In behalf of the Board of Directors and members of the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners, I warmly welcome everyone to the MARHO Ruby Racing Festival.

This is the 19th edition of one of the most-awaited racing events on the calendar, and the longest-running racing festival. It began as a simple program called the “MARHO Breeders Cup” to promote the produce of local Thoroughbred breeders, and to provide them and horseowners with incentives and encouragement to continue their efforts in breeding and racing local horses.

Over the years, MARHO sustained its Breeders Cup program and even expanded it, in the face of economic challenges, offering bigger purses for its six championship races. Today it is an established tradition that is one of MARHO’s most significant accomplishments.

This is a most auspicious event because this year, MARHO is also celebrating its 40th founding anniversary. We thank all industry stakeholders who have contributed to the longevity of our organization and to the success of our various programs and initiatives.

Together let us face the future of racing with bright hopes and big visions that we can turn into reality with unity and mutual support.

Welcome, everyone, to the MARHO Ruby Racing Festival!

Over the 40 years since it was established, the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners has strived to be of service to the horseracing community, in the belief that all sectors must act in harmony for the entire industry to succeed.

In its own little way, MARHO has made its contributions to the industry and the sport, by means of the MARHO Racing Program which includes the Breeders Cup and Founders Cup racing festivals, and through other pro-active initiatives.

We thank our fellow industry members for their support of and participation in our events and gatherings, and anticipate more years of the same solid and enthusiastic camaraderie.

Our deep gratitude goes to all our sponsors, notably the Philippine Racing Commission, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, and the host racetrack Manila Jockey Club for backing the MARHO Ruby event.

To all the participants, best of luck, and to the racing fans, may you find this to be another memorable MARHO racefest!

message Thank you for joining us in celebrating the 40th founding anniversary of the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners, and the 19th staging of the MARHO Breeders Cup championships, dubbed this year the MARHO Ruby Racing Festival.

As a member of the racing industry and of MARHO for decades, and having served it as president for many years, I look back upon the accomplishments of this organization with pride. MARHO, being the oldest and biggest group of horseowners with a keen sense of responsibility to the community, passionately involves itself with industry issues that impact the development of the sport and the business of breeding and racing.

Through its Breeders Cup and Founders Cup racing festivals, MARHO supports the efforts of Thoroughbred breeders, horseowners, jockeys, trainers, and other members of the industry, providing hefty prizes and a chance to win fame and glory.

The gains we have made over the decades by staunchly supporting local breeding have resulted in a new breed of horses that consistently record faster times than those that were around when MARHO was founded forty years ago.

As we race into the future, we look forward to even better horses and a stronger racing and breeding industry, that will be part of the Philippine sporting and economic landscape for decades to come.

The Manila Jockey Club, Inc. (MJCI) proudly welcomes the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners (MARHO) in celebration of their Ruby Anniversary at San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite.

Likewise, we are honored to be hosting their weeklong MARHO Racing Festival, highlighted by the staging of the 19th MARHO Cup.

As the first horseowners’ organization in the country, MARHO has steadfastly supported the advancement of the local horse breeding industry. It has spearheaded the initiative of upgrading our local bloodstock to produce better, faster and stronger horses.

The organization has, over its forty years of existence, also elevated the standards of horse racing through proper education and training. Indeed, MARHO has become a prime mover of the Philippine horse racing industry and will remain at the helm of progress in the years ahead.

MJCI joins the industry in applauding the members and directors of MARHO for their efforts and dedication to the sport. It is a privilege to be a partner of this organization as it celebrates this historic milestone. We are thrilled to witness the special set of stakes races organized for the MARHO Ruby Festival.

Congratulations and good luck to all competitors.

I take pleasure in extending my best wishes on your Ruby (40th year) anniversary holding of the MARHO Racing Festival on 24, 29, and 30 November 2014.

