Morinville filmmaker produces documentary on Zappacostaby Stephen [email protected]

Canadian pop and rock singer Alfie Zappacosta rose to fame as the face of Zappacosta, but after peeking with his song Overload appearing on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack in 1987, his relationship with his career came to a breaking point.

That story and Zappacosta’s subsequent decision to stay out of the limelight, redefining himself as a musician and father are part of the journey audiences will take when Long Road Home premiers at Northwestfest (formerly Global Visions) in Edmonton in May.

The documentary is co-written and produced by 22-year-old Morinville resident Braden Rooke and came about when he was a NAIT student taking the Digital Media and IT program. Rooke said his instructor came to him with the idea for the film when he was in his final semester in December of 2014.

“It ended up going further than school because I graduated in April and we are just finishing it now,” Rooke said of the project.

The film chronicles the Canadian singer’s life via segments of a two-night concert booking Zappacosta did at Festival Place in February 2015.

“My class filmed it with ten cameras and 16 students. I produced it and edited it as well,” Rooke said. “We filmed documentary portions as well as interviews with him. We go through Alfie’s four-decade long career in the music industry, starting right from the beginning when he moved to Canada from Italy when he was six months old.”

The film covers Zappacosta’s early life in Toronto, the early days of his career with Surrender, and his life as the lead man in Zappacosta.

“This is where he started getting into that rock and roll lifestyle of the ‘80s — the drinking, the drugs, all that fun stuff, living the rock star lifestyle while still trying to maintain a family,” Rooke said, adding Zappacosta’s career took a turn after the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. “That kind of pushes him over the edge to say — ‘Now I can get out of this.’ He never really wanted to be a rock star. His dad was the minstrel type, and that’s what Alfie wanted to be. So when Dirty Dancing hit, he started getting jobs in theatre and moved to Edmonton to reinvent himself. Now he’s singing the songs that he wants to sing.”

Long future roadLong Road Home marks Rooke’s first feature-

length documentary. He previously made a short drama film in his third semester at NAIT and is currently working on a documentary about Spider-Mabel with his current employer Leven Creative.

“It’s what I’ve decided to get into after the fact now,” Rooke says of his long future road. “I was in MCTV, and it was there that I got the passion. Not so much for filmmaking there. I got that idea when I was at NAIT. I was originally thinking radio television.”

Morinville Community High School teacher Greg Boutestein had kind words about Rooke’s time with MCTV.

“He did some very good work at MCTV, and always took the initiative,” Boutestein said. “I remember very distinctively he did a documentary piece on the St. Jean Baptiste Festival. He had a story teller’s vision early on, and took on projects that were more than your one-and-a-half minute news reports.”

The experience with Long Road Home has pushed Rooke further on the path to focusing on film editing and producing. He is hoping to produce his own documentary one day.

Morinville Lions Club looking for their next Citizen of the Year

Nominations are open for the Morinville Lions Club’s Citizen of the Year Award. Residents have until Apr. 2 to nominate their candidate for the honour.

It’s a tradition started by the Morinville Lions Club in the late 1960s and continues 48 years later with the service club’s desire to shine a spotlight on those who give of their time and talent to their community.

The Lions wanted to recognize people in the community who had gone above and beyond as volunteers. Originally run in conjunction with Morinville’s Frontier Days, the annual award eventually became a Lions Club component of the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Night, which takes place Apr. 15 this year.

Though the venue has changed, the motivation behind the award has not. The Lions are still looking for that resident with special qualifications.

“The Lions Club feels it is extremely important to honour an outstanding person, couple or family that has made a significant contribution to our community,” said Morinville Lions Club Vice President Deborah Robillard. “We recognize these individuals and need them to know that they are not going unnoticed, that they should be celebrated for their unselfish acts, and that because of them, they have helped to change and improve someone’s life.”

The recognition is open to any individual, couple or family who has made a significant contribution to the community.

Robillard said the ideal candidate, often unsung and unrecognized, has demonstrated creativity, vision, leadership, and citizenship by providing service to programs and activities that positively impact the welfare of people in Morinville.

Nominations should include how long the nominee has been a resident of Morinville, their group involvement, accomplishments over the past year and up to ten years, as well as commentary on the nominee’s commitment

and personal involvement in the community.If the nominee is not a resident of Morinville, nominators are asked to

include info on whether they have a business in Morinville and if they do their volunteering in the community.

