10 INSTALLATION AND CONNECTIONS

Audio and Speaker Connections

After unpacking the unit and placing it on asolid surface capable of supporting its weight, you will need to make the connections to youraudio and video equipment. These steps need tobe done only when the receiver is first installedor when a change is made to the input sourceequipment.

Audio Equipment ConnectionsWe recommend that you use high-quality inter-connect cables when making connections tosource equipment and recorders to preserve thequality of the signals.

When making connections to audio sourceequipment or speakers it is always a good prac-tice to unplug the unit from the AC wall outlet. This prevents any possibility of accidentally send-ing audio or transient signals to the speakersthat may damage them.

1. Connect the analog output of a CD player tothe CD inputs .

NOTE: When the CD player has both fixed andvariable audio outputs, it is best to use the fixedoutput unless you find that the input to thereceiver is so low that the sound is noisy, or sohigh that the signal is distorted.

2. Connect the Play/Out jacks of a cassette deck,CDR, MD or other audio recorder to the TapeMonitor Play jacks . Connect the Record/Injacks on the recorder to the Tape MonitorRec. Out jacks on the HK 3490/HK 3390.When the tape deck connected to these jacks isa three-head unit or has off-head playback, itwill be possible to monitor the output of thesource being recorded.

3. Connect the audio and/or video outputs of a second audio recorder, VCR or other line-levelaudio device to the Video 1 Audio/VideoInput Jacks . If a recorder is used, connectits Rec/In jacks to the matching outputs .

4. The audio output of any electronics productwith a line-level output, such as a TV set, satel-lite receiver or DVD, may be connected to theVideo 2 and Video 3 Audio/Video inputs .

NOTE: In order to view the video signals of anydevices connected to the Video 1 , Video 2 or Video 3 Video Inputs, you will needto connect the Video Monitor Output jackto the composite video input of your TV or othervideo display device.

5. Connect the outputs of a turntable with amoving magnet cartridge to the Phono inputs. To insure that the phono playback is noise-free, connect the ground wire from the tone-armto the Phono Ground terminal .

6. Assemble the AM Loop Antenna supplied withthe unit as shown below. Connect it to the AMspring loaded terminals .

7. Connect an FM antenna to the FM Antennaconnection . The FM antenna may be anexternal roof antenna, an inside powered or wirelead antenna or a connection from a cable sys-tem. Note that if the antenna or connection uses300-ohm twin-lead cable, you must use the300-ohm-to-75-ohm adapter supplied with theunit to make the connection.

8. If you wish to use external processing equip-ment, such as an equalizer, you may connect thedevice to the preamp-out and main-in jacks byremoving the Preamp-Out/Main-In JumperPins that connect the Preamp Out jacks tothe Main In jacks, and inserting the externaldevice, Preamp Out to the inputs of the externaldevice and the outputs of the device to the MainInput.Alternatively, you may connect the externaldevice to the Tape Monitor Loop. Connect theTape Monitor Record/Out jacks to theinputs of the external device, and connect theoutputs of the device to the Tape MonitorPlay/In jacks .

9. HK 3490 is equipped with a digital/analogconverter, permitting you to connect any digitalmusic player (CD player, MP3, Mini-Disc) thatoutputs a PCM digital signal for superior soundquality. Also, a DVD player may be connected forfirst rate stereo or Virtual Dolby Surround moviesound, provided that you set the DVD player'ssetup menu to always send out PCM-formatfrom the digital outputs. You have two input options, Coaxial digitalIn and Optical digital In (TosLink) . Youcan choose freely, and you may use both inputssimultaneously. See page 12 for explanation ofhow to select the Digital Inputs for listening.

10. (HK 3490 only). With the HK 3490 turnedoff, connect the optional Harman Kardon

to Digital Media Player(DMP) Connector . Your compatible Apple®

iPod® may be docked in when youwish to use it as your audio source device. Videomaterials stored on the iPod cannot to beviewed using the HK 3490.

Speaker and Output ConnectionsRegardless of the brand of cable selected, werecommend that you use a cable constructed offine, multistrand copper with an area of min. 2 mm2.

Cable with 1.5 mm2 may be used for short runsof less than 3 meters. We do not recommendthat you use cables with an area of 0.8 mm2 orsmaller due to the power loss and degradationin performance that will occur.

Questions about running cables inside wallsshould be referred to an installer or a licensedelectrical contractor who is familiar with applica-ble local building codes in your area.

When connecting wires to the speakers, be cer-tain to observe proper polarity. Remember toconnect the “negative” or “black” wire to theblack minus terminals on the receiver and thespeaker. The "plus" or "red" wire should beconnected from the red plus-terminal on thereceiver to the "red" plus-terminal on the rightspeaker and the white plus-terminal on thereceiver to the "red" plus-terminal on the leftspeaker.

