I would like to thank the legions of clergy, public citizens, public officials and residents of the Dallas area who came to the Antioch Church recently as my family and I said farewell to our son, husband, father, sibling and uncle, Jordan Randle Blair. Your kind thoughts, your

poignant s tor ies and your expressions of sympathy were greatly appreciated and much needed. My son, “Randy”, gave his life to The Elite News, its readers, its advertisers and those who have come to rely upon the newspaper as a fountain of information in the Dallas metroplex. Jordan served the Elite News as its publisher. The paper was in good hands while he was at the helm of leadership. It will be difficult, if not impossible, to replace him. If Jordan were here, he would tell all of us to continue on with our lives, with our faiths and with our missions. He would implore us to remember that the whisperish periods of time that we live on this earth are great gifts from God, and that we must do all that we can to honor the Creator for His generosity and belief in us. More than 50 years ago when I began the work known as the Elite News, I knew that I would not be able to do it forever. I knew one day the trumpets would sound and my note would be played in Heaven, and the last story that I wrote would be my final one. It was that way for Jordan and will be that way for all of us. Jordan did not get the chance to say thank you to the many advertisers and friends who have supported the Elite News throughout the years. So, let me say it for him: THANK YOU! He believed in you, he trusted you, he served you. This paper, in the hands of new management, will continue in the legacy that Jordan helped to mold. It will continue to be the best source of information for the church and the community in North Texas. It will continue to be truthful, reliable and earnest. It is the only way that members of the Blair family know how to publish a newspaper. And it is what you can expect to receive for many years to come. May God continue to bless you and give you health, prosperity and love.

West Dallas celebrates opening of Bridge The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, a 400-foot white arch, the first of its kind located in the United States, was designed by the world-renowned Span i sh a rch i t ec t Santiago Calatrava, had its grand opening -- becoming the “Gateway to the West.” The bridge is seen as new opportunity for businesses and a new start for change within the community of West Dallas. This past weekend brought new life into a community that for years has been often over looked and sometimes forgotten, a weekend to remember, a weekend of history making for West Dallas community residence, business owners and its Chamber. The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, grand event and celebration marked three days of fun, cultural, and unity for the Dallas community and West Dallas. The weekend was filled with events for families and a time to come together in unity in an area of town that has been long over looked for its value and its people. The “Bridge O Rama” was the spark that started this memorable time, the brain child of the West Dallas Chamber ’s President , Randall White. Because of the Bridge O Rama, people from all over Texas came together to see new life and vigor from a pride filled community of strong people. The events included car shows, art galleries, baseball for the kids, fitness festivals, food, music, fireworks, church leaders praying together and the highlight of the weekend “The Parade of Giants” A history making parade of 15-foot-tall giant puppets of West Dallas Legends were built by special artist and community volunteers to honor i n d i v i d u a l s t h a t h a s b e e n instrumental in making a difference and giving back to the community of West Dallas. It was a sight to see! Thousands came out to see this grand parade of Giants. Fifteen, special artist were chosen from hundreds to work with local community volunteers (Young Life West Dallas, L.G. Pinkston- JK Living, Voice of Hope, etc.) and teams for one month to learn about

the contribution and accomplish-ments while creating their Giant. Some of the puppets that were honored: Mattie Nash – A long time

community activist who represented West Dallas on the Dallas City Council. Myrtle Davis – A community and political leader who is one of the namesakes of the largest recreational complexes in West Dallas. Bettie Odom of Odom’ Bar B Q Inc. – A long time West Dallas business woman and restaurateur who for many years served to meet the needs of youth, schools, organizations and churches within her community and beyond. She is also best known for her Soul Food and having The Best Ribs in Dallas” featured in D magazine 2006, 2008, and 2010. Mrs. Bettie Odom leaves a lasting legacy that will remain in the hearts and lives of all she touched. Hattie Rankin – A church worker who was so moved by the poverty in West Dallas in the 1930s, she started the Eagle Ford Mission. Andrea Flores Cervantes – A Los Barrios Undoes clinic founder who also established the first free summer lunch program in West

