SHANNON LECLAIR Times Reporter Last week the Fraser Institute released their re- port card on Alberta Schools. Some of Strathmore’s schools did not fair well according to the report, which focused on elementary schools. The average rating for the Strathmore area, which is based on the past five years, states that the area is below average. “The Fraser Institute seeks to define quality ed- ucation and good schools in terms of single test scores, despite the fact that multiple-choice, ma- chine-scored, paper-pencil standardized exams can only measure a fraction of the intended learning outcomes in the Program of Studies,” said Super- intendent for Golden Hills School Division Dianne McBeth. McBeth said Alberta Education annually monitors results for each jurisdiction and their schools on a variety of measures linked to the four broad goals established by the Government of Alberta for the learning system. “The Fraser Institute selects just some of these measures, and de-contextualizes them, to produce a ranking of schools,” said McBeth. “For reasons of integrity, the analysis, interpreta- tion, use and communication of results should ad- here to the purposes for which they were intended.” Every school considers results achieved as a basis for developing a three year Education Plan, which is reviewed annually. McBeth said when viewing the Fraser rankings, it’s important to think about what is and isn’t being measured and reported. “The problem with the Fraser Institute report is that it’s a big public document that has some reader- ship because it’s big and flashy but it’s totally, in our minds anyway, it’s totally inaccurate,” said Wayne Funk, principal of Westmount Elementary. “It’s an inaccurate picture of what our school rep- resents and we work tremendously hard to improve our school every year. For him (Peter Cowley) to say we’re downward trending, might have to do with the students we are receiving and what their status is at home and all that kind of stuff. That all plays into it. We’ve got lots of really strong students that come from tough home situations, but there’s lots that are in the other side of the picture as well.” Funk said they recognize the diversity of their stu- dents and they empower kids to be proud of where they come from and who they are. While it won’t show up on an achievement exam, it might make them a great citizen someday. He said the achieve- ment exams are a snap shot and for some kids a variety of different factors could reflect on how they did on the exam. Last week the Fraser Institute released their re-port card on Alberta Schools. Some of Strathmore’s schools did not fair well according to the report, which focused on elementary schools. The average rating for the Strathmore area, which is based on the past five years, states that the area is below average.

“The Fraser Institute seeks to define quality ed-ucation and good schools in terms of single test scores, despite the fact that multiple-choice, ma-chine-scored, paper-pencil standardized exams can only measure a fraction of the intended learning outcomes in the Program of Studies,” said Super-intendent for Golden Hills School Division Dianne McBeth.

“For reasons of integrity, the analysis, interpreta-tion, use and communication of results should ad-here to the purposes for which they were intended.”

Every school considers results achieved as a basis for developing a three year Education Plan, which is reviewed annually. McBeth said when viewing the Fraser rankings, it’s important to think about what is and isn’t being measured and reported.

Strathmore High School, SHS, teamed up with Crowther memorial Junior High this past Tuesday evening for their seventh annual Silent Auction, Concert and Bake Sale. The Grade 7, 8, 9, and senior high school bands are all directed by Karly Zinken, and she has done a fabulous job for a number of years. SHS would like to thank the 86 businesses that donated items for the silent auc-tion. The SHS Band and the Grade 8,9 Band will be attending the Alberta Band Association Festi-val of Bands in Red Deer in may. They managed to raise approximately $3,000 through the bake sale and silent auction.

Wendi Tashlikowich Photos Continued from Page 1“We believe so strongly that educa-

tion is more than just a set of numbers. Data can be skewed any way that it needs to be skewed. Education is about schools being safe, about schools be-ing fun, about kids learning skills that will lead them through life socially and in their workplaces,” said Funk.

“It’s not just about the academics, that’s why we’re here, but there’s all these other factors that come into play. We recognize our cultural diversity, we had a pow-wow last week, that’s a huge part of what makes Westmount, is that cultural diversity that a lot of our other schools in Strathmore don’t have.”

McBeth and Funk are not the only ones who feel the report card does not properly reflect how the schools really are.

“I would love to see the Fraser Insti-tute come into our building, see what’s happening in our classrooms, what our teachers are doing, the changes we’re making to assessment practices,” said Kevin Lane, principal of Wheatland El-ementary.

“Our teachers are doing great things and how our school comes out on a

province wide scale, it’s not as impor-tant to me as what’s happening in our classrooms here every day.”

Lane said they will not be changing their practice based on what Fraser Institute said. They plan to continue what they have been doing because they feel it’s in the best interest of kids and that the teachers are doing good things in the classrooms.

“Sometimes the comments, ‘oh we need to improve, improve, improve’ are a little bit hurtful because our teachers are going flat out,” said Lane.

“Most parents in our rural school di-vision send their children to the neigh-borhood school which strives to pro-vide a well-rounded, quality education and community-building opportunity for every student regardless of indi-vidual means or circumstances,” said McBeth.

She recommends that parents and interested individuals who would like a better idea of how a local school is doing, contact the principal for results achieved and improvement efforts. Paulette Chotowetz, principal of Sacred Heart Academy, which was also listed in the report, could not be reached as of press time.