As the first and oldest horseowners’ organization in the country, your members produced great runners like Ilocos King, Fiorella, Native Gift, Fair and Square, Skywalker, Wind Blown, and the present superhorse Hagdang Bato, to name a few.

As one of the strong pillars of the industry, MARHO is also responsible for maintaining the continuous growth and viability of horseracing in the country, one of the oldest diversions of man and also known as the Sport of Kings.

Again, my best wishes and rest assured of Philracom’s continued support.

SINCE its establishment in 1974 by

businessman and diplomat Eduardo M. Cojuangco Jr. with fourteen other horsemen, MARHO has grown to be the oldest and largest such group and an industry leader.

By Jenny Ortuoste

This year’s event colors are ruby and gold. Ruby is the gemstone traditionally associated with the 40th anniversary, and gold is a luxurious setting for this jewel of an event.

Ruby energizes, balances, and encourages

passion for life and “following your bliss.” It overcomes exhaustion, imparts vigor and potency, and promotes dynamic leadership.

Through the years, its officers, with the loyal support of its members, have laid a solid foundation of racing traditions.

Foremost among these is the MARHO Breeders’ Cup program, established in 1996 by then-MARHO president Aristeo G. Puyat together with eminent breeder and fellow MARHO leader Leonardo “Sandy” Javier Jr.

From a low-key racing festival with only two championships for 3YO horses, the program has grown into an annual tradition. The MARHO Cup Championship Day has gained so much popularity among racing fans that it is the most awaited event of the year. The 2004 edition broke all sales records when it was held at Santa Ana Park in Makati City.

Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur Abalos, who was elected MARHO president in 2005, arranged that year’s edition of the MBC, the tenth anniversary of the event. “A Decade of Champions” was the theme

for that year, in celebration of ten glorious years of producing champions and rewarding excellence in the sport.

He also took charge of MARHO activities from 2006 to 2009, including the MARHO Founders’ Cup and the Jade MARHO Breeders’ Cup of 2009, commemorating MARHO’s 35th anniversary.

In 2010, MARHO’s newly-elected president, Eric Tagle, carried on the revered MARHO legacy by way of the 15th MARHO Cup Championships, tagged “MARHO Kinse,” and the succeeding “MARHO Swift Sixteen,” “MARHO Daisy-Siete,” and “MARHO 18th Edition.”

This year is the first under the leadership of acting president Tony de Ubago. MARHO’s directors, members, and staff proudly present the six major championship races and 28 trophy races for MARHO Ruby, the 19th staging of the event, in celebration of the organization’s landmark 40th anniversary. F

The MARHO StoryIn the early 1970s, a group of dedicated horsemen

encountered problems in sourcing a consistent supply of oats for their racehorses. Bound by a common need, they sought to solve their dilemma together.

Their efforts were so effective that in 1974, they established the first horseowners’ organization in the country - the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners (MARHO).

The founding members were Eduardo Cojuangco Jr., Antonio Araneta, Macario Asistio, Angel Castano, Jose Cojuangco Jr., Pedro Cojuangco, Elias Coscolluela, Emilio Espinosa, Asterio Favis, Eric Moreno, Jose Revilla, Isidro Rodriguez, Constante Rubio, Samuel Sharuff, and Conrado Trinidad.

The present MARHO Board of Directors and members recognize the legacy of these fifteen horsemen and strive to continue the mission that they began, with forward-looking vision and innovative solutions attuned to the changing times. F

most of them longshots trained by veteran trainer Ruben Tupas.

In the Santa Ana Park-MARHO Cup Sprint (1,000 meters), favorite Fierce and Fiery won by a length-and-a-half with a time of 1:01.6 (12’-22-27). The 4YO bay filly owned by Leandro Naval was ridden by Daniel Camañero and trained by Tupas.

