While we are working incredibly hard to support your children and ensure that we provide a high level of hygiene to minimise the risk, we are also, in the background working on our remote learning program. As communicated today the NSW Premier announced that while schools will remain open at this stage, she is encouraging students to be kept at home if they can. We will be moving to remote learning and more information will come out to support you. In the meantime, make sure your child has a workspace to work at home, that you have pencils, board games and any items that could be helpful with staying home. Teachers and support staff have been meeting many times through the weeks to plan, create and organise how learning will continue in a remote environment. Remote learning is not the same as coming to school so we are working out how we still provide the connection to students, so they don’t feel socially isolated. Many students are worried about what is happening in the world and our pastoral care team are meeting with students, reassuring them and discussing strategies that they use to reduce the anxiety. The way we live has changed and we are all faced with many things that are quite unsettling. While the changes to our lifestyles are a necessity it is still important to try, where possible to provide some normality and calm. Some things that you can do: - Discuss the things you can do when at home (board games, having book, materials to make and do things, ingredients to cook with, music for relaxation. - Limit the amount of information your children are exposed to from the news, social media and YouTube. Children struggle to know what is real and what is fake news. - Remember to still get outside in the garden – there are plenty of learning opportunities in the garden to write about, explore, discover and research. We will be in contact with you in due course to explain how your child will access information, resources and online materials. Children have been weeding, planting and harvesting in the garden. Our vegetables are in abundance, our flowers are in bloom and our animals are all very happy with the milder conditions. Exploring the Lighthouse Garden presents us with many opportunities to be confidant and involved learners. Our curiosity, cooperation, problem solving and adaptation of knowledge are all ex- tended as we connect with people and places in the natural world (EYLF 4). Water play, digging and pretend play have been explored - with us wearing our gumboots we can get in the water and mud to explore and learn respect for the environment (EYLF 2). Meet Poppy, Coco and Snowy One of the many advantages of a Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 College, is the interaction between the primary school and the high school. These lucky girls in Year 3M, are the class pet owners of 2 day old baby ducklings from Ag. Meet Poppy, Coco & Snowy The girls will be responsible for feeding and caring for them. Message from the Principal

Dear Parents,

I hope you are all holding up ok – 2020 has certainly been a challeng-ing year with the fires and now the COVID-19 situation. weight, growth, behaviours and appearances.Thank you to Mrs Worthy from the high school Ag class & good luck Miss M and class.We can’t wait to see how much they grow and what you learn over the next 3 weeks.

Dogs speak French too!By Madame Jean Winterflood

In a collaborative effort, Vicki, trainer of Banjo, one of our school dogs, has been training Enora, our French Assistante, to train Belle, using French words and phrases. Belle, who accompanies Madame Winterflood at SCAC one day a week, is a quick learner and now understands and follows French commands! Enora, in turn, is teaching our stu-

dents to use these French commands in the classroom with Belle, le chien! (Belle the dog)The students have really enjoyed asking Belle to: “Assis! “(sit), “Couché” (lie down), “À ta place!” (go to your mat), “Cherche!” (search), “Parle!” (speak) and “Mets tes jouets dans la boîte!” (put your toys in the basket).Belle has loved following these commands and interacting with the stu-dents, receiving doggie treats students are given to reward her with and being praised by the students with “Très bien, Belle!” and “Bon chien!”Pierre, the French dog puppet has also been visiting Junior school French classes and particularly enjoys playing “Cherche Pierre!” (find Pierre), a game of Cache-cache (hide and seek) loved by our younger students, who take turns hiding and looking for Pierre.

for our breakfast club, which was soon established after the recent bush-fires.We were delighted to have Mount Annan Christian College visit us last week with a large cheque to the value of $3000! We are so very thankful for the wonderful efforts by Mount Annan Christian College.

Junior School PEBy Mrs Lisa Louie

During the past few weeks in PE Pre-Kinder to year 4 have been focusing on their ball skills, espe-cially with the new bright coloured balls we have. The photos show Pre-Kinder and year 2 using the new balls to practise their skills.The main skills we have been prac-ticing include throwing and catch-ing (with chest passes and bounce passes) and pat bouncing (dribbling as in basketball). These skills form the basis of many team sports.