The primary goal of every trained tanning professional should be to teach sunburn prevention to every client. The tanning process actually creates two different forms of natural protection against sunburn. Melanin shields skin cells, protecting each cell form getting too much UV exposure. Extra keratin, (a fibrous protein that provides structure to the top layer of your skin) migrates to the surface of the skin, thickening it, which makes the skin naturally more resistant to sunburn. These two steps combine to create a powerful natural sunscreen that doesn’t wash or wear

off adding another level to your sun protection arsenal.

Council for the Town of Strathmore is shelving the idea of changing from a town to city status – for time being anyway.

The possibility of switch-ing Strathmore’s status was discussed during the regular council meeting on March 16.

A change requires a mo-tion from council requesting the Minister of Municipal Af-fairs to modify it.

There was concern about whether jurisdiction over Highway 817would be given to the town. Administration met with Alberta Transpor-tation representatives on March 16.

“According to the meet-ing with the fellow this af-ternoon, he mentioned that he does not believe that 817 would be a penetrator high-way,” said Deputy Chief Ad-ministrative Officer Linda Nelson.

“So we would have control and we would be respon-sible for the maintenance: capital operating costs for 817.”

Mayor Steve Grajczyk said he would like to see that in writing before agreeing to anything. He would also like to have an internal study done, checking out the pros and cons involved in gain-ing city status. He said he would like to keep it very transparent for the public. Councillor Bob Sobol said he is sure one of the argu-ments will eventually be that people have just left the city to come to a town and that they don’t want to live in a city.

“I don’t think we’re at the size yet that warrants enter-taining the status of city,” said Sobol.

“I could certainly be wrong in that, but I’m just worried about spending an awful lot of staff’s time and money on this project.”

After lengthy discussion and a defeated motion to re-examine city status issue in one year’s time, council vot-ed in favour of bringing the issue back to council cham-bers every six months. All of council was adamant about keeping the public informed and eventually hosting infor-mation sessions.

Mayor Steve Grajczyk, members of council and town administra-tion were at the Strathmore Sta-tion on March 17 for St. Patrick’s Day serving food and drinks to the guests. Grajczyk raised $100 for the first piece of cake to add to the $5,001 raised from the evening. All of the money has been donated to the centennial committee.

The com-mittee will plan a celebration that will honor the Town’s history and prepare it for the next 100 years of success by celebrat-ing its unique past and extraordinary future.

H2S AT KinSMen lAKe With the recent warm weather and melting of snow, the inflow of

stormwater into the Town of Strathmore’s Stormwater System has in-creased. This increased flow has resulted in the displacement of an-aerobic water, which is the result of decomposed organics in an oxygen absent environment under the ice in Kinsmen Lake. Further, this has led to the formation of H2S gas, which is trapped under the ice on the lake and only permitted to escape through the outfall under Center Street and behind Lakeside Views.

The Town of Strathmore and EPCOR Water Services are aware of the issue and have been monitoring the situation daily for some time. An approximate 10m perimeter has been established around these outfalls and the public are asked not to enter the barricaded areas due to risk of exposure to high levels of H2S gas. The H2S levels outside of the perim-eter are not considered dangerous or a threat to human health. H2S is a gas that the human nose has a high sensitivity to, and as such, can be recognized in extremely low concentrations.

There is very little that can be done currently, other than monitoring, flushing and venting. The Town and EPCOR will be experimenting with flushing the culverts in the area, as well as venting the lake following the Family Day celebrations.

In the event that H2S concentrations increase to a level that is con-sidered to be of risk, the Town and EPCOR will take necessary steps to resolve the issue. At this time, this situation is considered low risk, and more of an inconvenience based on the low concentrations outside of the immediate vicinity of the outfalls.

Going forward, the Town and EPCOR will investigate what solutions could be implemented to prevent this situation from reoccurring in the years to come. Potential long term solutions include chemical treatment to reduce organics in the lake, an activated carbon filtering solution to absorb H2S, as well as the implementation of water circulation equip-ment.

if you have any questions or concerns related to this issue, please do not hesitate to contact the Town Office at (403) 934-3133.

Trouble Sleeping at Night? Insomnia is one of the most common

sleep disorders today. Insomnia is actually due to excessive stress, due to which a person gets into a cycle of sleeplessness. However a person will feel tired and lethargic, making them consume a lot of caffeine (coffee, energy drinks etc.), which again cause them to evade sleep. Here are a few ideas that might just help you get a good night sleep,

1. Schedule a relaxing period such as a hot bath or shower before going to sleep, to separate your body from your day’s stresses

2. Keep your bedroom quiet, dark and at a cooler temperature

3. Keep a regular schedule by going to bed at the same time every day and don’t go to bed until you feel sleepy

4. If you nap in the day and then have trouble sleeping at night, cut out the nap all together, so you feel tired and sleep through the night

5. Exercise regularly in the morning or early afternoon but nothing to strenuous in the evening. Maybe a relaxing walk in the evening closer to bedtime will help.

6. If you feel hungry in the evening, have a light snack or glass of milk (warming it up sometimes helps). Heavy meals close to bedtime can result in discomfort and further sleep disturbance.

7. If you can’t fall asleep, don’t lie there and get anxious or frustrated, leave your bedroom to read, watch TV or do something relaxing, and return to bed only when you feel sleepy again.