Dallas. Sarah Crockrell – In 1872 opened and managed the first bridge over the Trinity River, linking West Dallas for the first time with all major roads north and east. Hattie Henenberg – A member of the Texas “All Women Supreme Court” and in 1938 started a toy loan library for families in West Dallas. Rhoda Dragoo- In 1915 won the right for Mexican children to attend Dallas public schools. Judge Barefoot Sanders- Desegregation for Dallas ISD. Father Sebastian Val les – 1930s dreamed of establishing St Mary of Carmel a West Dallas Catholic school. Victor Considerant – An explorer who founded the French speaking La Reunion colony in what is today West Dallas. Julien Reverchon- A colonists who taught botany at what today is Baylor University Medical Center. Judge Jerry Buchmeyer – 1985 ruling that forever transformed the living conditions in west Dallas public housing projects. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow – 1930s Gangsters who waged a reign of terror in West Dallas. Barrow is buried in the Western Heights Cemetery. It was wonderful to see everything come together and the joy of family members coming to support the artist at work creating their giant. The artist looked to the community groups and family member to help bring a clear vision from their life and contributions. I had the pleasure of meeting the artist for Bettie Odom of Odom’s Bar BQ…Walter Johnson and Eric Pounce, two talented and gifted young artists demonstrated a passion and natural gift to create beauty from the simplest of things. Both expressed a special bond with the volunteers and the family of Mrs. Odom, one that will last a lifetime. The entire weekend of events brought Blacks, Hispanic and Whites together within the West Dallas community, together all making history for a new change and a new start, while bridging the gap of community and race.

Over 400 people gave standing ovations to Willard Stimpson, pharmacist and owner of Cut-Rate Pharmacy and Donald Stafford, retired Executive Assistant Chief of Dallas Police Department, Legacy Honorees at the 2012 Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas Annual Meeting Community Report Luncheon. The event was held on Friday, February 24, 2012 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. The honorees were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the Dallas Community in the healthcare and civil service professions. They passed their Legacy torch to Robert Mayes, a local pharmacist and Dallas Police Department Deputy Chief Vernon Hale who are the next generation of individuals who have made achievements in their professions and outstanding contributions to their communities. “Our honorees have a history of accomplishments in their professions which are exemplary,” said Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks, Urban League President and CEO, “and they continue to set high standards through their volunteerism and community service. Proclamations from U.S. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and Sta te Representative Yvonne Davis were also presented to the honorees. Our theme “I Am Urban League” was highlighted at the Luncheon when

testimonies were given by participants from five Urban League Departments. Donald Foreman representing our Veterans Program told of being on drugs and homeless after serving his country in the United States Air Force. He was referred to the League’s Efficiency Apartment Supportive Housing Veterans Program by the Veterans Administration. He has been drug free for six years and is a supervisor in charge of clinical staff members and respons ib le for the rehabilitation of 50 clients at the Dallas County Judicial Treatment Center. Glendel Johnson, representing the Housing Department, was at the brink of foreclosure when he came to the Urban League for help. His Housing Counselor was able to negotiate a much smaller mortgage payment with his lender. He can now enjoy his retirement and work only part time as a warehouse manager. It was not long ago that Darrell Brown was serving time in prison for selling drugs. After completing the Urban League’s Project 4 Victory Re-entry Program he is now employed as a Sales Consultant for a local car dealer. Jaycielle Jones had worked on her previous job for over 22 years when she was laid off. After working with the Urban League Employment Department she is thrilled with her new career and enjoys her professional work environment.

Nakia Douglas, Principal of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy, participated in the League’s 100 Fellows Program when he was a senior in high school. He says the program equipped him for college through the motivational speakers, college visits and workshops. He now offers the young men at his Academy exposure to an advanced college prep curriculum. In the League’s Annual Report to the Community, Dr. Mitchell-Brooks detailed the outcomes and impact of the investments of League supporters who contribute their time and funding. “Weaving the threads of each individual’s life makes us all a better community, thus a better city,” said Dr. Mitchell-BrooksNew Officers of the Board of Trustees were also sworn in and include Chairman, Jesse Crawford, Verizon Services Operations; 2nd Vice Chair, Habib Pourfakhrai, UPS; 3rd Vice Chair, Dr. Wright L. Our lesson for Church school was “Wisdoms Part in Creation” Prov.

8:22-35. The text call’s our attention to the fact that this world had an archi tect that planned God’s creation called “Wisdom.” The personification of wisdom is a figure of speech u s e d b y t h e

sages of old to help the hearer better relate to what is being spoken. In this lesson we see wisdom portrayed as “Lady Wisdom” in order to give us a down to earth perspective

on an intangible commodity, but true wisdom is fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. I am often amazed at those academic people that believe that all of creation is some kind of accident. I have seen many accidents in my lifetime but they always seemed to create disorder instead of order. Wisdom says in the lesson that she was there before the Lord created anything. She goes on to say “I was the architect at his side (God’s). Dear reader have you overlooked this much needed thing for life called wisdom? James 1:5 says to us; “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. (NLT). Without wisdom education is almost useless.

