#Region14ProudBethlehem Elementary School Celebrations

• We expanded our community this year by adding twelve PreKindergarten students to our BES family.

• Our K/1 students are really ‘showing what they know’ with their new Samsung Galaxy tablets - 1 for every student this year!

• Our first ‘WeSing’ Connecticut Children’s Concert was held this winter at MES with students from BES, MES and WMS participating- such talent!

• Students at BES know how to share strategies and mathematical thinking with our new math curriculum!

• BES students develop success goals (i.e. increase their reading volume, include more elaboration in their writing, find another way to solve a math problem or increase their steps/minute using their pedometers?)

#Region14ProudBethlehem Elementary School Celebrations

• Ten BES staff members participated in the 2nd Teacher Leadership Academy (TLA) Cohort this summer- they are now leading monthly feedback/learning lab sites this year at BES.

• Professional learning is energetic, dynamic and interactive as BES colleagues collaborate, lead and stretch each other’s thinking on a daily basis.

• Students and staff are discussing different genres during our quarterly ‘Book Buzz’ meetings. Teachers and students learn to share what makes a text great.

• BES has Talent! For the very first time, students are meeting monthly with their Drama Club advisors to produce short skits to share with BES students & staff.

• Coaching, collaboration, collegiality! The BES Instructional Leaders work together to build their own capacity as well as support our certified staff to help our teachers to be the most effective instructional educators they can be.

• ‘Ready, Set, Auction’….our first PTO sponsored Silent Auction at the Watertown Golf Club raised almost $10,000 for BES students and staff.

• Students at BES have learned to effectively use new flexible seating and learning spaces.

• Hour of Code, Power Hour, Innovation Lab, Robotics, TBT- so many options for our students to be creative, innovative and collaborative.

• Monthly lunches at Ruddock’s Restaurant celebrate the many kind, caring ‘Bucket-Fillers’ at BES- character counts.

• MES welcomed the successful integration of Pre-K• The MES Student Council fundraiser of more than 700 food

items for the 100th Day of School.• MES teachers are now leading monthly feedback/learning

lab sites this year within the elementary buildings.• MES students engaged in Mystery Skypes around the world

and the Cardboard Challenge here in Region 14 with our Library Media Specialist.

• MES 5th grader Greg Voros performing with the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra.

• MES students came out for the fantastic Math Club in Grades 2 & 3 with our Math Instructional Leader.

• MES students in 2nd grade class learned about their community and the Woodbury Senior Center.

• MES welcomed Snowshoeing as part of our commitment to the whole child.

• MES and BES musicians held a beautiful winter concert with our new music teacher.

• MES parents came out for our Math and Literacy “Show What You Know” events.

• The MES Student Council attended a leadership training at Naugatuck Valley Community College in January.

• STEAM integration with Power Hour and PTO sponsored assemblies.

• MES teachers used multiple flexible seating opportunities for students to build their capacity of how they learn best.

• WMS participated in the state-wide Nutmeg Book Award program.

• Six of our 6th grade ILA students have submitted superior writing to the UCONN Writing Project with the opportunity for publication this spring.

• Installation of a rotating student art gallery in LMC.• WMS piloted a Digital Citizenship curriculum for 6th grade

students.• Our Library Media Specialist kicked-off National Book

month (January) with a “book tasting” in the LMC for all.• WMS 7th grader Kailey Moore took First Place in the

American Chemical Society National Chemistry Week Illustrated Poem Contest. Chemistry Rocks was this year’s theme.

Woodbury Middle School Celebrations#Region14Proud

• Student Community Service Projects--Collecting bottles and cans and redeeming them weekly. Proceeds will be donated to the Woodbury Food Bank.

• Warrior for Warmth prepared 500 sandwiches to be donated to the St Vincent DePaul Shelter in Waterbury.

• WMS offered coding club for all grades in the LMC during Halftime.

• WMS “Family” was established each morning to promote a sense of belonging for all middle school students.

• The Warrior Council sponsored the 5th annual Pancake Breakfast and the 4th annual Turkey Shoot.

• 6th grade students created one of a kind accordion books with visiting artist Ms.Tibbatts in connection with ASAP

• 145 WMS students have participated on a WMS athletics team.

