Setting the stage for quality housing and sound neighborhoods has been one of my top priorities as Mayor. Housing is at the center of creating a clean, healthy, and beautiful City on the Move. In the last few years, we developed a comprehensive strategy designed to increase homeownership, property care, and now, quality housing. We are actively pursuing amenities and opportunities that create quality neighborhoods, and we are building confidence in South Salt Lake’s housing market. Our strongest effort so far has been Community Connection, the City’s award-winning neighborhood revitalization campaign. Since 2011, we have worked to transform three neighborhoods with the help of 5,500 volunteers, 36,000 volunteer hours, and almost $500,000 worth of donated labor and materials on housing and neighborhood projects across the city. Most recently, a storm water detention area was transformed into the McCall Park and playground, using volunteer labor and surplus materials. Community Connection is a cost effective and innovative program to improve our neighborhoods. The next steps in our strategy include looking at ways to foster homeownership in our community. We are actively pursuing vacant and abandoned homes in need of repair and working with community partners to restore and occupy these homes. A good neighborhood needs good schools, and we are continually looking to improve educational opportunities in our city. Our neighborhood centers and afterschool and recreation programs are valued amenities in our neighborhoods, and we are working to ensure they continue to effectively serve our residents. South Salt Lake is now home to two charter schools, Alianza Academy and The Utah International Charter School. Last year, we adopted new residential design standards to ensure that new construction in our neighborhoods is quality, attractive, functional, and compatible with existing neighborhoods. New construction should support and enhance walkable neighborhoods, and encourage long-term residency. Last year, we added over 30 new single-family homes, many of which met the new standards. This year, we are adding 60 townhomes along 700 West near 3800 South, which will be part of a larger mixed-use neighborhood. We anticipate many more new housing units in the next few years, particularly along the Streetcar Corridor and in South Salt Lake’s new downtown. Community meetings will be announced for each proposal. I encourage you to get involved! You are at the heart of our strong and vibrant neighborhoods, and I look forward to hearing from you as we work together to make them even better. In its fourth year, South Salt Lake Urban Livability Depart-ment’s Community Connection is a nationally recognized strategic initiative that targets a specific South Salt Lake neighborhood to focus resources and volunteers. The Community Connection neighborhood to be served in 2014 is the area surrounding the Central Park Community Center. The project will run from April through October 2014.

“The Community Connection Central Park Neighbor-hood Project aims to improve the safety, look, and feel of the neighborhood, to stabilize the housing stock, and to strengthen education and youth outcomes,” says Urban Livability Department Director Glenn Smith. “The goal of the project is to improve community safety by designing and implementing effective, comprehensive approaches to ad-dressing crime within the neighborhood as part of a broader strategy to advance neighborhood revitalization through cross-sector community-based partnerships.”

Community Connection involves many partners, including K2 Church, RAIN Foundation, United Way of Salt Lake, South Salt Lake residents, the City of South Salt Lake, Salt Lake County Community Development Block Grants, Code Enforcement, South Salt Lake Police Department, Granite School District, Community Development Corporation of Utah (CDCU), Assist, Zion’s Bank, Comcast, SL County Refugee Services, Latinos in Action, and AmeriCorps.

Here are three exciting things going on at Granite Park Junior High in South Salt Lake:

AVID program – In 2009, Granite Park was selected to be one of 20 pilot schools world wide to implement the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) college-readiness program. The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students succeed in a rigorous curriculum designed to lead them down a college preparatory path.

Tumaini Welcome & Transition Center – This two week transitional program assists K-12 newcomers who are enrolling in a US school for the first time. The curriculum includes oral language instruction, school culture, literacy, numeracy, computers, and collaborative learning.

Focus on the future – Wherever you are in Granite Park, you will see decorations, banners, and posters that remind students and staff about the importance of preparing for college, career, and life. Some of the most compelling examples are posters that feature a photo of a past or present student and a quote about their career/academic goals.

GRIZZLY CORNER

teer event in the country. “In 2012, over 800 people volunteered in South Salt Lake,” says South Salt Lake Urban Livability Director Glenn Smith. “Together we worked on planting community gardens, beautified schools, made improvements to our community centers, residential clean up and much more.”

South Salt Lake Celebrates Grand Opening of Carlisle Place Community

Hamlet Homes hosted a Grand Opening celebration for the opening of two model homes at its newest townhome community, Carlisle Place, in South Salt Lake at the intersection of 700 West and Carlisle Ave. (3800 South). The event was held February 7-8, 2014. “We are thrilled to introduce the affordable and beautifully designed townhomes of Carlisle Place,” said John Aldous, President of Hamlet Homes. “As Hamlet’s 36th community since our founding in 1994, we believe Carlisle Place not only appeals to a broad demographic of homebuyers, but also reflects our ongoing commitment to developing high-quality, value-priced communities that provide homebuyers with a superior experience.”