8. Caffeine is a stimulant, which keeps your brain awake and alert. It is contained in coffee and most sodas. So if you are drinking too many cups of coffee, tea or pop after 2pm, your brain is going to be in overdrive for hours after consumption. Try to gradually cut back earlier in the day and you will see a difference in your sleep pattern

9. Let go of your thoughts. Remember, how falling asleep used to never be a problem in childhood? It was our carefree nature that allowed us to fall a sleep quickly. Our minds were uncluttered in childhood and the stresses were as simple as what toy we would play with. Meditation before going off to sleep also helps a lot. This will slow down and relax your mind. Think of some of the most relaxing moments in your life, and with practice, it becomes easier… just find your ‘happy place’.

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., CrowfootParliamentary Report

Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson says that the Conservative government’s 2011 Budget, the Next Phase of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, will build on the efforts the previous two federal budgets continuing to protect and create jobs; help hard-working Canadians and their families; grow the economy; reduce the federal budgetary deficit and eliminate it.

“Our budget delivers more for seniors, more for families with children, and more for our com-munities,” Sorenson says. “Budget 2011 provides

an enhanced Guaranteed Income Supplement for many seniors in our riding: up to $600 for single seniors and $840 for couples. We want to forgive up to $40,000 of the loans new family physicians have and up to $20,000 for nurses to attract them to our rural communities.

“Families trying to provide their children with arts education (music and dance lessons for exam-ple) will have a tax credit. Caregivers taking care of loved ones will get a tax break for their efforts. We have a new $3,000 volunteer firefighters’ tax credit; and the waiving of license renewal fees for hunters and firearm owners.

“Again, we are improving federal student loans

program for Alberta students; and increasing support for re-search and technology, including $50 million in funds for agriculture innovation. These are important initiatives that will serve us in rural Alberta,” MP Sorenson points out.

“Canada is emerging from the global economic reces-sion in a better position than virtually all other countries. We have the lowest budgetary deficit. Canadians understand that we spent that money to save and create jobs during the recession. Budget 2011 maps out the efforts we will take to continue to pay down debt and yet continue spending on programs and services Canadians value highly. It is a good balance, in my view. It is a low-tax plan to create jobs and growth.

“We continue to build on the work we have been complet-ing with provinces, municipalities, local groups and commu-nities. As the government, we have widely consulted Canadi-ans to deliver what we need to ensure a prosperous future.”

After witnessing first hand how can-cer can ravage a family, 15-year-old Dyl-lan Duperron has decided to do his part to make a difference. Beginning March 14, Duperron laced up his sneakers in Lethbridge and hit the pavement. He is running from Lethbridge to Grande Prai-rie, approximately 959 kilometres apart, to raise money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

“He came up to me last spring and said, ‘I’ve been thinking of doing a run for cancer, what do you think about that?” said Boni Duperron, his mom, who is along for the journey.

His Great-uncle Romeo passed away from cancer a few years ago, and Boni said Dyllan was at the age where he could see the effects.

“He wasn’t able to make it to the fu-neral, so this is his way of showing his support for that (part) of the family,” said Boni.

Many people in his family have had cancer, with a few succumbing to it and others surviving it.

Dyllan and Boni spent the night in Strathmore on March 18, staying at the Travelodge because, “This is the first hotel we’ve found with a hot tub,” said Dyllan.

He trained using a treadmill and now is running between 25 to 30 kilometres a day. Dyllan brought three pairs of run-ners with him and as of March 18 was already onto his second pair. Dyllan’s personal goal was to make it to Grande Prairie at the end of April, but they are beginning to think it may take until the end of May. He has set his sights on rais-ing $30,000 to $40,000 and still has a long way to go.

Dyllan has already decided he won’t be running again next year, but he does plan to hold fundraisers at home in Val-leyview, AB, to continue helping with cancer research.

When asked how he felt after almost a week on the road, all Dyllan had to

say was he is “just sore every where.” To make a monetary donation go to any Alberta Treasury Branch and submit it to the trust account for Dyllan Duper-ron, account #879-110918901, or send a cheque to the Alberta Cancer Founda-tion. Tax receipts will be issued through the Alberta Cancer Foundation for all donations over $15. People interested can also track Dyllan’s progress by go-ing to www.hopeforcure.info

Fifteen-year-old Dyllan Duperron has been on the run, literally. Duperron is running from Lethbridge to Grande Prairie to raise money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. His mom, Boni, is following him on his journey. On march 18 the pair stopped in Strathmore to rest.

Wheatland students awarded for their reading skillsShannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

Wheatland Elementary School awarded the top readers out of the Grade 4, 5 and 6 classes, as a part of the Calgary Educational Partnership Foundation and the Calgary Flames ‘ Reading... Give it a Shot Program’.

“The program began January 10 and finished this past Monday, March 14, and for the 63 days in between stu-dents tracked the minutes they read. For each 100 minutes they have read, they are rewarded with a bookmark with one of the Flames players on it,” said Gillian Zandee, a teacher at Wheatland.

There were a total of 24 bookmarks the kids could earn, and thanks to the help of the Parent Council and dona-

tions the school was able to award the top readers. All of the kids who par-ticipated also had a chance to be in the draw for two different sets of Calgary Flames tickets.

“Once again our results have been fantastic,” said Principal Kevin Lane.

Wheatland has been participating in Reading... Give it a Shot for more than 10 years, and Zandee said the kids have read an amazing number of minutes. The top reader in each class was given a $25 Chapters gift card. The most improved reader, Payton Vogel, was given a Flames jersey, a Flames hat and two tickets to a game.

