1. Success Story Staff member receives na onal recogni on for an ‐violence work, from GVNow, November 11, 2013

Theresa Rowland, coordinator of the leadership program and the Violence Against Women Act grant for the Women’s Center, was selected to receive the Emerging Leader Award from the Na onal Women’s Studies Associa on, an organiza on that supports women and gender through teaching, learning, research and service in academic and other se ngs. Rowland was recognized at the NWSA Women’s Center Commi ee pre‐conference awards ceremony November 6 in Cincinna . As VAWA grant coordinator, Rowland organizes events and programs on campus that address sexual assault and da ng and domes c violence. She was nominated by Bri any Dernberger, assistant director of the Women’s Center, and Jo Ann Wassenaar, associate director of

the Women’s Center. “Theresa’s work has not only impacted our students on campus but across West Michigan and the state,” said Jo Ann Wassenaar, associate director of the Women’s Center. “Our communi es are a be er place to live because of her work.” Rowland received a master’s of educa on degree in College Student Affairs in Leadership from Grand Valley in 2010. She was a graduate assistant for the Office of Student Life’s Laker Leadership Program before she joined the Women’s Center in 2011 as VAWA coordinator. Jessica Jennrich, director of the Women’s Center, said Rowland’s innova on and enthusiasm has transformed the community. “She is a resource for all students and a mentor to faculty and staff alike. While I have been nothing but impressed by her exemplary work thus far I have reason the best is s ll yet to come,” said Jennrich. Marlene Kowalski‐Braun, assistant vice provost for Student Affairs, said Rowland’s an ‐violence work on campus has influenced tremendous cultural change. “She is a talented educator and connector and the en re campus community has benefited from her leadership,” said Kowalski‐Braun. Last year, the Women’s Center received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Na onal Women’s Studies Associa on.

2. News

MAREC incubator business launches new solar technology, from GVNow, November 6, 2013

A solar energy panel that addresses one of the major limita ons of solar energy has been developed by a business incubator client at Grand Valley State University’s Michigan Alterna ve and Renewable Energy Center. The device, Solar 24, captures solar energy during daylight hours, storing it in a built‐in ba ery system that allows it to distribute electricity 24 hours a day, unlike tradi onal solar panels. The project, developed with assistance from MAREC and the state‐funded Business Accelerator Fund (BAF) program, is led by Jim Wolter, founder of Energy Partners, LLC and professor emeritus at Grand Valley. Solar 24 debuted at the Solar Power Interna onal Conference in Chicago October 21‐24. MAREC assisted Energy Partners to obtain the BAF funding that supported development of the prototypes. “This is breakthrough technology. It’s the first of its kind that I’ve seen in the renewable energy industry and addresses the o en‐cited intermi ent nature of solar energy,” said Arn Boezaart, director of MAREC. “This kind of innova on is the reason MAREC’s business incubator program provides resources and space to develop new products and concepts.” Boezaart said the design is unique because it integrates three components into one package that can be used on a commercial scale: energy genera on, energy storage and an innova ve control system. Unlike most solar electric installa ons, this integra on allows 24/7 energy delivery, which opens up more and broader uses of solar energy while avoiding more costly and difficult energy storage solu ons. The device was built using readily available technologies and materials from Michigan‐based companies. Wolter, who has applied for several patents, said there are many applica ons for Solar 24 and he’s already seen interest from Michigan and na onal companies that could mass‐produce the device. Energy Partners, LLC, has been an incubator client at MAREC for three years and specializes in solar, energy storage systems, power management and smart grid controls. NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures

This program alert comes from Jean Feldman, Head, NSF Policy Office regarding the new (2014) Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) (see below):

A new version of the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG), (NSF 14‐1) has been issued. The PAPPG is comprised of documents rela ng to the Founda on's proposal and award process and consists of the:

(a) Grant Proposal Guide (GPG) for guidance on the prepara on and submission of proposals to NSF; and

(b) Award & Administra on Guide (AAG) to guide, manage, and monitor the award and administra on of grants and coopera ve agreements made by the Founda on.

This new version of the PAPPG will be effec ve for proposals submi ed, or due, on or a er February 24, 2014. Significant changes include:

Addi on to the cer fica on regarding Conflict of Interest regarding the appropriate disclosure process;

Reitera on that indirect costs are not allowed on par cipant support costs;

Small‐scale pilot of a new environmental impacts process with a few programs, prior to NSF‐wide implementa on;

Updated process for program income repor ng; and numerous clarifica ons throughout the document.

