Oprah Winfrey once said, Be thankful for what youave; youll end up having more. If you concentrate on

Circle K members must remember and live these wisewords of Oprah Winfrey. On November 12, 2012, themembers of Circle K at the University of Hawaii at Hilopartnered with the Hilo High School Key Club to Feed

was baked garlic chicken and potatoes. Throughouthe day, our members were busy chopping numerous

pounds of garlic and potatoes, separating the chickennto two pieces, removing the skin from the chicken,nd preparing the rice, corn and paper goods. In addi-ion to the main dish, Circle K also baked and decoratedhocolate cupcakes. Although there was a lot that went

Every Step Counts:Strides to End Breast Cance

The Strides to End Breast Cancerwas and event that meant a lot tome. Roughly 30 years ago my grand-mother was diagnosed with breastcancer. My grandmother fought forsix months before she had lost thebattle. Although I was not yet bornwhen this occurred my mother wouldalways tell me stories about her andabout how great of a person she was.It seemed cruel to know that such agentle and genuine person could be

a victim of such a ruthless and relent-less disease. Since I was a young boyknowingofmygrandmotherssuer-ing, I had made a vow to do whateverit will take to help or aid to stop themurder of innocent people from thisdisease.

Now with the actual event, I wouldsay it was very successful. Althoughwe had to wake up quite early it wasdenitely worth it. The event washeld at the JW Marriott up in Sum-melrin. The area was gorgeous! Weall arrived at the JW Marriott roughly

around 6:30am. There were so many

sponsors at the event. I think I canspeak for us all when I say that Star-bucks was our favorite. They weregiving away free passion fruit teas!

By the time it hit 7:00, hundredsupon hundreds of volunteers andwalkers had started to pour in andtheeventwaspreparingtokicko. As we waited for the rest of the mem-bers to arrive at the event some of usheaded down to our designated zonewhere we were assigned with thetwo mile mark.

Once we were all settled at ourzone spot we awaited the walkersto slowly ood the streets. As thewalkers passed us we would cheer

them on with a U-R-O-C-K! You Rock! You Rock!, along with many othercheers. The walkers seemed very en-ergetic and happy with the event.

As we kept cheering them on wewere greeted with countless compli-ments for our support. Aside fromthe cheering and support we weregiving towards the walkers and sur-vivors, Therewas denitely a warmfeeling inside with the realization thatthese survivors, supporters, and may-be even some who is currently diag-nosed have so much faith and energy

to help rid of this horrible disease. It

was a real eye opener for me afeel that this was a truly touchinginspiring event to be a part of.

As the walk had come to a cwe had all walked back to theMarriott parking lot where we wed for the closing of the event. Aparticipants slowly left we had sed to help the American Cancer ety Advisors by working on breadown the lot. We had gone andlected all the chairs and tables astacked them on a cart. The mosdious work had to be the loadinall the left over water cases.

Aswenished loading thewwe all thought we were done. S

What is Day of the Child? Day ofhe Child: Children Uniting Nations

Annual Day of the Child (DOTC) isesigned to bring awareness to and

upport the needs of children whore living in and out of home care.he primary goal of the day is to se-ure long-term mentors for theseery special children. Each year we bring together 1,000

outh living in foster care through-ut the Los Angeles metropolitanrea and 1,000 community volun-eers (Mentors) for a day of fun in

Corporate Partners, Local Colleges,Universities and Community Organ-zations. The pair enjoy inter-activeeam building activities, carnival

rides, game booths, variety of foodand drinks and so forth.

This year DOTC was held at SantaMonica Pier and CSUDH Circle K In-

ternational had the sole privilege ofvolunteering in this event and get-tingtoknowpeoplefromdierentschools and dierent organization. But what stood out more for me inthis event was the fact that I hadto opportunity to be paired up withchild and just be a mentored for himfor a whole day.

I had the privileged to be paired upwitha5thgraderatrstmymenteewas a little shy and a bit of uncom-fortable due to the fact that he waspaired up with me and 4 other girls.

But as the day progress he wasstarting to open up little by littleuntil he got comfortable with us.

