Tenor Students in MATC Healthcare Programs
MATC offers opportunities for Tenor students get a head start toward careers in
healthcare. The Healthcare Customer Service Certificate (including Medical
Terminology, Healthcare Customer Service and Intro to Computing for
Healthcare) and Nursing Assistant Technical Diploma teach students the skills
healthcare organizations need in entry level positions. Seniors Diana Mendoza
and Gianna Ricks, completed the customer service program, fall semester, and
others will do so this spring. The Nursing Assistant program teaches hands-on
caregiving and includes a two week practicum in a nursing home. Diana
Mendoza will complete this diploma before she graduates in June. Both of these
programs fulfill requirements for healthcare degrees that allow students to
advance their careers. Aurora Hurtado began the Bilingual Dental Assistant
program last fall, and will soon begin her practicum, helping real patients in
Milwaukee clinics. Jair Muro, Dental Technician and Ryan McMillon, Emergency
Medical Technician will also earn technical diplomas this spring. Other students
who plan to pursue health related degrees are taking the required classes to
enter programs including Dental Hygiene, Physical Therapy Assistant, Registered
Nursing and Ultrasound Technician.

As we move into the second semester, it is hard to believe that the school year is over half
complete. We have seen many great activities going on inside and outside classrooms
and we look forward to another successful semester with new and exciting things
occurring.
I would like to take this time to remind parents of the importance of parental involvement
in their child’s education. Former Arizona governor Jane D. Hull once said, “At the end of
the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of
parents.” The faculty and staff at Tenor High School pledge to do everything we can for
your child to make sure that he or she is getting the best possible education. With
continued parental involvement and our commitment, we are able to give Tenor students
a quality education that will set them up for a successful future.
Our commitment to students includes providing opportunities to receive additional help
outside of classroom time. Students whose grade point average is below a 2.0 must
attend mandatory Homework Club Mondays and Thursdays after school from 3:20-4:20
PM. This time is dedicated to students who are struggling to help them improve their
grades so that they can be successful at Tenor and be prepared for MATC. If your child’s
grade point average falls below a 2.0, it is important that you make sure your student is
attending Homework Club every Monday and Thursday. Teachers are also available
before and after school for extra help. If your child is struggling in any of their classes,
please encourage them to take advantage of the opportunities provided for extra help.
Our dedication to student achievement along with strong parental involvement will
ensure student success at Tenor, MATC and beyond.
If you have questions about mandatory Homework Club, please feel free to give us a call.

Alumni Update
Since graduating from Tenor High School in
June 2014, Priscilla Tavarez has continued
her education at MATC. Having earned
her Nursing Assistant license and
completing the required courses to
petition for the Registered Nursing
Associate Degree program, Priscilla is
studying to become a nurse. She is gaining
hands-on experience through clinical
placements – last semester working with
residents in a nursing home, and this
semester at Aurora Sinai. She observes that
“it takes hard work to study and lots of
practice to master the skills” for nursing.
She advises students of the importance of
mastering basic math skills, as well as
avoiding procrastination. While academic
and professional skills are essential for
keeping patients healthy, Priscilla believes
“it is important to remember that
healthcare is a caring career.” Students
learn to work with people who have
different attitudes and backgrounds. She
observes that “nursing school is not too
easy,” but her MATC instructors are
encouraging and assure
students that “it’s tough,
but in the end it’s worth
it.”

English 10’s semester is off to an exciting and graphic (novel!) start:
we’re reading Marjane Satrapi’s critically acclaimed coming of age
novel Persepolis. In the age of Instagram, today’s teens need
stronger visual literacy skills than ever before. Through critical analysis
of Persepolis, which is written in comic book style, students will
strengthen their literacy “muscle.” Ultimately, students will create
their own comic books that reflect their coming of age.
English 11 students are creating some of the most important
documents of their young careers: a resume, cover letter,
and thank you note. Most young people don’t learn these
essential business writing skills until they’re applying for jobs
in their senior year of college. Our students will graduate
from Tenor with a professional portfolio that they can build
upon as they enter their chosen professions.

9th grade earth and space science class students have been out of this world this year!
This semester they are starting with the make-up of the atmosphere and working their
way into outer space. Currently, students are completing a project on the layers of the
atmosphere and will be quickly moving into cloud identification and space exploration!
Earth and space science students are really going to infinity and beyond this semester!
In biology, students have been very busy as well at the start of this spring semester.
Students started with meiosis and heredity. They will soon be figuring out blood types and
their own genetic makeup!
Environmental science students have also been busy analyzing
and compiling their own views on the global warming
controversy. Students are currently identifying both sides of the
debate and will soon write their own scientific stance through a
research report! Things are sure heating up in the science
courses!

Geometry: At the start of the semester we began a unit on
circles. Students are completing investigations to learn of
the many properties related to circles. Some of these
properties are the relationships that happen between
tangent lines, chords, central and inscribed angles, and
circumference with their circle. We have completed the
investigations in a few ways. At the start, students were using an interactive online applet
from Geogebra to discover properties of tangent lines and chords. Students had to use
their observation skills and deductive reasoning to make conclusions and complete
conjectures. Coming up we will be learning about the relationship between the
circumference of a circle and its diameter.
Algebra 2: This semester we started a trigonometry unit. Students had a brief introduction
to some of the trigonometric functions; sine, cosine, and tangent. Our work in this unit will
take the students’ understanding of these functions and their reciprocals, cosecant,
secant, and cotangent, much further. Students will learn about inverse tangent, the
different transformations of the graphs, trig identities, and solving trig equations.
