USC/Jefferson Metro Station HubThe site chosen is located near the University of Southern California near a busy area of Los Angeles. This site would benefit from a transportation hub because it is fairly close to corporate Los Angeles and the majority of business people take advantage of public transportation. This area is heavily populated with college students who a huge percentage of own a bicycle. The hub would encourage the bike rental for outsiders coming into this area, whether it is to visit or for USC events. There will be a park and ride area where people can leave their cars and continue with public transportation whether it is a bicycle, the use of a rickshaw, or the metro line adjacent to the site.

The hub is covered by an open air pavillion which also becomes its own structure. As the structure comes down onto the ground, it develops seperate spaces where different programs begin to form. The pavillion will show an emphasis on the corner of Figueroa and Jefferson which is the most important intersection in the site. The programs are organized around the site, leaving space for a green gathering area located in the center of the hub.

Shadow Hills Riding ClubClassroom PavillionConcept: Comfort and Privacy

For this project there was involvement with a real client who was looking for design ideas to expand andimprove histherapeutic horse ranch. For this to take o, in depth site analysis needed to be done. After reviewing and studying thecomposite site analysis layers, the nextstep was to develop a strategy fordesigning a Program and ConceptualSite Design for the expansion needs of theentire facility. Specic buildings and locations on the site were chosen for further functional design work.

The classroom space being used by the club, even though it was functional, was not anywhere near comfortable or did it follow with accessability regulations. For this specic design, the immediatesurrounding was taken into consideration, therefore the sense of an outdoor pavillionwas kept. Installation of appropriate classroom materials was eminent and wasincorporated as well.

For the nal design, It was decided thatthe pavillion would maintain open. With the nature that aurrounds it, it would be best to keep it that way. A double curtainlayer was decided. The inner layer wouldhave pockets for classroom use and wouldbe of a wool like material. The exteriorlayer would be of a more dense plastic material that would serve for privacy andprotection from any dust, trash, or animalfrom coming into the pavillion.

The pleating method is expressed in the buildings skin system which wraps around the building, creating habitable spaces as well as the ramp system itself.

The buildings program is organized in an interlocking manner. The program spaces and the VIP Parking areas are stacked on top of each other, combining these in one space per say. The circulation of the site overall is developed similarly. The core of the building is an open space which holds all major circulation of the building. There are 3 main ramps that help circulate cars through the VIP parking areas and 3 more ramps that serve for pedestrian circulation when not being used by the fashion showroom as catwalks.

There are 2 main entrances, one from Main Street and one from 9th Street, which invite the general public into the building. Since the parking that is layered with the program is exclusively for VIP only, there is an underground parking area designated for the general visitors.

The skin design for this project was highly inuenced and developed from the analysis and manipulation study of thepleating methods used in Alexander McQueens dress design. The specic dress used is one of his Fall 2008 garments.

    PLEATING PATTERN

Pleating is a technique used by folding repeatedly and as you double the fabric upon itslef it is securely pinned in place to have

these ruing patterns. This method is used through out the dress with the exception of the middle core of the dress which is used to

hold the entire thing in place using compression.

The facility proposed, assists homeless in training and preparation to integrate into society over a 9-12 month period program. Its main target clientele are men and women seeking to rehabilitate from their daily unhealthy routine. In the facility, we have external aid for those with chronic disadvantages, such as; Mental illnesses, and Substance abuse. 100% of the population coming into the facility in search of help has already been through some type of detoxication process. These people will still be divided into dierent outreach levels depending on their score from a mandatory assesment test given at the beginning. Some of the methods of rehabilitation included in all of the outreach programs are, receiving general education, learning basic skills, job training, and relapse prevention classes. On a daily basis, the facility will help only the 460 homeless people enrolled in the program, not including the percentage of residents living in skid row who receive nutrition given by the facilitys gourmet food trucks. The average duration that these eligible people will live on site depends on the duration of their progress in their specic outreach program. The facility will have a restaurant on site. People who have gone through the most dicult stages of their program and have managed to accomplish the dicult tasks given, will be given such trust and condence to be able to work and help in the operation of the restaurant. It will serve as a workshop and job training both, giving them self-condence at the end of the program. The restaurant includes several gourmet food trucks that cater to the people living in skid row. This serves as possible recruitment into the facility. Overall this facility consists of Dierent Phases, Dierent Levels, Dierent Treatment, and Dierent types of accomodation, The dierent types of accomodation alsodepend on the persons progress and accomplishments in their outreach program. So, as they progress from their rst phase into the second and so forth, their living condition in the facility become more comfortable and private for them.
