The Newsletter with events and programs from the JCC Baltimore
Citation preview
In 2009, the JCC embarked on an ambitious mission to examine the current state of its Jewish Arts & Culture programming. The intention was to re-imagine ourselves as a springboard for music, dance, drama and other arts, all of which could be viewed through a Jewish prism.
Over the past two years talented individuals and many community members worked together to determine what people wanted and what could be possible. The key players included Tom Kohn, who chaired the Arts and Culture Task Force, along with JCC staff members: Dale Busch, Phil Miller, Esther Greenberg, and consultant Jay Wolf Schlossberg-Cohen. The membership of the Arts and Culture Task Force was also made up of dedicated and multi-talented
individuals including JCC Board members, local artists, community leaders and patrons of the arts from across the spectrum of Baltimore Jewry. The eclectic composition of this Task Force reflected the core commitment to partnerships with Jewish and non- Jewish organizations that will be at the heart of
this initiative. The Task Force gathered much of its information and feedback by reaching out to our community by using online surveys, interactive town hall meetings, and a high-level Best Practices Summit of other JCC Arts & Culture professionals funded by the Joseph and Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds. They also solicited and invited
involvement and information from potential partners and alliances in the Baltimore Arts community. From all of their conversations, surveys, town hall meetings, investigations, the Summit and community feedback, they were able to make some conclusions regarding the practicality and efficacy of an Arts and Culture initiative:• Arts and Culture are at the core of who we are as Jews and are ends unto themselves.
• The growth and stability of Jewish Arts and Culture begins with adults – our current parents and grandparents. • Teens, as the future of this community, must be engaged at all possible levels. • We should not be afraid to embrace our Jewish Vision. • Our community desires an active and compelling array of programs, events and activities related to Jewish Arts and Culture.

Wisdom for Today By Rabbi David Greenspoon
RainbowsA few weeks ago I was driving after a rainstorm and a truly wondrous sight appeared over Pikesville. There was a really beautiful and strong rainbow. That was nice, but not wondrous. What was wondrous was that next to it was a second rainbow. The colors weren’t quite as clear and strong, but it was absolutely a second rainbow. In fact, I saw drivers pulling cars over to the side of the road so that kids and adults alike could marvel at the wonderful display. Now, I’ve never been this close to a double rainbow in real life. I have, once, found the end of the rainbow. My friend and I were driving south on the Florida Turnpike, just north of Orlando. A quick summer storm had just passed through, and we saw a rainbow ahead of us. We were talking about rainbows and I had just asked my friend “Have you ever seen the end of a rainbow?” No sooner were the words out of my mouth than we came to a break in some hills in front of an orange grove. Right there was the end of the rainbow, the spectrum of its colors colliding with the oranges to create a shimmery, almost electric, golden glow to the air. It was breathtaking. It was magical. We did not stop to look for either a pot of gold or the famous cereal leprechauns. We were inspired to make it a point to find the blessing that Judaism has created to respond to the experience of a rainbow.
Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu melekh haolam zokher hab’rit v’ne’eman bivrito v’kayam b’ma’amaro.Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of Eternity, who remembers the Covenant, and is faithful to God’s covenant, and keeps God’s promise.
The references to the Covenant and promise are to the Noah story in the Bible. At the end of the story when God promised never to attempt to wipe out humanity again, God put up a sign: the rainbow. (Gen. 9) The strength of the image is lost on modern people. This story is so ancient, that it goes back to the time almost before history when the compound bow reflected the most deadly military technology in the world. God retiring the bow is like the gunslinger hanging up his spurs, or the nuclear genie going back in the bottle. This device for death and destruction will be employed no more. The rainbow has done its job well. Hardly anyone would consider it to represent a cutting edge weapon of mass destruction. If anything, we tend to think of those cute leprechauns. Or maybe unicorns. And that’s really what the power of God in the world is all about. The rainbow reminds us that even God needed a second chance to get it right. The rainbow reminds us that we can transform items and how they affect others, simply by our own intention. The rainbow reminds us that there is wonder in the word. The rainbow reminds us that while it might not always be so obvious, the power of God is in the world too. So the next time you see a rainbow, and certainly a double rainbow, take the time out to appreciate it. Even if you don’t remember the words of the blessing, remember that Judaism has a way of sanctifying this experience. Then take the time to enjoy the rainbow. When you do, you confirm that the power of God can still be felt in our own times.

