Vol 5; Issue 3 March 2015
Cabrinian The
Newsletter of the St. Frances Cabrini Fraternity of the OFS
Gatherings are at 1:30 PM on 3rd Sunday of the month.
St. Nicholas Byzantine Church, in St. George Hall (back building)
The March gathering will be on March 8th (a change for this month only)
Visitors are always welcome, and expected.
Very Important Notices
Due to our Annual Lenten Fraternity Retreat on the third weekend of the March,
our March fraternity gathering will be on the second Sunday, the 8th of March.
This is also the day we start daylight savings time. You will need to move your
clock forward by one hour, at 2 AM on Sunday morning (or before you go to bed). If you
forget to change your clocks, you may be late for Sunday Mass, and you may also late
for our gathering.
The February gathering was cancelled because of the bitter weather, but the fraternity’s
expenses continue. Please send your Common Fund offering for February to Bill Marshall or put
it in the collection during the March with your March donation
The national, regional and local fraternities all have expenses. In our fraternity we have
the newsletter, and a monthly donation to St. Nicholas Byzantine Church for the meeting room.
Fr. Vit, who travels a distance to be with us as our Spiritual Assistant, needs to be reimbursed for
his travel, and the time he spends with us. Various items are needed throughout the year for
formation classes, for Professions, binders and forms for each member of the fraternity and so
forth. We also help support a family in India and assist with fees for a seminarian.
Both the regional and the local fraternities are very frugal with money, and members at
both levels donate a large number hours of their time in a variety ways. Their out of pockets ex-
penses are rightfully reimbursed.
If you want God to hear your prayers, hear the voice of the poor. If you wish God to anticipate your wants, provide those of the needy without waiting for them to ask you. Especially anticipate the needs of those who are ashamed to beg. To make them ask for alms is to make them buy them. St. John Villanoa

If you are in urgent need of prayer, please contact the person(s) scheduled for Eucharistic Adoration.
There are people in our fraternity who cannot commit to a specific day/time for Eucharistic Adoration, but who
are in Adoration when possible, and will also pray for those members with special needs.
Eucharistic Adoration is a beautiful, peaceful time spent with our Savior. Let us avail ourselves of this very
precious gift by spending some quiet and holy time with our Lord. During this season of Lent may be reflect on
the great sacrifice Jesus made for us.
It is that time again—-the Regional Per Capita is due. If you haven’t given it yet,
please do it as soon as possible. It is $38.00 for each active and excused professed
member and candidate. It helps support the St. Maximilian Kolbe Regional and NAFRA.
You may elect to withhold the $1.00 of that which to FAN [Franciscan Action Network].
However, the Region must cover that amount out of the Regional treasury.
If you cannot afford the Fair Share, or only part of it, please talk with any one of
the fraternity council members—-it will be handled discreetly. We are a family, and fam-
ilies take care of each other.
If you are able to afford an extra dollar or two when you turn in your Fair Share
the extra amount can be used to help cover the amount for those who may be experi-
encing some financial difficulties. Thank you for your compassion and understanding.

