Meet the Team Members Office of Sponsored Programs

Denise Axsmith David Gbur Carrie Hackett and Charlotte McDermitt

Ensuring all ACCEL events and programs run smoothly is not an easy task Lucky for us these four team members (or Four Musketeers as they

are sometimes called) make it look easy Denise David Carrie and Charlotte are essential personnel here at ACCEL and we appreciate all their hard work If you do not know them already let us take a minute to introduce each one to you

Denise Axsmith is a Research Financial Performance Manager with key responsibilities in developing Nemours Biomedical Research Departmentrsquos annual operating budget for all three sites (JacksonvillePensecola Orlando and Wilmington) She also manages the business end of the Nemoursrsquo CTR subaward Denise has worked at Nemours for the past 24 years with 21 of those years in Research

David Gbur is a Project Manager for the Value Institute with special emphasis on the Delaware Clinical and Translational Research (DE-CTR) ACCEL program He acts as a liaison handling questions and issues between researchers and program leadership from the University of Delaware and other partnering institutions assists Principal Investigators and other named personnel in daily management functions and works closely with Christiana Care Health Systemrsquos Office of Sponsored Program

and Research Finance departments This work involves developing and revising project budgets completing all new grant submission forms and paperwork obtaining price quotes as needed preparing spreadsheets and tracking monthly allowable expenditures invoicing

management completing quarterly financial reports assuring contracts and effort reporting are compliant with federal and state guidelines completing monthly estimated revenue accruals in credit and attending numerous meetings for progress updates and resolution Work is also completed with other Value Institute team members on data analyst assignments and projects as needed

Carrie Hackett is a Grants Administrator as part of the ACCEL team at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) with over 18 years of experience in grant management She administers pre-and post-award grant and contract activities in support of the collegersquos efforts to secure internal and external funding from federal state local corporate foundation and other private sources Her specialty is management of large multi-center awards such as the CTR-ACCEL

Charlotte McDermitt is the grant administrator for the DE-CTR She has been in her role as grant administrator since December 2013 Charlotte began her career at the University of Delaware in 2004 where she started at DBI before moving into an accounting role with EPSCor and INBRE grants

Meet Dr Lee Pachter of Nemours

Dr Lee Pachterrsquos research focus is on the sociocultural determinants of child health and health care His research approach is a community based collaboration addressing childhood adversity in a holistic manner He takes a life course view to understand how childhood adversity affects adult health outcomes The concept of Adverse Childhood Events (ACE) are the result of the 1995 Kaiser Permanente longitudinal study where over 17000 health care participants were surveyed Participants

were asked to recall potential childhood adverse events including

physical sexual and emotional abuse family dysfunction (domestic violence divorce) substance miss use and care giver incarcerations Dr Pachterrsquos research focus in on the social and cultural aspects of childhood health through expanded ACEs Expanded ACEs include community violence racism and bullying

One of the projects he is working on examined adverse childhood events (ACE) from a multigenerational vantage point Looking at caregiver childhood adversity and the role it plays on the second generation childrenrsquos health outcomes The results from this project are still in the data-analysis stage where they are currently running a bi-factoral analysis to explore potential additional stressors may impact childhood health We look forward to reading about the results of this and his other projects

Currently Dr Lee Pachter is the Director of Community and Clinical Integration in the Department of Pediatrics at NemoursAI duPont Hospital for Children and professor of pediatrics at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Prior to that he was professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Drexel University College of Medicine and St Christopherrsquos Hospital for Children where he was chief of the Section of General Pediatrics and associate chair for Community Pediatrics Prior to moving to St Christopherrsquos in 2010 Dr Pachter was the Associate Director of the Childrenrsquos Center for Community Research at the Connecticut Childrenrsquos Medical Center University of Connecticut School of Medicine He is a graduate of Franklin amp Marshall College where he majored in anthropology He went to medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a pediatric residency at St Christopherrsquos Hospital for Children Thereafter he completed a Fellowship in Academic General Pediatrics at the Childrenrsquos Hospital of Philadelphia under the mentorship of David Cornfield and Stephen Ludwig Dr Pachter is currently the co-chair of Philadelphia ACErsquos task force

ACCEL 5th Annual Meeting Recap

Earlier this month researchers community members Internal and External Advisory committee members along with the ACCEL leadership team gathered for the 5th Annual ACCEL meeting This yearrsquos meeting was monumental as it marked the end of 5 successful years of growth and development of clinical and translation research along with active recruitment training and professional development This past fall we successfully submitted a grant renewal and received an impact score of 2 (Outstanding) summary statement in early March As we await to hear the final word about renewal we look forward to the opportunity to continue working on translating clinical research into the community