We held our Baptismal service between Church School and morning worship, we were glad to see the many that came to that service. Our morning message was delivered by Pastor L.T. Morgan from the subject “The death that Satan regrets” Col.2:8- 16.Death has always been the dread of mankind because it seem to be so final. The Bible teaches that Satan come but to steal, kill, and destroy, and death had its way with all humanity. Man was doomed to death and Hell and Satan was a happy camper, “But” Jesus died and rose again and took the sting out of death and the victory out of the grave, and said to mankind because I live you shall live.

Prayer Closet

Go with me once again into the prayer closet and give your undivided

attention to the model prayer as recorded in Matthew Chapter 6. Did you take note that there is no “I” or “My” in the model prayer? All of the personal pronouns are “We” and “Our.” What is the real significance in this kind of exclusion and inclusion? Well, you do know that self is the biggest hindrance to victorious Christian living. We need that special touch with God that demands that we crucify our self. We should pray for nothing which, if given to us, would in any way be harmful to those around us.

Dear Dr. Hollie:

My husband and I were married for three years and then we got a divorce because we just could not get along and I believed he was cheating. There were other issues as well that we were never able to work out. However, during our marriage we tried, unsuccessfully, to have a baby. It’s been a year since our divorce; I’ve moved on and am very happy. However, a few months ago, we were both at a mutual friend’s wedding. We got to talking and, with lots of champagne in our systems, ended up going to bed together. Now, I am pregnant! Go figure! I am happy in my life without him, and have no plans on getting back together. I don’t want to be connected to him in any way, so I’m thinking seriously about not even telling him that I am pregnant. I can raise this baby on my own, and maybe he can go on and find someone else to have a child with. I just think it would be for the best. I really don’t see what the problem is, but I have friends and family that tell me I shouldn’t take this route. Could you please tell me what you think and why?

Dear Pregnant,

I am shocked and disappointed that you think that you can just take a child and claim independent ownership of it. I think that you have a moral responsibility, if nothing else, to inform your ex-husband that he is going to be a father. What the two of you decide to do after that will strictly become your decision. Whatever you do, I suggest that in some way you allow him to help you parent this child.

When the world famous legendary radio personality Tom Joyner had to find a temporary replacement for h i m s e l f d u r i n g h i s w e e k s o f convalescing from surgery, he quickly turned to another radio legend to host his morning show that elevates the mornings for millions of listeners across the country. Joyner asked Skip Murphy, a radio legend in Dallas for fifteen years, to entertain his listeners and lead his team. This was not difficult for Murphy, a North Carolina native, who to the delight of hundreds of thousands in the DFW area has once again teamed up with broadcast phenoms Nanette Lee, Sam Putney, Wig and Chris Arnold to launch a morning show unlike any other in the country. “We want people to know that we are back,” said Murphy who spent 15 years with his team at a local Dallas radio station. “This time our audience is going to be global. We have been on the air for a period of months and we have listeners in China, England, South America, throughout the United States and all across the globe,” he said. The former show was called the Skip Murphy Morning Show. On a typical morning, nearly 500,000 people listened to the morning team for four hours. It became more than just a radio show. It was a celebration of life in which Skip, Nannette, Chris, Wig and Sam cajoled each other and entertained their listeners while bringing tears of intense joy and carnival-like laughter to those who listened to them. It was often said that

employers in the Dallas area knew that their workers could get little work done during the hours when the show was on the air. “We want people to know that we are back,” said Skip while sitting in the

North Dallas studio from which the team broadcasts their four-hour internet radio show five days each week. “We are the same great show, now in social media, he said. “It was God who led us back together as a team,” said Putney, a native of Houston who spent many of his early radio years in Los Angeles. “I worked with some wonderful people on the west coast, but I have never worked with a team of professionals like the one that we have assembled. After our old

show concluded all of us did not stay in contact with one another, but this was meant to be. We are more than a radio show. We are a family whose broadcast presence is crucial to the lives of all of those who listen to our show.”

The five of them ended their first collective radio run in 2007. All of them went their separate ways, sometimes not communicating with each other for months. In 2010, they decided to get back together, making a demo in June of that year. “We knew that the magic was still there, Putney said. Wig, the show’s producer who worked in radio with Murphy in North Carolina when they both were starting out in the business, characterized the show as a “social movement.”