I have asked the students to continue practising these ball skills plus our gross locomotor activities (hopping, skipping and hopscotch) at home. Year 3-6 have enjoyed learning the game Ultimate Frisbee. Some say this game is similar to netball but played on a large field with no posi-tions. The challenge is the ball is replaced with a frisbee. The students have really enjoyed this new game.

The future looks bright for BenMedia Release from Bega Valley Shire CouncilCouncil welcomed its newest staff member this week, with student Ben Cook of Sapphire Coast Anglican College joining Council’s Library team on its first school-based traineeship.Ben will complete a Certification 3 in Library and Information Studies while completing his HSC, requiring him to complete 700 hours of paid work.

Ben himself couldn’t be happier. When asked what he loves most about the Library, ‘books’ wasn’t the only answer.“I love the routine of what I do in the Library; I know exactly what to do when I am working,” says Ben.Ben said he has had a passion for books from a very young age; science fiction being his current genre of choice.The stars aligned for Ben when Council offered him the traineeship after he had proven himself during a six-month work experience stint.Sapphire Coast Anglican College Principal, Tracey Gray said Ben’s ex-perience, both work experience placement and the school-based train-eeship, are a result of a whole-of-community approach to preparing students for life after school, with education, on the job training and qualifications. “It takes a village to raise a child, and Ben is that child,” Ms Gray said.“Seeing his confidence today, it’s evident that whole-of-community partnerships are so valuable.

“Opportunities like this traineeship demonstrates that there are so many pathways for young people these days and that’s exciting.“We are really proud of Ben, the journey he’s been on and the growth we’ve seen”.Bega Valley Shire Council General Manager, Leanne Martin said the Library team are looking forward to helping Ben thrive and support his professional development under the program.“Traineeships, cadetships, apprenticeships and work experience are all great opportunities for Council to invest in local people and help pave the way for successful careers in the local government sector,” Ms Mar-tin said.“Ben certainly proved himself while doing work experience and we’re keen to watch him grow and develop professionally.”Once he has completed his studies and gained certification, Ben plans to try and get a permanent role at the Library.Council offers traineeships or apprenticeships opportunities throughout the year on a need’s basis, matching the organisation’s operational re-quirements across its broad range of services.

Sustaining our FutureBy Mrs Mel Wood

Year 7 have been investigating ‘Sustainable Future’ in Mandatory Tech-nology through Food/Ag. Their task was to create a self watering planter using recyclable materials. They have investigated micro greens and the nutritional benefits these micro plants bring. They each chose the seeds they wanted to grow, they made their planters from 1.25ml plastic bot-tles, nurtured their plants and once germination occurred, they didn’t need to water them as the roots found their way to the water via a string bringing water up from the bottom to where it was needed. They are going to use their micro greens on their homemade pizzas as part of their assessments. Good work green thumbs, we’ve learnt that we can all grow something to add to our every day diet

SASSA SwimmingBy Mr Phil ChapmanA team of swimmers from year 3-8 travelled to Nowra to compete in the SASSA Swimming Carnival. Though the rain poured down the spirits of our students were not dampened. Our team cheered for one another, encouraged each other and showed amazing sportsmanship. Congratula-tions to all the participants who represented our school.

SASSA NetballThree SCAC netball teams consisting of the primary girls, year 7’s & opens-year 10’s had an early start this morning, travelling to Broulee today. They played many games, showing great sportsmanship, positive attitudes and had lots of fun.Well done girls!Congratulations to Alisi Arbon who was selected for the AICES team.A big thank you to Mr Chapman, Mrs Alexander, Mrs Wood & Mrs Mil-liss for your support, coaching & helping with the event.

Staying Connected With Our Children…

Here are some ways that parents and carers can

share connection, comfort and care with

their children right now.

Be Honest “COVID 19 is a sickness like a cold. Some people will get it.

Maybe someone in our family might get sick. We are all a little bit scared. Being scared is a sign that

we are concentrating on being safe. There are really good

people like doctors who know what to do. They are helping to

figure it out.”

Validate Their Feelings“I know I might look worried

sometimes. Mums or dads get worried too, just like children. I

know it can make you feel scared. But I am ok.”

“It is ok to be feeling scared, or worried, or whatever you are

feeling right now. You can share that with me whenever

you need to.”

Acknowledge Day to Day Disruptions

“Even if school and your after school activities stop for a

while, they will start up again. How about we think about

some ways of doing versions of these things together at

home if we need to?”