Our Fraternity is blessed to welcome Eileen & Rick Dunlap, in joining their fellow Candidates, Lucy & Larry McNutt,
Mary Beth Garvin, and Susan Kramer, who are all in Formation with the St. Frances Cabrini Fraternity. During the Septem-
ber, 2013 gathering, at Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted, we celebrated the Rite of Admission to Candidacy
with Eileen & Rick and the other Candidates, as if it were yesterday! Now, the beautiful day is approaching, on May 30,
2015, at Little Flower Catholic Church, in North Canton, our Fraternity will be blessed, in celebrating with our sisters and
brothers, as they make their Permanent Profession as Secular Franciscans. I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to get to
know Eileen & Rick, and would like to share their beautiful story & Calling to the Secular Franciscan Order.
Eileen & Rick are parishioners of Little Flower Catholic Church, in North Canton, Ohio. Eileen Teresa was named
after St. Therese, “The Little Flower,” born of Irish parents. Rick is of English & German descent. Eileen is from Michigan
and Rick a Canton, Ohio native. He was in the US Air force and a graduate of Kent State. He taught Special Education &
Math for the Jackson Schools, for 22 yrs. Eileen teaches IRISH DANCE & Rick, DJ’s with his love for music. Eileen and
Rick are active in their Parish and local community; love attending Eucharistic Adoration, & daily Mass; Bible study, and
filling in for CCD. Rick is a member of the Little Flower Catholic Church choir, with our brother, Roberto. The choir has to
sound heavenly with their two voices! Their daughter, Makenna, attends St. Michael’s Catholic School, so they support
that community as well. Rick, also, volunteers in the office there.
As a hobby, they love to travel and visit shrines with the family. Their latest visits were to several shrines in Montreal
& Quebec. The prior year they traveled to California, visiting several of the Franciscan Missions and a few wineries!! Ei-
leen, also, enjoys getting involved in ANY construction work; building, electric & plumbing projects. She enjoys reading, but
since it puts her to sleep she likes to listen to podcasts (daily readings & books on tape). And disclosed, “I’m an avid Cath-
olic Radio listener & some might say, I’m a Fr. John Riccardo podcast groupie fanatic.” Rick enjoys a good game of golf!
Eileen disclosed, “Working… and while taking college courses, in my 20’s, my two girls raised me!” After praying the
St. Joseph novena for a foster father for her two girls, (one in 2nd and the other 4th grade) she stated, “I met Rick, the most
wonderful man in the world!” Rick shared their romantic engagement story: while at the Michigan vs. Notre Dame game,
Rick had a plane fly over the stadium to pop the question. It was a win win event, Michigan won, and she said, “Yes!”
They are busy enjoying time with the three girls, Kala, Kristin and Makenna.
When asked what are you willing to bring to the Secular Franciscan Order? Eileen responded, “I can only bring ME a
sinner, who wants to try REALLY HARD to become a saint. AND, if I can be so vain, I would like to cash in partial credit for
bringing my husband, a saint, and the most wonderful man in the world!!!” Rick stated, “I am not perfect, I’m a sinner and
like that as a Secular Franciscan we can do charitable things. I, also, bring my since of humor, open mind, sincerity, com-
passion, and hopefully MUSIC! Eileen and Rick bring much to our Franciscan Community, and we are so blessed to have
them in our Franciscan family & Church!
Eileen disclosed her Religious background; 12 yrs of Catholic school and a “WONDERFUL example of faith & love in
my parents and Aunt Catherine-my confirmation name and sponsor!!” Beyond Catholic schools, she took part in Adult for-
mation through the “Youngstown Diocese,” taught 1st grade CCD, involved in the Confirmation and RCIA Program, at St.
Louis Parish, in Louisville, where Rick and Eileen were married, after their annulments. Both, Rick and Eileen have been
preparing and offering so much to their faith and the Secular Franciscan way of life.
They received the Call to the Secular Franciscan Order in several ways. Eileen disclosed that she was VERY frus-
trated at first that she was a Cradle Catholic participating in parishes and attending Mass, all her life, and she knew NOTH-
ING of the lay people in any of the orders. “WHY NOT? I guess it wasn’t my time yet. Or my ears were deaf?” Shortly after
Eileen and Rick finished the St. Louis De Montfort Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary (piggy backed with the 33
days to Morning Glory Consecration) their friend, DEBBIE, invited them to a Franciscan “Come and See.” They were at Ado-
ration. Eileen and Rick had been discussing what path their prayer life would be taking now that they finished the “Total
Consecration.” This was Divine Intervention: #1.

#2: “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” which translated means TEACHER.
“Where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was stay-
ing, and they stayed with Him that day. Eileen pointed out, “In Lectio Divina, last Sunday, at our Gathering, the word STAY
came on my heart. I really felt it was God telling me I’m supposed to stay the course in the Franciscan way!”
#3: “I was reading this letter in the TAU.”
Jesus Never Invites Us To Failure!
“But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save
me!’ Immediately, Jesus stretched out His hand and caught Peter, and said to him, ‘O you of little faith, why did you
doubt?’” Matthew 14:26-31
Jesus Never Invites Us To Failure!
When Jesus called Matthew from being a tax-collector, He did not invite him to failure. When Jesus called Andrew,
Peter, James and John to ‘Follow me!’ He did not invite them to follow Him to failure. So when Jesus said to Peter, ‘Come.’
He did not invite him to come and sink. Where’s our faith? Don’t we all know by now that Jesus really does have the love
and the mercy to help and to save one more sinner like me and you? Doesn’t He?
What have we not understood about ‘Immediately Jesus stretched out His
hand’ or the very last words of the same Gospel: ‘And behold, I am with you
always, until the end of the age.’” Matthew 28:20.
What drew Eileen and Rick to the St. Frances Cabrini Fraternity? They dis-
closed that it was Debbie and Pepe and their family… Eileen stated, “I have
come to recognize them as ‘True Joy’ and bearing a special kind of ‘Peace’ I
attribute to the Holy Spirit dwelling within them. Of course, who doesn’t want
this way of life!”
What is important to them as a Secular Franciscan? “This is ever changing,
even by the minute. Sometimes it is to help me in my awareness of my little-
ness. To help move mountains, to bask in His love and other times it’s to pour
God’s love, from within me, over someone in need. It’s to just learn how much I
do not know and how much more I thirst for HIM. It’s to grab on to St. Francis’s
cords through my fellow brothers and sisters to pull me up from a dark hole. I
guess the real answer is ‘What is God’s plan for me at every moment and this becomes what is important for me.’ As ALL,
I really want to LOVE GOD more and Better!” They like all the people, of all ages, the different personalities they bring and
would hope to see more from the younger population in the future.
As you can see, Eileen and Rick have so much to bring to our Secular Franciscan Family! Praise God! They just ask that
we pray for them. Pray they “may come to BEHOLD God and to BE Love to others.”
Blessings!
Prayer Intention for the Month
This is something new for the newsletter. In each issue there will be a Prayer Intention. Due to the way
the newsletter is put out the intention will not be a “calendar” month but rather from one edition to the next.
Fraternity members are invited to submit suggestions.
Let us pray for those who have lost their lives in the “religious” war in the Middle East, executed for their faith, and the women and children who have been kidnapped and put into a tortuous form of slavery, to be abused by their captors, and the boys and young men being held against their will, to be used by the terrorists. Let us also pray for the perpetrators of these evils, that they may come to see the error of their ways, cease the fighting, release the captives and repent for their ways.
