Fellow Toastmasters and friends, Greetings and Congratulations to the Organising Committee for a successful and exciting Installation! For me, Tawau Toastmasters Club has always presented yourselves as a dynamic club, with strong leaders - Congratulations! I believe that with the commitment and vibrant energy of your President, Datin Betty Hiew, Tawau Toastmasters Club will continue to fly your flag very high

indeed. The founder of Toastmasters, Dr. Ralph Smedley, said, “Toastmasters are educators, whether they realize it or not, and Toastmasters is more than a club – it’s an EDUCATION.” I believe that these words ring true in Toastmasters clubs here in District 87’s Division K, even though we may be geographically distant from where it all started. The systems in place to help each Toastmaster move from a place where they may not be communicating at a level they wish to be, to a higher place where they learn from and accept helpful peer evaluations and apply steps to improve themselves – epitomize for me how amazing human potential can be! Many used to believe that qualification is everything. We are taught and told that as long as we get a good grade we will have no problem getting a job that pays well. However, to a certain extend, qualification is just not enough. Experience tells us that we need more than mere paper qualifications. What perfected one’s qualification is communication skill. It is communication that gets things done and foster better relationship among people. It is communication that convinces, influences and leads the people, be it in a small group or a big crowd. It is no surprise that so many people, even professionals in various fields are paying attention to communication skills. They even pay a big sum of money to improve their communication skills. The importance of communication skills has been recognised more than a century ago. It was in 1924 that Toastmasters International was founded and to date more than 4 million people around the world have become more confident speakers and leaders because of their participation in Toastmasters. Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. Today, its membership is 260,000 strong. These members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 12,500-plus clubs that make up our global network of meeting locations. Toastmasters International is the only organisation that offers its members ways and means to improve their communication skills, besides improving one’s public speaking skills, self confidence and listening skills. The best thing about Toastmasters is, it does not cost a fortune for anyone to learn and improve all these skills. In Tawau, the Tawau Toastmasters Club was chartered in 1st June 1996 with its Charter President Patricia Chai. The club celebrates its 15th Anniversary on 1st June 2011. The club has gone a long way to be what it is today. It has not only trained but transformed many members who have participated in its programs. Along the years the club has witness how a shy and timid person could turn into a dynamic speaker and even bold enough to lead the club confidently, not to mention improving his/her personality, career and social communications. One thing about Toastmasters club which makes it different from other clubs or organisations is that it gives opportunity to every member to serve as club officer whenever they are ready. Leading a club could be a big challenge for most but in a Toastmasters club, there is a manual for every post in the club, describing exactly



what and how to do. On top of that there is still the whole club to support whoever leading the club. Tawau Toastmasters Club has also created many milestones all these years. Its members who have gained courage and confidence through the club have taken part in many speech contests in either Club, Area, Division or even District level. Many past presidents of the club has also took up more challenging responsibilities such as Area Governors and councils members at the Division level. These responsibilities take them beyond the club to serve members of other Toastmasters clubs in other areas. The club also produced its first Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) in the name of Lee Chye Ewe in 2007. DTM is the highest recognition in Toastmasters for members who have achieved both educational and leadership excellence. Lee is also the first person from Tawau to receive the DTM award. In order to reach out to the people better especially among the Mandarin speaking group, Tawau Toastmasters Club has also chartered the Tawau Mandarin Toastmasters Club on 1st May 1999. Tawau Toastmasters Club is the first Toastmasters club to have its own official website currently hosted at http://tmtawau.blogspot.com. The website was started on 5th May 1999 by Lee Chye Ewe. It captures the various club activities, achievements and news and is a main record and reference. The website has also won the District 51 Golden Webpage Award in 2009 and The Best Toastmasters Club Website in 2010. Lee still maintains the website today. In October 2010 Tawau Toastmasters Club also organised the Division K 15th Semi-Annual Convention. It was the first ever grand Toastmasters function organised by the club and had received thumb-ups from all its delegates and guests alike. These are all made possible because of the professional programs that have been designed by Toastmasters International which was founded by Ralph C Smedley.