The top three readers overall were Kendra Teunissen, Rachel Huhn and Brook McMurray. Teunissen was given a Flames t-Shirt and magnet set for third place. Huhn won a Flames Heri-tage Classic jersey for second place, and McMurray won a signed Cur-tis Glencross official Flames Jersey. Chelsey Nelson’s name was picked to win two tickets to the March 30 Flames game, and Cameron McInnis won three tickets to the April 6 game against the Edmonton Oilers.

Most little girls dream of one day being a princess, wearing a tiara and beautiful gowns. For one Strathmore teen, it is like a dream come true. Shelbi Ram-say, 15, took part in the Miss Teen Alberta-World pageant in Calgary on Febru-ary 20. Ramsay took the crown and title of Miss Teen Wheat-land County-World, representing Strath-more and Wheatland County. Ramsay was chosen as one of the 18 titleholders out of nearly 50 contes-tants to participate in the Miss Teen Canada-World com-petition in Toronto in July, which is the preliminary for Miss Teen World.

“Of almost 50 contestants they picked 18 that they crowned who will go to the national pageant in Toronto in July, each one of the 18 represents her community,” said Cindy Ramsay, Shelbi’s mom and one of her biggest support-ers.

Their hair dresser had done make-up and hair for Miss Teen Canada, and after hearing Cindy mention that Shelbi wanted to get involved in pageants, she rec-ommended this one to her.

It was thanks to a television show that Shelbi first began thinking about competing in pag-eants.

“From watching Toddlers and

Tiaras, and it was just different. I like modeling and stuff and I’d never really done something like that before,” said Shelbi.

After filling out the application to take part in the pageant, there is an audition. The applicants are interviewed on Skype, where the girls are selected by who is ready to attend the pageant. They had

to wear an evening gown and bathing suit, but there was not a talent portion in the Alberta com-petition. There will be a talent portion in the Canada com-petition, but it’s not mandatory. Shelbi plans to showcase her talent of sing-ing.

“It’s not an actual beauty competi-

tion like it used to be. They are judged on overall. So you don’t have to weight 95lbs, there were girls of all shapes and sizes there this year which I thought was re-ally great,” said Cindy.

“It’s just about how you pres-ent yourself and who you are in-side. The motto is, ‘be your own kind of beautiful’,” said Shelbi.

They will be in Toronto for eight days, which are prepara-tion days. They will also have a chance to see some of the sights, after rehearsals.

The talent show is a different day than the actual pageant. The top three will perform at the pag-eant. There is also an opportunity to fast track. If a girl is top in tal-ent, or the most photogenic then

they she be fast tracked, which means she will move up into the top 20. There are a number of ways to fast track. The pageant officials would also like the girls to raise a minimum of $400 for the Free the Children charity. If Shelbi is one of the top fundrais-ers she will get to go to where Free the Children is and help out first hand.

Right now she is planning to do a bake sale fundraiser and pos-sibly freezie sales, at her school to help raise money for the char-ity. Melissa David of Quality Dog Grooming set up a Shelbi-Rae Ramsey fundraising day May 29, and all of the proceeds from that day will go to Shelbi’s pageant ef-forts.

“As far as preparing, she’ll just have to polish up her song that she’s going to be doing and prac-tice her walk,” said Cindy.

Her platform for the pageant is about teen drug and alcohol abuse. She would like to promote non-alcohol, non-drug parties to help teens realize they can have fun and not be under the influ-ence

Her slogan is, ‘say nope to dope.’

Shelbi can also be seen at Strathmore’s first pet expo com-ing up on April 30. To help Shel-bi with sponsorship towards her expenses or by donating to the charities above, she can be fol-lowed and contacted on Face-book at Shelbi Ramsay - Miss Teen Wheatland County,by e-mail [email protected], or by calling (403) 901-2409.

Chamber of commerce welcomes new board members at AGMShannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

The Strathmore and District Cham-ber of Commerce held its Annual General Meeting at the Travelodge on March 21. The meeting began with dinner, followed by speeches about how the Chamber has done over the past year, and a few things they plan to continue to promote over this next year.

“It went really well. We probably had about 35 to 40 in attendance, so considering the weather and that sort of thing it was probably about what we expected,” said Lin Walker, presi-dent of the Chamber.

“What we are the most proud of, as far as what the Chamber accomplished last year, is we increased our member-ship by 40 per cent, and we bettered our financial situation.”

Walker said part of that is because they have had phenomenal represen-tation over the past year. The Cham-ber also introduced five new board members: Steve Jefferies, publisher of the Chestermere Anchor and his wife Barb, owner of Pier Communications: Rick Risdale from Golden West Radio; Debbie Wakelam, owner of Meadow-lark Care Homes; and Doug Sholter with the Days Inn.

“We are very well represented in the communications field,” said Walker.

She said they are looking forward to the added talent on the board, and the new ideas from new people. Walker said she thinkd the Jefferies’ formed the Chestermere Chamber of Commerce, when there was one. The new board will get together and have a one-day workshop and formulate a plan as to what is in store this year. Walker said what they have learned is they have an enthusiastic board full of ideas. She also said every single per-son on the board is a business person. They want to make sure they have a strategic plan in place so that no mat-ter how carried away they may get with their other ideas, they make sure they focus on their mission, which is advocacy and education. They plan to still keep bringing in top notch edu-cators and speakers and will continue promoting the Shop Local program.