A committee of three Lions members and the previous Citizen of the Year judge all nominations, which are kept confidential. If the previous year’s recipient is a Lions Club member, the Citizen of the Year Committee select a citizen at large to join them in reviewing the nominees.

Letter: Red light cameras Column: Joe MorinvilleIt seems like the people in Morinville are more interested in talking

about what Mr. Trump is doing and saying than what our own politicians at all levels of government are doing and saying. Suppose that makes some sense on account of our own politicians not being as colourful as the American ones, and I’m not talking about Mrs. Clinton’s pantsuits. It’s not that American politicians are better than ours. But it got me thinking about what Canadian politicians and citizens are up to.

Not likely to go toughy on DuffySenator Mike Duffy’s trial ended last Tuesday after ten months, and the

judge is supposed to decide by the end of April if he’s guilty of any of the 31 charges they got him up on for stuff like bribery and fraud. It sure made a lot of headlines and news reports when it started, but hardly a word was said last week when it got wrapped up. His lawyer says the other lawyer threw 31 charges at him, hoping one would stick. I’m not sure if anything will stick other than the cost of the trial with the taxpayers of this country.

eMail dinosaur or onto something?One Canadian politics story that got some attention last week was

when it was learned B.C.’s Finance Minister Mike de Jong don’t do email. But it got attention for the wrong reason — to make fun of the guy. Them boneheads what read the news on the different TV shows all made the same jokes about how they bet he used a rotary dial phone still. And people in the comment sections made fun of him on account of him being old fashioned and not with the times. But I think he might be onto something. He said, “When people are getting four to five hundred emails a day, when are they working?” It’s a good question, but nobody seemed to think about that. Instead, the mainstream media all picked on what’s maybe the one government employee what prefers to get work done instead of putting work off sending and answering a bunch of emails.

Take me to Timmy’sAnother Canadian news story what got missed by most of the people I

talk to was a young buck who got on a bus in Toronto and made the driver miss a few stops so he could drop him at Tim Hortons. Now I’ve been sitting at Timmy’s for my morning gab and seen them wheeling down the lane on two wheels to sit in the drive-through for 20 minutes. But I’ve never heard tell of someone so desperate for a jug of java that they pulled a knife on a bus driver. They arrested the guy right away, and I don’t know what the judge will give him. But if I were the judge, I’d make the sentence a double-double.

This letter is in response to our Page 7 article: Council puts brakes on red light and stop sign camera discussion

Cliff and I would publically like to thank Councillor Barry Turner, who intercepted Mr. Steer about the wording of the presentation. Having attended the Committee of the Whole meeting [Mar. 15], specifically to listen to this presentation, in our opinion it sounded like a sales pitch to Council on something that had already been decided on. Councillor Turner made it very clear that there has been no decision in Morinville to apply this technology.

Secondly, we would like to thank Councillor Stephen Dafoe for making the motion to table any discussion on this new technology until the Town’s Photo Enforcement Policy is reviewed, and to the rest of Council for unanimously agreeing to this motion. As we all know there has been a LOT of discussion regarding photo radar over the past few years – is it just a cash cow or is it truly about safety?

A statement in the article has raised a couple of questions and/or comment that I would like to raise in this letter. “Global Traffic Group covers all start-up costs and resources. There is no financial risk to the municipality for the equipment, but the town would have to enter into a three – to five – year contract with the company.”

My comment – In my mind there is always SOME financial risk of some sort that is not highlighted or outlined in any presentation but shows up later when the equipment and program is in place. I have not yet found anything that is totally free

My questions:The most concerning thing about this article is the mention of a

requirement to enter into a three – to five-year contract. I do not remember hearing this verbalized in the presentation, and so I would look to Council to ask Administration – is this true? Would this be a DIFFERENT and SEPARATE contract with Global Traffic Group as opposed to the current one we are in for Photo Radar with Information Technology Services (ITS)? If it is to become included as part of the photo radar contract would this not require a major revision? If we have to enter into a new contract would we go public with a Request for Proposal (RFP)?

Midstream Support Society members Linda Krauskopf and Joyce Preeper talked to the Morinville Lions Club Mar. 14 on working together to get a new building for the thrift store they operate in downtown Morinville.

The Society operates the Midstream Thrift Store (9922-101 Street) Monday to Friday and provides assistance for individuals and families in need. The Society looks after helping people to pay rent or damage deposits and has even bought tickets to get workers to Fort McMurray. Revenues from the Thrift Store assist those needs as well as school lunch programs, the Annual Santa Store, and Community Christmas Dinner.

