The highest season of our church year is Lent: the 40 days of preparation for Holy Week and Easter. It commemorates Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness of temptation, trial and testing (Matthew 4:1-11). It was there that Jesus chose His way and confirmed His calling to be Savior of the world. Christians believe that Jesus was “fully God and fully human,” the greatest mystery of our faith as Christians. At the center of this holy mystery is Jesus’ qualification to be the unique and unparalleled Savior and Lord of our lives. What does this mean for us and our Lenten journey this year? Poet T.S. The same, and more, can be the impact of Lent as we “follow Jesus” in the choice He made when “two roads diverged, and He chose the one less traveled by…and that has made all the difference” (Robert Frost). Life choices. To frame this resolve will be our Lenten Sunday morning worship, as we reflect upon “Life Changing Encounters with Jesus”—the spiritual journey of Nicodemus the Pharisee (John 3), the woman at the well (John 4), the man who was blind from birth (John 9), the deep grief of Mary and Martha over the death of their brother Lazarus (John 11), the conflicted Pontius Pilate as he condemns the Son of God (Matthew 27), and the inconsolable grief turned into inexpressible joy of Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb (John 20). To remind us of our resolve to make a new beginning with God will be the Wednesday evening Soup Suppers, Worship Service, and Discussions that will be offered from 6:30-8:15 March 8 - April 5. A personal faith story each week will be accompanied by songs and prayers, then table discussions of the scripture for the following Sunday will heighten our expectation of the new work our Lord wants to do in our lives. Worship ReflectionsFrom Pastor Dave

LENT begins on Ash Wednesday March 1We resolve to make a new beginning with God, 7:30 - 8:30 a.m., 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. we receive ashes upon our foreheads.

Poet T.S. Eliot has written of “the accumulated memories of annual emotion,” referring to the power of Christmas in our lives each year. The same, and more, can be the impact of Lent as we “follow Jesus” in the choice He made when “two roads diverged, and He chose the one less traveled by…and that has made all the difference” (Robert Frost). Life choices.

To frame this resolve will be our Lenten Sunday morning worship, as we reflect upon “Life Changing Encounters with Jesus”—the spiritual journey of Nicodemus the Pharisee (John 3), the woman at the well (John 4), the man who was blind from birth (John 9),

the deep grief of Mary and Martha over the death of their brother Lazarus (John 11), the conflicted Pontius Pilate as he condemns the Son of God (Matthew 27), and the inconsolable grief turned into inexpressible joy of Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb (John 20).

Let us come together to make this Lent a true spiritual milestone in our life and faith.

Dr. Gary Burge will preach on March 26

Professor of New Testament at Wheaton College since 1992, Dr. Burge has a unique grasp of the Middle East, a passionate faith in Christ, and a remarkable background. When Lebanon’s tragic civil war broke out in the early ‘70s he was a student at the American University in Beirut studying international relations and Islam.

After graduation from Fuller Theological Seminary in California in 1978, he received his Ph.D. in New Testament at King’s College in Aberdeen, Scotland. Over the years, his extensive travels and research have taken him to Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Israel and the occupied territories of the West Bank. Dr. Burge’s friendships with many Palestinian Christian pastors have given him a unique perspective on the faithful witness of a suffering Church in a land under occupation.

Dr. Burge will be preaching on the Lenten Sermon Series “Life Changing Encounters with Jesus.” From 9:45-10:45 he will lead an interactive class that will take the Gospel Lesson deeper as it opens our eyes to the presence of Christ for us today. Set aside this important date in your calendars. Come and be inspired to a new level of faith.

Stephen Ministry Corner

Why Stephen (lay) ministry?Because the Bible says so. When Jesus call us to be disciples, he also makes us members if his body, the church. As arms and hands of God, we are called to do the work of God in the world (1cor 12).

Because congregations need it. Churches are searching for ways to serve the needs of their members and improve their ability to provide nurturing, healing, and caring environment for their members.

Because pastors need it. Pastors are looking for ways to provide quality care to more members.

