Congressman Case shared some of his conservation priorities, and his interest in curbing the amount of commercial tour helicopter activity that has been disrupting neighbors lives. The Congressman also shared that he believes it is time to open a dialogue about the visitor carrying capacity of our State. Further, Congressman Case has joined Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard in asking the EPA for assistance in assessing the effects of oxybenzone from sunscreen on corals and other marine life in the Bay. EPA has reached out to NOAA and they have agreed to co-host a first ever coral-sunscreen “State of the Science” meeting this year. On 24 February 2019, the Ocean Safety and Life Guard Services Division established a new dedicated Hanauma Bay Lifeguard District. This initiative will allow Lifeguards to be on duty at the Bay from its opening at 6 a.m. till closing. It was great seeing so many of you at the dinner, and welcoming new faces. JOKE OF THE MONTH Did You Hear About the Salmon That Went Into a Vegetarian Restaurant? “Sorry,” the Maitre d’ said, “We Don’t Serve Fish …”

ONGOING CONFUSION There has been long standing confusion regarding the Friends of Hanauma Bay, The Hanauma Bay Education Program and Hanauma Bay management.

The Friends of Hanauma Bay is a private, non-profit organization that advocates with City and State officials and Hawaii’s US Congressional Delegation, for the protection, preservation and restoration of Hanauma Bay. This advocacy includes recommending and supporting best practices in the operation and management of the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. The City’s Department of Parks and Recreation has overall management responsibility for the Nature Preserve. The City contracts with the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College, which staffs the Hanauma Bay Education Program (HBEP). The City pays for HBEP from the Hanauma Bay Fund, which is funded by revenue generated at the Bay from visitor admission and parking fees, and concessionaire rents. Volunteers at the Bay are recruited, trained and supervised by the Hanauma Bay Education Program. The Friends do not provide volunteers though many Friends members are volunteers.

And that’s where some of the confusion comes in. An HBEP volunteer may or may not be a member of the Friends of Hanauma Bay. A Friends of Hanauma Bay member may or may not be an HBEP volunteer. Or, someone can be both an HBEP volunteer and a Friends of Hanauma Bay member.

Adding to the confusion, at one time the Friends granted HBEP volunteers a complimentary membership with the Friends. That has not been the case for many years.

Partly in response to this confusion, we have simplified our dues structure. Membership will now be $25.00 for an individual and $35.00 for a couple or family. We continue to offer HBEP volunteers and students a special membership rate of $10.00 a year and are pleased now to offer Hanauma Bay staff and Hanauma Bay Education Program staff the special rate of $10.00 a year.

Memberships will be yearly, beginning with our annual meeting in February. Members receive a Friends Uhu T Shirt, bi monthly newsletter and priority invitations to special events. We thank those who donate with our bi-monthly newsletter.

We ask your patience as we are updating our web site to accommodate these changes. If you have any questions regarding membership, please contact [email protected].

Of course, the Friends happily accept donations beyond membership fees for our Friends of Hanauma Bay Scholarship Program, which benefits members of the Kaiser High School Wipeout Crew.

We are in the process of cleaning up our mailing lists. If you have been receiving the newsletter and are not a member, you will be removed from our mailing list. Those who have made a donation to the Friends will receive our newsletter and public and elected officials will continue to receive complimentary newsletters. If you are uncertain of your membership status, please email [email protected].

We’ve made excellent progress and things are improving at the nature preserve. We hope you’ll join is in our efforts.

ANNUAL DINNER - A REALLY GOOD SHOW

Our Annual Dinner on February 18 was a huge success. We are especially grateful to Congressman Ed Case who spoke about his conservation concerns and took questions from the audience. About 100 people showed up and many became members or made a donation and took home one of our cool new shirts. Isn’t that Mr. Paul Balosz from Kaiser High School, mentor of the Wipeout Crew, showing off his new shirt? Always listen to your teacher … Some of Mr. Balosz’ students did and had their picture taken with Representative Ward. Thanks to Anke for snapping these and many more pictures. March 2nd Clean Up

Almost 100 people came to help keep the nature preserve spotless. As usual, food wrappers / containers, cigarette butts and container tops topped the list of trash collected.

LiketheShirtsSay,“It’sNotaPark…It’saNaturePreserve”

Thanks to folks from Koko Head Elementary, the U.S, Navy, Hawaii Baptist Academy, Hawaii Chinese Baptist Church, Mid Pacific Institute, UH Manoa and UH ASCE, Kaiser High School, Hawaii Kai Lions Club, Pauahi Keiki Scholars at Kamehmeha Schools and several individual citizens. Wipeout Crew members took the lead and did a great job organizing and educating attendees about sunscreen. All of the cleanup pictures can be seen at, https://www.facebook.com/pg/hanauma/photos/?tab=album&album_id=10157137811378767 Unbeknownst to us, a video of the cleanup was made. MORE ON OUR ANNUAL DINNER

Congressman Case was happy to be here. Great thanks to Kathi Saks who catered the event and was hard at work all evening to help make it a success.

Congressman Case with Friends member Mike Feeley and Friends President Lisa Bishop and talking to our many attendees. Special thanks to Mike who did much of the work organizing the event and to Anke who made the tablecloths and the table décor. We thought it would be hard to top last year’s Annual Dinner. What are we going to do next year? Did someone say President Obama … ?

OLDIES BUT GOODIES

Thanks to Michael Schroeder who took these pictures long ago. After visiting last month, Michael was inspired to send us some of his bygone days pictures of the Bay. That looks like a signpost in the Keyhole. Does anyone know what it says? Let us know – [email protected]

HAWAIIAN CLEANER WRASSE Photo & Text by Larry Winnik

A recent article in the Star Advertiser states that “A lowly reef-dwelling fish known as the cleaner wrasse has been elevated into an exclusive club in the animal kingdom whose members have the ability to recognize themselves in a mirror.” Me, not so much! Sigh!

CHANGES

We thank Ron for his good work as Treasurer. He’s decided to step down as Treasurer but will remain on the board. And thanks to Leslie for stepping up to fill the treasurer job while continuing as secretary.