With the downturn in the economy, those needs are growing, but the Society recently learned they will need to relocate.

“We have been advised that we have to leave the building we are in by the Town,” said Linda Krauskopf, President of the Midstream Support Society. “So we are going to be looking for grants and looking for partnerships.”

Krauskopf said she took over as President of the Midstream Support Society at the beginning of February this year and by the end of the month learned from David Schaefer, Morinville's Director of Community and Protective Services that they had to be out by the end of December. Krauskopf said there is no reason for them to leave, but Schaefer is alleged to have said: "Oh well, the building might be condemned, so we want you out."

Joyce Preeper told Lions Club members the society is not sure exactly where they stand (with the town). There is a meeting with Town Administration in June to see where things are at, and in the meantime Midstream is beginning their trail of seeing where, who and how they can form partnerships for themselves and with those in the same situation.

“I don’t like to wait and see what will happen next," Krauskopf said of the need to put feelers out. "I like to go out and see who we can connect with ... instead of waiting until the lease is up - they tell us to move out."

Longtime situationPreeper said former Mayor Paul Krauskopf was going to sign the lease

papers with the Society for the building in 2013, but passed away a few days after they had the paperwork ready for him. Preeper said they met with the Town Manager right after, and she said she was going to look after it, even suggesting a couple of places she thought they might want to go.

More than two years later, the Society finds itself looking for a place. But as most of the people Midstream service do not have vehicles and cannot travel, the Society feels potential suitable locations will be limited. "So it has to be someplace downtown where they can walk to it," Preeper said.

Finding a solutionKrauskopf says she believes Town

Council feels there is value as far as what the Midstream provides to the community. The Society is hoping the Town can assist in finding a resolution.

Andrew Isbister, Morinville's Interim CAO, said Midstream offers an important service to the Community, and that the Town wants to work with them.

"We want to ensure that it continues to operate in a facility that is suitable for its operations and safe for staff and volunteers operating the facility," he said, adding while the Town has not completed a formal assessment of the building; they do know it is coming to the end of its serviceable life.

"We do know that the building was designed and built as a residence, although I understand it did house Alta Gas offices followed by the ambulance service for a number of years," Isbister said. "Because it is now being used as a “commercial” operation, we are aware of a number of safety codes deficiencies. In addition, the building itself (which we understand was built in the 1940s) is now nearing the end of its useful life and was originally offered to Midstream as a temporary facility.”

Isbister confirmed a follow-up meeting would take place in two months "to discuss their future needs and to develop a future plan to deal with the facility."

Although that might require Midstream vacating the current site, he committed to assisting them in finding a new location.

"Should Midstream be required to move — we have not indicated a hard date for them to vacate the current building — but [we] will work with them to find a suitable location that meets their needs," Isbister said.

David Schaefer did not reply to a request for comment by our press deadline Friday.

Council puts brakes on red light and stop sign camera discussion


Global Traffic Group Ltd. owner David Steer and two colleagues came to the Mar. 15 Committee of the Whole meeting to make a presentation on the Town’s Automated Traffic Enforcement Program. Their primary focus was to give Council a first look at the stop sign and red light enforcement technology services that could be an addition to the program Global/ITS already offer.

Though Steer was clear the company was there merely to present to Council as a scheduled delegation, a format used to bring something to the attention of Council as information rather than a request for decision, Councillor Barry Turner, who was chairing the meeting until Deputy Mayor Rob Ladouceur arrived, intercepted Steer about the wording of the presentation.

“The language here is that the turnkey operation “will” include, it sounds like,” Turner said. “I just want to make it clear that right now there has been no decision in Morinville to apply this technology. That is so the public hears that. “Will” sounds like it will and we are not there.”

Steer went on to speak to Council about intersection safety, including stop signs and red light violations. The company have their own software and technology to be able to provide the red light cameras, typically valued at $100,000 each, to the town at no cost as mobile technology.

Steer said a box situated on the side of the road monitors violations and transfers the information to a peace officer who views the video. The government has given Global approval to post the violation video to a secure Internet site. The violator is provided a password to log into their page only and can view the video which shows clearly the violation occurring as opposed to photos in which the vehicles appears to be stopped.

Within three business days, tickets are in the mail and subsequent violations in the same week are given a warning.