On Sunday May 6th twenty-five researchers were in attendance Each poster presenter had the opportunity to address their peers during the posters presentation lightning round discussion which was presided over by Dr Rob Akins Director of the Professional Development Core

Monday May 7th programming began with 16 presentations from ACCELrsquos Pilot Award Program recipients These presentations featured diverse clinical research interests Dr Adam Davey presented Maternal Age Biological Age While Dr Sharon Rozovsky spoke about Novel Probes for Imaging Oxidative Stress In Vivo Both Dr Davey and Dr Rozovsky are from the University of Delaware Dominique Medaglio from Christiana Care Health Systems presented Utilizing Linked Pharmacy Claims to Understand Primary Nonadherence exploring

medication non adherence in cardiac patients Following presentations keynote speaker Dr Stuart Binder-Macleod

spoke to the audience about the Past Present and Future of ACCEL In the afternoon break session conducted by the Junior Investigators Network (JIN) focused on How to Successfully Apply for Funding presented by Kim Bailey

COLLABORATIVE TRAVEL GRANT

The ACCEL CTR Program seeks to strengthen the clinical and translational research abilities of investigators within the four ACCEL partnering institutions To that end we are pleased to announce a call for Collaborative Travel Grants allowing ACCEL investigators to visit with other institutions or allowing ACCEL institutions to invite outside investigators to visit them Investigators could

spend time at another ACCEL or non-ACCEL institution to acquire either new skills in performing clinical and translational research or to explore or strengthen research opportunities The aim of this grant is to acquire new skills strengthen research opportunities or form new collaborations Each proposal must be submitted by an investigator from one of the ACCEL partner institutions the University of Delaware Nemours Christiana Care Health System and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Investigators must hold a faculty appointment or equivalent at the time the award commences These are individuals who can independently apply for Federal or non-Federal investigator-initiated peer-reviewed Research Project Grants (RPG) Individuals holding postdoctoral fellowships or other positions that lack independent status are not eligible Up to $10000 per award (direct costs) may be requested Funds are available for travel-related expenses only (transportation accommodations and meals) No salary support is allowed for these awards Awards will be made for a six-month period This award has a rolling submission and funding will be available until all funds are expended Awardees are required to submit a final progress report within 15 days of the end of the funding period Depending on the end date of the travel they must also plan to attend the annual ACCEL Research Conference and to present their work at the annual (national or regional) NIH IDeA Conference in the summer They are also required to

JUMPSTART GRANT This grant just may help jumpstart an award

If you were a participant in a recent ACCEL Workshop or Retreat you may be eligible to submit a proposal for a new grant mechanism called a Jumpstart Grant We are offering Jumpstart Grants to teams of investigators who have completed an ACCEL-sponsored Retreat or Workshop to help them develop new clinical and translational research proposals To be eligible the PI must have participated in an ACCEL Research Retreat or Workshop from which the Jumpstart proposal has emerged Applicants may request up to $20000 for 6 months The funds may be used for investigator release time collection of preliminary data hiring consultants or holding additional retreats to help the investigators write a research grant proposal The goal of this program is to create a team which will collaboratively submit a proposal for an ACCEL pilot grant or an external grant This mechanism has a rolling submission but work must be completed by May 31 2018 Please go to wwwde-ctrorg choose Funding Opportunities from the menu tab and select Jumpstart grants to download forms and submit your proposals Each person on the proposal will need to register on the website

management completing quarterly financial reports assuring contracts and effort reporting are compliant with federal and state guidelines completing monthly estimated revenue accruals in credit and attending numerous meetings for progress updates and resolution Work is also completed with other Value Institute team members on data analyst assignments and projects as needed

Carrie Hackett is a Grants Administrator as part of the ACCEL team at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) with over 18 years of experience in grant management She administers pre-and post-award grant and contract activities in support of the collegersquos efforts to secure internal and external funding from federal state local corporate foundation and other private sources Her specialty is management of large multi-center awards such as the CTR-ACCEL

Charlotte McDermitt is the grant administrator for the DE-CTR She has been in her role as grant administrator since December 2013 Charlotte began her career at the University of Delaware in 2004 where she started at DBI before moving into an accounting role with EPSCor and INBRE grants

Meet Dr Lee Pachter of Nemours

Dr Lee Pachterrsquos research focus is on the sociocultural determinants of child health and health care His research approach is a community based collaboration addressing childhood adversity in a holistic manner He takes a life course view to understand how childhood adversity affects adult health outcomes The concept of Adverse Childhood Events (ACE) are the result of the 1995 Kaiser Permanente longitudinal study where over 17000 health care participants were surveyed Participants

were asked to recall potential childhood adverse events including

physical sexual and emotional abuse family dysfunction (domestic violence divorce) substance miss use and care giver incarcerations Dr Pachterrsquos research focus in on the social and cultural aspects of childhood health through expanded ACEs Expanded ACEs include community violence racism and bullying