Tupas scored again in the Philippine Racing Commission – MARHO Cup Juvenile Fillies with longshot Five Star, who flashed past another dark horse, Congregation, to stun racing fans and participants alike. Owned by Antonio Tan and steered by Jesse Guce, the filly posted a time of 1:46.6 for the mile (26’-25’-26-28’).

Another lightly-regarded horse, Spinning Ridge, grabbed the win in the Philracom – MARHO Cup Juvenile Colts. This one is trained by Nestor Manalang and owned by Sta. Clara Stockfarm (also the breeder of the colt). Spinning Ridge posted 1:45 for the mile (27’-26-25-26’).

The rain of longshots and the Tupas winning streak was extended by Sea Princess in the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office- MARHO Cup Filly Mile. Guided by Patricio Dilema, the HerminioEsguerra-owned-and-bred filly beat Cheese Blanca, favorite Cat’s Diamond, and Jahan, in that order, clocking 1:45.8 (27’-26-24’-27’).

This was 17th running of the event, titled “MARHO Daisy-siete: Racing is Blooming.” Founded and organized by the Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners, this event is the longest sustained racing festival of the sport.

Last year’s juvenile champion and this year’s 3YO star, HagdangBato, bred by Abalos, posted a time of 1:43.6 (26’-25-24’-27). And yet again, this one’s trained by Tupas.

It was longshot time again the million-peso San Miguel Beer-MARHO Cup Classic, with Lucban Mayor Marvin LouiVillaseñor’sGastambide taking top honors. Ridden by John Paolo Guce, the 5YO horse is trained by Dave de la Cruz and was bred by Esguerra on his Herma Farm & Stud facility in Batangas.

Prime Rate came in second, Barkley took third, and the favorite Lord of War fourth.

A touching moment occurred when MARHO president emeritus AristeoPuyat’s Paris Melody won the Andok’sLitson Corporation- MARHO Trophy race. Puyat received his award from Andok’s owner and MARHO chairman, Mayor Leonardo Javier. The two horseowners and breeders founded the MARHO Cup championships in 1995 and still contribute their efforts every year to ensure the success of the event.

Hagdang Bato Wins MARHO Classic

By Jenny Ortuoste

THE Metropolitan Association of Race Horse Owners (MARHO) staged their iconic championship races on 24 Nov. 2013 at Santa

Ana Park for the 18th time, with much success as evinced by the day’s outcome.

Hagdang Bato, with jockey Jonathan B. Hernandez aboard, wins the MARHO 18th Edition Classic.

Instead of the usual 12 or 13, 15 races were held, six of which were championship events.

As expected, MARHO Past President and Mandaluyong Mayor BenhurAbalos’s track idol HagdangBato easily won the San Miguel Beer-MARHO Cup Classic carrying 57 kgs., pulverizing the meager field wire-to-wire under the double-wrapped reins of Jonathan Hernandez.

The 4YO son of Quaker Ridge out of Fire Down Under, also bred by Abalos, earned a purse of P830,000for his 11-length victory that was a tuneup race for the December 1 Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) Presidential Gold Cup, where HagdangBato was himself the defending champion.

Royal Jewels placed second in the MARHO Classic, Native Land third, and Action Sailor fourth and last. The time for the race was 2:07 (26’-25’-25’-24-25) for 2,000 meters.

Patrick Uy’s filly The Lady Wins proved to have a prophetic name when she won the Philippine Racing Commission-MARHO Cup Juvenile Fillies stakes race, running off the pace from frontrunner Miss Bianca who faded in the stretch.

Hagdang Bato Wins MARHO Classic

This allowed the Significant Hill-Humble Beginnings progeny bred by SC Stockfarm and ridden by Patricio Dilema to win by two.

The clock stopped at 1:45.8 (25’-25-26-29) for the mile.

Roman Charm came in second, That Is Mine third, and Miss Bianca fourth and last.

The PCSO-MARHO Cup 3YO Filly Mile honors went to Joseph Dyhengco’s Eurasian (Deputy Bodman-Eurobucks, bred by Herma Farms and Stud) who ran off the pace from Viktoria.