Because Christian lay persons need it. Christian lay persons look to their congregation to provide effective ministry that touches them deeply when they are hurting. Christian lay persons look to their congregations for the opportunity to become more meaningfully involved in ministry and to activate their discipleship.

The Nest by Cynthia D-Aprix is our book selection for the month of March. A novel about four adult siblings, their shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives and what happens when it is put in jeopardy. This is a story about the power of family, friendship, the ways we depend upon one another and the ways we let one another down. Join us on Thursday, March 23rd for good discussion and great fellowship. Questions? Please contact Mary Kinsey 630-668-5147 x20 or [email protected].

Cancer-Now What? This is the title of a new book written by Dr. Kenneth C Haugk, founder and executive director of Stephen Ministries. The givers of this book may in-clude friends, coworkers, other family members, pastors, medi-cal professionals, businesspeo-ple, professionals of all kinds, and others who may at least sometimes encounter those dealing with cancer-and who would be in a position to give this book to them as a way of offering help and support. The Stephen Ministry team is ordering a copy for the library. It also can be ordered from the Stephen Ministry web site: www.stephenministries.org for $19.

First Pres Preschool is happy to welcome Bongi, an inter-national exchange student from South Africa, into our class-rooms. Bongi is studying graduate level classes in early childhood education at the College of DuPage. She comes to First Pres Preschool one day a week and helps out in multiple classrooms. She is fast becoming a favorite with our children and teachers!

The Terrific Twos are spending March on an Eric Carle lit-eracy unit. Each week they will be reading a different Eric Carle book and creating unique projects to go along with it. This month we continue to have guest readers come into our Twos classroom to read a story and share our snack with us. The children love having their Mom or Dad or special person in their life share in their classroom time with them.

The three year olds are learning nursery rhymes this month and continuing to strengthen their cutting skills. You may wonder why we continue to teach nursery rhymes to our three year olds. Like many opportunities for learning in pre-school, Mother Goose provides us with a way to introduce early literacy and pre-reading skills through what children consider as ‘play’. One of the foundations required to begin reading is phoneme awareness. Phoneme awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate sounds and rhyme. Children who are exposed to nursery rhymes, songs, and rhyming books from birth through the preschool years become pho-nemically aware naturally with this exposure.

Our four year olds are spending their final month on the pho-nics unit. Their classroom is filled with letter and sound proj-ects. Each week, the children are recognizing upper/lower case letters, sounding out the letter sounds, and writing up-per/lower case letters. Every week for the last few months, every activity during their center time, their songs, their stories, their snacks, and their projects have all centered around one letter. According to the National Reading Panel and the national Early Literacy Panel, there are four essen-tial components of early literacy: Comprehension, Phono-logical Awareness, Alphabetic Principle, and Concepts of Print. We weave these four components into everything we do during the phonics unit. This year we have added a few new letters. After spring break, the children will be sharing their new discoveries about phonics with their parents during a special Phonics presentation.

Our Pre-K class has been busy building words and working on pre-literacy skills this month. In February, we sponsored a PJ Reading Night for the children and their parents. This is an annual favorite for the children. They love coming to school in the evening in their PJs (and seeing their teachers in their PJs!). We spend the evening reading beloved Laura Numeroff books, working on fun center activities, and creat-ing a special treat. This month the Pre-K class will be learn-ing about the weather, the water cycle, rainbows and mixing colors. They will also be celebrating Dr. Suess’ birthday on March 2nd. Happy Birthday Dr. Suess!

Our KG Enrichment class finished exploring the ancient and fascinating culture of China in February. They learned about the Chinese flag, Kindergarten in China, and the Chinese New Year. They had fun during center time painting Chinese characters, trying out chopsticks, and making Chinese drag-ons and masks. Now they are studying Spain; journeying through this country’s rich history learning about its King and Queen, Spanish explorers, flamenco dancing, bull fighting, and Picasso.

WF High School News

Last month we had a blast in the snow at Timber-Lee, and experienced a great worship time and excellent speaker. We talked about receiving gifts, and the great gift of Jesus’ love that is not to be put on the shelf and admired, but is meant to be opened, explored and enjoyed, and then re-gifted to others. We were challenged to find new ways to explore and engage Jesus in order to deepen our faith and share love with others.

