The expectation of warmer weather is also in the air, indicated by the arrival of a new resident in the front garden tree - a very healthy possum that appreciates the great work done by P&C members during the vacation. The garden at the front of the school has been spruced up and new trees are being planted. Students will appreciate further work to be done in future working bees. The school is proud of students who represented themselves and the community in different settings during the recent school vacation - students led be Denise Perry, Sharon George and David Britton travelled to Cambodia and Vietnam and helped at least one family in improving wheelchair access for a child. Other students, led by Mark Hopkins, Lance Hartley and Gerry Sheehan (Eden Marine High School) travelled to Holbrook and achieved fourth place in a Rural Fire Service challenge. We have another group of students currently touring western NSW towns as part of the Sapphire Coast Learning Community of Public Schools. They are talented band members joining with students of all ages to showcase their music and engage with other students from the bush. Well done to the students and Anna Martin, producer and roady. Parents and students who want to get information electronically can access assessment dates, details and school activities on the Sentra portal. Hi there everyone.

In Term 1 our class signed up for a competition with Colgate. All year we have been collecting oral care waste; old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, dental floss containers and all packaging. So far we have earned 2206 points. This puts our school in 150th place out of 371 entrants nationwide.

The competition ends on October 31st. We would like to increase our points as much as possible to improve our chances of winning one of the prize packages - a recycled plastic garden bed and furniture set!

Please keep your oral care waste coming in to school until next Thursday, October 25th. There is a collection point in the office and in a couple of staff rooms.

You can also vote for us online to increase our points at terracycle.com.au/colgategardenvoting

Thank you for your contributions so far!

Year 12 Earth and Environmental Science Excursion to Picnic Point Most of the world's population can't see the Milky Way at night.

One third of the world's population can't get enough fresh water.

We on the South Coast, live in a totally amazing environment of stunning beauty, natural landscapes and high biodiversity.

The Year 12 Earth and Environmental Science experienced a small slice of this environment when we visited Picnic Point which is in Mimosa Rocks National Park north of Tathra.

About 360 million years ago, Picnic Point was part of a volcanic hotspot which rivalled Yellowstone. Volcanoes erupted in lakes with pyroclastic (rocks and hot ash) clouds and lava flowed in and around mudstone. We checked to see the remaining features of these eruptions.

We also examined an ancient fish fossil from around this time, when armoured fish ruled the seas, but the land was virtually empty of life.

Aragunnu, just to the north of Picnic Point, is also full of signs of ancient volcanic activity.

Drop the screen and check it out one weekend!

Yours in Science Vincent Weafer

Small in Numbers but HUGE in IMPACT! The September/October holidays saw the 10th overseas study tour to South East Asia, particularly Cambodia and Vietnam take place.

Eight Year 10 students, Mia Boyce, Stephanie Burke, Molly Carr, Holly Christison, Brydie Condran Christabella Herbert-Smith, Jorja Moore and Meabh Perry-Britton, accompanied by David Britton, Sharon George, Kelley Gould and Denise Perry flew out of Sydney on Saturday 29th September.

The group had raised $20,000 to distribute to a variety of projects whilst there. An action packed two weeks followed: building houses, sightseeing, visiting schools, dancing up a storm, eating and so much more.

We would like to thank everyone for the support they showed this group and over the coming term each student will share their experiences via a short report in the coming newsletters. On a personal note, I would like to congratulate the girls on their engagement and behaviour and to thank their parents for trusting us to provide the girls with this life changing experience. Bega High School Rural Fire Service Cadet Program Bega High school students completed the Rural Fire Service Cadet Program (ten Weeks) with eighteen students at the end of last term.

They all graduated with flying colours on Wednesday, 26 September in front of the local area manager Mr John Cullen.

Lance Hartley, Phil Banks and Mark Hopkins guided the cadets through the program on Wednesday afternoons.

Eight of these recently trained Rural Fire Service Cadets travelled to Holbrook NSW during the school holidays to compete in a regional championship against cadets from other schools in a series of ten events.

The cadets surpassed all expectations with event marshals surprised that they had only just completed ten weeks training at school, commenting that they were at state championship skill level.

The Local Community is seeking YOUR Help

With significant support from Heritage Near Me, part of the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, a major community project is underway in the Bega Valley Shire area to identify 101 ‘local treasures’ that epitomize the history and heritage of the area.

These may be well-known features such as Tathra Wharf or Mumbulla Mountain, these may be something as simple as a fishing pole that survives from earlier tuna-fishing days or an event that has significantly impacted on the history of the area.

We are particularly seeking information about little-known, ‘hidden’ treasures so that our community will have a better understanding about the most significant surviving objects, places, events that have local heritage significance.

We ask YOU to help – simply by emailing your suggestions about the ‘local treasures’ that best illustrate our local history and heritage to [email protected].

There are many, many important historically-important ‘treasures’ scattered throughout the Shire. Our aim is to identify them (so they do not become ‘lost’ through unintentionally being overlooked) and to assemble information about as many of them as possible.

Your suggestions will be carefully considered in the compiling of this list of 101 Bega Shire significant treasures.

In advance, we and the Bega Shire community THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE.

(Further information about this project is available by phoning South Coast History Society on 0448 160 852.)
