Community Safety Announcement

Everyone arriving into Australia from overseas from midnight tonight (15 March) will be required to self-isolate for 14 days. This

obviously includes students and staff who may be returning from overseas excursions or other travel. Importantly, it also

includes parents and carers and any other relatives or friends of your students who are returning from overseas travel.

As they are required to self-isolate, they must not visit the school to pick up children or for any other reason.

Easter Raffle Please bring in your donations for the Easter raffle. The more donations we have the more prizes we can offer! Anything Easter related will be very much appreciated, from Easter eggs to baskets, from books to decorations. Raffle tickets have been sent home today with the newsletter. Lovely Lunches additions This week we have added shepherd’s pie @ $4.50 and party pies @ $1.00.

Junior School Council Casual Clothes Day On Friday 27th March we will be having a casual clothes day at school to raise money for Clifton Creek Primary School. We would like to buy books and games to donate to the school. It is very important that everyone who wears casual clothes brings a gold coin donation on that day. On behalf of the Junior School Council we would like to thank you for helping us. Charlie Moss and Keanu Brown (JSC reps)

PREP NEWS How time flies, the term is nearly finished with only a few short weeks left, I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and is ready for the final few weeks. Congratulations to Jake Hartley for thinking of others and inviting his peers to play. Ivy Mallen, Nixon Tunnage and Zoe Nairn for their great music enthusiasm. The students have received a small booklet of commonly used words that they can practice at home. Start with the Golden word list and encourage them to read the words in any order and find them in the books that they take home. When they are able to do this consistently, they are ready to read the Red Words. As an extra challenge let them write as many as they can and read them back. This week students have their first rewards day. This is an afternoon where they choose an activity from a small list and have an afternoon of well-earned fun. It is a rewards based system to thank them for their smart choices and acknowledge them for all their hard work. The class will be starting their group sharing this week on Thursday and Friday. This is when they are invited to bring something special in and tell the class about it. They need to think about what it is and where they go it from. They need to tell us how they use it and why it was special enough to bring in. This week we are looking at: Reading

Getting Knowledge Ready: We are looking at linking events in the story to their own personal experience.

Matching initial sounds to words and picture when reading

Letter & sound ‘Gg’ Gulping Gary and ‘Oo’ Orange Octopus Writing

Letter formation- upper and lower case

Sentence structure – who, what doing & what. This supports students when trying to write a sentence, helping them find where to place the full stops and what information needs to be included. E.g. A girl was running on the bridge.

Spacing – We are looking at placing spaces in between our words with the support of ‘space man’. We are looking at what a word is and the initial sounds at the start of every to help us decide where space man should go.

Maths: Larger and smaller groups, making size estimations and displaying objects in 10 frames for quick recognition. Positional Language- listening to where things are located such as under, behind, over and others. Integrated Studies: Emotions: how different situations determine our emotions and what we do. Social: Social Justice – being an active listener. Rights and Relationships: Personal strength, building strength through cooperation

GRADE 1/2 M NEWS No news item as Mrs McDonnell is absent today GRADE 1/2 O NEWS Hello from 1/2 O. Sorry about the lack of report last week – I was finding my feet!!! I am enjoying the opportunity to spend more time with the children while Deb is enjoying her travels in Africa. Students have been participating in a variety of number sense games developing their skills in recognizing quantities to 20 without counting. Games include ‘Get out of my house’ I have Who has, Memory. They have also completed another Number challenge representing 12 in such a way that others can identify the quantity without counting. We have been locating and classifying vowel digraphs found in the books they are reading and linking them with a class mentor text called Big Rain Coming. This book has also been used to develop the children’s skills in decoding, text construction and comprehension. I am encouraging children to read every night with an adult to aid their progress and enjoyment of reading. Each time an adult hears them read their sheet is stamped and points are earned towards a table reward. I really appreciate Melinda coming in each Friday to assist with hearing children read. We would love to see more parents willing to stay for up to 30 minutes on any morning to assist with reading. We have been very fortunate so have music sessions these past few weeks with our inspirational Irish musicians, Stiofan and Daithi. The children are thoroughly enjoying these sessions. We are having another one tomorrow on St. Patricks Day Children are looking forward to Rewards Day which recognizes students who are following the schools values. A variety of interesting activities are planned. William, Charlotte and Ashton received awards for their great work representing numbers during the Maths challenge activities. Well done all! I have made a couple containers of playdough for our developmental play sessions on Fridays. I am hoping one or two more parents might also be able to make some playdough to enable more children to create in these sessions. This is, of course, when plain flour is available again! Cheers, Jane Lloyd