• The Year Three Boys Soccer team goes undefeated.• WMS musicians performed and participated in the NHS

Music Festival.• 7th grade girls participated in the STEM Expo.• WMS students participated in NHS unified basketball.• Spanish students applied their learned Spanish to create

cooking videos using their Spanish and culinary skills.• Whole school student programs promoting kindness,

acceptance and safety --all WMS students attended a viewing of the movie, “Wonder”.

• The Anti-defamation League will be presenting a program to encourage all students to be allies to others who are subjected to unkind behaviors by their peers.

• Scott Driscoll, a CT police officer, will be presenting Internet safety concepts including cyberbullying to the student body.

● 90% of the Class of 2017 went on to two- or four- year colleges - the remaining 10% military and workforce opportunities. (10% increase over last year)

● NHS four year university enrollment is trending upward. 79% of NHS students opt for four year colleges and universities vs. 64 % last year.

● Total UConn ECE 2017-18 – 179 students, 293 enrollments (up from 247 in 2016-17) (46 more this year-duplicative enrollments incl.) ** Approx. 542,000 in $ college education-wise. (approx.. 1,850 per course @UConn)

● NHS recognized 52 AP Scholars in 2017.

● Last May, 240 Nonnewaug students took 494 AP Exams. (32% of total student body)

● NHS is one of only 12 Connecticut high schools to offer the AP Capstone Seminar and have the special designation of AP Capstone Diploma School.

● Over 100 college and career school representatives visited NHS who held on site information sessions for students.

● Scholarship Pizza Party held after school by counselors to assist over 70 Grade 12 students in completing scholarship applications.

● NHS added new courses in Farm to Table, Sports Literature and Research, Multicultural Literature, Computer Programming with more to come next year.

● NHS Culinary students catered school events such as Scholarship Night, Open House, College Night, and the Berkshire League Music Directors and assisting with serving the National FFA Alumni Regional Development Conference.

● The Advanced Culinary Arts caters two community service events with the Senior Citizens of Region 14 annually.

● NHS students host Holiday Meal with the assistance of the music department, Agri-science, ADL students, FBLA the Art Department, Digital Design students and the custodial staff.

● NHS invites the seniors to NHS for our annual Spring Luncheon & Musical. This year’s production is Footloose.

• The new Farm to Table class offers real world hands on experience giving students the opportunity to complete a food cycle from planting, cultivating, harvesting and cooking fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables.

• Farm to Table students studied local honey from our hives, fresh fish from our aquaculture tanks, meat cutting meat production class, tapping maple syrup from NHS sugar maples and utilizing fruits, meats and dairy from local farms.

• Farm to Table students assisted with preparing food for the annual Farm to Table scholarship fundraising dinner.

• NHS Farm to Table teachers are offering a Farm to Table continuing education course in April.

Nonnewaug High School Celebrations#Region14Proud

● Woodbury FFA chapter had six state-winning judging teams compete at the National FFA Convention last fall, the most teams in the same year from any one chapter in the country.

● Woodbury FFA Teams earned one gold medal, three silver medals, and two bronze medals with five individual gold medals, six silver medals and ten bronze medals.

● Woodbury FFA had three state champion FFA judging teams last fall (Meats Evaluation, Floriculture and Horse Judging) and will go to Nationals this fall to compete.

● Four Agriscience instructors are certified UCONN ECE instructors and currently are teaching four UCONN ECE courses. (Horse Management, Floriculture, Veterinary Science and Food Science)

● NHS offers the Texas A & M Veterinary Technician Certification Course.

● NHS Local Food Production and Sustainable Food Production classes grew and donated over 500 lbs. of vegetables to the Woodbury Food Bank.

● NHS students grew and sold vegetables to the Nonnewaug Cafeteria, local restaurants, and culinary classes.

● NHS students packed up 18,000 lbs. of food-16,724 meals for senior citizens in their Community Service trip to the Connecticut Food Bank in Wallingford.

Nonnewaug High School Athletics#Region14Proud

● Unified Sports continues to grow in popularity with over 40 athletes this winter and spring season.

● Later in March Unified Sports will be in collaboration with Project Blue Paw to fortify relationship between local law enforcement and student leaders here at Nonnewaug.

