Congratulations to the Bull Spectrum group on this 10th Annual Sale! A “solid run” would be an understatement, as this is one of the most inquired about, and well attended, Simmental sales the last decade has had. Thank you to all the participants, past and present, for allowing us at Transcon the privilege of promoting your marketing interests. It hardly seems like 10 years or more has gone by since Jim Smith first asked me about putting something together, then our first meeting with the Innisfail Auction Mart to book the sale date, to discussing names of breeders to invite and other things too of course that all started the “ball rolling”. Proudly, here we are now.

I really love the combination of quality and freshness that exists in the Czech Mate bullpen this year. I believe this group was, on summer grass, the best set of bulls ever raised at Czech Mate. I know, I know, I said that last year too, but I really believe they are even better this year. The fluidity of their movement is exceptional and good thick haircoats is all evidence of the moderate feed ration they have been developed on. Look for top prospects sired by Horizon and Poker Face.

Sons of “Romano” and “Thunder” will be some of the best Fullblood Simmental Bulls to sell anywhere and exist in the Virginia Ranch Bull Spectrum offering. A very good uniform group of Red Simmental bulls are also in the impressive Virginia Ranch bullpen. Several big investments have been made to this segment of the herd in recent years and it’s really been showing for some time now. I always appreciate the huge winter-ing area the Virginia bulls are placed in as it’s one of the “roomiest” bull development areas that will be found in the Simmental business. This probably helps to explain the excellent repeat customer following the Satchwell’s have earned.

The Black Simmental segment of “Spectrum” is always anchored by the Chalack’s Ultra Livestock. This family are some of the first in Canada to have started breeding Black Simmis! This string of bulls are always very well received particularly by Central and Southern Alberta ranchers. Look

for the feature 2 year old bull that is simply too closely related to keep.

Another set of bulls that I have to appreciate a “more is not necessarily better” management are this year’s group from New Trend Cattle Co. This will be the biggest string of bulls ever brought to the “Spectrum” from the Massey family and also show nice athleticism and fresh full haircoats.

Wolfe Fleckvieh have been contributing very strongly for the last couple of years to the powerful Fullblood Simmental contingent at Bull Spectrum. These bulls carry very proven Fleckvieh cow families in their lineage and are very purposefully bred with genetic attributes as the main criteria.

We welcome Chad Smith of Clearwater Simmentals to Bull Spectrum with two Fullblood Simmi bulls. Chad inherits a position in the sale through his own pedigree and a promise made to his Dad that if they returned to the business they could be a part of the Spectrum again. A performance bull and a calving ease candidate separate this string of two.

We always like to remind the public of a huge buying advantage that you have at Bull Spectrum, namely, the “3 bull discount”. This allows you to stretch your bull buying dollars with a 5% discount offered on purchases of three or more bulls. This really adds up as it is discounted on your total purchase, not just the “3rd” bull!

Let us know if we can help you with your any of your purchasing needs or appraisals before your arrival. In any event, call on us if you are not able to attend to use our trusted, industry leading order buying services.

Happy “10th”,

Jay Good

Congratulations to this year's winner:

Homo Polled. Our lead off bull is one we are extremely proud to offer the industry - Keystone is flat out good! His dam is our first Crosby daughter to calve and boy are we happy we have more of them! Heirloom 112Y is picture perfect – a huge rib shape, great udder attachment and perfect temperament. Her first calf really puts it all together – the word “solid” best describes this bull. He has so much muscle shape and character with that huge hip and thickness that all Horizon calves possess. He moves out free and easy and commands your attention.

Keystone started out with just a 93 lb birth weight and put up an adjusted yearling weight of 1534 lbs, gaining 4.19 lb/day at home. His EPDs also read very well – he is above average for calving ease and is in the top 15% for both weaning wt (+74.6) and yearling wt (+108.8).

His sire, Horizon, is fast becoming a bull known for producing high end, quality offspring – his first daughters that sold last fall set the pace at every sale they were at, and his sons this spring will do the same! Add to that, the maternal power Keystone is packing and we believe he has what it takes to be one of the top Horizon sons available this spring.

We will be keeping an in herd semen interest on him and can’t wait to see how he will impact our herd!