What made me happy was the factthat I made a huge impact on himand every time he wanted to go acarnival ride he would ask me Man-

ny, are you going to get on the ridewith me every time I said Yes .The day went by very quick and thetime to depart from my mentee wasfast approaching so we took advan-tage of time by riding as many ridesas we could have in a short amountoftime.Sothetimetodepartnal-ly came, for many mentors like mewe were dreading this moment be-cause we bonded with our menteesso much that tears started comingout when they left mostly becauseyou knew you made a huge impactto this childs life that it would besomething they would never forget.

ipBy the end of the night, everyone could tell thatchoosing Mr. CKI 2013

was going to be a toughdecision to make.

Twelve Greek gods from all over Southern Californiastood in the shadows of the colosseum, waiting fortheir battle to begin--the battle theyve been trainingthree long and relentless weeks for. Who would bethe ultimate Greek god? Who would be crowned Mr.CKI 2013? Which one of these divine and almighty menwould bring home the glory and honor to their family?

Thecrowdwaited patientlyand nally,at 6:30p.m.,one by one, the gods, adorned in their silk togas and lau-rel head wreaths, walked down the aisles of the room, entering the arena. For the next 4 hours, this would betheirbattleeld.

This competition consisted of three parts. First, eachcontestant had to emulate the god they thought theymost closely depicted. Along with their togas, they alsohad a prop or two that they modeled as they cat-walkedacross the stage. Just to name a fewthere was Aroswith his enchanting bow and arrow. Hermes with hismetallic winged sandals. Poseidon with his dashing tri-dent. Helios with his scintillating sun. In addition to theirprops, each also came up with a clever introduction for

themselves. Helios god of the sunhe could melt

the earth, but he would rather melt your heart. Alo, god of music.. he could strum his harp, but he wrather strum your heartstrings.

The next portion of the competition required eof the contestants to demonstrate his talent. Perhthe most essential component of this battle, this wdenitely give the contestants an opportunity tothemselves apart from the rest. Every god had inesting and unique talents, ranging from using mestrength to rip phonebooks in half to swallowing spoonfuls of cinnamon without water. Some talhad the crowd swooned. Once when the ever so ching Aros sang an acoustic love medley. Or when Hersteppedothestageandintothecrowdtondhisand dedicate a rap/song/spoken word to her.

The last and possibly the most challenging parthe battle was the interview. Separated into groupthree, the twelve gods had to answer a series of qtions. This portion helped demonstrate to the judeach contestants ability to think on their feet.

One Club. One Committee. One Goal. How do you measure late, sleepless nights, and

long days? How do you measure even one of those? How do you measure the night before a midterm, apaper, a lab report, and choosing to do somethingthat needs to be done for this organization instead? How do you weigh one of those choices? How doyou measure each sacriceboth innitesimallysmall, and extraordinarily large? Now, how do you

do it again and again, and again, and again for sixmonths? You cant. But these are all tangible things that every mem-

In these past six months, weve seenadversity and turmoil in planning this event un-like any year before; from resignations, to price in-creases, to funding cuts, and selling limitations.

But each time thereafter, we had not one, but sixco-chairs to pick us up, a supportive board to push

Despite all that, there could be only one win-er. At the end of the night, Sam Barke (Aphrodite) wasrowned! Chosen for his charisma and undying enthusi-sm, he proudly accepted! Ronnie Nguyen (Hercules), alose friend and worthy opponent, also took home two

wards, Peoples Choice and Best Talent Act!This night was undoubtedly an entertaining and un-orgettable experience for everyone. The best part of it

was the amount of money raised! All of it was to be do-ated to Project Eliminate, a district fundraising initia-ive that aims to reduce maternal and neonatal tetanus.

With the dedication and hard work of the contestantsnd fundraising committee, the willingness of the judg-s and hosts to volunteer their time, the generosity ofhe audience to donate money, over $1000 was made!

ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. Imagine how high thatwould be stacked in dollar bills! Close enough to reach

    Mount Olympus?! Quite possibly. :)

This organization succeeds when we act togetheras one. In all my life, Ive never been more proud tocall myself a UCSD Circle K Member, with this com-mittee, and with all of you here with me. Later thatnight was broomball. Although many people fell andleft with bruises, everyone had fun or at least a laugh.