Here’s what’s coming up:

Confirmation Class Begins…March 5! 8th Graders – We will have a special blessing for you during worship at both services, and we’ll get started on the first lesson at 10:45 in SH104. See you then! Parents of Confirmands Small Group – Your class begins March 5, too! Grab your coffee and join this group in the dining room to learn a little bit about what your students are talking about in confirmation class, and grow as a support group for each other as your students enter high school! This small group will be facilitated by Julee Lockard and Stacy Chojnacki.

Chicago DOOR Mission Trip, March 10-12. Please pray for our safety and spiritual growth this weekend! Friday, April 14, 4:30pm Watch the Passion of the Christ Movie & attend worship.

Happy March! The hope of spring and warmth is just around the corner, but my heart has been warmed throughout the winter by the love and support that I felt from you, the church family, at our fundraiser at the end of January! It was so fun to see Stewart Hall full of your happy faces, and to hear all of the lively conversations taking place around the room. The high school youth had a blast serving you! I hope you got a chance to say hi to some of them as they bustled around the room.

Thanks to your generosity, we netted about $3400 toward our summer mission trip, which put us a little more than half way toward our fundraising goal of $6000. Your love and support of our high school youth is amazing. Thank you so much! Save the date for our next fundraiser/Koinonia coffee: Palms, Pancakes & Plants! April 9 at 10:30am. We will stuff you with pancakes & sausage, and then we will hear a presentation from Linda Wygant from the Grace Seeds Ministry, about the exciting things God is doing through them. I hope to see you there!

Join us for a 5 week Lenten study - He Chose the Nails Study Guide: What God Did to Win Your Heart - by Max Lucado (Author)

Every gift from God reveals his love, but no gift reveals his love more than the gifts of the cross. These gifts came not wrapped in paper but in passion. They were not placed around a tree but around a cross. They were not covered with ribbons but sprinkled with the blood that Christ shed on our behalf. In this five-session video Bible study, Max Lucado explores the many gifts that Christ provided to us at his crucifixion.

Breakfast starts at 7:00 a.m. next to the kitchen. Please contact [email protected] to be sure we have enough bacon for all.

Roseland “Good News” Day Care Center:We traveled to Roseland the end of January with a car filled with your donations! These included: a set of pots and pans, blankets and comforters, a large bag of dolls from a collection, children’s toys, children’s clothing, women’s and men’s clothes, household items, a crib and mattress, and a train play table! Ms Pearl was thrilled! Thank you so much for thinking of Roseland as you no longer need things!

The Christmas holidays are a busy time at the Day Care. In early December, a group from Connection Pointe Christian Church in Indiana came with supplies for the Christmas Eve hospital visits Ms Pearl makes. The group filled many gift bags of baby items for new moms in different hospitals. On Christmas Eve, Highland Christian Church from Robinson, Il., a rrived. They split into four groups and visited new moms in seven different hospitals in the Chicago area. They delivered the gift bags to the new moms and shared with them about the love of Jesus. Afterwards they came back to the Day Care and shared their experiences. There were twelve gift bags remaining.

Ms Pearl and others invited the Roseland community to a Christmas breakfast at 9:00 a.m. Christmas day. They also caroled through Roseland that day, encouraging people.

Four weeks later, a group led by Pastor Ted and Kim Marvin from Arlington Baptist College in Arlington, Texas, came to volunteer for a week. They helped at the Day Care Center for two days and then helped the moms with a clothing sale another day. The twelve remaining gift bags of baby items from the hospital visits at Christmas served as samples. This group filled many more bags of baby items. They were able to visit the hospitals again and share and witness to the new moms. This was followed by a visit to the emergency room where the students were able to pray with people who wanted to. The group returned to Texas with life long memories from their time in Roseland.

Please continue to bring your donations to the Rotunda coat room, marked “Roseland” or “Ms Pearl”. We are overwhelmed by your generosity and thank you so very much! Any questions, please call Jan Foster at 630-653-2612.