Eurasian, under the guidance of JeffrilZarate, grabbed the lead by the home and clocked 1:44.2.

Five Star placed second, Queen Quaker third (despite suffering epistaxis at the gate, which caused a slight delay), and Humble Submission fourth.

It was Caloocan City Vice-Mayor MacarioAsistio III’s Biseng-Bise in the Philracom-MARHO Juvenile Colts stakes, who raced in front all the way under Mark Alvarez to earn P430,000 for first.

The Reenact-Real Queen colt bred by Asistio posted a time of

1:43.6 (26’-24-25’-27) for 1,600 meters and won by two.

High Grader, Mr. Bond, and Young Turk were the placers, in that order.

The top prize of P430,000 in the San Miguel Beer-MARHO Cup 3YO Colt Mile went to Hot and Spicy under Fernando Raquel Jr., who scored an upset over Boss Jaden who was an entry in the PCSO Gold Cup that year.

Stand in Awe, Spinning Ridge, and Be Humble were the placers.

SC Stockfarm’s veteran runner Lord Of War crowned himself the Santa Ana Park-MARHO Cup Sprinter of 2013 by beating Market Value, Brother Barack, and Watershed in that order over 1,000 meters.

The six championship races allotted P20,000 each as a donation to supertyphoon Yolanda/Haiyan victims, while P10,000 was donated for each of the trophy races. F

the 7yo mare is expected to give another early pacer, Karapatan, a good race at the lead.

A younger mare from the Roxas stable, Karapatan is expected to shoot to the lead as it is wont to do in almost all of its races. Clocking a flat 58 seconds last April 27, this 5yo dark bay mare is expected to shadow Carriedo to the finish line. It has displayed flexibility in past races and has proven to be a closer in longer races under different jockeys, although JB Guce has been riding it fast and even to the finish in recent races.

While the two early pacers are battling it out in front, Joseph Dyhengco’s Eurasian is poised to take the lead if and when the two front runners lose wind. Eurasian has clocked an excellent time of 1 minute in

its 1,000-meter runs in 2012. Although not placing well in its recent runs in longer races, its shorter sprints give him an even chance of snatching a win this time.

SC Stockfarm’s Lord of War has been doing well in 1,400- and 1,500-meter distances and is known to be a favorite among longshot punters owing to its running style of chasing the leader from the back. Lord of War can be a god of the tracks, too, as it can run a perfect sprint as it did last Sept. 6, clocking 1:33.4 in a 1,500-meter race.

Its coupled entry from the same stable, Nemesis, is the sprinter between the two. Placing first or second in its recent runs, Nemesis likes to stay just behind the early starters and wins the race with strength to spar. Most comfortable in 1,300- and 1,400-meter races, this 3yo mare can easily finish a short race.

Longshot punters have a pick in Market Value owing to its running style of staying in the middle of the pack. This 7yo mare from Puyat’s stable of winners runs best by not challenging early leaders.

Its steady run from the middle to the top of the ladder hopefully will

take it to the finish in this short but fast sprint race. F

Four fillies by Hook and Ladder will show whose dam matters. Princess Meili, out of Feverishly, has the best 1,400-meter finish at 1:23 and displays the running style of a closer.

Another filly out of Hook and Ladder, Epic, likes to lead to the finish and showed a best time

of 1:23.6 in a 1,300-meter race. It placed sixth in its last 1,400-meter run and clocked a decent 1:24.8, losing wind only at the last post after leading the pack in the first two posts.

its progeny, having just recently run its novato race followed by a longshot win with a 1:23’ for the 1,300-meters.

Hook Shot, out of Local Rules, is a presser to look out for. It placed third in its last run in a 1,300-meter race and clocked 1:22.4.

Surplus Queen (Key Apo x New Star Lady), and Takeitorleaveit (Tempestous Wind x Cat’s Jewel), are two new runners displaying decent running times in their novato runs.