Steer indicated camera methods are safer than stopping people manually and pulling them over. The idea is to give people the opportunity to improve their driving behaviour. The unit is mobile, so it wouldn’t always be in the same place.

Steer said the rollout of the program features one month of advertising to motorists, one month of warning tickets, and then ticketing will begin. Global Traffic Group covers all start-up costs and resources. There is no financial risk to the municipality for the equipment, but the town would have to enter into a three- to five-year contract with the company. Their turnkey solution includes peace officer training, enforcement equipment and vehicles, software, signage, maintenance, public advertising and awareness, and the statistical analysis and reporting required by both the municipality and the solicitor general.

After the presentation, Councillor Stephen Dafoe made a motion to table any discussion on the new technology until the Town’s Photo Enforcement Policy is reviewed, and to begin that review at the April Committee of the Whole meeting.

Mayor Holmes also echoed the sentiment to review the policy first.“I feel like one of the only things in life we are actually proactive on. We

are proactive on getting radar but not proactive on other things,” Holmes said. “I think this should get tabled until [we are] ready [for it] to come back.”

Dafoe’s motion passed unanimously.

Museum unveils bridal doll displayVolunteers Murray Knight, Yvon LeBlanc and Shirley Rosichuk, along

with Musee Morinville Museum Operations Attendant Donna Garrett, set up a doll bridal display at the museum last week in time for the wedding season.

Garrett said the four dolls were donated by Morinville resident Lil Boddez and were a collection created by Artist Phil Tumminio and titled From This Day Forward. The dolls feature the same bridal gown through four generations, each bride tailoring the dress to be fashionable for her own time. The dolls are Lisa from the 1990s, 1960 Beth, 1930 Betty and 1900s Elizabeth.

The Museum also has a new display of phones through the decades. The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday from noon until 5 p.m.

Summer toy run will roll again for Midstream


More than 100 motorcycle riders are expected to start and stop in Morinville June 4 for the second edition of an annual event that will support the Midstream Support Society.

Lions Club members and motorcycle enthusiasts Marty and Deb Robillard came up with the idea to hold the event last year and were pleased with the initial response.

“It was quite a success last year for the first run,” said co-organizer Deborah Robillard. “We had 60 bikes and were able to donate about $5,000 to the Midstream Support Society and a van load of toys. It was a wonderful event, and we couldn’t be more pleased that it took place. We are hoping we can exceed that this year.”

Passion for motorcycles

This year’s run is a rain or shine event. The route departs from Technical Automotives in the industrial park and will wind its way through Onaway, Alberta Beach, Barrhead, Westlock, before returning to Morinville.

Organizers are hoping 100 plus generous riders can help make a significant donation to the Midstream Support Society’s Santa Store.

Registration for the event is $25 per participant. Registration forms are available at Technical Automotives or TASER Inc. in the industrial park. Registration will also take place Friday, June 3 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Technical Automotives and Saturday morning up until 9:30 a.m.

The Robillards are hoping to include a 50/50 draw and poker run with this year’s event. They are encouraging participants and spectators to bring a toy and are presently looking for sponsors and volunteering for the June 4 Christmas in June Motorcycle Toy Ride.

Morinville Festival Society seeking site for Logger Sports climbing poles


Morinville Festival Society (MFS) President Korien Sampson and Society members Julie Booth and Kat Spencer made an informational presentation to the Town Council during their Mar. 15 committee meeting about growing the Logger Sports component of the annual summer festival.

The main discussion revolved around the placement, or not, of climbing poles for the Festival Society’s two-day Logger Sports event at this year’s St. Jean Baptiste Festival.

The Society has received a $10,000 sponsorship to place two climbing poles installed for a minimum of three to five years, but the placement remains in the air because the current festival site is also the current proposed site for the future home of the new public school.

“Because of the uncertainty of all sites, Administration has asked the MFS if there is an alternative temporary location,” said David Schaefer, Town of Morinville, Director of Community and Protective Services. “Because at this time, we don’t believe there is a site that would be three to five years, and the investment of $10,000, which is significant, may be lost.

“Because there are alternative sites to look at, but there is a lot of work that still has to be done in order to consider that site. The whole layout of the school at this point is really undetermined and what that is going to do. So any place for this type of structure is something Administration has expressed concerns and feels it is unlikely for this year. There are too many unanswered questions.”

Mayor Holmes said it is not so much a question of where the climbing

poles are going to go. For her, the real question is whether or not the town wants Council to support a long-term, permanent Logger Sports event in the community.