“Whatever we do, we’ll be keeping our members in mind and will this benefit our members and their busi-nesses,” said Walker.

Lyndsay Goebel, winner of the 2010 Strathmore’s Got Talent was one of the entertainers of the night. The next big event on the agenda for the Chamber is SpringFest, which is scheduled for June 4.

Every November the Lions Club holds their In-ternational Peace Poster contest in local schools. The contest is to encourage kids worldwide to ex-press their vision of peace in an artistic way.

“So they go ahead, they draw a picture within the guidelines and they submit their artwork and all of the students do this,” said Wendy Gerbrandt with the Strathmore Lions.

“Then the teachers out of each school pick a first and a second place entry. Then the first place entry from each school moves on further into the competition.”

The students who take part must be between the ages of 11 and 13. No words were allowed to be used on the poster, nothing could be at-tached to the artwork in anyway and it had to be no smaller than 13” by 20”.

Twelve-year-old Charly Muenchrath, a Wheat-land Elementary school student, won at the school level and was lucky enough to continue on in the contest to the district level where she won second place. There is an opportunity to move up to the International Lions competition, which unfortu-nately Muenchrath was not selected to participate in. There are 52 clubs in this district. This year’s theme was Vision of Peace. Next year’s theme will be Children Know Peace.

“I just thought the conflict between war and peace was breaking the world apart,” said Muen-chrath about the poster she had designed.

Muenchrath’s poster will be displayed at the Li-ons Auction in April.

“I’m going to have a wall up there of all the stu-dents who participated in Strathmore,” said Ger-brandt.

She will be talking to all of the schools again in September to see who all will be taking part in next year’s competition.

At 1:40 a.m. on March 22 a fire raged through a home at the corner of Briarwood Road and Briarwood Crescent in Strathmore. Four neighbouring homes were evacuated for the safety of the occupants due to the severity of the fire and wind direction. The occupants of the residence where the fire started were not home at the time. A second residence next to the first, was dam-aged by the fire.

The final concert for the Drumheller Festival, a part of the Alberta Music Festival Association, took place on March 18. Members of both the Strathmore Children’s Choir and Brentwood El-ementary School’s choir were at the final concert.

“We are thrilled with the results of the festival this year, and look forward to working (towards) provincials in May,” said Loralee Laycock, Choir Conductor for the Strathmore Children’s Choir.

The Children’s choir was given the TE Keele award for the highest mark in school choruses grade 2 and 3. They also tied with Brentwood for the United Farmers Award of Excellence for excel-lence in choirs and the WR Dean Memorial Tro-phy and McDonalds Scholarship for the highest mark in school chorus.

Brentwood School was awarded four school choir awards after the final concert. Metaya An-derson, a member of the senior choir, accepted the awards for Brentwood School.

1. United Farmers of Alberta Award of Excel-lence. This scholarship was awarded to the Brent-wood School Choir Program for excellence in choirs.

2. W.R. Dean Memorial Trophy and McDonald’s Restaurant Scholarship. This was awarded to the Brentwood School Senior Choir for highest mark awarded to a school chorus groups.

3. G. Fred Anderson Memorial Plaque. This was awarded to the Brentwood School Senior Choir for highest mark in School Choruses Grades 4-6.

4. The Brentwood School Senior Choir was nominated to continue on to Provincial Festival

and to represent the Drumheller Music Festival at the Alberta Music Festival’s Provincial Choral Fi-nals in Edmonton May 5-7th.

Susanne Sevick was honoured to have been asked to play “March of the Goblins” composed by Boris Berlin, in the final concert of the Drumhell-er Festival. Sevick was awarded the Vera Marchuk Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded for the highest mark in piano solos for kids aged six to 12. She also was awarded the Marilyn Martin Ol-hauser Memorial Trophy and Nacmine Commu-nity Association Scholarship. This is awarded to the adjudicator’s choice for the most promising pianist. Lane Anderson was awarded the Knights of Columbus Trophy and Scholarship for receiv-ing the highest mark in piano classes for students aged 13-16.

strathmore men’s bonspiel 2011

Shannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

The Town of Strathmore has been reviewing its long-term infrastructure plan, which brought forth a need to review possible east/west connector roads. One of the potential alignments could cut through the wetlands.

Jesse Parker, Director of Engineering and Operations for the Town, said there cur-rently aren’t any plans for a road through the wetlands. He said it would be develop-ment that will drive the ne-cessity of an east/west road. Administration is trying to think about the potential of future development in the area. By making it a policy then the Town could say to a developer they would pre-fer the structure placed else-where, because there is the potential for the road. Ad-ministration doesn’t know what the actual studies are going to be. That’s why they would like to have it as ba-sically a policy. The rec-ommendation from admin-istration is that there is no future development to en-sure there are no barriers for the possible alignment. The only exemptions are: exist-ing works by the developer of WestCreek for the expan-sion of the Public Utility, Municipal and Environmen-

tal Reserve on the east side of highway 817. Improve-ments, made by the Town to Pond 1 and the pathway system in the area, and the WID’s improvements to their works in the area.