Clandestine (Quaker Ridge x Jazzart) may stay in the race long enough to finish owing to its running style. It placed third in its last 1,400-meter race at Metro Turf with a time of 1:26.6.

Cat’s Thunder (Cat Brulay x Regal Boom) runs steady in the middle of the pack. It finished first in its last 1,400-meter race with a time of 1:25 and ahead of Clandestine by eight lengths.

Leona Lolita (Art Moderne x Syrinx) is an early presser and may just find the lead to the finish uncontested but Epic, Surplus Queen, and Takeitorleaveit will likely be there in front to take the fun away and if the speed battle materializes we can be sure that Princess Meili, Cat’s Thunder, and Hook Shot will capitalize on it to their advantage.

The race will prove to be a display of steady and powerful running with all horses displaying a tendency to pace themselves until they get to the finish. F

JEBEl Ali? Karangalan? Dixie Storm?Of the colts entered in this race, judging by their recent runs, these three

have the better records for hurdling this 1,500-meter race. Jebel Ali boasts a 1:29’ for the 1,400 meters. Impressive as that clocking may seem, the additional 100 meters will play an important factor in this best-of-the best contest.

Karangalan was one of Jebel Ali’s victims in the race where that time was registered. But look at the post positions of the former in the same race at 9-7-8-3, finishing only six lengths behind the winner, to determine why I am not ruling out a comeback.

Neither should the poor 1:25’ for the 1,300 meters which Dixie Storm made when it placed second to its stable mate last Sept. 27 dishearten its fans. The 1:23’ for the

same distance it registered in August should

keep the spirits of Dixie Storm’s connections high, not to

mention the 1:46’ exercise run for the mile it made in October.

A participating stable mate, Sky Hook, a Hook and Ladder progeny, is no push-over and is versatile enough to run as pacer or a finisher.

Completing the cast of runners are Cat Express (Cat Brulay x Starlight Express), Alakdan (Telesto-Dapitan), Bangkal Too (Quaker Ridge x Miss Fantastic), and Super Spicy (Real Spicy x Kayumanggi). F

An easy choice in this race is Marinx, which has participated competitively in nearly all distances, including the mile. Her most recent time for the mile at San Lazaro is a not-so-brilliant 1:47’ when she was defeated by Low Profile but her 1:35 performance for the 1,500 meters back in August indicates that she can do better not only in that distance but also for the mile.

The chink in Marinx’s armor is that she runs best acting as pacer for the race and this is probably a weakness which

the other entries may capitalize on.

If an early challenge for the lead is presented, then

those lagging behind like Chiefkeefsosa

and Yes I Can will have a chance

to win this. Otherwise,

the race will be over in no time. F

And why not? Most of the runners here have at one time or another lost to either Kanlaon or King Bull. Track considered, the 1:44 or so made by the two last Sept. 28 at SLLP appears to be a shade better than the others in the field. If we use the 1,500 clocking of King Bull to compute what he can make for the mile, we will not be surprised if he can achieve a 1:42 or better.

THIS early, the tandem of Kanlaon (Bwana Bull x Never left) and King Bull (Bwana Bull x Nothing Impossible) appears formidable.

With both runners having had exposure to mile competitions and even longer distances, their proud owner, Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos, has reasons to expect no less than the top plum.

Manalig Ka (Real Spicy x Tatler Cover) has been steadily improving and cannot be counted out. Left unbothered for, say, two quarters, he may just get the rhythm going and take the fight out of the competition.

His stable mate Mr. Bond (Alim x Flavor of the Month) is no pushover either and from all indications this runner will likely be attacking the lead at the stretch. Thus the Esguerra stable too has a right to be optimistic.

Mabsoy (Art Moderne x Springstreetballet) has shown us in recent runs that he has a second wind and has staying power. Expected to stay in the third or fourth spot in the early going, his third canto charge can spell the difference.

