I feel fortunate to have found such a great student body and staff to work with in this grant program.” Diane recently shared her philosophy of counseling. “All of us encounter bumps in the road throughout our life, but for children who are still growing physically and emotionally, dealing with issues like anxiety, feeling depressed or dealing with a recent loss of a family member, the emotions they experience can easily interrupt their academic learning and their emotional growth. The simple act of working with a child at their developmental level and helping him or her work through their feelings, can help them get back on track and fully develop in all areas of their life.” The program is meant to make it easier for children to access therapy services by providing counseling right at the school. There is no charge for this service as all fees are covered by the grant. If you would like to speak to Diane about your child becoming part of the program, please contact the Guidance Office.

Margaretville Hospital Provides Grant-Funded Counseling Program

Diane Jordan, RN, LCSW, MFT is a new addition to Downsville Central Schools this 2018-19 school year. Through a grant-funded program at Margaretville Hospital, she provides counseling services to Downsville students during the school day.

Diane recently moved to New York from Michigan where she managed a private practice in psychotherapy for many years. She worked with children, adults, family units and couples. Diane also taught as an adjunct professor at a Michigan University.

She is new to the Downsville area and had this to say about her experience at the school. “Meeting the children and staff at Downsville School has been a wonderful experience for me. I truly feel the community spirit here and find that the staff are motivated

to provide the best educational experience possible. I feel fortunate to have found such a great student body and staff to work with in this grant program.”

Diane recently shared her philosophy of counseling. “All of us encounter bumps in the road throughout our life, but for children who are still growing physically and emotionally, dealing with issues like anxiety, feeling depressed or dealing with a recent loss of a family member, the emotions they experience can easily interrupt their academic learning and their emotional growth. The simple act of working with a child at their developmental level and helping him or her work through their feelings, can help them get back on track and fully develop in all areas of their life.”

The program is meant to make it easier for children to access therapy services by providing counseling right at the school. There is no charge for this service as all fees are covered by the grant. If you would like to speak to Diane about your child becoming part of the program, please contact the Guidance Office.

6th Grade Student PlacesFirst in Poetry Contest

Sixth grade science student, Elijah Odell, had his poem selected by New York Outdoor News for their 2018 Youth Writing Contest, sponsored by Cabela’s. Elijah competed with students from all over New York State and won the poetry division for the 6th-8th grade category! He received a check for $50 and an engraved award plaque. His poem and his photo was published in the January

issue of New York Outdoor News and they will enter his poem in the Outdoors Writers Association of America’s (OWAA) annual writing contest, where participants have a chance to win additional cash prizes.

Mrs. Fifield’s 6th grade science students have been selected nine times as winners for this contest! This just goes to show that our small school is comprised of enormous talent. Congratulations Elijah!

ELIJAH’S POEMWe go to my uncle Pete’s

it’s a real treat! We get our gun and gear, and go hunt some deer.

My dad and I went in a stand,I have the gun in my hand.

We are covered in camo and have some ammo.

We see a doe, I raise the gun slow.

Aim! Shoot!I had a good shot,

because of that red dot.We track the dying dear, but we don’t see or hear.

It’s gone!My dad taps my shoulder,

I take a bullet out of my ammo holder.Load the gun!

I shoot it again,we begin to track.I found the deer,

Dad it’s here!It’s a buck!

Go get the truck! Can’t wait ‘til next season,

because of this reason!

World Oral Health DayMrs. Betsy Baxter,

World Oral health Day is celebrated every year on March 20. It is an international day to celebrate the benefits of a healthy

mouth and to promote worldwide awareness of the issues around oral health and the importance of oral hygiene to

looking after everyone old and young

This is why we teach Music...not because we expect you to major in music,

not because we expect you to play or sing all your life, not so you can relax, not so you can have fun,

but so you will be human,so you will recognize beauty,

so you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world,so you will have more love, more compassion,

more gentleness, more goodin short, more life.

—Author unknown

The Downsville Times 96th Grade Robotics Meets with London

On Monday, January 28, 2019, Mrs. Frisbee’s Robotics Class met with a school from London via Distance Learning Technology. The students from 6th grade that were taking Robotics with Mrs. Frisbee during the 2nd marking period, worked to build and program the basic EV3 robot. Then on January 28, these students met in the Distance Learning Classroom here at DCS and watched a 6th grade class from London share their EV3 Robot builds. Once the other class had finished sharing, we had a chance to ask them about their robots. We then shared our programs. The students in London were very impressed with our programming and asked us to share some of our knowledge in programming, as they have only built robots so far.

The 6th grade stu-dents from DCS that had this opportunity want to meet with these London students again, therefore, they have all agreed to continue to work on their robots during their study hall once per week, and we plan to have addi-tional meetings with the London school once per month for the remainder of the school year.

Make Lemonade!During the coldest days of January, the students in Pre-K

enjoyed a refreshing glass of lemonade. Students read the ingredients together with their teachers and took turns adding, stirring and even pouring their own cups of the “sweet” beverage. The taste took us back to the warmth of the sunshine and the refreshing taste of the cool lemonade, promising us that spring and summer were well on their way.

The Downsville Times 11What Helps You Study?

5th Grade Home and Career Skills students answered this question using their STEM skills. Students began the project by analyzing their study habits and current study space. They identified what things in their current space helped them stay focused and get their homework done (desk, chair, and light-ing) and what things were a distraction (televisions and game systems).

Once the distractions were identified, students designed a study space for their existing bedroom that contained all the things necessary to develop good study habits. Along the way students measured bedrooms, drew out dimensions on graph paper, and then “shopped” furnishings.

Final projects consisted of drawings of their ideal study space as well as a written explanation of how their design would help them study.

Work Study pic. #1: I love my study because I can see my bed while I work. I have a lot of room in my space to dance around. I have the lamp next to the window so I can get a moth in my room. The angry sea horse is funny.

Work Study pic. #2: My study space is important because I have pencils, binder and chair. I have pencils because I need to write. I like having windows as they give me light.

Work Study pic. #3: I chose this because I like the color blue. I chose the desk because it has draws. I chose the chair because

I like to rock. I like the drawers because I can put stuff in them. The color blue is calming and I can concentrate.

Work Study pic. #4: This room helps me study because I need a wheelie chair, a computer so I can research things, a shelf to put my stuff on, and my bed to read on.

Work Study pic. #5: My study space is supposed to look like an old fashion log cabin. It has a display case and some chairs. My study space has a nice wooden desk and a peaceful array. It features central light. It is comfortable to work on school projects and other projects.

Work Study pic. #6: I chose checkered walls because red and black are two of my favorite colors. I chose blue for the room because blue is my favorite color too. I chose these study space because it will help me study.

Work Study pic. #7: I chose green and blue because they are my favorite colors. My desk has four draws, a pencil case, a reading lamp, and a chair with wheels. My bed is very big and very comfortable. My bed sheets are green and blue and that is my study room. I chose a gaming desk because in my free time, I play Fifa 19.

Work Study pic. #8: My private workspace has a wheelie chair and my walls are green. My desk is camo, and it helps me concentrate. My desk has cubies, and helps me to be organized. My general theme is functionality.