“The impact that we have previously had in the lives of people will continue,” he said. “There were times in the past when we would be on air and Nanette would be talking to someone in an attempt to prevent them from committing suicide. We became very special in the lives of people and we intend to become even more so.” Chris, a native of Memphis, said that ‘Encore Entertainment’ will be the group’s brand name. “Even though our show is one the internet, there are advertising and investment possibilities available for companies, large and small. We know we have something special and we plan to share it with people around the world.” “While we believe that we are excellent radio personalities,” Nanette, a nationally known comedian said, “Our faiths are the foundations of what inspires us to do what we do. The NFL by far is the favorite professional Sports league. The NFL is so successful there is Church’s that change they’re worship services on Sundays to accommodate football fans. Believe me you can tell whether the Cowboys are playing an early or late game by attendants at early or late service. They can control the scheduling of Church service, yet they have a problem loose lips that they can’t control. Former Redskin, Saints, Bills, coach and Defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams has been accused of having a bounty on offensive players. In the Saints Super-bowl season allegedly, there were bounty’s on Curt Warner of the Cardinal, and Brett Favre of the Minnesota Vikings. Football has always had some type of reward system, in little league, high school, and college. They give helmet stickers for outstanding plays. Offensively there are rewards for Touchdowns, great catches, etc. defensively, fumble recoveries, caused fumbles, interceptions, etc. Your better player can always be recognized by the helmet decoration. In the NFL at time these guys would get little pools, throw in a few bucks, for first fumble, first interception etc. this almost always was a player only type thing. In most cases it was a positional thing. The defensive backs, line backers, D- line, management has always known but for the most part never participated.

According to reports the New Orleans Saints had bounties for knocking players out of game. Although that was always the underline message it was very seldom said. Because the NFL brotherhood has and unwritten rule, hurt but don’t injure. There is a big difference in hurt and injured. In tackling drills you always taught to hit through the target that in itself is physically impossible without injury. The equipment should protect from injury, or does the use of said equipment aid in injury. The helmet has been proven to be excellent weapon. There is Tidal wave of potential legal actions in the making, since Gregg Williams got management involved. His suspension is eminent, and the teams that he coached are sweating out repercussion from this. The players and ex-players are upset at the thought of one of their own would tell what’s happening in the confines of their locker room. For the benefit of you people that think these games are fixed, should realize that if they are, don’t let the players know, because they can’t keep anything without finding a reporter to tell. There has even been discussion of Sean Peyton being fired as coach of the Saints. is that too drastic. According to reports the Saints were told by the league to cut out the bounty, and they continued. This situation could get as big as Watergate.

The biggest drama locally has been The Dallas Mavericks/Lamar Odom circus...After the All-Star break, Odom did not return to the Mavs. There were rumors that he was trying to force a buyout, so that he could return to his beloved Lakers...There were whispers that his marriage to Khloe Kardashian was on the rocks...There was talk that his dad had serious health problems and words said that he just does not like DFW! I don't know the truth of the matter. I do know that Mark Cuban and his Mavs teammates have been patient, well even beyond patient. It was good to see Odom back on the court against the Oklahoma City Thunder Monday night. The Mavs are in the middle of 9 road games in 12 days and need all hands on deck. Hopefully Odom has worked thru the issues that kept him away...For the Mav's sake, let's hope so! The other thing I'm tired of hearing about is the drama between Pilar, Deion and the Sanders family...Pilar has now sued Deion for $200 Million and accused him of having an affair with Babyface's ex-wife Tracey Edmonds, which Ms. Edmonds denies. Last I heard Deion and Pilar were still living under the same roof...Well it's time for somebody to M-O-V-E out! I can't take sides, as nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors...I'm just saying the doors should close in separate residences. Hopefully Deion and his hopefully soon-to-be-ex, can finish this off quietly, fairly and quickly! Keep your eyes open for the April issue of Essence Magazine.