Wild Talk (With Class x Rumors) may adopt the same tactic he used in his May 17 run for the mile in Malvar, where he showed that he can run as a back marker and rally from behind. Wild Talk’s June 21 performance for the 1,800 meters in Naic, in which race he led for three quarters, shows that he can opt for the early lead and give the other pacers in this race a run for their money.

The other contenders in this race are High Grader (Significant Hill x Socsargen), Mud Slide Slim (Quaker Ridge x Maria Makiling) and Young Turk (Tempestuous Wind x Special Edition). F

Interestingly, while all the participants have up-front-speed, judging by their recent runs most of the entries are hesitant to take the early lead.

If I may hazard a probable scenario, Cat’s Diamond (Ultimate Goal x Cat’s Gold), Hot and Spicy (Real Spicy x Bulakeña), Royal Jewels (Royal Premiere x Cat’s Jewel), and Immaculate (With Class x Royal Chapel) will be in the lead pack, while El Libertador

(Perfect Cut x Savannah Wind), Borjkhalifa (Wind Blown x Sustained Pressure) and Boss Jaden (Real Spicy x Tereshkova) will be in the second pack, all pretending to be disinterested as to who is leading.

The pacer in the lead pack will probably change once in a while but with none trying to put much distance between them and the others, until the late second or early third canto of the race when

– WHAM! everyone will try for that lead, with those in the second pack getting more and more excited.

Come the home stretch, the horses will be ridden hard by the jockeys like there was no tomorrow. Prediction? My choices are Hot and Spicy, Boss Jaden, and Borjkhalifa, but despite choosing three of seven entries, I could be wrong. This race is exceptionally well-balanced, so follow your heart! F

My Fascinationwith Horseracing

By Philip M. Lustre Jr.

MY fascination with horseracing started when I was wide-eyed ten-year

old lad, who got curious with the ways of the world, including its idiosyncrasies. I saw the older men in our neighborhood in the working class Manila district of Tondo discussing animatedly the recent races they watched at the San Lazaro Hippodrome, which was two short rides away from our place.

I could not help but ask myself why my neighbors appeared so consumed and preoccupied with the races. It must be something that I did not know, I told myself. There must be something in horseracing to attract their attention, I insisted.

At that time, horseracing was

just months away from being aired by a television network. For some unexplained reason, it aroused my interest; a horseracing bug bit me. When the races at the San Lazaro Hippodrome in Sta. Cruz, Manila and Santa Ana Race Track in Makati were finally shown on TV, my interest went to a higher level, as I savored the childish wonder in every race.

That was in 1965. At that time, horseracing was dominated by topnotch horses like Muscles, Confetti, Roman Tune, Royal Tempest, among others. While most racehorses that graced the two racetracks did not belong to the much-ballyhooed thoroughbred quality, they nevertheless

competed intensely among themselves. Months later the likes of Mr. Image, Way Ahead, Sir Change, and Riches followed to leave their marks on the two racetracks. By that time, I watched intently those races over the black-and-white television sets in our neighborhood. I got hooked.

Sooner than expected, my initial interest had transformed into a passion for horseracing. I had learned to appreciate the competition among the many connections that had graced the local racetracks. The wild dash to grab the lead for the competing horses, the patience for the other horses to wait and see before they take any move, and the mad scramble to the finish line had made

every race an exciting and unbelievable experience for

a child like me. Unlike

Fair and Square in the winner’s circle at Santa Ana Park.

MARHO_CUP_2014.indd 51 11/18/2014 2:11:43 AM

cockfighting, where cocks fight to die, racehorses do not run to die. It was a pleasant surprise to know the racehorses that ran the past week would run again by next week. This is a difference that I fully appreciate. For this reason, I have avoided the cockpit for the rest of my life. I have yet to go to a cockpit and place a bet there.