Sunday began with a pancake breakfast providedby PCC members. Then there was a choice of eithergoing to a scavenger hunt at the Paseo or helping ata service event Kidspace Snow Days at the Kidspace

My day at CKI South was, without a doubt, exhilarat-ingandlledwithpureadrenaline.Idrovetotheeventwith several new members in my car, which was nicebecause I was able to get to know each of them, evengetting the majority of them pumped and willing to par-ticipate in the events.

Not gonna lie, at the event, I was a little worried thatit might be boring, with our club and other clubs justplaying games with each other. However, as soon as

the events were under way, I realized that I had strucka gold mine of pure adrenaline and competitive spirit. All the competitive teams from the other schools werefriendly, but at the same time, they had a spirit in themthat screamed Youre going down, making me all themore pumped for the days events.

I am so proud of my team, Team Cutthroat (Billy, Di-ane, Karen, Neil, Suraj) for blowing out the rest of thecompetitors in our block with their immense, ercedrive to win. I felt so alive and was ready to take down allother challengers. What reinforced this was the amountof energy coming from my teammates and our drive to

    wipetheoorwiththecompetition,hehehe.

For the jump rope skip, we had to use an insamount of concentration to coordinate each skipmuch that we got to the point where all of us were bling our knees from the exhaustion. We also hit the rwith the math problem, wheelbarrow, orange pass, shake that junk in almost record times. Balloon stowas for sure the most intense of the preliminariesmy teammates and I were so proud watching each er stomp away at our competitors.

The most intense match was without a doubt Sthe Bacon, the nal match between the best tefrom each section. I hadnt felt my body pump blooadrenaline at that rate for the longest time, so I watremely heated and aggressive. Look at the photomy teammates and I, and youll see just what Im ing about! It took me about 1.5 hrs before my adrenadisappeared after CKI South was over.

In the end, we got 2nd or 3rd place, and althoughdidntgetrst,Istillbelievethatmyteamperformphenomenally and made my day. CKI South will beeverrememberedasthedayIippedmylidand

Crazy Kompetition for InfantsNorth was an intense day of com-petitive events, along with an infor-mational workshop about the Pedi-atric Trauma Program (PTP). Withover 200 people spanning from19 dierent schools spread acrossNorthern California and Northern

Nevada, the events were split intothreedierentbrackets, andteamsof six competed in all of the eventswithin their respective brackets.

Ienteredthecompetitionwithveother friends under the team nameThe Nom-Nommers (I have noclue about the origins of this name),oneofveteamsthatrepresentedUC Davis. We even had matchingnon-club t-shirts to display our unity. We had never practiced any of the

events of the competition prior tothe actual date of the competition,so we decided to wing each eventand see how far that would take usin the tournament.

To our surprise, we performed ex-ceptionally well relative to many ofthe other teams. Our times for therelay events were above averageand we nearly dominated the Bal-loon Stomping competition withinour bracket. Although we didntobtain the top times for the relayevents, our scores for the otherevents compensated for our lack infast time trials.

It was nearing the end of the com-petition and so it was time for theannouncement of the top placingteam from each bracket. As the CKINorth Chair, Erin Szelagowski, be-gan announcing the winning teams,I felt enormous anticipation and

anxiety. The top four teams consist-

ed of three schools from Capital Di-vision (UN Reno, UC Davis, and SacState) and one from Golden GateDivision (UC Berkeley). This mysterywas announced to be a Human Ro-bot Battle, where each team choseone member to be the core of therobot. The goal of this nal event

wastoknockoalltheballoonsofall of the opposing teams, and ulti-mately becoming victorious by re-maining as the last team standing.

After an insanely crazy, slightlybrutal, and intensely chaotic ght,my team and I jumped and cheeredin celebration for our victory imme-diately after we heard the sound ofthe last balloon popping. As I wasjumping and cheering joyously, Inoticed blood dripping from my

nose. Although I am not positivelysure what caused the nosebleedas I had too much adrenaline rush-ing through me, and no amountof blood lost would have stoppedme from winning that last event togrant us the title of CKI North Cham-pions.

Overall, Crazy Kompetition for In-fants North was a successful event, and it is denitely listed as one ofmy most favorite and memorableCircle K events. Its not every daythat schools from all over North-ern California and Northern Nevadacome together to compete in a tour-nament with all of the proceeds go-ing towards a great cause, and sucha spectacle was immensely over-whelming for me. I am extremelyproud that my team and I compet-ed remarkably against all opposingteams and brought the title of CKI

North Champions back to UC Davis.