Councillor Bob Sobol made a motion to accept the policy to protect the area so the town can conduct future studies as to whether it is a suitable area for an east/west connector road. Coun-cillor Earl Best was the only one opposed to the motion.

Letter of support for JapanCouncillor Bob Sobol dis-

cussed Japan and the fact they are in need of assis-tance. Sobol said he encour-ages Strathmore residents to consider supporting Ja-pan in their time of need. He said he also cautions people to make sure the relief fund they decide to use is well established and legitimate. Strathmore has been working with Japan since 2004 for their student exchange programs. Sobol made a recommendation for the Mayor to sign a letter of support on behalf of council and the residents of Strath-more expressing sorrow for them during the time of cri-sis and reassuring them our thoughts and prayers are with them. The motion was passed.

During the bonspiel we had a raffle open to all competitors and fans for a Tay-lorMade R11 driver, the newest and hottest golf club out there today. Ashlee Solutions and Big K Welding proudly donated the driver. The response for the raffle draw was absolutely outstanding and we were able to provide these 4 young curlers with $400. These young guys are the Bantam team that will be proudly representing the Strathmore Curling Club this weekend in Taber at the Southern Alberta Curling Association playdowns. These funds will be used to help cover some of the costs for the boys’ meals, accommodations, transpor-tation and maybe the odd chocolate bar! At the Strathmore Curling Club we are very proud of our junior curlers, as they are the future of our club. The Men’s Bonspiel Committee along with Brent and Kelly were honored to help them out. Best of luck boys! Darcy Ledene, Men’s Bonspiel Chairperson (l), Nicky Burton, Coach, Scott Thurtson, Skip, Sterling Klem, Third, Cole Burton, Second, Jesse Leuher, Lead, Addy Ashlee, representing Brent Ashlee of Ashlee Solutions, Kelly Reiss, owner of Big K Welding.

Ice off to provincialsMario PrusinaTimes Editor

Two fierce ringette rivals are off to the U19 B Belle Provincial Champion-ship this weekend in Fort McMurray.

The Zone Champion Strathmore Ice and the Rockyford Ringers, the high-est ranked zone team during the regu-lar season, are in separate pools at the Provincial Championship March 25-27.

The Ice earned a berth in the tourna-ment by winning the zone title, while the Ringers gained entry as a Wild Card.

“It’s a tough test (at) provincials,” said Ice head coach Darin Dunlop. “It always seems like the northern teams are always pretty strong. We played a couple of them in tournaments this year and they’ll be a test. I was looking at our pool – we have a real good shot to make it to the finals on Sunday.

“We just have to keep our heads – we can’t get away from our game plan. On the defensive side, we need to play good body position – don’t be chasing rings and getting beat one-on-one. We need to be patient.”

Both the Ice and the Ringers compet-ed in the Ringette Calgary League dur-ing the regular season. However, those two teams, along with Cochrane, break off and compete for the Zone Champi-onship.

The Ringers were the highest ranked zone team and earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs, while the second-ranked Strathmore Ice took on third-ranked Cochrane Rockies.

Strathmore earned a 12-10 win in Game 1 of the series, before a tough 10-9 loss on the road in Game 2. In the third and deciding game, Strathmore used their home ice advantage to post a 10-4 victory and a berth in the final.

The Ice traveled to Rockyford for Game 1 of the Zone Championship Series. Despite falling 3-0 early in the game, the Ice showed tremendous character and came back to win 8-7.

In Game 2 on home ice, Strathmore burst out to a 4-1 lead, en route to a 7-4 win to claim the Zone Championship.

“We started off the first game pretty slow, but (we) called a quick timeout and the girls got going again,” said Dunlop. “Then back at Strathmore we played a full 40 minutes of real good ringette and won 7-4.

“There has been an ongoing rivalry with Rockyford (for years),” said Dun-lop. “It always seems like it’s us and Rockyford in the finals – so it makes it a little sweeter.”

According to Dunlop, the defence – consisting of Heather Potter, Kirsten Dunlop, Rebecca Dunlop and Shayna Dunbar (affiliate for injured Caitlyn Woodcock) – were always composed and steady. If they did falter, goalie Brianna Kemble always stood up and elevated her game.

The forwards baffled Rockyford with their quick transition game and timely passing. Madisen Morris, Willow Pax-ton, Liz Steele, Caitlin Thomas, Bobi Edelemann, Nicole Laursen and Car-men McMurray all played well.

However, despite defeating Rocky-ford in the Zone Championship, the Ice would love to play the Ringers again this season. For that to happen, both teams would have to make the playoffs at the Provincial Championship.

“A lot of the girls (on both teams) go to school with each other, so it can get intense on the ice sometimes,” offered Dunlop. “For the most part, there are a lot of good friendships after.”

And a lot of bragging rights.

Gleichen honours their past and present during skate carnivalManny EvErEttTimes Contributor

“That was then … this is now”, was the theme of Gleichen Skate Club’s Ice Carnival held this past Saturday.

The theme meant more than just music from past and present, as the Arena and Curling Club underwent over $600,000 in major upgrades and improvements including new boards, glass, walkways, concrete and also some outside improvements.

The stands were full for the carnival, which kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony sponsored by Encana. Com-munity members were recognized for their contributions of volunteer time, money and support to make the Club something to be proud of.

