FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

First Reading: Jeremiah 31:31-34 The Lord comforted his people, who were exiled to Babylon, by telling them of the new covenant he planned to make with them. The Lord declared he would write his law upon their hearts, and that he would forgive their evil and forget the sins they had committed in the past.

Second Reading: Hebrews 5:7-9 Though God could have heeded his Son’s prayers and spared him suffering, Jesus accepted his Fathers will. Through his suffering, he learned obedience and became the source of eternal salvation for all people.

Gospel: John 12:20-33 Jesus was afraid of the suffering he knew he must face. Yet he explained just as a grain of wheat must die to be harvested, he had to face his hour of suffering to glorify his Father’s name. Jesus explained that once he was lifted from earth, he could draw all people to himself, lifting them to eternal life.

2015 ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal provides help to those in need! Together, we can and do make a profound difference in the lives of many individuals and families, in a way that exceeds anything we could hope to achieve on our own. Please consider supporting this important initiative. Every gift makes a difference. If you did not receive the Appeal mailing or have misplaced the pledge card and envelope, feel free to pick up one of the extra pledge cards and envelopes located in the rear of the Church. Thank you for your continued generosity and support.

A NOTE OF THANKS! Dear Fr. Leary, On behalf of The Catholic secondary schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford, I extend my deepest gratitude to you and your St. Peter Claver parishioners for donating $1,309 to the 2015 High School Collection. As expressed in the Ministerial Plan for Catholic Schools, excellent Catholic schools engage the entire Catholic community in helping young people find the road that leads to Jesus Christ. Thank you for partnering with us in this endeavor. Gratefully, Dale R. Hoyt, Ed. D Superintendent of Catholic Schools

VISITATION TO THE HOMEBOUND Visitation to the homebound is a beautiful ministry of presence and care with many blessings. Currently there are parishioners who visit the homebound and also provide the Eucharist if desired. We also have a

beautiful Prayer Shawl Ministry, whose shawls are given to the sick and homebound as a symbol of the love and support of our community. These ministries can only happen if we are able to make a connection with those who are in need. If you know of anyone, of ANY age, who is sick, disabled, or homebound for any reason and would be uplifted by these ministries, please contact Gigi Frailey in the Rectory Office. Caregivers can be uplifted by this ministry of visitation as well. Please help us to reach out to our brothers and sisters. There is no other way for us to know who is homebound or ill unless we are made aware. Thank You.

GOOD FRIDAY SACRED CONCERT The St. Peter Claver choir is proud to present a very powerful and spiritually moving concert this year on Good Friday, April 3rd, at 7:30 PM. The program will feature our wonderful choir, instrumentalists and soloists. Selections from Mozart, Rutter, and Lloyd Webber will be performed, as well as a sung Passion According to Saint John, with special guest, Charles Pistone, singing the role of Jesus. Please join us for this memorable event to heighten the solemnity of this season. Only a free will offering will be requested.

This Sunday’s Gospel prepares us to journey with Christ during Holy Week, reminding us that Jesus stayed focused on his purpose and gave glory to God by accepting suffering and death for our salvation. Jesus tells us that a grain of wheat must die in order to produce much fruit. The sufferings of Jesus will bring many to life! Jesus reminds us that we cannot hold on too tightly to the things of this world if we want the happiness of following Him. Sometimes this means that we have to give up things in order to help others. When we do this, we become good disciples of Jesus and give glory to God, too!

Contact the Faith Formation Office with any questions at 860-521-2904 or email at [email protected].

Let us pray ~

Lord Jesus, You taught us that before a grain of wheat can grow and produce much fruit, it must die. Help us to remember that we must die to

selfishness and sin so that we can grow in kindness and love. Thank You for the lessons You teach us by Your death and resurrection to New Life!

We ask this in Your Holy Name. Amen.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

Psalm 51:10

The 5th Sunday of Lent marks the beginning of Passiontide. The First Reading is taken from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah. We hear the prophet foretelling a New Covenant, to replace the Old Covenant made between God and his Chosen People on Mt. Sinai, a covenant which the Chosen People had not kept. The New

Covenant would not be written on tablets of stone but on each individual's heart. It would be a covenant of love rather than one of obligation. Everyone will know the Lord and He will forgive the sin of all His people!

We wish to thank our Grade 9 and 10 Students for their participation and generous donations to the Kids Against Hunger Outreach Project, which took place last week at St. Helena Parish. Our students raised $370 for this cause!

Special Thanks to Mrs. Maureen DiMatteo and Mr. John O’Gorman for accompanying our group of volunteers. They reported to us that our teens, along with teens from area parishes, packaged over 16,000 meal pouches, which will be sent to Haiti. What a wonderful observance of Lenten almsgiving - - which is giving to the poor with love!
