Dear Parents,
We are thrilled that the month of March is here and spring
is right around the corner! We are all ready for sunshine,
warm days, and outdoor recess!
It’s Science Fair time! I encourage your child to participate
if they have an interest in science or simply how things
work. I also encourage them to spend some time each week
working on the project. This is an opportunity for you to
help your child learn not only about science, but to learn
some valuable organizational skills. I know a science project
can be a daunting task, especially when the work load is not
spread out over time. If you have any questions, please do
not hesitate to ask. We are here to help. Think science!
We will be focusing on attendance for the month of March.
We will be having a “March Madness” attendance competi-
tion between classrooms. Come to school and join in the fun!
Think warm thoughts and have a great March!

SECOND GRADE NEWS
Language Arts
This month, we will continue to focus
on words with long vowel sounds with irreg-
ular spelling patterns. We will also work
with digraphs (th/wh/sh/ph/ch) and diph-
thongs (au/aw, ou/ow, oi/oy).
We will continue looking at informa-
tional texts and the non-fiction text features
that help us read these texts. Students will
also be looking for context clues in order to
identify the author’s message in a text.
Ideas to discuss at home:
Recount a story or fable and discuss the
meaning or lesson taught in the story.
How can we compare two different versions
of the same story?
How can we identify the author’s message
or overall theme of a text?
What connections can you make to a text
personally or in history?
In writing, students will continue
forming opinions and giving reasons to sup-
port their thoughts and feelings. They will
also be writing to persuade and working
through the entire writing process during
this quarter!
Coming Up
3/2: SCHOOL CLOSED for Students- Parent/Teacher Conferences 3/6: Spring Class Picture Day 3/29 & 3/30 & 4/2: SCHOOL CLOSED for Spring Break
Math
As we finish out the third quarter, students
will be jumping back into place value and
then telling time.
Students will be working on the following
standards in class;
2.NBT.B.6 Add up to four two-digit numbers
using strategies based on place value and
properties of operations.
2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract within 1000,
using concrete models or drawings and strat-
egies based on place value, properties of oper-
ations, and/or the relationship between addi-
tion and subtraction; relate the strategy to a
written method. Understand that in adding
or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds
or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens
and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is
necessary to compose or decompose tens or
hundreds.
2.NBT.B.9 Explain why addition and sub-
traction strategies work, using place value
and the properties of operations.
2.MD.C.7 Tell and write time from analog
and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes,
using a.m. and p.m.
*Please continue to work with math facts
and practicing telling time on digital and
analog clocks.

Reading is Fun!
This month, we are half-way finished
with the 3rd marking period. We will
be learning all about natural disas-
ters like earthquakes, volcanoes, tsu-
namis and tornadoes in reading. This is a very
exciting topic for students. Try checking out
books on these topics at your local library. 3rd
grade teachers highly recommend Storm Run-
ner!
At this point in the school year, third graders
are expected to answer higher level questions.
Try asking your child these questions after
reading at night?
What is the moral of the story?
What message is the author trying to
portray to the reader?
What would be another good title for
this book?
How and why did the character
change in the story?
Third graders are text detectives! While dis-
cussing the story, please ask your child to look
back in the text to prove his/her answer!
Writing Your third grader is learning about how to
state an opinion with various audiences. Try
asking your child his/her opinion on topics that
they are interested in. Try these:
Iphone or Android
Instagram or Snapchat
Playstation or Xbox
Math
This month, we will continue learning about
fractions! Fractions are everywhere. What frac-
tion of people in your house are girls? What
fraction of days begin with a T. Ask your child
to tell you all that they know about fractions.
Please continue practicing multiplication facts
with your child daily! We still have 1 more
drawing where your child has the opportunity
to win a Kindle Fire!
Science Projects
Please continue working with your child on
their science fair project. We look forward to
seeing their creativity hard at work.

Arlington Echo Reminder
As a reminder, 4th graders at Marley Elementary have a wonderful opportunity to attend an
overnight field trip to Arlington Echo.
The fourth grade team has met with the Arlington Echo coordinates and we have received 2
separate dates, due to our large grade level size.
• May 2 - 3— Mr. Dickson's, Ms. Pedri, and Ms. Haynie's classes will participate
• May 3 - 4— Mrs. White's and Ms. Wood's classes will participate.
We need a great deal of volunteers who are willing to chaperone or teach outdoor education
lessons (lessons are easy and fun to learn and teach).
We also need parents who are willing to spend the night. All overnight chaperones must be
fingerprinted in order to attend the trip. This information can be found on the website and fin-
gerprinting occurs at the Anne Arundel County Board of Education.
Annapolis Field Trip - Monday April, 16 2018
The 4th grade will be taking a field trip to Annapolis for a walking tour of Historic Annapolis
and Naval Academy, along with a boat ride on the Chesapeake Bay. Forms have been sent
home and we look forward to a great day of learning about Maryland's State Capital.
Thank you!

February is here, and the cold and flu season continues. Please remem-
ber how important rest and good nutrition are to fight off and prevent illness.
If your child is having flu or cold symptoms associated with
a fever, they must be kept home from school a full 24 hours
after the fever subsides. They may return to school only after
they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing
medication. If your child is sick with a fever, it is also very important
to increase their fluid intake to prevent dehydration.
To prevent the spread of germs, always encourage your child to
cover their mouth or nose with their sleeve when coughing or
sneezing. Frequent hand washing is also the best way to spread
and prevent infection.
These simple health habits go a long way in helping to keep your family
healthy!!!

REGARDING ALL
BIRTHDAYS
In regards to all birthdays—we here at Marley Elementary ask
that if you wish to supply cupcakes for your child on his or her
birthday that you only bring in the very small bite size ones.
We also ask that be the only thing you supply as far as food and
drinks go. With our school size and limited time for lunch we
feel this is all we can accommodate. You are welcome to sup-
ply pencils or a small like object instead if you like.
Thank you for all your understanding and if you
have questions please feel free to contact the office
