Engaging and ChallengingOur JCC Early Childhood Education program provides an integrated

curriculum enhanced by hands-on experiences.What do the letter “S” and the country of China have in common? Did you guess spaghetti? If so, you’re just as smart as the four-year olds enrolled in our Early Childhood Education (ECE) program here at the JCC. Using an integrated curriculum our teachers have taught their students that spaghetti, which was invented in China, can also be used to create geometric shapes and when you boil spaghetti it becomes soft - forming the letter “S”. In just a few short lessons the students have taken a journey with the letter “S”. It has becomes more than just a letter in the alphabet, it also plays a role in social studies, math, science and vocabulary. At the JCC ECE our integrated curriculum is just one example of how our program is always evolving and changing with what research and practice prove to be “best practices” in early childhood education. “In both our Park Heights and Owings Mills ECE programs, we strive to offer our students innovative and interesting learning opportunities that are both engaging and enriching,” explains Ilene Meister, the JCC’s Early Childhood Education Director. “Many parents today are looking for preschool programs that are intellectually challenging while also providing ample time for play.” In fact “play experiences provide some of the most significant opportunities for learning,” says Jodi Fishman, Director of Early Childhood Education at Park Heights. For instance, when playing together with blocks, children are naturally exposed to math, science and social studies concepts - all while developing new vocabulary and social skills. It is also during play when children can “practice” the Jewish values we teach at the JCC. The children are introduced in a hands-on, developmentally appropriate manner, to Jewish principles or values based on passages from Pirkei Avot, a classic Jewish text. Its teachings focus on how we can live a moral and ethical life showing children ways to turn ethical values into ethical behavior. Drawing from the rich

moral teachings of Judaism, our goal is to bring these values to the children and families whom we serve. In the process we hope to build a community of learners who have respect for the diversity of thinking and expression that exists within the Jewish

community. “Exposure to values through Jewish text is an opportunity for young children to make important connections between the way they behave and the impact these behaviors have on members of their community,” says Ms. Fishman.Another way for children

to learn about their “inner selves” is to teach them to eat right and take care of their bodies. To this end the school has started a healthy snack program, which features fruits and vegetables, whole grains, cheese and milk. At the Owings Mills ECE we offer healthy cooking classes that introduce new food items and discussions on the importance of eating food from all the food groups. Parents are thrilled to learn that at school, their kids are eating nutritious food that they want to have at home too.

Holding the BagOne of my favorite stories involves a woman who boards a bus in downtown Jerusalem, handing the bus driver a bag of almonds. He looks at her and asks, “Is this for me?” and she nods and takes her seat. The following day the exact scenario replays, as he gladly accepts the bag of almonds offered with a smile. The following week the same woman boards the bus and hands over another bag of

almonds, and the bus driver can no longer contain his curiosity about what has been going on.“G’veret (Lady), I certainly appreciate these nice bags of almonds, but why do you keep giving them to me?”“I’ll tell you frankly, nahag (driver), I don’t particularly care for almonds.”Surprised, the driver asks the same question you and I would ask the woman, “If you don’t like them, why do you keep buying them?”“Why do I buy them? I love the chocolate coating!”It’s a little gross, I know, but it always gets a smile (I hope).But even more than that, it’s a reminder that so much of what we experience has two parts: what we see, and what we don’t see.As I write this message, all I see outside is snow, mounds and mounds and piles and piles of white, fluffy stuff. It has its challenges and even dangers, for sure. And yet, for so many of us, as we shoveled and chipped away at the ice, we saw people in our neighborhood doing the same, and it felt good to shmooze with our neighbors, and get reacquainted and commiserate. So used to our virtual “facebook,” now it was live, real and fun!Everything that comes our way has the coating which we see, and the blessings and gifts that are waiting to be discovered. Enjoy the chocolate, but don’t give away the almond!

NeW Guest Policy for saturdays Now in effectIf you wish to bring a guest to the JCC on Saturday you will need to purchase your guest pass in advance. These can be purchased Sunday through Friday at the front desk or cashier’s office. No guests will be admitted on Saturday afternoons in Owings Mills or Saturday evenings in Park Heights without a guest pass.

