March HR Update 2019 Modified Summer Work Schedule President Alger and senior leaders are pleased to implement a modified summer work schedule for James Madison University for the seventh year. The university will adopt a modified summer work schedule beginning Monday, May 6 and ending Friday, August 16, 2019. University hours of business operation will be 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Monday Thursday. University hours of business operation will be 8:00 a.m. noon Friday. Departments and supervisors who have employees working an adjusted schedule after noon on Fridays will determine customer service expectations. Full-time employees must account for a 40-hour workweek or use leave to make up the difference. Not doing so could jeopardize JMU’s ability to provide modified summer scheduling. Employees may work past noon on Fridays to fulfill their 40-hour workweek. Alternate or flexible work schedules that meet the 40-hour workweek are acceptable with supervisor approval. All leave requests are subject to supervisor approval. Full-time employee work schedules should be adjusted during the Memorial Day and Independence Day holiday weeks. The workweek (taking 8-hour designated holidays into account) must equal at least 40 hours. See Holiday Schedule and University Closings. Please direct your modified summer work schedule questions to Reagan Neese, Leave Specialist, [email protected], 540-568-3974. Also see Modified Summer Work Schedule FAQs. JMU strives for flexibility in scheduling, work-life balance and employee satisfaction. The following Aflac policies are available to you through payroll deduction:

All plans (with the exception of the individual short-term disability insurance) are a pre-taxed deduction.

The President's Purple Star Awards JMU asks you to provide nominations for the President’s Purple Star Awards. Nominations will be accepted in the areas of customer service, innovation, teamwork, community service, and career achievement. The President’s Purple Star Awards will mirror the state public service awards. Each year the Governor’s Office solicits nominations for state agency public service awards to outstanding state employees in corresponding categories. Please note: There have been years in the past in which the Governor’s Office has not taken nominations. Submission of JMU nominations is dependent upon whether or not the Governor’s Office sends out a request for nominations. Employees who receive a President’s Purple Star Award will automatically be nominated for a Governor’s Award for Public Service in the corresponding category. These awards are an opportunity to demonstrate the outstanding contributions that our JMU employees add to the state workforce. We are now accepting nominations for the following awards:

• Agency “Star”

• Career Achievement Award

• Community Service and Volunteerism Award

• Customer Service Award

• Innovation Award

• Teamwork Award

• Workplace Health, Wellness and Safety Award

Submit nominations through the President’s Purple Star Award website. Please direct any questions regarding the nomination process to Tara Roe in Human Resources.