“Maybe not this year, but eventually, a permanent site that has all the pieces is what you are asking for,” she said, adding the event is still just one year in. The mayor went on to say she would like to see the Society bring in the log rolling pool as an additional event to build support for the sport rather than try to do the entire offering all at once.

Morinville’s St. Jean Baptiste Festival takes place June 24 to 26, 2016. The Logger Sports competition is set for June 25 and 26.

The Morinville Community Library will hold its third annual Library Comedy Show at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre Apr. 9. The licensed event is open to those 18 and older, and tickets are $20 each.

This year's fundraiser show features improv comedians Julian Faid and Kory Mathewson together with opening act Lawrence Wolf.

Faid has been improvising for 15 years, appearing in improv festivals in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver and Regina. Mathewson has shared the stage with top improv acts from across Canada, the United States, and Europe. In 2016, the two improv comedians presented TEDxRFT at the Seattle Festival of Improvised Theatre.

Opening act Lawrence Wolf has appeared on Bite TV, showcased for the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival and Sirius XM radio.

Library Manager Isabelle Cramp said they decided to break from their St. Jean Baptiste Festival connection this year and do the fundraiser earlier

so as not to compete with the busy festival weekend. "This is our third year doing it, and this is an event that seems to be

well received in the community," Cramp said. "We've had good attendance both years. We want to keep it going. The reason for the change is we find during the St. Jean Baptiste Festival people are really busy with everything that is going on, and we wanted to pull away from that a little bit to boost the attendance."

Unlike previous years, the Library will not be splitting profits with the Festival Society. Instead, library volunteers will take the tickets, run the show, and tend the bar.

Proceeds from this year's Library Comedy Show will go towards funding library programs, including computer workshops for seniors, the Summer Reading Program, and any special events the library might do in October.

Tickets are $20 each or $200 for a VIP table of eight. The table price includes two bottles of wine and snacks. Tickets can be purchased at the Morinville Community Library and online at EventBright. Doors open Apr. 9 at 7:30 p.m. with the show starting at 8 p.m.

Breaking the rules

Primeau student Kevin Hessell was one of many to pay $2 for the Break the Rules/Build a School fundraiser held last week at the school. Hessell said his pass allowed him to break a rule every day. Broken rules through the week included having a Kapow pop in class, allowing electronic devices at lunch, wearing hats all day, hanging out in the hall-way, and wearing PJs on Friday.

The school goal is to raise $10,000 to-wards the Pope Francis Elementary School building in the Philippines, a project in part-nership with Development and Peace. The GSACRD goal is to raise $200,000.

Two years ago a Morinville couple had a vision of bringing something different to the ice in Morinville. On Mar. 30, 2016, a hand full of children came out to try the sport, and seven months later 22 took to the ice for ringette’s first season int he community. A year later and that number was up 50 per cent.

Morinville Ringette had its wind-up Timbit Tournament Mar. 12 with four teams playing Morinville’s two teams. The event included two games for the Active Start (Under 7) players and three games for the Under ten players.

“The tournament was a resounding success,” organizer Andre Houle said. “The program is growing, and the Town is fully supporting them by getting them extra ice for next year. They have quality, dedicated coaching and are looking to expand the program through players and are also looking for coaches.”

Houle went on to thank players and parents for Morinville Ringette’s 2nd season, as well as sponsors Town of Morinville, Tim Hortons, Sobeys, No Frills, Morinville Sports, Total Machinery and the Morinville Sr. A Kings.

Wolves hit Provincialsby Morinville News Staff

The MCHS Wolves Sr. Girls made their sixth consecutive trip to the ASAA 3A Provincial Basketball Championships last week.

The Girls entered the court Thursday morning with a 53-43 win over Peace Wapiti and moved on to play a tough game against Chestermere that evening. In that contest, the Girls led Chestermere 17-14 after one and expanded the lead to 37-28 at the half. But the lead eroded to 48-46 after three. Chestermere rebounded to win the contest 65-62.

With one win and one loss, the Girls moved on to face Strathcona Christian on Friday. The Girls held a narrow lead through the first three quarters but widened the gap in the final quarter to earn a 72-51 win, and a spot in the consolation final Saturday morning.

The Wolves final game was against the Holy Trinity Academy Knights. The Girls advanced from a 19-19 first quarter stalemate to win the day with a 72-62 win and the AASA 3A Consolation Championship trophy.