GRADE 3/4 M NEWS Hello from 3/4 M Wow! It has been fantastic to see the way all 3/4 M are embracing their Independent Reading in the morning this term. Consequently, the whole class received my award this week recognising their commitment to becoming better readers. If you are available first thing in the morning and are available to listen to children read, I would love for you to join us. This week we are reading informative texts and will be focussing on identifying and making connections with new information. I will be demonstrating the way we can read these books with a sense of “Wow” and connect new information we read with what we already know to improve our understanding of a topic. Please support this learning by asking your child about their topic and what they have learnt in their reading. In maths we will be moving from place value and patterns into addition strategies. We will continue to practise our fluency skills which assist us with all of our maths. Our challenging task this week is “domino donuts” and I look forward to observing how the children approach this task. The children are all working really well with Stiofan and Daithi and it is wonderful to have such talented musicians available us. On Monday, the students completed a bit of a ‘challenging’ task making shamrocks for us to hang for St Patrick’s Day. I am sure Stiofan and Daithi appreciated the little bit of green in our room and I loved seeing them hang in the room. Mrs Larissa Murray

GRADE 3/4 C NEWS Hello and welcome to week 8. My first award this week went to Cooper Anderson, for always putting 100% effort into everything he does and always helping others to succeed in their learning, well done Cooper! My second award this week went to Jackson Cheesley for his improved mindset when approaching all tasks within the classroom, especially challenging tasks where he displays a can-do attitude to solving the task, well done Jackson! My final award went to Annabelle Hill for her increasing ability to step outside her comfort zone and involve herself in all aspects within our classroom, well done Annabelle! This week, we are moving on from place value and number patterns and will begin looking at addition and subtraction using the numbers displayed to us on dominos. Students will be subitising the numbers on dominos and

then use these numbers to add and subtract through a challenging task. Students will be exploring the properties of a set of dominos to find different solutions in this challenging task. In literacy, we continue to begin each morning with independent reading. I am so pleased with the way students automatically get their book boxes out each morning and begin reading, it really sets the tone for the morning. We are now learning to write like Roald Dahl by developing characters in the same way he does. We are loving the way we can create our own characters by giving them a name and occupation, describing their appearance and behaviour and the reason why our characters look the way they do. We are continuing to use word of the day to practice our spelling and word knowledge. Spelling words will be coming home in term 2. Thanks, have a great week! Eliza Cunningham

GRADE 4/5 H NEWS Hello and welcome to week 8, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Awards: our awards this week went to Jesse Johnson and Maddy Davidson. Jesse received his award for some great thinking in maths, I loved the way he ‘worked through the learning pit’. Maddy received her award for independently sharing her thinking in whole class discussions. We love her insights! Well done Jesse and Maddy. We have a pretty full week this week with an incursion today Rock IT, a cyber-safety and social wellbeing workshop for our 3-6 students. We also have Rewards Day tomorrow and so far we are all still attending! A fabulous effort! We are however working pretty hard on our social skills, how we present ourselves to others and the body language we are using. It would be helpful if you could have a chat about positive and negative body language at home and point out to your child when you are noticing one or the other, it will help reinforce the skills we are developing here at school. Some things you might like to highlight that fit the positive category could be; eye contact, high head and shoulders, actively listening by sitting or standing still, smiling and turning towards the speaker. Some less positive body language might include; eye rolling, not looking at the person you are talking to, turning away mid conversation and slumping over. We are also focusing on the way something might be said, as often a tone can convey a message that words may not. At school we have watched a Behind the News item on the Corona virus. The students now have the facts they need about how the virus can spread. They have also had the need for hand washing reinforced! We are not being alarmist in our room, but as it is hard to avoid the general sense of unease in the world around us at the moment I feel it is important for students to be able to share their concerns and that learning some of the facts can support their thinking. They were quite pleased to learn that children their age are not in an at risk category! Thanks and have a great week. Lizzy Haldane