We also recommend that the length of cableused to connect speaker pairs be identical. Forexample, use the same length piece of cable toconnect the Speaker 1 left and right orSpeaker 2 left and right speakers, even if thespeakers are a different distance from the HK3490/HK 3390.

NOTE: To assure proper phase, and optimal per-formance, consult the identification plate onyour speaker, or the speaker’s manual to verifypolarity. If you do not know the polarity of your speaker, assure that both speakers are connected withthe same polarity, i.e. speaker wires or terminalswith any marking should be connected to thered terminals on the speakers speaker terminalson the HK 3490/HK 3390, the others to theblack ones (see connections below).

Connect the speakers using the following steps:

1. Connect the main speakers to the Speaker 1terminals .

2. Connect a second set of speakers, or speakersthat are in a second room location, to theSpeaker 2 terminals .

3. When an optional, powered subwoofer (notthe active Sub of a Sub/Sat-System) is used, con-nect the outputs of the mono Sub woofer Outjacks to the line-level input of the subwoofer. If the subwoofer has no single line input, and ifyou cannot obtain sufficient woofer level usingonly one of the two inputs, use an optional Y-splitter to separate the sub mono signal from thereceiver into two channels for the two inputs onthe subwoofer. When a separate passive sub-woofer is used, these connections will be madeto the optional amplifier that powers the sub-woofer.

If a Sub/Sat system is used (active or passive),connect the Speaker 1 terminals to the

Installation and Connections

speaker-level inputs on the subwoofer, and thenconnect the speaker-level outputs on the sub-woofer to your main left and right speakers, fol-lowing the instructions provided with the sub-woofer.

If your subwoofer can be switched on and offwith a trigger signal from the receiver, connecteither of the two Trigger Out mini-jacks tothe subwoofer's Trigger Input with a suitablecable, which usually comes with the subwoofer,or may be purchased separately. This means thatthe subwoofer (which is otherwise usuallyswitched on and off automatically by an internalsignal sensor) stays on as long as you listen tomusic or movie sound. Even if no deep bass ispresent in the signal for a while, the subwooferdoes not go into standby mode when it is con-trolled by the trigger signal. Otherwise, whencontrolled by a bass signal sensor, you may notexperience the first bass impulse when bassreturns, after the subwoofer has gone intostandby mode, because it has to switch on first.

This means that you may have a Speaker system1 and a Speaker system 2 in two differentrooms, each with its own active subwoofer thatswitches on when you select Speakers 1 orSpeakers 2. You may also have two active sub-woofers in one room, one that is always workingwith your main Speaker 1 set of speakers, theother to be switched on or off according to yourtaste if connected to the Sub Out linked toSpeaker 2, without any speakers being connect-ed to the Speaker 2 terminals. This makes it easyto add a second subwoofer only when watchingmovies, where extra bass level may be desirable.Set the uppermost LINK S/W ON/OFF switch thatcontrols the Trigger Out voltage for Speaker Set1 to ON if you want this subwoofer to switch onONLY when you select Speaker Set 1. Set theswitch OFF if you want the subwoofer to alwaysreceive the Trigger Out ON voltage and thereforebe switched ON always, even if you selectSpeaker Set 1 to be OFF.

Repeat for the lowermost switch if you have twosubwoofers or wish to switch your single sub-woofer ON and OFF separately with the Speakerset 2 switch.

If your subwoofer is not equipped with a TriggerVoltage input, the position of these two switchesis irrelevant.

System and Power Connections

Your Harman Kardon receiver is designed forflexible use with external control componentsand power amplifiers. These connections areeasy to make during an initial installation, or ata later date should you choose to upgrade yoursystem.

Remote Control ExtensionIf the receiver is placed behind a solid or smokedglass cabinet door, the obstruction may preventthe remote sensor from receiving commands. Inthis event, an optional remote sensor may beused. Connect the output of the remote sensorto the Remote IR In jack .

If other components are also prevented fromreceiving remote commands, only one sensor isneeded. They may use this unit’s sensor or aremote eye by running a connection from theRemote IR Out jack to the Remote In jackon Harman Kardon or other compatible equip-ment.

External Audio Power Amplifier ConnectionsIf desired, an optional, external amplifier may beused in place of the HK 3490/HK 3390’s internalpower amplifier.

To connect an external power amplifier, firstremove the Pre-Out/Main-In Jumper Pins that connect the Preamp Out and Main In jacks on the rear panel. Keep the jumpers ina safe place should they be needed at a latertime.