President Cindy Bolinger said, “It (the

club) got started late due to the reno-vations but the short season has been great, the kids are enthusiastic and we are looking forward to an amazing 2011-2012 season.”

The skaters put on an amazing per-formance with the routines and dances they had prepared with their coach, Carrie Lassiter from Bassano. Lassiter has coached at Gleichen for just over eleven years and is very proud of how far her students have come this season. Both the Juniors and Seniors performed solos during the evening.

After weeks of practice with their particular groups, Program Assistants Stephanie Bolinger, Kayla Pietrobono, Taylor Lassiter, Rebekah Schalin, Taylor and Korrie Stewart, Jourdyn Sammons and Sierra Many Heads led their skaters on the ice through the routines.

The Strathmore Ice claimed the U19 B Belle Zone Championship March 19 at the Strathmore Family Centre. The Ice defeated Rockyford two games to none.

Funspiel brings families together in HussarManny EvErEttTimes Contributor

“Hurry hard and sweep,” echoed from the Hussar Curling Club during their Funspiel last Saturday.

The family-fun event was organized by the curling club and sponsored by the Chinook Credit Union from Hussar to spark interest in the game for members of the younger generation from the area.

Eight teams, all from Hus-sar, participated with most consisting of two adults and two kids.

The Funspiel was a great way for members of the community to connect and enjoy playing a great game of curling.

The format allowed for many teaching moments along the way. The games were cut to only four ends as opposed to the regular

10 ends, to keep the kids’ focus and attention span.

The kids involved prac-ticed various methods of throwing the rocks, some of which were humorous to say the least. In this day and age, with importance stressed on exercise and healthy living, this event was a great opportunity for young and old alike.

The Funspiel was just one of several events for the curling club this year.

Hussar Curling Club president Lisa Armstrong said the club “had a great season and actually had three main teams: a Ladies square draw that met in the afternoons, a mixed square draw and a Men’s traveling team.”

This season they hosted a Ladies Bonspiel, a Men’s Bonspiel and will be host-ing a Mixed Bonspiel on March 26-April 2.

Adults looking to swim competitively, or just to brush up on their swimming skills, will now have the opportunity thanks to a new program in the Strath-more Silversharks swim club. The Mas-ters program began at the beginning of March, and is for people 18-years-old and up.

“The Masters Club, because it’s Tues-day, Thursday mornings it gives those swimmers who are wanting to be more competitive the option of coming dur-ing those times,” said Jennifer Mertz, assistant head coach for the Strathmore Silversharks.

“It’s the older swimmers that we’re targeting, who would be able to swim with the adults and just get more train-ing in.”

The Strathmore Silversharks swim club has been around for just over five years.

“One of the parents…her daughter wanted to start the swim club so they asked a friend to start it,” said Venita Schoepp, club manager.

“He volunteered his time, and now we’re here. It had like 12 (members) in the beginning and now we have 77, with a waiting list.”

Schoepp said usually they add new members into the club in January. The kids are taught breathing techniques, all of the different strokes, turns and dives.

“Sometimes to make it different they

do water polo and synchronized swim-ming... just to change it up, but... they do a lot of laps,” said Schoepp.

The Masters club isn’t the only new thing the swim club has introduced this year. Previously, parents of the club have coached the swimmers, and the head coach also has children in the club, which Mertz said has been work-ing really well.

“We’ve introduced some junior coaches to our club…but we’ve intro-duced a junior coaching program this year just as a trial basis to see how it’s working and it’s going great,” said Mertz.

The junior coaches are about 14-years–old. Mertz also said the club is becoming more of a competitive club every year. They still do recreational swimming, but every year the club is in existence they have more kids becom-ing interested in the competitive side of things. They do attend swim meets, and have a junior meet about every five weeks and senior meet about once a month. The junior meet is for new swimmers. The judges are a little bit easier on the swimmers if they make mistakes, and there are fewer disquali-fications than there may be at a senior meet.

The Silversharks swim Monday and Wednesday nights from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Competitive swimmers can also swim at the same times on Friday nights. The Masters club swims on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 5:45 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Members of the Strathmore Silversharks swim club practiced a variety of different swimming and div-ing techniques on March 16.

it was a very successful year for the Strathmore Black ice Jr. “B” Ringette team. Not only did they remain undefeated in their regular season, but won two Silver Medals - one at the Brooks tournament and the other at the Lonnie Krahn tourney. Although Black ice didn’t medal at the Provincials, they played a tremendous game against Ft. McMurray Rush, the Provincial Champions, coming back from five points behind in the first period, scoring a whopping nine points in the second period, and forc-ing the game into overtime where unfortunately Rush slipped in the winning goal. The girls grew as a team and wish to thank the parents and coaches for all their hard work. Members of the Black ice are Stephanie Meyer, Jenna Gigantelli, Bridgit Dettling, Madison Gillies, Jose’ Hansen (Beattie), Hannah Manyguns, Sarah McKinnon, Courtney edwards, Micah Dettling, Mariah Wilson, Shayna Dunbar, Karli vanGunst, Dakota Cole, Keely Ross and Raegan Graff.

Gold medal desireAshley RodmAnBantam Storm Report

As my previous article last week stated, the Strathmore Storm bantam T5 team have tons of heart and a great amount of team spirit. And over the weekend the team prevailed again! At their most recent tournaments this past weekend, the boys walked away with three wins, one tie and no losses. But, yet again, it’s not in the stats – it’s all in the heart these kids show every time they practice or play the game.