Horseracing is a sport. As a sport, competition is intense and passionate. Every connection, composed of the owner, the trainer and assistant trainer, the jockey, and the groom, aspires to become the best in the local horseracing scene. Every connection strives hard to prepare their horses for the competition and win the races. Aside from the windfall income they could earn, those connections want to earn the bragging rights in the community of gentlemen.

During those days, I watched with awe the many ways topnotch jockeys rode their horses - sprinters (or those which take the lead), pressers (or those that press the sprinters), stayers (or those that stay in the middle), or routers (or come from behind horses). I had learned that certain jockeys excelled in riding sprinters, or the de bocas. Other jockeys had outstanding skills in handling routers, or the de remates. But few jockeys developed the overall skills to ride the four kinds of racehorses. As a rule, it is not easy for a jockey to adapt to the temper of every racehorse. Racehorses are no different from human beings; they behave according to their temperament. They have their mood swings.

The late jockey Elias Ordiales was probably the best when riding those sprinters. At his prime, Elias, or Eleng to fans and friends, was the master of the pace; it was extremely difficult to beat his pace while atop a good sprinter. His imposing presence loomed large in the racetracks. He posted many victories, while other jockeys ate his dust.

But Elias was not the only son of God in horseracing. The late jockey Jose “Pepe” Saulog gave Elias and other great jockeys of their time a run for their money, making him one of the better jockeys when riding pressers. For a time, the competition was between them.

But other jockeys were not that far behind in skills and ability. They too gave them the competition, making horseracing a very exciting activity.

The late Francisco Fernando, or jockey “Hataw” to his irreverent racing fans, developed the skills in navigating those stayers and routers. By the sheer power of his whip, Fernando forced vicious horses to run according to his dictate and compete in a race. He was the strict disciplinarian of horses. To the surprise and delight of racing aficionados, they won, but not without the usual severe beatings from the revered master of the whip.

Other topnotch jockeys were also worthy of notice. The 1960s saw the likes of the Guce brothers (Eulogio, Pablito, and Guce Jr., whose sons and grandsons followed their footsteps), EmeterioDaquis (father of Manolito), Arturo Sordan, dubbed as “pingas” after one of his ears was struck by a horse’s foot in a racing accident, “Isting” Cartasano, Celerino Falcon, JuanitoMacaraig (father of JR Macaraig), JoselitoZabat, and lesser guys like Wilfredo Castillo, Fernandez, and PepeTorno (who later became a trainer), Geni, Ben, Ronnie, Botardo, and younger guys like Bebet Bernardo, and Pete Paraino, to mention a few.

My fascination with horseracing stemmed from the sight of those racehorses. As a lad, I was awed by their intricate breeding, imposing size, well-chiseled shape, and unmatched speed whenever they go out of the starting gate. By sheer size and shape but not exactly speed, the better horses of the 1960s could rival the thoroughbred

horses that arrived on the local racing scene ten or 20 years later.

When I entered high school in 1967 at the University of Santo Tomas, which was a kilometer away from San Lazaro, one of the very first things I did was to watch the “trangko,” or morning workouts of horses that had stables there. Since my classes started at 12 pm, I went to the track at around 7 am and watched the galloping horses until 10 am. I could not help but admire their speed, shape, and built.

I saw the likes of High Pocket, Top Soldier, Column Five, WalaHala, Ringleader, Pearl Ring, and of course, the diminutive Iranza, which won several long distance races. At that time, the 2,000 meter race was introduced and experimented. Iranza won over the bigger horses, or the so-called “mola” type.

My passion for horseracing gracefully continued during my high school days. When I was a Boy Scout in my first and second years, I and my high school buddies proceeded to San Lazaro immediately after our Saturday training ended at 5 pm to watch the last two races and placed our modest bets on horses of our choice. It did not matter much whether we won or lost. But mattered most was we had fun.