Using high-quality audio interconnect cables, connect the Preamp Out jacks to the inputjacks on your power amplifier. Make certain tomatch the right output to the right input and theleft output to the left input.

Note that when an external power amplifier isused, no special adjustments are required. Allvolume and other control adjustments are madeusing the standard front panel or remote con-trols.

AC Power ConnectionsThis unit is equipped with two accessory AC out-lets. They may be used to power accessorydevices, but it should not be used with high-cur-rent draw equipment such as power amplifiers. The total power draw may not exceed 100W foreach outlet.

This Switched AC Outlets will receivepower only when the unit is on. This is recom-mended for devices that have no power switch,or those with a mechanical power switch thatmay be left in the “ON” position.

NOTE: Devices with electronic power switchesmay only go into a Standby mode when pluggedin here.

Speaker PlacementFor optimal listening enjoyment, and for sound-field reproduction that best re-creates the origi-nal recording, it is good practice to place thespeakers so that they form a triangle with thespeakers at the front of the room, and the pre-ferred listening spot at the third point of the tri-angle. The distance between each speaker andthe listener should be identical.

For example, if the speakers are 2,5 meters fromone another, each of the speakers should opti-mally be placed so that they are also 2,5 metersfrom the listener. It is also desirable to placespeakers so that their tweeters, or highfrequencydrivers, are aimed at ear height when you areseated in the listening position.

A good starting point for speaker placement is to makethe distance between the two speakers and the distancebetween either speaker and the listener identical.

To optimize the sound field, or to suit your lis-tening room environment, you may find thatsome experimentation is required to find thecorrect location. Ideally, pans from left to rightacross the front of the room should soundsmooth, and instruments should appear to becoming from the proper location within anorchestra.

The placement of subwoofers should be done assuggested in the manufacturer’s instructions. Ingeneral, subwoofers often produce best resultswhen they are placed in the corner of a room, along the same wall as the speakers, but optimalplacement will vary widely depending on roomsize, the subwoofer type and the placement ofrugs and furniture in a room. It may be helpfulto temporarily position the subwoofer in theusual listening position, then walk around theroom while program material is playing until thebass reproduction sounds best to your ears. Thatlocation is likely to be the optimum position forthe subwoofer.

Finally, when all connections are complete, plugthe power cord into a nonswitched 230-volt ACwall outlet. You’re ready to enjoy the HK 3490/HK 3390!

Memory Backup

This product is equipped with a memory backupsystem that preserves tuner presets if the unit isaccidentally unplugged, turned off completely bydisconnecting from the main power source orsubjected to a power outage. The unit’s memory is stored in an EEPROM, andthus the HK 3490/HK 3390 will retain informa-tion such as programmed presets for a virtuallyinfinite time without being connected to a mainpower source.

Processor Reset

In the rare case where the unit’s operation or thedisplays seem abnormal, the cause may involvethe erratic operation of the system’s memory ormicroprocessor.

To correct this problem, first unplug the unit fromthe AC wall outlet and wait at least three min-utes. After the pause, reconnect the AC powercord and check the unit’s operation. If the systemstill malfunctions, a system reset may clear theproblem. To reset the system, first turn the HK3490/HK 3390 off either by pressing the MainPower Switch on the rear panel to OFF, ordisconnecting the unit from the main powersource..

Next, press and hold the MUTE 5 and thePreset Scan @ buttons at the same time on thefront panel ONLY.When the receiver switches Onand the Main Information Display shows theword RESET, release both buttons. The receiverreturns to Standby Mode.

Note that when the system is reset in this fash-ion, all tuner presets will be lost and must bereentered.

If the system is still operating incorrectly, theremay have been an electronic discharge or severeAC line interference that has corrupted the mem-ory or microprocessor. If these steps do not solvethe problem, consult your dealer or an authorizedHarman Kardon service center.

Using the Remote Control

It is convenient to think of the functions of theremote control buttons in terms of “pages”,where each source device (e.g. CD player) repre-sents its own page of remote functions. Theresult is that some of the keys will perform dif-ferent functions depending upon which devicepage has been selected prior to pressing the

key. Device pages are selected by pressing theSource Selectors ç, which also changes theinput source selection on the HK 3490/HK 3390.Source Selectors ç need not to be pressedwith each function, but only when you intend toskip to another device to be controled.

The Video 1, Vide 2, Video 3, Tape Monitor/CDRand CD device pages are factory-programmed to

operate compatible Harman Kardon products.

Video 1 controls Harman Kardon DMC players,Video 2 and 3 controls Harman Kardon DVDplayers, Tape Monitor controls Harman KardonCDR players/recorders, CD controls HarmanKardon CD players.
