevention Education for Individuals with Special Needs. A national project providing training to teams of teacher trainers/health educators/administrators. These two-day professional sessions were organized and co-sponsored by the State Department of Education across the United States such as Nebraska, Tennessee, Kentucky, New Jersey and Illinois. Selected as one of the three Special Education Teacher Educators in the country to be involved with this project. (1993-1997)

Massachusetts Department of Education – Statewide Professional Staff Developer – Bilingual Special Education Project. SECLEDS (1993-1996) Co-Designed with Dr. Patricia Medeiros Landurand and Dr. Nancy Cloud an 18 credit bilingual education certification program. Designed and taught the following courses: Dual Language Literacy, Non-discriminatory Assessment, Assessment in a Dual Language and Multisystem.

Staff Developer and Lead Consultant in Bilingual Special Education for the Multicultural Institute for Change – the first Dean’s Grant Project for post-doctoral faculty professional development in Bilingual/Multicultural Education. Faculty from six Massachusetts colleges participated in this initiative. Niza’s Model of Literacy and Assessment in Lisbon, Portugal. Sabbatical Research Project. A book is forth coming in collaboration with Professor Lira’s research on Paulo Freire. Professor Niza is a leading European Educator and his work has profound implications for teaching literacy and authentic assessment to non- majority school populations (on going).

ELL Faculty Survey. A research project of the ELL Taskforce to identify faculty knowledge base related to the Massachusetts Four Categories of training (First and Second Language, Sheltered English Instruction, Mela-O & Literacy ELLS) (Massachusetts Commissioner June 15 Memorandum)
