With as many as 17 teams in some divisions this is a true testament to the Heat’s dedication to skill development. All of the Heat teams have seen great growth over the course of the season and it is great to see the teams get rewarded for their hard work. The Heat Squirt B team was one of the best teams throughout the regular season, boasting a balanced attack in all areas of the game. They started strong in the season and have only improved their individual and team

skills throughout the season. The squirts ended the season with 15 wins and only 2 loss-es. The captain, Bobby Dou-kov, took the overall leading points title for the entire

The Heat are very pleased to announce that Director of Player Development Alec Dunn, with board approval have hired Gene Galyuk as the club’s new goalie coach. Gene has been train-ing goalies on and off the ice for over 10 years and focuses on the “Pro Hybrid” Technique which is now the most commonly practiced among PRO goalies around the world. As a com-bination of the Traditional “Stand-Up” and North American “Butterfly” styles, “Pro Hybrid” training combines the best of both worlds by focusing on the “Stand-Up” skating techniques, high output lateral movement, upright recovery, and rock solid balance. Gene will be joining the Heat this spring and will be working with all the goalies during the clinics, tournament teams as well as private lessons. Please welcome Gene to the HEAT!!

The Heat Bantam B head into playoffs with their heads held high and ready to make their mark as they do battle against their opposition. With a 12 man roster, the Heat found themselves leaving their sweat and energy on the ice and knowing that each game improved both as a team and individually. With outstanding goaltending keeping them in each game, the players plan to use what they have learned throughout the season and make the weekend of March 8th and 9th a memorable one.

The Heat Midget 16U team finished the regular season in 3rd place with a 10-6-0 record. With outstanding goaltending throughout the season the midget goalies ranked 1st and 4th overall in the division with a combined .909 save percentage. The defensive game was impressive with a relatively new group of defensemen. They grew tremendously from the beginning of the season. Not to be out done, we have 3 forwards in the top 10 scoring for the division with Justin Cait taking 1st in the division. Our bid for the

SCAHA championship begins in Simi Valley in a playoff bracket that has us teamed against the 2nd placed OC Hockey and the 6th placed Jr. Ducks. This will be a challenging bracket for us as we posted regular season losses to both teams. The first round of playoffs begin March 8-9th. GO HEAT!!!

GENE GALYUK JOINS THE HEAT AS CLUB GOALIE COACH

As the season draws to a close, Director of Player Development and Club Head Coach Alec Dunn is extremely pleased with the progress all of the teams have made this season. “With 5 of our 7 possible teams advancing to the SCAHA playoffs it really shows the commitment of the organization to putting teams in the right areas to allow for success. All of the Heat coaches have bought into the mentality of developing the players’ skills on and off the ice. Equally, the Heat families have been committed to long hours at the rink for practice, video sessions and off-ice training. We would be nothing without the commitments of our players and parents to the Heat’s mission and their commitment to bringing their sons and daughters to the rink at least 3 or 4 times a week.”

PEE WEE A PLAY AA IN COLORADO SPRINGSThe California Heat PeeWee A team used the Presidents’ Day tournament in Colo-rado Springs as a tune up for the upcoming SCAHA playoffs. Competing in the Pee Wee AA bracket, the Heat finished out of contention for the finals but competed against every team they faced. Every player stepped up and played a high level of hockey, from Riley West being awarded and finishing a penalty shot to Shane “bulldog” Sundahl and Louis Burg stepping up and playing tough hockey in front of the opponent’s net and getting rewarded for it with a couple goals. The team was able to see Team USA’s Training Center and had a lot of fun playing floorball with one another in the hotel rooms. The team is hoping to use the bonding experience in Colorado to help drive the team in the SCAHA playoffs.

SQUIRT B HEAD SOUTH FOR PRESIDENTS DAYThis Presidents Day tournament the Squirt B’s traveled down to San Diego to com-pete in the BB division at the Kroc Center, hosted by the California Cougars. For playing up a division, the Heat put together a full team effort and gave the oppos-ing BB teams a run for their money. Although they ended the tournament with a 0-3-1 record, the Heat proved to themselves they could be competitive in the BB division. It was a great opportunity for the boys to get competition from a higher level of play and are now focusing on the strong points of the tournament and are preparing to carry those efforts into the anticipated SCAHA playoffs.