2Homo Polled. Skyline is very similar in size and type to our lead off bull with the added bonus of the much desired blaze face with an awesome dark red hair coat and large testicles. He has a birth weight of 97 lbs and should sire calves that are born easily with an abundance of style and muscle shape. His calving ease EPD of +11.3 is in the top 10%, and his birth weight EPD of +1.8 is in the top 3% of the breed. Skyline’s dam always raises top end calves – last year’s bull sold at this sale for $5,800 to D. Maronda for use on their heifers. 311A moves out like a cat and is a pen favorite to many. He has the same quality, style and shape to the Lot 1 bull but perhaps with a bit more calving ease. You will like this bull a lot!

Skywalker is just a complete standout – some people think he is our best this year. He looks like a herd bull – huge rib shape, a large powerful hip, a proud look and walk to him along with great testicle development. He has a great hair coat and awesome color with that sought after blaze face! His dam is an outstanding Starquest cow who is one of our best. Last year’s bull sold at this sale for $6,500 to the Millers at Okotoks and before that another son sold to the Stoybergs at Innisfail. She always produces great calves for us – her daughter this year raised the lot 14 bull. Skywalker is a bull that will sire very marketable progeny that weigh heavy and generate those big dollars for you.

Just imagine the steer calves this guy will sire – money in the bank! His dam happens to be the grandmother of our Lot 1 bull, who also produced CMS Tequilla 719T, the donor female in the prestigious Double Bar D herd. 22K has done it again – we were really hoping for a heifer as they have been very few, but she always raises top sons as well. Every one (now 9 in total) has gone through this sale. Skyway has great length, thickness and he really gets out and travels. He is from a young sire that is on everyone’s radar and from a very good and consistent cow family, and 22K happens to be the grandmother of the Lot 4 bull, and the great grandmother to the Lot 1 bull. He will sire calves that weigh up in the fall and are easy to sell.

Homo Polled. We have three sons of our Lady 202S cow, leading off with Luongo. He is sired by the great Crosby bull who topped the Kopp dispersal sale at $36,000. Luongo is a full brother to the bull that Huxley Colony bought at this sale last year and MI Simmentals purchased in 2012 for their heifer pen. He is an impressive individual – he has great length, depth of rib, a massive hip and large testicles. From an amazing dam that we could write a book on, she always gives us great calves, male or female. Luongo will make an impact on a calf crop sired by Crosby and from Lady 202S – he is genetically superior!

Duchene started out in life with a very easy birth weight of just 88 lbs and has grown into a good sized, well put together bull – just a bit more compact than his full brother. We had two full sibs to these guys sell in last year’s sale, one going to Homestead T in Manitoba for $13,500 and the other selling into the S7 herd from Cochrane at $5,300. We called this guy Boumeester due to the extra size and stretch he possesses. He has great depth of rib and really packed on the pounds this year – gaining 4.12 lbs/day. His dam is another farm favorite, sired by Bodybuilder and the great Zaila 8Z cow. She has always provided great calves for us – we have many daughters and grand daughters in our herd (one daughter raised the lot 22 bull). Last fall one grand daughter sold at National Trust for $17,000 to Starwest in BC and at Cow-A-Rama last fall, a daughter led off our consignments selling for $8,500 to Flying F in SK.

Homo Polled. Sochi is a full brother to our high selling black bull last year going to Huxley Colony. This is a bull we really like – extremely long bodied, huge rib shape and great muscle expression along with large testicles. Like all Poker Face sired cattle, Sochi has an awesome, smooth front end and great neck extension. His dam is a great, young, Heavyweight daughter who is a real beauty with superior udder attachment. 307A is, without a doubt, one of the best black bulls we have produced. The Poker Face sired calves have shown to have great carcass numbers. Sochi will leave his mark on a calf crop!

Our power black bull, 323A, had a bigger birth weight of 112 lbs, but when you see him you’ll know why. He is a larger boned bull with loads of middle, top and is very well muscled. You watch this guy move – he is impressive! From a great Starquest cow who adds a lot of power to her calves. Last year’s Texas son sold to Hand Hills Colony in this sale, and her other bulls have also sold well through our annual sales. If you aren’t afraid of a bit larger birth weight, and need to add pounds to a calf crop, then Subban should be on your list – as I said, he is impressive!