Your Center for Information
Meet our new Chairman of the Board, Neil Demchick. During the next two years, Neil will be overseeing the JCC’s growth into several new areas, including the transition of top leadership at the JCC.What previous leadership roles did you hold at the JCC before becoming Chairman?Neil previously chaired the Budget and Teen committees and has been involved in the Health & Fitness, Audit and JCC Maccabi Games & Artsfest committees. He is excited to help guide the JCC and to bring his financial expertise to this position. What JCC programs have you and your family participated in?When our kids were young, they attended the JCC’s preschool program and went on to participate in JCC camps and teen events. Our family always hung out at the JCC pool in the summer and the kids were part of the JCC Maccabi
Games® and took tennis lessons. Many of our closest relationships grew out of our JCC involvement. Without the JCC, we would likely not have the same wonderful friends. What do you see as the biggest challenges to the JCC right now?The JCC is in a tremendous transition time. Dale Busch, the JCC’s Executive Vice President has just retired and Buddy Sapolsky is planning his retirement in two years. The Board is looking for the future leadership of the JCC and this will be a great time to make a difference. In terms of the Baltimore Jewish Community, the demographics are changing. People are spreading out throughout Baltimore vs. being concentrated in a more central area and they are becoming less affiliated than they used to be. One of the areas we will focus on will be maintaining the strength of the JCC, its programs and of course its financial position.
What makes you excited to be a JCC leader right now?I am looking forward to focusing on outreach programs, implementing the new Arts & Culture initiative and responding to current and future demographics. The JCC is a magnificent organization and a tremendous place of energy. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back just a little.

Capital Campers ZUMBA® into Healthy ChoicesThis past summer, Capital Camps welcomed Milldale Director, Dori Zvili to lead campers and staff in a high energy ZUMBA® session. On a warm Sunday morning, campers entering 8th-10th grades had the opportunity to join Dori in this fun workout. Equipped with hip-hop music and lots of water, campers enjoyed this physically demanding and very healthy experience! This optional ZUMBA® class is just one example of how Capital Camps provides campers with the opportunity to make independent choices which impact their lives. Another example is our “Healthy Choices” menu that campers and staff can choose. Both our traditional menu and the “Healthy Choices” menu were developed in consultation with Foodwize, a national organization that specializes in developing menus for camps and schools. As one parent noted, “I love that my son has this opportunity. It encourages him to think critically about his actions and to make choices without us – that is the beauty of an overnight camp like Capital.”
Request a home visit or register for camp at www.capitalcamps.org . Registration is also
open for Yotair, our five-day Rookie Camp for campers entering 2nd- 4th grades.
For JCC members, the registration fee for Yotair is only $100 (reduced from $500).

BODYFLOW™ and YogaWhat’s the difference?
If you are looking for a great workout that leaves you feeling centered and in control, Les Mills BODYFLOW™ might be for you. This popular class uses a combination of Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates to build flexibility and strength. So, what exactly is BODYFLOW™ and how is it different from Yoga? We asked members to give us their feedback on this recent addition to our Group Fitness schedule.Beth Mayers has been doing Yoga for over 20 years and recently added BODYFLOW™ to her workout routine. She says that, “BODYFLOW™ works out all the different body parts. She points out that “While you can expect lubrication of joints and improvement in balance from either class, the standard moves to the music make BODYFLOW™ different than the flow of Yoga.” Longtime JCC member, Bracha Goetz agrees that while BODYFLOW™ and Yoga can both offer vigorous ways to get a workout, there are distinctions between the two. “BODYFLOW™ feels more like exercise and participants move in rhythm to loud music. Yoga focuses more on the spiritual and participants move in sync to their own breath or softer music.”
You can check out these classes for yourself at either JCC location. Whether you want to get some extra stretching into your routine or you are looking for a new way to burn calories, BODYFLOW™ can help you accomplish both. As the Les Mills website assures, give this class a try and you too can “Be the Calm in the Storm”! For a complete listing of both BODYFLOW™ and Yoga classes, visit www.

Amber Room Provides a Wellness Oasis Editor Esther Apt shares her experience
The original Amber Room of Russia, once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World, was a golden, amber-encrusted room that celebrated peace between Russia and Prussia. The serene Amber Room at the Rosenbloom OM JCC, owned by skin care specialist Polina Mirskiy, comes pretty close to being a wonder in its own right. I know because I recently had my own Amber Room experience.Like most people, I grew up struggling with acne, dry skin and the like. Many years and products later, I am still hesitant to let someone use unfamiliar oils and chemicals on my face. Nevertheless, as Polina explained the science of molecules and lactic acids to me, I felt confident that I was in expert hands. Polina asked me about my skincare habits, making helpful suggestions on how to tweak to my daily routine. I learned that skin constantly needs to be rehydrated and the best time to do that is actually when your skin is already moist. Although this may seem counterintuitive, “That is when your skin is really asking for it.” Polina explains. My session with Polina was not the same as having my face poked at the dermatologist, this was a true spa experience. Soothing music played in the background while she sprayed me with rose-water and massaged my face, head, neck, shoulders and even ears. Next, cooling “Beauty Balls” and Baltic Amber Stones were strategically placed on my face, temples and neck, to take me deeper into a state of relaxation. I walked out of my 90 minute session feeling calm and rejuvenated and ready to face the world. My Amber Room Custom Facial was not only a purging of the dead cells and oil on my face but of the previous misconceptions I had about my skin. JCC Lifeguard, Max Mendelzon, is a hero in our midst. Last June, he administered CPR to a JCC member in the Wood Gym at the OM JCC when he suffered a heart attack. Max was honored by the Baltimore County Fire Department for the use of CPR and an AED in the saving of a life.
We Get Letters … Thanks for taking the time to come up with a favorable solution that allows seniors the chance to enjoy separate swimming on Sundays. Instead of dreading a long, boring Sunday, my mother has really been enjoying her Sunday morning swims. She looks forward to her swimming outings and even brings her special-needs granddaughter with her to give her daughter-in-law a break. Thanks again for making this possible.

