After a summer season celebrating Shakespeare as the world’s playwright, we look at what was happening elsewhere in the world during Shakespeare’s lifetime, alongside a new family show and a production of one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies. The season opens with Desmond Barrit returning to the company to play Falstaff in a production of The Merry Wives of Windsor directed by Phillip Breen. In 2010 we opened Matilda The Musical, in 2011 The Heart of Robin Hood, and this year the Royal Shakespeare Theatre will play host to Russell Hoban’s magical classic The Mouse and his Child. The book has been adapted for the stage by Tamsin Oglesby and will be directed by Paul Hunter who delighted audiences of all ages with our recent Young People’s version of The Comedy of Errors. In the Swan Theatre we turn our attention to China, Russia and Italy during Shakespeare’s lifetime in a season under the banner, A World Elsewhere, with three new adaptations of plays either written when he was alive, inspired by his work or addressing events that shaped his world. The season opens with Gregory Doran’s production of James Fenton’s new version of The Orphan of Zhao, a gripping revenge tragedy often described as the Chinese Hamlet. I will direct Adrian Mitchell’s adaptation of Pushkin’s Boris Godunov, which echoes Shakespeare’s Histories and Macbeth in 16th century Russia. The final play in the season sees our new RSC Writer in Residence Mark Ravenhill translating Brecht’s The Life of Galileo in a production directed by Roxana Silbert. To complement these productions we are presenting a rich programme of events, free exhibitions, education activities and workshops offering different ways to access our work. Sir John Falstaff is a man who knows how to have a good time. His only problem is that he’s short on cash, but thinks he knows where he can get it. The wealthy wives of Windsor are the ideal target for a man of his considerable charms. At least that’s how he sees it...

Shakespeare’s great comic knight rolls into the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Winter 2012 in a tale of not so desperate housewives. Desmond Barrit returns to the RSC to once again play Falstaff following his Olivier Award nominated performance in the RSC’s 2001 Henry IV Parts I & II. The production is directed by Phillip Breen whose recent credits include Sex with a Stranger (West End 2012) and A Day in the Death of Joe Egg.

A clockwork mouse and his child are discarded by children on Christmas Day. Lost and alone, they desperately want to get back home to the toyshop. Russell Hoban’s masterpiece A Mouse and his Child is the tale which has inspired a thousand wonderful stories about what really happens in the toy box when we’re not looking.

This enchanting tale of escape, the search for freedom and reunited families is adapted for the stage by Tamsin Oglesby. It is directed by Paul Hunter, Co-Artistic Director of Told by an Idiot who directed the RSC’s acclaimed Young People’s version of The Comedy of Errors.It follows in the rich tradition of family classics adapted by the RSC including The Heart of Robin Hood, Matilda The Musical, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

In the aftermath of a violent coup, an epic story of self sacrifice and revenge plays out as a young orphan discovers the shattering truth behind his childhood.

Sometimes referred to as the Chinese Hamlet, and tracing its origins to the 4th century BC, The Orphan of Zhao was the first Chinese play to be translated in the West, and was adapted by Voltaire. RSC Chief Associate Director Gregory Doran directs a new adaptation by James Fenton. Gregory most recently directed Written on the Heart and will shortly direct Julius Caesar as part of the World Shakespeare Festival

Playing in repertoire in the Swan Theatre is a trilogy of newly adapted international plays entitled A World Elsewhere, a quote from Shakespeare’s Coriolanus reminding Rome’s citizens that there are other countries and people apart from their own. Moscow 1598. The great Tsar Ivan the Terrible has died and

Boris Godunov reluctantly, humbly takes the throne.

But rumours are rife that Boris has secretly murdered the

rightful heir and the distant shadow of this prodigal son

threatens to close in and take revenge. Pushkin wrote

Boris Godunov, with its beautiful echoes of Shakespeare’s

Histories and Macbeth, during the political turmoil of the

1820s in Russia.

Adrian Mitchell’s elegant adaptation was his final project before his death

in 2008. Michael Boyd will direct Boris Godunov as his final production as Artistic Director of the

Royal Shakespeare Company.

Arguably Brecht’s greatest play, The Life of Galileo charts the seventeenth century scientist’s extraordinary fight with the church over his assertion that the earth orbits the sun. Brecht beautifully captures the explosive struggle between scientific discovery and religious fundamentalism.

Bompas and Parr.. The Waft that WoosPaCCaR Room, From October 2012, FREE

Bompas & Parr have collaborated with Heston Blumenthal to design jellies, built a chocolate waterfall flowing at 12,000 litres an hour and flooded the roof of Selfridges to create a boating lake above Europe’s busiest shopping street. For the RSC they are creating a mirror labyrinth, navigable by nose and inspired by The Merry Wives of Windsor and Shakespearian comedy. Guests will explore an installation that puzzles, beguiles and enchants, following the scent of the only aphrodisiac known to mankind!