In the nearly 10 years that he has played in the National Football League, Dante Wesley has leaned on his faith and his health to allow him to survive a game that most men only dream of playing. “It has been a blessing to be in the league as long as I have,” said We s l e y, a g r a d u a t e o f t h e University of Arkansas/Pine Bluff, who was drafted in the 4th round by the Carolina Panthers in 2002. “There were plenty of guys who were better ballplayers than me when I was in college,” said Wesley, who attends the Abundant Life Church of God In Christ with his wife, Renetta, and their two small children. “I asked God to wrap his arms around me and allow me to do His will. I knew that I would be successful if I followed what the Lord laid on my heart.” Wesley, a resident of Cedar Hill who works out each morning for nearly three hours during the off- season, believes that he can play at

least three additional years in the NFL. “When my playing career is over I want to work with young people and I want to devote a large part of my life showing people how

they can live fruitful and healthy lives. When Dante and Renetta are not at home with their two children, Skylar, 6 and Dante who is 5, they can be found either in church or at a healthcare exhibit where Dante markets children supplements to people who come to his booth, particularly after seeing a picture of him in full NFL gear. “Most people are not giving their children a healthy diet,” said Dante, whose children eat a daily regimen of food supplements called ‘Manna Bears.’ “We want our children to have a full and adequate comple-ment of fruits and vegetables,” said Renetta. It saddens me to know that many individuals in our senior-community are not receiving the medical treatment they so desperately need due to lack information. Dual eligibles is an example of that; this plan has been around for over 10 years, but few know of its helpful benefits. Some of the eligible items are: o u t p a t i e n t s u rg e r y, h o r m o n e replacements, weight-loss items, eye glasses, hearing services, dental services, over-the-counter items, incontinence supplies, vitamins and minerals. In addition, there are companies that offer no cost transportation not only to

doctors offices but to grocery stores. There are also companies that serve dual eligibles that offer other services. As an example some pay all or a portion of part B of Medicare. This comes out of most people’s Social Security check and for 2012 it is $99.90. Dual eligibles are persons who qualify, in some way, for both Medicare and Medicaid coverage. Medicare covers their acute care services, while Medicaid covers Medicare premiums and cost sharing, and—for those below certain income and asset thresholds—long-term care

services and, unti l 2006, prescription drugs, among other services. We use the term “dual eligible” t o i n c l u d e a l l M e d i c a r e beneficiaries who receive Medicaid assistance, including those who receive the full range of Medicaid benefits and those

who receive assistance only with Medicare premiums or cost sharing. Our profile of dual eligibles, based on ana lys i s o f Med ica re Cur ren t Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) data, finds a diverse population. Although a high proportion have characteristics associated with being poor (e.g., female, minority, poorly

educated), they vary greatly in other respects (e.g., living situation, health status, age). We find that over one-third of dual eligibles are under 65, 38 percent have cognitive or mental impairments, 22 percent have multiple physical impairments, and 23 percent are institutionalized. Leadership is the capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose and the character which inspires confidence. It was 10 years ago when Coach "Snoop" Johnson watched as the

Lincoln Tigers celebrated a perfect season. Several fans from the Metroplex had come to the Fair Park to cheer for and congratulate the Tigers for their next to impossible feat of a 40-0 basketball season. Yea, you remember the squad - Byron Hopkins, Chris Bosh, Byron Eaton, and so on; but "Snoop" looked at me with a big smile and said "this can never be out done. It can only be duplicated.” The statement meant something to me because it spoke to the character of this coach! He was overjoyed, that a set of kids from our city had done what most basketball experts said was impossible. I was impressed with the fact the he was so happy for them. Let's not forget that Coach Johnson had led his Kimball Knights to the State Finals that year also. His team was led by a very talented guard by the name of Acy Law. His team was winning the game and lost on

a last second shot at the end of the game! Just like that the dream of a state championship was gone! I'm sure Coach Johnson could have stayed at home that day, or went to play golf or something, but he accepted the invitation to be a part of the celebration and he was truly happy for those young men and what they had accomplished. Now a decade later Coach Snoop and his Kimball Knights are about to do what some experts say is next to impossible, win Back to Back State Championships! It's really impossible when eight s e n i o r s g r a d u a t e f r o m t h e Championship team. Only leadership can get you through the regular season and the playoffs and to the Final Four. I heard about the sermon (smile) coach gave before, but it was the impact of those words that made the difference. The capacity to rally men and women to a common purpose and

t h e c h a r a c t e r w h i c h i n s p i r e s confidence! That’s what we saw in action on Saturday. The Knights were facing cross town rivals South Oak Cliff. Both SOC and Kimball are basketball powerhouses, and SOC had beaten Kimball twice this year! But the character of their coach inspired the confidence to win one of the biggest game of their young lives!Led by senior Shannon Lilly, Kieth Frazier, and D'Angeol Allen these young men put Snoop's words into action. Congratulations to the man behind the players. I have always believed that players are an extension of their coach and I guess you can say this proves my point! So Dallas/Fort Worth -GET THEM Ks Up!!!! The Knights are about to do the impossible! We just need one more sermon!! May God Bless you and Help us Change the world
