PENNIES ADD UP TO MAJOR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT

By Cathy Shattles LipsettEditor/Publisher

Like many people I have a piggy bank that loose change, mostly pennies, goes into. Money from pockets before the clothes go into the washer, money that comes out of pockets and goes onto the dresser. A little here; a little there; and over time the piggy is well fed.

As a county, we have an opportunity to continue putting our pennies into our school systems. Like our homes, our schools need upgrading, new heating; new technology; new classroom space. There are not enough dollars in the regular school budget with the money that comes from property tax and state taxes. Those dollars fund teachers and transportation and administration.

For other things, such as a new school or additional classrooms or major upkeep and renovations, the school systems have three choices: make no improvements, which means crowded, aging schools without improved maintenance and safety improvements; pass a bond referendum with the tax burden falling solely on the property owners; or pass a one cent renewal of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, better known as SPLOST, with the cost paid by everyone.

The pennies in my piggy bank don’t add up to enough to make major repairs to our home. But when the penny tax is paid by everyone doing business in Cobb County, those pennies do add up, generating millions of dollars that will go a long ways toward improving the state of our local schools. The SPLOST renewal is projected to gener-ate $717,844,707 for the Cobb and Marietta School Systems over its five year span.

Early voting is now under way at select sites to renew this one cent sales tax for schools. The official voting day is March 19 throughout the county. This tax has been in place for many years, but each renewal must be for specific projects as approved by the school board. I won’t go into the whole list that benefits the schools of southern Cobb County, but they are numerous. The entire list can be found at www.cobbk12.org

There are additional classrooms for Teasley Elementary; a new main gymna-sium for Campbell High School; a the-atre for South Cobb High School; and a brand new school to replace Osborne High School. There are improvements for schools throughout the Southern Cobb area from

School boards have a lot of input from throughout the school system and commu-nity on the projects for the SPLOST list. It’s not an easy decision. There is always much to be done. Part of previous SPLOST money has been used to pay off earlier bond debt.

Tax increases are not something to approve without a lot of thought and due process. But of all the taxes that could be passed, this SPLOST is one that gives the most education benefits for our pennies. It prevents additional bond debt, keeps schools from crumbling or students being housed in portables; and upgrades our school system. We all have an important decision to make on March 19 for our schools; for our chil-dren; for our community; for our future.

SCIENCE FAIR WINNEREmmett Peters, a Fourth Grader at Austell Elementary, was the Second Place winner at the Third Annual Cobb County School District Elementary Sci-ence Fair, Feb. 2, at Kennesaw Moun-tain High School. Three times the number of students entered the fair this year over last year, showing that word is getting out about the quality and importance of science at the elementary level, as well as the interest of students in hands-on learning.

Mableton resident, Jen Moss started her path with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training (TNT) by run-ning a marathon in Nashville in 2003. She had been volunteering for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society since 9/11 in memory of her nana, Doris McCafferty, and was inspired to join TNT after attending an information meeting.

Her husband, Bill Moss started his journey with Team In Training by running a half marathon in Anchorage, Alaska in 2005. He was looking for a way to honor his mother, Margaret, who had lost her battle to leukemia in 2000.

Since Jen and Bill were both new to Atlanta, TNT gave them a way to meet new people.

Jen and Bill met through Team In Training in 2005 and became friends. Bill registered for a different marathon when Jen was coaching the 2006 TNT Dublin Marathon Team. She convinced him to join her team instead.

After completing the Dublin Mara-thon, they became engaged. Jen and Bill now have two daughters, who enjoy run-ning in local “tot trot” races and helping their parents volunteer for water stop duty at TNT group training sessions. Bill suc-cessfully completed the 2009 Walt Disney World Half Marathon with TNT in Orlando and was a mentor for the 2011 TNT Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Marathon Team. Jen suc-cessfully completed the 2007 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C., which Bill mentored. Together, they have completed 17 events with Team In Training.

Jen and Bill estimate that they have raised $48,000 for The Leukemia & Lym-phoma Society in all of their events.

When asked what drives her, Jen states, “I enjoy helping others raise money and taking on the challenge of training and completing an endurance event.” She par-ticipates on behalf of her nana and all the heroes she’s met since her first TNT event. “My nana was a strong, amazing woman who inspires me daily.”

Already in 2013, Jen coached the TNT Walt Disney World Marathon and Half Marathon Teams, which raised more than $94,000 for LLS. Bill just completed the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon and they both look forward to their next events with the program.

What’s keeping you awake?

We believe in life well-lived.

wellstar.org | 770-420-2535

If your nights are spent tossing and turning instead of sleeping soundly, a sleep study with the experts at WellStar Sleep Medicine can help.

Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia affect millions of people – children, teens and adults. How do you know if a sleep disorder is keeping you from getting the rest you need? Start with these questions.

• Do you snore? Or kick at night?

• Do you wake up frequently during the night?

• Do you feel tired during the day despite sleeping through the night?

• Do you sometimes doze off when inactive (watching television or reading)?

If you answered “yes” to these questions, a sleep disorder may be the culprit. A sleep study can pinpoint what’s disrupting your sleep so that WellStar’s sleep specialists can develop a treatment plan to get you sleeping well – and restore your energy for your waking hours.