One of my proudest accomplishments this yearwould have to be meeting all of our clubs DistrictFundraising Initiative goals.

Back in March of last year when we were discussingclub goals, our board had an intense meeting wherewe listed out all of our goals in a determined man-

ner. During our color-coded, dry-erase marker goal-making session we established what we wanted toaccomplish in terms of service, membership, leader-ship, etc.

Since I was treasurer, one of the goals I was mostnervous about was fundraising. In high school, I hadexperience working on fundraisers that we do annu-ally. But implementing and collaborating entirely newfundraisers from the ground up was a completelynew concept to me.

Through trial and error I found that time is always ofthe essence to any successful fundraiser. Out of thevarious events I was involved in, the most successful

onesintermsofexecutionandprotswerethefund-raisers we planned weeks, if not months in advance.

During our most successful fundraising streak, wesoldbobadrinksintwoavorstoSanFranciscoStatestudents out in the quad for $3 apiece. We kept inconstant communication with our vendors, providingthem with orders, payments, and updates in order toensure smooth transactions. We learned that lettingour vendors know about our long-term fundraisingstrategy helped them understand our needs and al-lowed them to help us meet our goals.

Ive also learned from starting new fundraisers thata spreadsheet with projected expenses and protsnever hurts. It can be invaluable when planning outyour fundraiser. In addition to overestimating expens-es and underestimating gains to get your ballpark netprot,thespreadsheetcanalsohelpyouandthefun-draising committee brainstorm and revise expensesto see where you can cut unnecessary items or evenwhere you can get those expenses for free.

There are many things I have learned through myadventures in fundraising and I believe that this is thetrue accomplishment, meeting the goals was just theicing on top.

The LA Food Bank caters to shelters, schools, seniorhomes, and many more locations. The work they do istruly marvelous and being able to take part in this pro-cess is amazing.

OnMondaymorning,January14wewenttoourrstweekday service event. We had volunteered with theLA Food Bank before and were use to the large volun-

teer groups, so we were curious on how the volunteerprocess was on a weekday. There werent a lot of peo-ple,butwewereveryecient.

Wewereplacedinthefreezerandseparateddier-ent food items. It was interesting to learn that food lastmuch longer than the expiration date says. Food thatdid not have both the nutrition facts and expiration

date had to be thrown away. We had to throw awayboxes of bread because it did not have nutritional facts, although some of the food that had to be thrown away,it was placed in separate bin to be turned to dog food.So in reality nothing went to waste.

Wewereabletoseparateandsortvecratesoffoodbetween all the volunteers. The LA Food Bank is a ser-vice project that keeps you active for the whole day. There was not a time where we did not have anything

to do, and after a while carrying all the milk and juice re-ally wears a person down.

At the end of the project we were given a spoon thatsalso a pen, a spen if you will. Volunteering at the LAFood Bank always leaves us with a sense of accomplish-ment and achievement. I look forward to volunteeringthere again soon.

Well, I am still not entirely sure what exactly an OGM is it sounds like some sort of med-ical device or procedure but I am assuming it refers to non-board members. AlthoughI would certainly like to be in a board position someday, now ending my third semesteras a Circle K member I can certainly say that one does not have to be a board member

to be active or enjoy the livelihood of the organization. From running around paranoidof assassins to helping to local community paint a mural or leading a team at the recentWonder Games of Fall Training Conference, I have to say that it has been an incrediblethree semesters thus far. While time constraints are challenging, the time that I putinto this organization no matter how little or great, was well worth it. Ive certainlymet many interesting people in my time in this organization that I most likely would nothave the chance to interact with. The guy that trolls in the most hilarious ways, or eventhat girl who has an odd way of showing her appreciation of people comes to mind.

Ah, the memories -- enough with the rambling. At the end of the day were all here,as a sort of extended family, and I would like to thank each and every person that Ivemet for that. Id like to thank you all for my happier outlook on life, making me dothings out of my comfort zone, many less lonely nights, and of course, the memo-riesofwhichImsurewillbelledwithmanymoregreatadventuresinfellowship,

Thank you for waking up super early for service proects, for coming out to socials and fundraisers, for making new friends annew members feel welcome.