President’s Day Tournament ResultsMITE ADM CHALLENGE TEAMS IN VALENCIA

Over the President’s Day weekend, the Heat mite team traveled to Valencia. In a very “spir-ited” and “eventful” first game against the home team of Valencia, we managed to win quite handily with the help of some stellar goal scoring by Kenny McIlwain. The second game fea-tured our familiar opponents, the Cal Golden Bears. Lino Viau and Zach Pelikh provided the offensive power against a very good Golden Bear goalie, helping the team come out on top once again. In the third and most hard fought game against the Las Vegas Wranglers and arguably the best player we have faced this season, the stalwart defense of Simon Boyadzhyan and Brent Brewster combined with the offensive prowess of Jack Shtoll and Luca Mestrandrea created a close game that was contested to the finish. It was a great weekend showcasing the competitiveness and improvements the team has displayed throughout the season.

PEE WEE B TAKE HOME SKILLS COMPETITION IN SAN DIEGOThe California Heat PeeWee B’s participated in the California Winter Games in San Diego for President’s Day. The team battled hard all weekend long. The Heat players represented their team and club proudly as they took 1st place in the skills competition. They did this by winning the breakaway and speed skating portion of the competition and finished in 2nd for the shooting accuracy and goaltending events. They rode that momentum into their final 2 games coming out with big wins in both contests. Ethan Walsh led the team with 2 big goals in the 6-1 win in their final game for the bronze. The team headed home very proud of their accomplishment and had a great time together.

BANTAM AA TRAVEL TO DALLAS FOR PRESIDENTS DAYHeat Bantam AA team travel to Dallas Texas to compete in the One Hockey Presidents Day Tournament. The team came out strong and finished the round robin portion of the tour-nament with an impressive record of 4 wins and 1 tie. Entering the semi finals as the 2nd ranked team they faced the Everett Silvertips. Everett came out strong and took a 4 to 1 lead over the Heat in the 1st period. The Heat showed a lot of character not giving up and turned the pressure up in the 2nd and 3rd periods. They scored the next 5 goals and finished the game with a 7 to 5 victory over the Silvertips. Although they eventually fell in the champi-onship game to the Dallas Oilers, the Heat were very proud of the effort displayed. Nick Rashkovsky and Jojo Velasquez shared the honor of tournament MVP’s for the Heat.

BANTAM A TAKE HOME SILVER IN CHICAGO, ILLINOISThe California Heat Bantam A team enjoyed a great Presidents Day weekend this year as they traveled to Chicago, IL for the Presidents Cup Tournament. The team took part in some outdoor pond hockey on the first night of their stay. The temperatures were in the teens but that didn’t dampen their enthusiasm while they enjoyed a spirited game of shinny. Once the hockey began in earnest they won 2, including 2 shutouts on Satur-day, and tied 2. They took 1st place in their division but unfortunately fell in the finals- 2 to 1 in overtime. Though not the outcome they wanted or expected, the weekend was enjoyed by all. Players that are used to green landscapes and temperatures in the 70’s were thrilled to spend a weekend in the snowy, chilly climates of Western Illinois. Authentic deep dish pizza helped warm them between Pre Game “warm ups” and snow ball fights outside the rinks.

BANTAM B TRAVEL SOUTH TO PLAY IN SAN DIEGOThe CA Heat Bantam B’s had a great experience Presidents Day weekend playing in Escondido, California in the California State Games. With the Olympics going on at the same time, players got a little taste of what it would be like to be an Olympian. Although our record didn’t show, we played some of our best hockey under a lot of adversity playing with a short bench of only 9 skaters. Our goaltenders stood out and played exceptionally well during the entire tournament. Jake Stirzel and Alex Chon stopped puck after puck to keep us in every game. What a great experience it was for the boys.

MIDGET 16 TAKE HOME 2nd IN CHICAGO, ILLINOISThe Midget A team traveled to Chicago for Presidents Day. It was a unique experience as players got to play in the snow and skate on a pond for the f irst t ime. This unique experience propelled them to play some of their best hockey of the year going undefeated (4-0) against some really tough east coast teams in round robin play. They advanced to the championship game against another southern California team, OC. The game went back and forth and the Heat lost 7-5 in a real exciting championship game. They brought home the silver, but more importantly they brought back memories that will last them a lifetime.