● Unified Buddies completed our third year together. We follow the model of Unified Sports and include weekly activities such as baking cookies and bringing them to the Woodbury Senior Center for an afternoon of BINGO with the Seniors, we have lessons involving healthy eating and preparing fresh fruit salad, a discussion of Veteran’s Day and making posters to display in the school, a safe celebration of Halloween with club-made cookies and making Christmas ornaments.

● Unified Basketball traveled to Hartford to collaborate with Connecticut Special Olympics leaders at the annual Unified Summit held at the Aetna building.

Nonnewaug High School Athletics Celebrations#Region14Proud

• The Unified Basketball team scheduled five tournaments this season. We hosted four of them; Oxford HS/Shepaug HS, and Newtown were our first two. We competed against Coach York's varsity swim team and will be playing our annual Unified vs Faculty match next week. Also next week, we are attending a tournament at Lewis Mills HS.

• Unified Volleyball will begin in April. We will host several tournaments including our Unified vs Faculty match. We will also travel to North Haven HS where we will compete with eight schools from around the state.

• Unified Sports leaders Rebecca Hibbard and Andrew Stone to be acknowledged at the AquaTurf banquet club this spring for their achievements.

● State Title: Girls Cross Country Class M.● Berkshire League Titles: Girls Outdoor Track, Girls

Tennis, Girls Cross Country and Girls Volleyball.● Several all-state athletes in various sports in all seasons,

including our first all-state football player.● 83 Berkshire League Scholar athletes.● Thirteen All Berkshire League athletes, one All Pequot

League, and six all state athletes.● Football hosted a game under the lights in Oxford this year

and we ended our season by beating Mills on Thanksgiving.● We continued our commitment to our co-op hockey team,

adding eight players this year.

● Students once again designed and voted on our “tribe” shirt – a student lead cheering section at our home competitions.

● Several teams participated in raising money for breast cancer awareness and our softball team participated in the Shamrock Shuffle.

● Our baseball team is headed to Cooperstown over spring break this year, and our tennis team is going to a spring training trip to Hilton Head.

● Our Cheer team competed at Nationals in Virginia.● NHS joined forces with the Woodbury Senior Center to

organize a picture day for both Bethlehem & Woodbury seniors to get their picture and obtain their “Senior Chief Pass”. Seniors get free access to any NHS event, including regular season games and the musical each year. Passes never expire!

● All Region 14 students in grades pre K through 8th received wristbands allowing free access to all NHS athletic events.

● Athletes participated in Mitchell Elementary School’s Read Across America Day to read to younger students and shared why learning and reading is so important.

● Jennifer Charrette won the Edward B Kolakoski Award – one senior girl basketball player in the Berkshire League who has good skills, positive leadership and promotes the game of basketball through their efforts and determination.

● For the 2016-2017 school year, NHS won the Ted Alex Award by The Berkshire League. The Award is determined based on winning percentage of each team competing and our sportsmanship rating based on the view of opposing teams. For sportsmanship, our team, coaches, player and fans are all evaluated.

● Welcomed 27 new staff members to Region 14 within the 2017-18 School year (includes certified and classified staff. New teacher mentors trained to provide induction support to beginning teachers.

● Expanded membership of district Professional Development and Evaluation Committee (PDEC).

● Development and implementation of district/school strategy maps focusing on high quality instruction. Professional Learning for Administrators regarding District priorities including calibration of high quality instruction throughout the district.

● The PK-12 Social Studies Curriculum was written and approved.

● PK-12 Music Curriculum (Coming April).● PK-12 Science Curriculum (Coming June).

● Teacher Leadership Academy 2 (TLA2) Cohort enrolled contained 41 teachers.

● Teacher Leadership Academy (TLA) Lab sites started in the schools led by our teachers.

● Region 14 developed a partnership with Flanders Nature Center, the town libraries as well as the historical societies from Bethlehem and Woodbury to begin creating assured experiences for Region 14 students in Social Studies and Science.

● Integration of preschool classes at each elementary school.

● Human Resources helped realize efficiencies and maximized staffing (reduce 21.05 FTEs while still adding courses and programming).

● 60.5% of the staff will have participated in the Region 14 Teacher Leadership Academy.