GRADE 5/6 D NEWS The excitement of having Stiofan and Daithi in the classroom has been terrific to watch. The students have thoroughly engaged in the singing and music they have offered; along with their fun manner. We are fortunate to have 3 great activities this week: cooking for some Grade 6 students. Rewards afternoon and Rock it for all 5/6 students. I do hope more students will try the dishes this week as last fortnight we had many not washed. It is a terrific way to experiment with different food tastes in a safe environment. In maths, the students have been enthusiastically involved in discussions of calories, sugar levels and food groups. This task is using the skills of addition, converting and introducing subtraction. It would be great to ask your child what they have learnt about sugar in our general diet. Alongside with this task, the grade are also being challenged with addition/ doubling problems. Practising addition in this manner has really given the students confidence with this operation. Literacy has continued to focus on developing strong questions to ask each other based on a text. This is in preparation for Literacy Circle/ book club next term when the students will take on these roles independently in reading groups. Writing continues to focus on mini lessons designed to develop the student’s writing. The grade will be creating their own narrative, using these mini lessons as a basis. They have been enjoying these lessons and are keen to write! In Integrated studies, we have focused on a range of ethical dilemmas and defined what a citizen of a country is as part of an identity unit. My students of the week are Amelia Draper, Blake Smit and Josh Cheesley. Amelia isn’t afraid to take risks in her learning; demonstrating deep thinking when solving maths challenges. She analyses the task to find a pattern and is not afraid of recognising when she has made a mistake. But rather, enthusiastically goes about resolving the question. Josh impressed me when he used his own initiative to put the information from a challenging task carefully into a table, to display the answers so patterns could be seen more clearly. Blake is becoming a more enthusiastic writer. He participates in all mini lessons and is often keen to share his efforts with me, showing a sense of pride with himself. Have a wonderful week, Ms Downe.

GRADE 5/6 M NEWS Students of the week. Arlington Nguyen received an award for her excellent attitude to school and learning. Beau Buck-McKimmie received an award for his great work in maths problem solving last week. He persisted to find “the rule” and then effectively applied it to solve the task. Well done Beau. Jayde Hill received an award for her work in reading. Jayde is independently applying a range of comprehension strategies to help her understand the text. Keep up the great work Jayde. Rockit Today our students participated in the Rockit Program. Our students participated in the Belonging Workshop, which focused on building resilient relationships. This was a great opportunity for our students to participate in activities that reinforced our school values. Rewards Day I would like to remind all parents and students that rewards day is a privilege and a reward for excellent behaviour throughout the term. Unfortunately, I have some students not participating in rewards day this term. I do hope that the students have reflected on their behaviour and I am confident they will make wise choices in the future. I am hopefully that I will have 100% attendance in all future rewards days. Nagle College Visit This Thursday past students from Toorloo will come to speak to our grade six students about their Nagle experience and the transition from primary to secondary school. Our students will have the opportunity to ask questions and find out more about the transition process. Have a great week. Ali Mackie

SPORT AND PE NEWS

Students of the week: The awards go to Noah Hobbs what a super skipper! He can skip 29 long rope skips in a row – so now the challenge is… can he get 50? Flynn Whelan and Sibella Mobourne have both had a leap of mindset last week, which has helped them to skip with the long rope for the first time. They watched the other skippers and then practiced, practiced and practiced again! Kids Choice for Grade 5/ 6 continues. Well done Jaz, Jayde and Lailani for their creative game “Disco Ball” that was a cross between number basketball and dancing; and Amelia and Makayla for their game of “Skid Ball”, an innovation on Zoom Ball. Lots of learning and collaboration going on! We have been learning how hard it is to explain something when it’s windy…welcome to my world. Grade 3/4s have been learning to play Skittles and Zoom Ball, competitive minor games that give us more opportunity to practise being a good sport, being resilient and self-regulating emotions in the heat of the game. Preps and Grade 1/2s have been further practising Jump Rope activities and really challenging themselves to do skip further. We are noticing that it sometimes takes a lot of practice to learn new skills in PE. Students have been encouraged to focus, watch others and just “have a go” as strategies to help us learn when being introduced to movement challenges. It’s fun too, and makes us feel a bit hot and puffed. Parkrun Lakes Entrance With cross country just around the corner for the Grade 3-6s, why not get some training in with your local community? Every Saturday morning at 8.00 am, the event takes place at Lakes Entrance Rotunda, Memorial Park, Esplanade, Lakes Entrance. 5 km run/walk, register online at:

http://www.parkrun.com.au/lakesentrance/ It’s free. It’s for everyone. Whether you’re young or old, male or female, fit or unfit, able-bodied or not, you’re always welcome. It’s not about racing, it’s about running. Children under 11 years old must be fully supervised by an adult.