Homo Polled. Toews is a real interesting young bull. He is hetro black and homo polled and comes in a complete, stout made. moderate package. He is solid black, with big testicles, good body length, has a huge hip structure and full lower quarter. 322A has decent calving ease built in. Toews comes from a first calving Dirty Harry daughter, whose own dam is a maternal sister to the great breeding Tradmark 756T bull now owned by Stout Bros and Skors. If your search is for a bull to use on a group of young cows, or mature heifers, Toews needs to be considered.

We sold numerous embryo bull calves from her a few years back with great success – 335A is her last natural calf. Django is a neat made, smooth shouldered, long bodied and super quiet young bull. He weaned off his 14 year old dam at a very respectable 852 lbs. He had a little set back during the brutal cold weather, but is coming on strong. Mikita is a young May born coming 2 year old bull that we liked so much last fall we decided to take a chance on him, give him some time to grow, and sell this spring. We really appreciate him for his genetic makeup – out of a Red Label daughter of the MFI 179R cow who is very hard to fault and the True Grit bull who was a past high seller at Bull Spectrum. Mikita looks as if he will be a calving ease sire. He has a smaller bone structure to him and a nice, tidy front end along with just an 85 lb birth weight. He also has as much libido as any I’ve seen – I don’t think he’ll have trouble finding cows in heat! Mikita is a nice made, extra aged bull that could cover a few more cows for you than most yearlings.

Being a 375T son, his use is limited due to the fact we have kept a number of 375T daughters in our herd. We have used him for two calf crops and his calves have all come easy, grow fast and have a great look to them. His heifers in the keeper pen are very good, and his son selling as lot 15 are a testament to what he can produce. Selanne was an early April calf who weighed 1400 lbs at 10 months of age, had 41 cm testicles and his dam was one of our favorites that went to Wade Hannah when he bought the group of cows from us. He has been a trouble free, easy going herd bull who will cover a large number of cows – he will not disappoint, you can buy with confidence!

VIRGINIA HIGHSTAKES 174A

Full Fleckvieh. Highstakes is going to lead off the Virginia Ranch bulls this year. He is one of the favorites in the pen and should go on to be a breeder’s bull. Cannot say enough good things about his mother. She was purchased through the last ever Big Horn sale, from Anchor D Ranch. We have two of her daughters in our herd. A daughter sold to Nolara Farms (that weaned off a 900+ lb bull calf this fall as a first calving heifer), and a daughter that sold to Okotoks Fleck this fall whom was the second high seller in the VR string at Cow-A-Rama 2013. This bull has a tremendous foot on him…note of interest, should the purchaser wish to lease him back to Virginia Ranch…we would jump at the chance.

We have sold progeny from her to MI Simmentals of Okotoks, Maronda Simmentals of Lomond, AB and Mullen Land & Cattle Co. of Strathmore. We have a daughter in the herd and now we are offering Quattro.

She is the mother to IPU Newsmaker, a bull that makes his home at Crossroad Farms; they in turn sold the hell out of his sons in their last year’s bull sale in SK. She is also the mother to Ms. Red Essence that Randy Ward purchased in the 2009 Simmsational sale for $12,750. **Note Ms. Red Essence is the mother to the next bull in the catalog. Going back to this bull…Note: that Breakout 305A is a March 1st calf and weighed 840 lbs on August 31st, with an awesome 928 lb adj weaning weight. Take a good long look here!

In the spring of 2012, I wanted to flush Randy Ward’s famous IPU Red Pocahontas 52N to something different so I used the two straws of the old bull ER Red Deck 639D, that I had deep in the semen tank; hoping to get heifer calves that I could put back into the herd. He was April born so we decided to keep him on until a 2 year old and offer him in this year’s Bull Spectrum. To top that off he is very long sided and clean up through his front. He is a full brother in blood to our 2014 Canadian Bull Congress, Bull-Nanza Champion bull. This bull is conditioned to go to work. This bull is very structurally correct; smooth shoulders and exceptional length. Andy carries himself very well on a great set of feet and has an excellent disposition. Andy was a twin with a birth weight of 70 lbs and an actual weaning weight of 815 lbs. The pedigree behind Andy, along with the calving ease traits that he brings to the table, make him a very desirable bull.