This week’s chapter of a story 3,000 years in the making.
Jewish Community Center Staff News
Employee of the Month Mike Mendelzon JCC lifeguard, Mike Mendelzon was nominated for employee of the month by two different departments this September. Camp Milldale Director, Dori Zvili, felt that Mike deserved acknowledgment for being such an asset to camp this year. “Mike was a true ‘rock’ for me this summer at the pool,” says Dori. “He took care of any issues we threw his way while going above and beyond to make sure the kids and their parents were happy”. Aquatics Director, Bill Kirkner, also recognized Mike for taking initiative at the OM JCC during the Hurricane this summer. Mike was in the middle of a college class when he heard about the flooding and bad weather. He left school and rushed to the JCC to take the steps necessary to prevent a major flood in the JCC building. This move saved the agency hundreds of dollars in damages. We commend and thank Mike for his exemplary performance.
Arts & Culture continued from page 1
• Jewish Arts and Culture is a partnership between the consumers and the creators – it must be a real collaboration. It is also a partnership with other Jewish organizations and arts organizations throughout Baltimore.• Communication is a key component in making any initiative successful. • Quality programs and committed arts professionals are the necessary recipe for arts and culture innovation.• We must identify and hire a Managing Director for Jewish Arts & Culture. These conclusions, and many potential programming and partnership ideas, were presented to the JCC Board of Directors in September. The board voted overwhelmingly to support the Task Force’s goal, which is to move forward with the necessary organizational changes here at the JCC.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the work that was accomplished by our lay and professional leadership who led the charge along with countless community members who participated in the process,” raves Louis “Buddy” Sapolsky, President of JCC of Greater Baltimore. “The plan that was developed can and will be transformative for both the JCC and the larger Jewish Community.” Stay tuned in the coming months as we share our progress along this exciting journey. As always, we welcome your input. Feel free to share your thoughts on how the JCC can be a focal point for Arts and Culture by leaving a comment in our suggestion boxes or emailing [email protected].

ASSOCIATED CORNERMeet the Seegulls
Eleven-year-old Ezra Seegull had never been out of the country, and certainly not to Israel. But this past summer, he and his younger brother, Ronen, travelled with their parents, Diane and Larry, all the way across the ocean.“It was amazing!” says Ezra, from his Reisterstown home, months after their trip to Israel. “We went all over the country, up north to the Golan and into the south. We went everywhere but Eilat!”The experience took Ezra’s breath away, he says, and he cannot wait to return. The most meaningful part of his travels, however, was his trip to our sister city, Ashkelon. The Seegulls decided they wanted their children to have a hands-on community service experience in Israel. Diane says she wanted the kids to have a chance to give back to the country and to understand that while their trip may take them to the most beautiful parts of our Jewish homeland, there are still many needs in Israel. She also wanted her children to experience Ashkelon.Seegull called THE ASSOCIATED, and through our Partnership Director in Israel, Sigal Ariely, and Missions Director, Maia Hoffman, a hands-on project at Or Shalom was arranged. These types of projects are possible because of the close-ties between our sister cities, the new Stewart and Marlene Greenebaum Volunteer Center in Ashkelon and the volunteer coordinators on both sides of the ocean.Or Shalom is a home for children-at-risk, whose parents could no longer keep them for any number of reasons. The youth are kept at the facility, where they are raised by a dorm mother, offered homework help and emotional counseling. The boys, of course, were told only the minimum. For them, meeting with the children of Or Shalom was more about exchanging cultures with their Israeli peers and doing a mitzvah.“We made candy bags for children in the hospital,” says Ezra, who has pictures of himself with the Or Shalom children decorating bags and stuffing them with delicious treats. “I’m not fluent in Hebrew, but I know a little because of going to Beth Tfiloh [Dahan Community School], so I was able to interact.”“I was so pleased to watch this – using their Hebrew and doing something that I know will stick,” says Mom. “We were so moved by the whole thing that Larry and I decided to make a gift to Or Shalom. Larry and I have always been involved in THE ASSOCIATED, but now we have a much deeper understanding of what it means to have a Sister City and we can better convey the importance to others.”Ashkelon is a small city, says Diane, and it makes Baltimore’s impact strong and noticeable. She says she was thrilled to see the Lyn Stacie Getz Playground and the Nesher Ethiopian Teen Center that the Russel Family recently supported.“It is so nice to go there and see something tangible,” says Diane. “When we put our resources into one area, the results are evident.”She applauds the number of people who visit Ashkelon – over 1,000 from Baltimore in a given year, including hundreds of teens. She says having a sister city is good for Ashkelon, but it’s essential for us in Baltimore.“Even though Israel is 6,000 miles away, we really felt connected with the people of Israel through Ashkelon and we need to make sure that connection holds,” says Diane. “It is such a special feeling to be a part of the global Jewish community and I just hope that everyone, one day, has a chance to experience it.”If you can’t travel to Israel, give back locally!
