SCHOOL SHOUT-OUTS

St. Bonaventure SchoolWith the beginning of winter behind us and the Lenten season upon us, St. Bonaventure celebrated Shrove Tues-day with pancakes for all the staff and students. Our school community is always invited to join us on our spiritual jour-ney beginning with Ash Wednesday and participating in the Stations of the Cross prior to Easter.

Academics goes beyond the classroom. Teachers have had the opportunity to develop themselves profession-ally through two recent professional days and the annual teachers’ convention. Students have also experienced some extracurricular opportunities through such activities as Junior Achievement and various guest speakers.

Athletically, the basketball season has been in full swing with the playoff run ending with city finals at the begin-ning of March. Good luck to both our senior teams as they pursue ‘March madness’. A group of dedicated dancers is preparing to take part in the district’s Danceworks evening at the beginning of April. Danceworks is a celebration of all that is fun about dance and movement.

Clean Up, Clean Up, Everybody Everywhere!

We are partnering with Queensland/Diamond Cove again for the Community’s cleanup day. This year the day will be June 24 at Queensland Community Hall. We will provide details regarding time in the following newsletter.

VOLUNTEER FORMFunny Things About March You Probably Didn’t Know

1. It’s March—Happy New Year, ancient Romans!Welcome to the third month of the year—or, if you were born before 150 B.C., the first! According to the oldest Roman calendars, one year was ten months long, beginning in March and ending in December. It may sound crazy, but you can still see traces of this old system in our modern calendar: because December was the tenth month, it was named for the number ten in Latin (decem), just like September was named for seven (septem). So, what about January and February? They were just two nameless months called “winter”, proving that winter is literally so awful it doesn’t even deserve a spot on the calendar.

2. It’s also the best month for vasectomiesAccording to doctors at the Cleveland Clinic, the number of vasectomies surge by 50 percent during the first week of March Madness. Why? Patients typically need “at least a day with ice” to keep swelling down, says urologist Stephen Jones, MD, “So if they’re going to spend a whole day doing nothing, it’s not hard to figure out that they’d want to do it on a day they’d like to be sitting in front of the television.”

Smart clinics even offer incentives, like the Cape Cod urologists who offered a free pizza with every vasectomy in March 2012. That deal is certainly a cut above the rest!

3. March was named for war—and lives up to its titleSo, if so many months were named for their Latin numbers, why wasn’t March called… unumber? Firstly, because that sounds ridiculous, and sec-ondly, because the Gods had dibs on it. March was actually named for the Latin Martius—aka Mars, the Roman God of war and a mythical ancestor of the Roman people via his wolf-suckling sons, Romulus and Remus. With the winter frosts melting and the ground becoming fertile for harvest again in the Northern hemisphere, March was historically the perfect month for both farmers to resume farming, and warriors to resume warring.

Incidentally, the Pentagon still seems to agree with this Roman tradition: with the exception of the recent War on Afghanistan, almost all major US-NATO led military operations since the invasion of Vietnam have begun in the month of March. To name a few: Vietnam (initiated March 8, 1965), Iraq (March 20, 2003), and Libya (March 19, 2011) all follow the trend. Need more reasons to love March? Here are just enough to complete a dozen

4. March 2: NASA astronaut Scott Kelly will return from space after one full year, setting a new record for the longest uninterrupted trip to space.

5. March 5: Thirsty bros observe Cinco De Marcho, initiating a 12-day drinking regimen for anyone who wishes to “train one’s liver for the closing ceremonies on St. Patrick’s Day.”

6. March 13: Daylight saving time begins signaling it’s not alwaaaayyss dark.

7. March 14: Pi Day celebrates the annual occurrence of 3/14 with math jokes, pi-reciting competitions, and (of course) fresh baked pie.

8. March 17: St. Patrick’s Day turns the Chicago River green, and too many livers cirrhosis-damage-brown. And on this day in 1973, Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of The Moon” first hits the Billboard Top 200 chart at number 95. A mere 14 years later (736 chart weeks, to be exact), it finally leaves the top 200 for the first time, setting a still-unbroken world record. (You’ve got a long way to go, Adele.)