A by‐chapter summary of the changes is provided at the beginning of both the Grant Proposal Guide and the Award & Administra on Guide to assist with iden fying the changes.

While this version of the PAPPG becomes effec ve on February 24, 2014, in the interim, the guidelines contained in the current PAPPG (NSF 13‐1) con nue to apply. We will ensure that the current version of the PAPPG remains on the NSF website, with a nota on to proposers that specifies when the new PAPPG (including a link to the new Guide) will become effec ve.

NSF Offers Webinars on Advancing Informal STEM Learning Program, from GrantWeek, November 18, 2013

In November and December, the Na onal Science Founda on (NSF) is hos ng a series of webinars addressing key issues related to the FY 14 compe on of the Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program. In the introduc on webinar, NSF program directors stressed the importance of crea ng a research design that significantly advances the field of STEM educa on and that builds on exis ng work. The next deadline is January 14, 2014.

The AISL program supports five types of projects: Pathways, Research in Service to Prac ce, Innova ons in Development, Broad Implementa on, and Conferences, Symposia, and Workshops. During the webinar, NSF stressed uniqueness, calling for proposers to submit original, crea ve, and innova ve work that not only advances the field but provides a ra onal framework for scalability and replicability. The webinar also provided guidance regarding recommended proposal format and style with a strong sugges on that each proposal provide the following sec on headers: Project Ra onale, Project Design, Dissemina on Plan, Evalua on, External Review, and Management Plan. The other key advice was for proposers to be aware of Ins tu onal Review Board (IRB) requirements so that IRB compliance is not an issue when the agency is ready to make an award.

New USAID Strategy for Collabora ng with Colleges and Universi es, from GrantWeek, November 11, 2013

The United States Agency for Interna onal Development (USAID) announced a major shi in how it will collaborate with colleges and universi es. Inside Higher Ed reports that during a session at the Associa on of Public and Land‐grant Universi es Annual Mee ng on November 10, Eric Postel, assistant administrator for USAID’s Bureau of Economic Growth, Educa on and Environment, described a new approach that will allow USAID to deal more directly with colleges and universi es through “tech challenges” and “challenge grants.”

This announcement comes on the heels of USAID’s recent decision not to renew the contract funding its current mechanism for collabora ng with colleges and universi es, Higher Educa on for Development (HED). HED, run by a consor um of associa ons of higher learning, served as an intermediary between USAID and colleges and universi es.

According to Inside Higher Ed, Postel cited two projects which may exemplify the new direc on USAID is taking: USAID’s Higher Educa on Solu ons Network which runs interdisciplinary “development labs” at seven universi es to research solu ons to global challenges and its forthcoming Wildlife Trafficking Tech Challenge which is an effort to engage students, researchers, and ac vists in developing crea ve ideas and solu ons to prevent wildlife trafficking. This shi away from a top‐down approach will allow colleges and universi es to define interna onal development problems more directly and come up with crea ve solu ons on their own. Inside Higher Ed says Postel assured colleges and universi es that, coinciding with this change in approach, the number and diversity of funding opportuni es will likely increase.

NIH Shares Informa on on New Build Program, from GrantWeek, November 11, 2013

Na onal Ins tutes of Health (NIH) shared hints on the possible direc on of its new Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) program during an interac ve training session held on November 2. BUILD is part of a major new NIH ini a ve aimed at engaging underrepresented students in research and sustaining their interest as they move through the educa onal pipeline toward the goal of becoming independent biomedical/behavioral research scien sts. According to NIH, a new BUILD compe on for implementa on grants is expected to be announced in late 2013 or early 2014. Ten awards will be made. During the mee ng, NIH presented four topics in an effort to engage the audience in sharing their ideas. These topics will likely feature prominently in the final grant announcement. NIH said it is looking for bold new ideas to truly transform the ways biomedical research will be conducted in the future to ensure diversity in the NIH workforce in the following areas:

Student engagement ‐ what can ins tu ons do to capture underrepresented undergraduates’ interest in research?

Sustaining interest in research ‐ how can ini al interest in research be sustained to retain highly talented students?

Mentoring ‐ what novel strategies might be developed to help engage students and sustain their interest?

Innova on in research training ‐ what new types of curricula or laboratory experiences need to be developed?
