PASTOR’S PASSAGE – Garland Hart Dear Friends, One person who I have come to admire throughout my life was S. Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A. He was born here in Eatonton and lived on Grove Street which is the street on which I live. When he was three years old his family moved to Atlanta. As a second grader, he discovered that he could buy a six pack of cokes for a quarter, sell them for a nickel apiece, and make a 20% profit. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, he and his brother, Ben, scraped together some money, located a site, built a restaurant, and opened it as Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, Georgia in 1946. Truett faced several major setbacks. Three years after opening the restaurant Truett’s two brothers were in a small private plane that crashed on the way to Chattanooga. Both of them died. Losing a business partner is tough. Losing both brothers is horrible. Two years later he opened a second restaurant. Then the second restaurant caught on fire and was totally destroyed. He had no insurance. Within a few weeks Truett discovered he had a polyp in his colon that would have to be removed. Instead of rebuilding his restaurant he went into surgery. The operation turned into two. He was out of action for several months. What does an active entrepreneur do when he’s stuck in bed for months at a time? The time Truett spend out of commission inspired him to play with a new concept. He had always loved chicken. It had been an important part of the Dwarf Grill (renamed Dwarf House). What would happen, he wondered, “if I took that chicken breast, seasoned and fried it just right, and put it on a bun with the right condiments?” The answer became the Chick-fil-A sandwich and the start of the largest privately owned restaurant chain in the world. Today Truett Cathy is credited with inventing the chicken sandwich in the fast food industry. Today Chick-fil-A operates more than 2000 restaurants mainly in the United States. In 2000, it became a billion-dollar company. In 2015, it became a 6-billion-dollar company. It is one of the most successful operations in the restaurant business. Yet it never would have come to pass if Truett Cathy had not experienced the setback that he did.

PASTOR’S PASSAGE continued In 1982, Chick-fil-A’s executive Committee established the chain’s corporate purpose: “To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.” Truett Cathy’s faith based principles in running his business have been instrumental in its growth and success. He was a devoted Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years. Throughout his years with Chick-fil-A the restaurant has always been closed on Sundays. He wanted to give his employees the opportunity to attend services in their churches on Sunday. God blessed Truett Cathy with a most successful business. He died on September 8, 2014 at the age of 93. When failure and setbacks come, we should turn our focus on the Lord and seek His guidance. God desires our obedience over anything else. God does not want us to give up when we fail. The Lord will stay with us until we accomplish the mission to which He calls us. The Lord will never forsake or leave us. We can trust the Lord. In His Grace, Garland

CONTRIBUTED – Leon Smith

“A Smile…”

“A smile costs nothing…but gives much. It enriches those who receive it, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or might that he can get along without it. And none is so poor but that he can be made rich by it. A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business…and is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and is Nature’s best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen. For it is something of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them on of yours…as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.” -Author unknow