9. March 20: The sun shines on the equator for the Vernal Equinox, giving us a near 50-50 split of day and night.

10. March 21: The 10th anniversary Twitter founder Jack Dorsey inaugurating the social media site with its profound first tweet: “just setting up my twttr”. Little did he know twitter would be the prefer means of communication of world leaders (seriously?).

11. March 27: Easter Sunday

12. March 28: Gorge Yourself on Discount Easter Candy Monday

It will be a busy month in the Alberta Legislature with the commencement of Spring Session on March 8th. As the Op-position, no notification has been given on what Bills will be upcoming this session other than we know the budget must come forth. Currently, Albertans have been given no firm date for budget release, but the week of March 19th would be a safe bet given the process that must ensue. Feedback on the budget is welcome, prior to or after its release, so please do not hesitate to contact me. As members of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, our job is to not only hold the government to account, but to do so in a respectful manner. Our newly sworn-in leader Jason Kenney, who many of you know as our long-serving area MP, has pledged to uphold civility in the Legislature and to attack policy, not people. This mirrors my commitment to you as your elected representative.

To keep our community safe, our Calgary Police Service com-munity liaison has asked me to remind residents of simple protective measures. Lock our houses, lock our cars, do not leave cars running unattended, and put all valuables out of view, while reporting all thefts and suspicious activity. These acts can keep our communities and families safer and allow the CPS to better do their job.

One of the great winter-time pleasures in Canada is pond/lake hockey and skating. In Calgary Fish Creek, we are blessed with a number of outdoor facilities in which families can ex-ercise, have fun and also enjoy Canada’s greatest game. We thank our community volunteers for countless hours spent in clearing and grooming these rinks. Did you know that Alberta has a pond hockey championship every year? This year’s tour-nament is March 9-11th near Peace River. Our province offers wonderful opportunities for events for the whole family. For more information on this and other great activities, visit Trav-el Alberta’s website at www.travelalberta.com.

If you are looking to camp this summer, I would encourage you to book your provincial campsite soon through Alberta Parks on-line reservation system at www.albertaparks.ca. Reserva-tions opened up for all Provincial Parks on various dates in Feb-ruary; so, book early to secure your camping spot for some great outdoor memories under the stars or singing by a campfire.

My next MLA Café will be on Saturday March 3rd from 9-10:30am at Cornerstone Music Café. Join me for coffee, hot chocolate and conversation on Alberta’s future, the coming Budget and the important session ahead!

Councillor, Ward 14 Peter Demong

www.calgary.ca/ward14 [email protected] or 403-268-1653

Hi Ward 14,

By the time March is over the seasons will have changed, and you might also say the way the City of Calgary deals with sec-ondary suites is entering a new season.

Changes to Secondary Suite Approval ProcessOn December 11, 2017—with a new Council in place—some major changes were made to the way we approve secondary suite applications in a 10-5 vote. Those changes would effec-tively eliminate the need for applications across Calgary to be voted on by Council, leaving administration to decide their fate. But these changes must be officially put into the City’s Land Use Bylaw, and a public hearing must be held. You may have received a letter about this in your mail. Your chance to speak is on March 12 in Council Chambers, and you have until March 5 at noon to submit written comments. These are BIG changes that will impact the entire City, so I encourage you to visit calgary.ca/ward14newsletter for more details.

Changes in Waste & RecyclingThe topic of how we deal with our waste is one of my favourites because of how inconspicuously it has an enormous impact on our lives. Visit calgary.ca/ward14newsletter, where I will go into much more detail about the changes over the last year.

CounciltalkYou may not like the landfills hours. You may question why we need green bins. You may want to let your Councillor know how you feel about these things. That is why there is Counciltalk.

The first ever Counciltalk in Douglasdale was great. Thanks to those who showed! March’s Counciltalk is coming quick. We will be at the Southview Church in Walden (20200 Walden Blvd SE) on March 3 between noon and 2 p.m. I hope to see you there.

If you didn’t already know, you should not hesitate to contact me anytime. Have a great month, and don’t forget to go to calgary.ca/ward14newsletter to get the rest of this article.

St. Patrick is known for his driving the snakes out of Ireland. However, scientific and archeo-logical evidence show that there were never snakes in post-glacial Ireland to begin with. Of the many feats St. Patrick accomplished dur-ing his life, it seems reptile pest control was not one of them.