After a disappointing loss to Brooks on Thursday of last week, they walked away from that game with heavy hearts, but they also walked into the tournament with the desire to win. Not just the desire, but the passion it took to walk away with a champion-ship. Their first game Friday night was against Crowfoot from NW Calgary and that evening the boys walked away with the momentum for the rest of the weekend.

On Saturday it was an up early morning for the boys and the hockey parents. Those commercials with the early hockey mornings I’m sure were how the parents felt. The team that day had two games a morning game and an evening game. Their first game

that day was against Bow River from SE Calgary in which another win was captured. After some lunch and a break they played Mindapore whom they had played n the beginning of their season in Brooks and at that time they lossed, but this time heart prevailed once again and they walked away with a tie.

Sunday was the final two games of the tournament where the first place team would play the second place team. And the third place team would play the fourth place team. That morn-ing the boys were first and, they played Mindapore and it was a no score game till half way through the third when the boys really came alive and walked away with the gold. “Ben Sorensen had an amazing game in the final, leading his team to the 3-0 win.” Says Mike Lan-gen coach for the Strathmore Storm.

Not only were the boys awarded with a gold medal, but members of the team were awarded with the Heart and Hus-tle award. The first game it was Bray-don Murphy. The second game it was Logan Weir, the following game was Tyis Yellowhorn and on the last game it was Ryder Quenelle. Congratulations to all of them. Also a huge kudos to all the parents who supported them through losses and wins. Great season boys and good luck next year.

Hockey spirit is alive and well in our rural communities as the Rockyford Ponies Bantam Hockey team hosted a tournament on the weekend at the Rockyford Sport-splex. Chiefs strike first in Championship SeriesmARio PRusinATimes Editor

The Wheatland Chiefs are one step closer to claiming the South Central Alberta Hockey League Midget Cham-pionship.

After sweeping the Red Deer ProS-titch two games to none, the Chiefs de-feated the Foothills Bisons 4-2 in Game 1 of their championship series March 22 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Since losing their first playoff game, the Chiefs have won five straight, in-cluding the pivotal opening game of the best-of-five championship series.

“It feels good to get the first one out of the way and get a win,” said head coach Devon Olson after the contest. “We played good tonight – it was a whole team effort. We rolled all four lines again tonight, which is nice. We can wear teams down like that, espe-cially when we get the lead. They’re sending their top guys out every sec-

ond shift, wearing them down. So if we can run four lines, that’s a huge ben-efit.”

The Bisons struck first, before Rylan Muenchrath tied the game late in the first period. Just 10 seconds into the second period, the Bisons regained the lead, before the Chiefs scored two quick goals – one from Jordan Jarvis and another from Justin Fraser – to take a one goal lead into the third period.

The Chiefs dominated the final peri-od, especially the last half of the frame and iced the game with a goal from Cody Burndred.

“They move the puck fast, so we have to be on them quick and take the body,” said Muenchrath, who lead the offensive barrage with a goal and an assist. “We’re a physical team, we get a lot of shots – we have four lines and really good depth.”

The Chiefs will have a chance to kick back and relax for a week, as the series will not resume until March 29 (7 p.m.)

at the Strathmore Family Centre. Imme-diately following that game, the series shifts to Vulcan for next two games on March 30 and March 31. Three games in three nights would be tough on any team, but it will be even more difficult for Foothills.

The Bisons will take part in the Pro-vincial Championship Tournament this coming weekend, playing up to six po-

tential games. The Chiefs are optimistic that they

can use the rest and try and take ad-vantage of a tired Bisons squad.

“Actually, a week (off) right now is not a bad thing,” said Olson. “It seems right now, every practice or every game we have someone sick.”

Which makes the time off even more valuable.

Over the last week we have seen the damage from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Many wonder how they can help and consider donat-ing to charity. Unfortunately, any disaster presents an opportunity for Scammers. Within hours of a disaster criminals cre-ate fake charity web sites and “phishing” e-mails/spam in an attempt to defraud unsuspecting good Samaritans.

The best way to avoid being scammed is to donate money to reputable hu-manitarian organizations with a history of providing assistance in disasters and other crisis situations. Attempt to verify the legitimacy of nonprofit organizations by checking their status with www.bbb.org/canada/charity/.

Other tips to avoid being defrauded in a charity scam include:

• Do not respond to unsolicited e-mail. • Do no click on links in unsolicited

e-mail.• Go directly to the recognized chari-

table organization’s website rather than following a link from an e-mail or an-other site. Ask for credentials, including the soliciting entity’s exact name and telephone number.

• Be skeptical of individuals claim-ing to be surviving victims or foreign government officials asking for help in placing large sums of money in overseas bank accounts.

• Be leery of e-mails that claim to show pictures of the disaster areas in attached files, as the files may contain viruses. Only open attachments from known senders that you trust.

• Avoid cash donations and never agree to give money to a courier. Write a check to the charity directly, not the soliciting individual and always get a re-ceipt.

• Be wary of claims that 100% of do-nations assist victims.

• Find out how the donation will be used.

• Never give a credit card or bank ac-count number to an unknown solicitor.