The same routine continued in our third and fourth years, when we took our Preparatory Military Training, or PMT. During those days, the San Lazaro was not fully lighted, but we were good for the last two races. W saw races that were barely visible because of the darkness that enveloped the racetrack. That was true during the months of December, January, and February.

But when the Manila Jockey Club management decided to hold night races every Wednesday, a different story ensued. I was a college student at the University of the East in mid-1970s, when I went to those night races at San Lazaro. Although my stomach was grumbling of hunger, I and my college chums went there after our classes. It was fun. I remember taking the cheap food at the various carinderias in and out of the racetrack.

At that time, my fascination with horseracing transformed into a strong belief that going to the racetrack was a form of social life,

Red Brolga with jockey Lito (Zabat) wins against Makati Star, jockey Pete aboard, via photo finish.

 MARHO Cup 2 0 1 4

a diversion from the rigors and inanities of our daily existence. We need a break. Horseracing offers that break from the daily grind. It is essentially a form of sports entertainment, no different from other sports like sports, boxing, and the like.

My appreciation for horseracing goes deeper, when, years later, I learned to appreciate that horseracing is not - and never - for heavy betting. Horseracing is not designed for heavy gambling. It does not pay to place heavy bets to the point of losing one’s shirt.

Since all bets are placed in a parimutuel pool, it does not reward racing fans, who place heavy bets on certain chosen combinations. It skews the dividends. While horseracing has a betting side, betting is for gaming, not gambling.

There is a wide world of difference between gambling and gaming. People who engage in gaming do the betting for fun, to release all the tension and pent-up emotions, and eventually relax. Hence, horseracing is a form of relaxation. Only fools who do not know how to handle their money lose their shirt in horseracing.

As years went on, my fascination for horseracing has been reinforced by testimonies of racing aficionados and friends on how they have

acquired certain material things from their winnings in horseracing. “Have you seen that secondhand car? I bought it after I won a quarter of a million pesos in the winner take all,” a friend once told me.

In contrast, I have yet to hear of success stories from the casinos or cockpits. I used to crack the joke that it was not uncommon for a casino aficionado to tell a friend these lines: “Have you seen that beautiful house out there? I used to own it but sold it out after I lost in the casinos.”

My fascination with horseracing flourished when I finished college and went to work as a journalist. I remember going to the racetrack after finishing my work. I remember entertaining myself there during weekends. At that time, many thoroughbreds had invaded the local racing scene. Imported stallions and mares arrived and they multiplied to give the two racetracks the critical mass of thoroughbred horses. The planned improvement of their bloodlines had happened expected.

I remember how Fair and Square, the ugly duckling that buyers rejected in an auction, rose to the occasion to become the undisputed champion in the early 1980s. I did not expect it would dominate the racing scene. That super horse

was so overpowering that no other racehorse could match its speed and skills.

By that time, younger jockeys arrived to take the place of Elias and company. Jesus Guce, Eduardo Domingo Jr., ElpidioAguila, Andres Camba, GuarinoInfantado, Rizalino Agustin, Ernesto Ventura, and others took over and dominated horseracing.

Later, other super horses followed as the government came out with the official policy to encourage horseracing as the game for the hoi polloi, or the masses. Regular stakes races were scheduled, while the improvement of the thoroughbred bloodlines of many horses had become a consuming passion among horse breeders, giving the two racing clubs the racehorses they need for the races.

Hence, horseracing became more competitive during the late 1970s and 1980s. This is the same spirit of competition that has persisted over the next decades as more racehorses have come to the scene, while the government has continue to support horseracing, which has become an industry that provides employment for thousands of people and raises taxes for the government.

In brief, my fascination with horseracing is not a fleeting moment in my youth. It has evolved to become part of my personal conviction that we need horseracing to provide cheap entertainment for millions of people and diversion from the drudgery and boredom of their daily existence.

In short, horseracing has to stay. It is not perfect, but it continues to evolve to make it truly the delight of the masses. F