The California Heat 2014 Spring program will start March 30th and will run thru Memorial Day Weekend. The pro-gram will provide players an opportunity to develop their skills during the off-season via on and off-ice practice sessions and scrimmages leading up to participation in a local Memorial Day Tournament.

The clinics will be up tempo station training where we will work on individual skills and concepts. This will be a great opportunity to stay in shape, work on individual skills, and stay sharp during the spring. We will also have stations for our goaltenders to make sure they are receiving proper development. There will be coach-es on the ice offering guidance for the players development.

The 3 on 3 program will be a great chance for the kids to have fun and work on their skills in a competitive manner. The coaches will be there to keep track of scores and give guidance to the players as plays arise. The players and the goalies will have the oppor tu-nity to see lots of pucks. There will be a lot of emphasis in 3 on 3 on small area games emphasizing puck handling skills, accurate passing, proper positioning, and battles along the boards.

The Memorial Day team will have at least 8 hours of practice on Sundays (may-be a few Saturdays as well, if necessary), which will focus on individual skills as well as team concepts. We will have practice slots that will be 1 hour, 1.5 hours and 2 hours. The program will conclude with a local Memorial Day tournament where all the players will have the ability to play competition from other areas. This will be a great way for us to see what level of competition we will try to compete at next season and to see what players will fit in on our teams.

HEAT PLAYERS OF THE MONTHDECLAN STEWART

Many players have stepped up their game during this month, but one player that battled game in and game out is Declan Stewart. This

month Declan played on both offense and defense and has been effective on both sides of the puck. Declan’s work ethic, team play,

and hunger for the puck has earned him the February Player of the Month.

SQUIRT B

LUKE MEADOver the past month Captain Luke Mead

stood out among the rest with his offensive and defensive play leading his team to a 5

game win streak to end the season, including a bronze medal win. His strong leadership

and spectacular efforts over the month included a skills competition victory in

break-aways along with an amazing 5 on 3 short-handed goal to finish off the final game

earning him the Player of the Month.

PEE WEE B

JAKE ROSENFELD Choosing one player from a team that has excelled all year is difficult. However, the player of the month for February is Jake

Rosenfeld. A great two way player, Jake has worked extremely hard on and off the ice and

has gained the confidence of the coaching staff to be able to play in any critical game sit-uation. He is proof that hard work, dedication and commitment can propel one to the top.

Congratulations Jake.

BANTAM A

ETHAN GILLThe month of February saw many players

elevate their game to new levels. However, one player that stands out this month has been Ethan Gill. Being the smallest player on the team never stopped Ethan from competing. Going up against players double in size has never fazed Ethan as he continues to show

that hard work, commitment and dedication can overcome all obstacles. Congratulations

Ethan.

MIDGET 16 A

MILES HENRY This season our players have all shown

tremendous improvement, in February Miles Henry was our player of the month. He has

shown his coaches how much he was willing to learn with great listening habits and focus.

It is translating in his play which is not only al-ways aggressive but also effective at both ends

of the ice. He also showed a willingness to pass and share the puck with his teammates.

MITE ADM

MILES SALZGEBER Miles had a great month of February helping

the PWA team clinch the 2nd spot in the SCAHA Playoffs. He scored 3 goals in the last two regular season games and added

two assists, both in winning effort. Miles was strong in the face off circle and extremely

accountable in his teams defensive zone. He has earned the February Player of the Month.

PEE WEE A

NICK RASHKOVSKY Nick went on an offensive tear in the month of February. Scoring 25 points in the last 7

games with 13 goals and 12 assists. Nick was a huge reason why the team was able to reach

the championship game at the President’s Day tournament, with his strong play on both

sides of the puck, as well as in the face off circle. For his leadership and drive Nick has

earned the Bantam AA February Player of the Month.

BANTAM AA

GABRIEL CALDITO Although the team is filled with players who give their all day in and day out, one player brings it to the table and sacrifices his body, time, and heart for this team. That player is

Gabriel Caldito. The amount of grit and pas-sion he shows on and off the ice is infectious toward the rest of the team. He has earned

February Player of the Month.

BANTAM B