Census 2010Testing for the Census Bureau will continue to take place at the Park Heights JCC. These tests are civil service exams to determine if the candidates are qualified to be census takers or man information booths. Information tables will be maintained with bilingual (English and Russian) staff on Sundays and Wednesdays, beginning March 21 thru April 21 from 9:00am-1:00pm.

Passover seder for Adults with special Needs Tuesday, March 16

Jewish Community Services (JCS) and the Jewish Community Center (JCC) will hold a Model Seder for adults ages 18 and over with special needs and their families. Seder participants will use a Haggadah prepared especially for the event. They will enjoy traditional Passover foods and take part in singing and telling the story of Passover. Rabbi Tsvi Schur, Director of Jewish Community Chaplaincy, will lead the Seder, with music

provided by locally based Jewish performer Rabbi Avraham Rosenblum. “For over forty years, the Model Seder has given adults with developmental disabilities the opportunity to participate in a meaningful and spiritually enriching community celebration of the Passover holiday. Meyerhoff early Childhood education Center Celebrates Chanukah On Wednesday, December 16 the Meyerhoff ECE Center at the Weinberg Park Heights JCC celebrated Chanukah with their annual Family Chanukah Dinner. A record 150 parents and children were in attendance! Following a festive dinner filled with lots of talk and laughter, everyone joined together for candle lighting, Chanukah song sing along, and a puppet show by Becky Gordon and her Yofi Tofi Puppet Theatre.

KLAL, Keep Living And LearningNew program for young adults with special needs

KLAL, meaning community in Hebrew, is the basis of our new special needs young adult summer experience. During the program, participants will give back to the community while learning life skills to build their own community. This new, self contained six week camp program is for young adults 16-24 with learning, developmental, social, emotional, and physical disabilities. Campers will spend their days at the Owing Mills JCC participating in typical camp activities including swimming, kick ball, art, nature, dance, Tae Bo and games. Twice a week, a specialist will lead a communication program to improve social and life skills. In addition, vocational training will run twice a week and will teach campers lessons such as doing laundry, cooking, making a bed, and setting a table. Participants will take part in a weekly Mitzvah project preparing crafts or songs for the elderly. The program will also have a camper run café for family members and JCC staff.

Maccabi: A Mom’s eye View An Interview with emily Goren

Emily Goren has been a part of Maccabi since 2000 when her oldest son started participating and competing. Both of her boys, Jason (22) and Brian (20) have spent four years on Maccabi baseball teams. Each year, Emily and her husband Howard have gone along for the ride whether in Baltimore or other states, to assist and watch them compete. After the first Maccabi that the Goren’s attended, Emily immediately knew this was something in which she had to be a part. The experience of meeting Jews from all over the world and visiting so many communities was something so amazing that she called our Maccabi office right away to see how she could get involved. Since then, she has been involved every year. This year, Emily Goren is the Chair of the Hospitality Committee for the JCC Maccabi Experience (Games & Artsfest) that will be taking place in Baltimore August 8-13. The job entails taking care of all visiting families and making sure that information is available to participants and the community. Along with her co-chair Jodi Stappler, she is responsible for supplying Maccabi information to hotels where families will be staying, providing them with information on Baltimore’s attractions and food and making sure that the entire community has access to Maccabi schedules and information. Last time that Maccabi was in Baltimore (2007), Emily was the Housing Chair. She has also held the role of Chairman of the Board for the Baltimore Maccabi Club. Although this was a major undertaking, she loved being a part of it all. “Everyone on the board was willing to give it their all,” she says of her experience. “It was a very strong lay group–which in turn led

to a very successful experience.” Even when the games were held elsewhere, she stepped up to the plate. She played the part of delegation head when the games were not in Baltimore and has assisted with everything from bagging all the uniforms to the ceremonial pinnings. Emily and her family have gained so much from being part of the JCC Maccabi Games over the past 10 years. She says that being around so many Jewish kids at the same time is unbelievable. Emily explains that there is a feeling of instantly being comfortable together because everyone has something in common. She believes that Maccabi is a great experience for kids that really helps them to grow. “The kids benefit so much from volunteering and doing community service as a team, says Emily. “I am really big on Tikun Olam, it is so important and necessary to give back!” This year, more than 1,000 volunteers are needed to work with the JCC staff in planning and facilitating the Baltimore 2010 JCC Maccabi Experience. You can help make this event memorable for the athletes, artists, our community and for you. There are so many ways you can assist us and be part of this great event. Volunteers are needed for registration, events, food service, hospitality, medical, security, transportation and more.