One of the projects he is working on examined adverse childhood events (ACE) from a multigenerational vantage point Looking at caregiver childhood adversity and the role it plays on the second generation childrenrsquos health outcomes The results from this project are still in the data-analysis stage where they are currently running a bi-factoral analysis to explore potential additional stressors may impact childhood health We look forward to reading about the results of this and his other projects

Currently Dr Lee Pachter is the Director of Community and Clinical Integration in the Department of Pediatrics at NemoursAI duPont Hospital for Children and professor of pediatrics at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Prior to that he was professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Drexel University College of Medicine and St Christopherrsquos Hospital for Children where he was chief of the Section of General Pediatrics and associate chair for Community Pediatrics Prior to moving to St Christopherrsquos in 2010 Dr Pachter was the Associate Director of the Childrenrsquos Center for Community Research at the Connecticut Childrenrsquos Medical Center University of Connecticut School of Medicine He is a graduate of Franklin amp Marshall College where he majored in anthropology He went to medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a pediatric residency at St Christopherrsquos Hospital for Children Thereafter he completed a Fellowship in Academic General Pediatrics at the Childrenrsquos Hospital of Philadelphia under the mentorship of David Cornfield and Stephen Ludwig Dr Pachter is currently the co-chair of Philadelphia ACErsquos task force

ACCEL 5th Annual Meeting Recap

Earlier this month researchers community members Internal and External Advisory committee members along with the ACCEL leadership team gathered for the 5th Annual ACCEL meeting This yearrsquos meeting was monumental as it marked the end of 5 successful years of growth and development of clinical and translation research along with active recruitment training and professional development This past fall we successfully submitted a grant renewal and received an impact score of 2 (Outstanding) summary statement in early March As we await to hear the final word about renewal we look forward to the opportunity to continue working on translating clinical research into the community

On Sunday May 6th twenty-five researchers were in attendance Each poster presenter had the opportunity to address their peers during the posters presentation lightning round discussion which was presided over by Dr Rob Akins Director of the Professional Development Core

COLLABORATIVE TRAVEL GRANT

The ACCEL CTR Program seeks to strengthen the clinical and translational research abilities of investigators within the four ACCEL partnering institutions To that end we are pleased to announce a call for Collaborative Travel Grants allowing ACCEL investigators to visit with other institutions or allowing ACCEL institutions to invite outside investigators to visit them Investigators could

spend time at another ACCEL or non-ACCEL institution to acquire either new skills in performing clinical and translational research or to explore or strengthen research opportunities The aim of this grant is to acquire new skills strengthen research opportunities or form new collaborations Each proposal must be submitted by an investigator from one of the ACCEL partner institutions the University of Delaware Nemours Christiana Care Health System and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Investigators must hold a faculty appointment or equivalent at the time the award commences These are individuals who can independently apply for Federal or non-Federal investigator-initiated peer-reviewed Research Project Grants (RPG) Individuals holding postdoctoral fellowships or other positions that lack independent status are not eligible Up to $10000 per award (direct costs) may be requested Funds are available for travel-related expenses only (transportation accommodations and meals) No salary support is allowed for these awards Awards will be made for a six-month period This award has a rolling submission and funding will be available until all funds are expended Awardees are required to submit a final progress report within 15 days of the end of the funding period Depending on the end date of the travel they must also plan to attend the annual ACCEL Research Conference and to present their work at the annual (national or regional) NIH IDeA Conference in the summer They are also required to

If you were a participant in a recent ACCEL Workshop or Retreat you may be eligible to submit a proposal for a new grant mechanism called a Jumpstart Grant We are offering Jumpstart Grants to teams of investigators who have completed an ACCEL-sponsored Retreat or Workshop to help them develop new clinical and translational research proposals To be eligible the PI must have participated in an ACCEL Research Retreat or Workshop from which the Jumpstart proposal has emerged Applicants may request up to $20000 for 6 months The funds may be used for investigator release time collection of preliminary data hiring consultants or holding additional retreats to help the investigators write a research grant proposal The goal of this program is to create a team which will collaboratively submit a proposal for an ACCEL pilot grant or an external grant This mechanism has a rolling submission but work must be completed by May 31 2018 Please go to wwwde-ctrorg choose Funding Opportunities from the menu tab and select Jumpstart grants to download forms and submit your proposals Each person on the proposal will need to register on the website