Our team includes both adult and pediatric sleep experts, so your whole family can sleep well and live well. For more information, call 770-420-2535.

By Robert MeyringThis is your story. You worked hard to get where you are

in life. You have a good home, loving family and a good life generally. It’s not a perfect family or perfect home - as there is always some element of crazy or vice in every family and there is always something that needs to be done with the home. There is always room for improvement - even self-improvement. You do have some property, some money in the bank, some investments for retirement, you have insurance on your life and maybe your spouse has life insurance. You have gotten to where you are because of a consistent focus on what is important, doing what is right, staying out of trouble and working hard for your family, yourself, and believing in a greater good. Whether that good is here or in the great beyond, it’s the life that you have and how you choose to live it affects those who are closest to you.

Sometimes we become so busy work-ing for what matters most that we some-times forget to take care of some life foundational issues. We just said your life is good. But it’s not perfect. That’s why you got life insurance. Or maybe you didn’t. But what’s next? Meaning, follow the life insurance money through to its logical conclusion: To whom does the money go? What happens if the money pays to an ex-spouse, an underage child, or what happens if you don’t have it? (Disclaimer: I don’t sell life insurance.)

Your life insurance – or lack of it – is a good illustration of how you can plan and work hard for something and then have almost no idea of how it works. I’d

YOUR LIFE EVER AFTER

Robert Meyring

guess that most people cannot you answer this question: If your life insurance policy says “give the death benefit payout to my (ex)spouse Chris” and the will says “give all life insurance benefit to my (15 or 20

year old) child Pat,” then who gets the money if you die? Statistically, about half of the people who have life insurance do not have a will. That’s a little crazy, but it’s rational if you have worked so hard to take care of what matters most that you have forgotten to take care of your foundational estate plan in the form of a will or trust.

Thoughts: Nobody goes into the hospital planning to die. Nobody buys life insurance from a

computer program or an office store. You get what you pay for.

Point: Be prepared. Life is precious. Take care of your loved ones.

Maybe you don’t have an updated will or trust prepared by a trusts and estates attorney. Or maybe you don’t have an estate plan because you have figured out a way to avoid probate. If you have not updated your plan, or are trying to avoid probate and have not consulted with a trusts and estates attorney, you have just gambled on the foundation of everything you have worked a lifetime to earn. It can crumble and hurt the loved ones you tried to help. The “more money, more problems” syn-drome hits hard in the probate courts: it’s your legacy and family that pays. Estate planning short cuts during lifetime become family-splitting battles in the afterlife. That’s not a warning. It’s just the truth.

Comfort Keepers owner, Peter Wit-kiewicz said, “Unemployment in the US is too high, and employers can best serve our country by hiring only those who are authorized to work here legally. We’ve already met with a representative from the US Immigration and Customs Enforce-ment (ICE) agency, and we’re well along the way to certification.”

COMFORT KEEPERS SEEKS IMAGE CERTIFICATIONComfort Keepers is a long time vendor

to Cobb County. The company serves Cobb seniors through several programs adminis-tered through Cobb Senior Services. While Cobb County is currently in the process of becoming IMAGE certified, Cobb County Commissioners recently defeated a mea-sure that would require its vendors and vendor subcontractors to participate in IMAGE. Witkiewicz commented, “It’s too bad, really. An opportunity was lost. The problem of hiring illegals is not going to go away until all of us - government officials and employers alike - find the strength to act.”

Comfort Keepers has served Cobb County for nine years. It is locally owned and operated by Peter Witkiewicz. For more information, call 678-354-0102.

1 in 10 adults each year experience burning, tingling and numbness in their feet. This may be a serious condition known as Peripheral Neuropathy. If left untreated or misdiagnosed, it may lead to a life of unnecessary pain, severe infection or amputation.

Before now, the only treatment options were pills and more pills. The problem is that these medications only mask the problem allowing the condition to worsen and possibly lead to infection or amputation.

Georgia Neuropathy specializes in the most advanced, innova-tive, non-surgical treatments available for Peripheral Neuropathy. Our treatment is a combination of pain management procedures with a breakthrough technology that increases the circulation and allows the nerves to heal without surgery or addictive medications.

Medicare and most insurances accepted.

We have been a Primrose family for the last 8 years. From the beginning,

we felt that the experience at Primrose was a personalized experience, a

partnership with the staff and teachers who lived the “care” in “caregivers.”

The values being taught were consistent between school and home. Primrose

will forever be a part of our family’s fondest early childhood memories.

RUSSELL ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES DIVERSITYRussell Elementary School celebrated the rich diversity that makes Russell Elemen-tary such a special place during International Day Feb. 28.. The Georgia Key team and PTA worked together to organize a parade where students dressed in outfits that represented their native countries. Students walked around the school to the tune of “It’s a Small World,” all while the halls were lined with the cheering student body. Students, parents and staff members participated in the parade. Later that evening, the school hosted its first “Taste of Russell” where families brought food and artifacts from their native lands. Parents and students ate and enjoyed entertainment that was representative of the many different cultures that are present at Russell Elementary School. It was an amazing event that brought everyone together.