JCC Aquatics director Bill Kirkner to serve on National Lifeguarding Workgroup The Preparedness and Health and Safety Services department of the American Red Cross recently selected their Lifeguarding Program Sounding Board and Workgroups. Among these select individuals is our very own Aquatics Director, Bill Kirkner! Over 350 applications were received and Bill was singled out for having a wide range of aquatic experience and a strong lifeguarding program.

Aquatic Leadership Adventure Camps!We are excited to roll out some new and exciting Aquatics programs for swimmers ages 11-18 this summer! These camps will range

from 2-6 week sessions and will run from 8:30am - 4:30pm. According to Bill Kirkner, “This camp is part physical challenge and part mental challenge. We’re going to mix in some history and tradition and try to teach some lessons about responsibility, ethics, and leadership.”So if you think you are ready to join the crew, we invite you to check out these exciting new opportunities!Programs will include:

• Aquatic Adventure Camp (For Swimmers ages 11 – 14)• Aquatic Leadership Adventure (For Swimmers ages 15 - 18) • F.L.O.A.t. Program-For Leadership Of Aquatics training (CIT-style program for swimmers ages 15 & up; interview and application required)These three different camp programs have a lot in common. All will spend mornings learning water safety and rescue skills (including First Aid and CPR.) What will vary between the programs will be the “level of intensity.” Younger participants will be getting “base-level” training, while older participants will be getting professional-level certification.The afternoon programs will center around common skills, such as: navigation, underwater exploration (snorkeling and SCUBA), environmental science (weather, dangerous marine life, currents and tides), communication (lifeguard hand signals, flag codes, marine radio), boating, and basic outdoor skills (knots, lashings) that are common to living and working in an aquatic environment. The level of intensity will vary depending on the skill of the participant.Participants who come for one session will learn one set of skills, but campers who come for two sessions will find that they start their second session in a different place and that will open the door to them learning a completely different set of skills. “I believe they will find that their recently acquired knowledge and experience will be helpful to their crew,” explains Bill. The biggest difference between all of the programs is the amount of responsibility that campers will have for their fellow “crew members.” Participants who demonstrate strong skills and leadership will be given bigger responsibilities, and opportunities to work on more difficult projects.Campers must pass a swim test in order to register for any of our Aquatic Summer Camp Programs. These programs are intended for experienced swimmers. Completion of at least American Red Cross Level 4 or above is recommended. While there will be some “stroke clinic” work during the program, swimming instruction is NOT the main purpose of this camp.

Community study Helps THe AssOCIATed and its Agencies Plan for the FutureEvery 10 years, THE ASSOCIATED undertakes a thorough study of the Baltimore Jewish community to see what’s changing. “The 2010 Community Study is a comprehensive look at where, why and how we live, work, play and pray,” says Michael Saxon, the Chair of the 2010 Community Study and a former JCC Board Chairman. For the next decade, the information gleaned from this study will inform the planning and strategies for Baltimore’s Jewish schools, synagogues, the JCC, and THE ASSOCIATED and its other constituent agencies. In fact, many of the programs and services that the JCC and other Jewish community organizations have developed over the last decade are a direct result of information, data and trends culled from the last study, released in 2000.The specialists undertaking the 2010 study began calling randomly selected landlines and cell phones last month to complete 1,200 interviews in the Baltimore area. They are talking to the Jewish population already involved in the Jewish community (including JCC members), as well as Jews who are not currently involved in Jewish organizations, whether they are in areas where Jews are concentrated, like Pikesville and Owings Mills, or in communities with fewer Jews like Hunt Valley, Roland Park and downtown Baltimore. The more Jews who are reached that are not actively involved in the community, the more accurate the conclusions drawn from the study will be.There will be enough similarities between the 2000 and the 2010

studies that the two will be comparable, but many aspects of the 2010 study will be customized to look at what is going on right now as opposed to 10 years ago. The leadership of the Community Study urges members of the community to take the time to answer the survey if they are contacted by the research firm conducting the interviews. By giving 18 minutes, you are helping the broader community and building a strong and vibrant future for everyone. “We study ourselves in order to better plan for the future,” Saxon says. “We can pick the future we want for ourselves and for our children and then focus our communal efforts on getting there.”
