March 2014 Quarterly Report MISSION & GOALS To create a unique, career-focused environment that inspires all students to achieve work-ready results while promoting advanced educational opportunities. Hiring faculty and staff that is invested and committed to student success.

She indicate a desire to formulate a German apprenticeship hybrid plan that would suit the US education model. Conversations have begun with Dr. Gene Yon, Director of the Mechatronics Research and Education Center (MeREC) at Southern Poly to be part of a grant being written in conjunction with the Automation Federation, which would enable us to expand our Mechatronics program to a full scale lab with remote access to all robots at SPSU. We are currently negotiating with the local Comcast public access broadcaster, WinderTV, to take over the programming for the station once the Academy opens in August 2014. The plan is to have our level 3 and 4 associates develop and maintain the programming and include live, streamed broadcasts of WBHS and AHS home football, basketball and soccer matches.

WORK READY No action at this time. BUDGET The school system continues to work on the 2014-15 budget with an expectation the Academy will be allotted approximately $500,000 in operating expenses for next fiscal year. We continue to allocate startup grant funds for marketing, travel, and research. A furniture contractor has been selected for equipping the Academy. Contrax Furnishings will be providing a turn-key solution for furniture and equipment. Marketing

The Sims Academy website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages continue to drive our efforts to get information to the public. The URL for the Academy website is http://www.simsacademyit.org, the social media accounts are all found under SimsAcademyIT.

Presentations at the local high schools and public forums continued through the first 3

months of 2014. Twelve classroom presentations, 4 public forums and a table set up at the Chamber of Commerce Non-profit celebration were part of our marketing efforts. We also produced a new video to bullet point some key points of these presentations. The video can be found at https://t.co/E5iNTuXHtZ (see attached photo)

Our marketing efforts have centered on growing all CTAE programs, not just programs

offered at the Academy. We feel the growth of all pathways will lead to the growth in multiple pathway completers and dual enrollment students.

Local media outlet, the Barrow County News, has been a wonderful resource to get our message to the public. Reporter Zac Taylor is always willing to provide space for our stories. (See attached)

EVALUATION OF S.E.E.D. PROGRAM APPLICATION NOTES FOR REVIEWER

In reviewing student applications for the S.E.E.D. Program, the following guidelines should be considered:

1. Applications should be complete. An applicant who does not fully complete the

application may lack attention to details and the willingness and desire to follow through with the details involved with business development.

2. Excellent communication skills are important in the application process. The business owner/student will have to communicate in written and oral formats with members from the local community. It important that these communications make a good impression.

3. If the business is currently in operation, consider the benefits to the business owner/student of participating in the S.E.E.D. Program. Is there room for the business to grow or is the business at a level that the business owner/student is content with.

4. Business owner/students must be highly motivated and self-starters. As students will be working without direct daily supervision in the Entrepreneurial “Business Incubator, they must prove that they have the ability to work independently.

5. An interview with the business owner/student should be part of the application process. At this interview, the application should be reviewed and any questions you have can be answered at this time. This will also give you time to evaluate the applicant’s communication skills and motivation.

The rubric on the following page should be used to evaluate the application. In a competitive situation, applicants will have to be compared to each other. Those applicants who stand out “above the crowd” should receive the “Exceeds Expectations” rating. An application that receives less than 70 points should not be considered for admission into the S.E.E.D. Program.