Carlisle Place is a 46-unit townhome neighborhood that follows in the success of another Hamlet Homes townhome development in the city—Waverly Station located at 3750 S. West Temple. The Salt Lake Tribune reported

that the target buyer for the Carlisle Place development is “young single professionals, newlyweds, couples with small children as well as empty nesters looking to

scale down” (Feb 6, 2014). “This is a great owner-occupied development that will add a stable homeownership base to an otherwise rental area of the City,” says South Salt Lake Community Development Director Michael Florence. “We welcome this new neighborhood and look forward to welcoming new residents of South Salt Lake.”

Hamlet has named its newest community ‘Carlisle Place’ and named a new street, Kirkbridge Avenue, in commemoration of the nearby towns that were only accessible via the railway running through Carlisle, Scotland.

Help for Home Repairs: City of South Salt LakeLow Interest Loan Program

Do you need help fixing your roof or other home repairs? The City of South Salt Lake provides low interest loans to low and moderate income homeowners for making critical repairs to maintain their homes for longer use, and to address health, safety, and code issues.

Example repairs include, but are not limited to, improving attic insulation, widening a doorway to accommodate a wheelchair, bringing electrical systems up to code, replac-ing leaking roofs, and repairing or replacing plumbing and sewer lines.

Community Development Corporation of Utah (CDCU) manages the City of South Lake Home Improvement Program. They help homeowners develop work plans, solicit three competitive bids, present the project to a loan committee and oversee construction. The maximum loan amount is $15,000 with a 3% interest rate to be repaid over ten years. For more information call 801.994.7222 or visit cdcutah.org and click on the Improve Your Home link.

Located at theColumbus Community CenterAuditorium2531 South 400 East

Everyone over 60 years old is welcome to this free community event!

Many of our partners in attendance are listed with their specificservices at right in the sidebar.

Testing 1…2…3…Spring end-of-level testing at our schools begins the end of this month and runs through May. Parents will want to be sure that children get plenty of rest, are well nourished, and are prepared to take the assessment.

The new test, the Student Assessment of Growth and Excellence, or SAGE provides the opportunity for students and anyone that is interested (parents, tutors, etc.) to take a practice test online at sageportal.org. Taking practice tests can lower student anxiety, help to ensure that students understand how to navigate the forms, and are familiar with the material.

Wendell Jakins is a man on the move – on his snowplow. He has become well-known and loved in his neighborhood for being there when the snow flies. He can be seen most snowy days helping neighbors on 500 East, Leland Ave. and 3065 South, where he lives with his wife, Julie. He has an ATV outfitted with a blade, which he drives down the block after clearing his own driveway and street, to be sure everyone can get around the block safely.

Wendell says he “just enjoys giving back a little. There are few widows on our street who can’t clear the snow themselves, so I just help out.” He served in the Army National Guard (stationed in West Jordan) for twenty-four years. During the prepara-tions for the Gulf War in 1987, he was wounded in a helicopter crash while training at Ft. Irvin in California. The Army honorably discharged him as a medically disabled veteran, and due to his injuries, he is unable to work. “But I want to find ways to oc-cupy my time, so I try to find little things I can do for my community.”

When asked about living in South Salt Lake, he said, “I moved here in 1998 and like living in South Salt Lake because it is very community-oriented toward its citizens.” He also added, “I enjoy the newsletter very much and like the new format.”

RideClear is Back, with Free Transit Passes Sponsored by UCAIRThe Utah Transit Authority and UCAIR, the Utah Clean Air Partnership invite you to help improve air quality along the Wasatch Front. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be giving away free public transportation passes through our RideClear program. These passes are good for seven consecutive days of unlimited use on UTA trains and buses between February 17 and March 31. We hope that these passes will encourage residents to leave their cars at home and opt for a more environmentally friendly form of transportation. RideClear is made possible through generous support from UCAIR, a statewide clean air partnership designed to encourage residents, businesses and communities to make small changes to improve Utah’s air. “UCAIR is focused on educating, encouraging and empowering everyone to take actions that can improve our air quality,” said Ted Wilson, UCAIR Executive Director. “We recognize that the majority of our emissions come from mobile sources, and transit can be a big part of the solution in this arena. With this program, UTA is enabling individuals to make a different choice in how they get around, which in turn improves air quality. It is extremely rewarding to be able to support such a program.” To promote the use of public transportation for improved air quality, RideClear passes will be given away at UTARideClear.com and select locations over the next several weeks. To find out when a new batch of cards has been released, follow us on Facebook and Twitter. RideClear passes are good for seven days after the first day of use. A maximum of two cards per household will be distributed over the course of the RideClear promotion.
