Andre Neumann started Italia Pizzeria and Pasta, FairviewCenter’s latest pizzeria, just so his mother could retire.Gisela Neumann had operated the Euro Deli at the 149 North

Fairview Avenue location for over seven years, working sixdays a week, 12 hours a day. When she began thinking aboutretirement, she started looking for buyers. When they couldn’t find anyone that would fit the bill, Andre

Neumann opted to take the place over last July. Always a fan ofItalian food, Neumann consulted with the head chef and beganplans to make the place over into a pizzeria.Neumann followed the, “Good food, good service” model

towards that end. Almost everything at Italia is made on thespot, whether it’s the meat sauce, the croutons, or even thesauerkraut. While an Italian place in a similar vein to PrestoPasta, Italia has kept some of Euro Deli’s more popular dishes,

including his mother’s popular potato salad, and offers its shareof sandwiches, salads, and hamburgers. “We try to do anything that could make us better and more

unique,” Neumann said. While not a full service restaurant per Fairview Center rules,

Neumann takes pride in ensuring customers have a rewardingexperience. Italia can make almost any substitutions—every-thing’s cooked to order. He also makes a point of having staff check in to make sure

the diners are enjoying themselves. He remembers a family thathad gone to neighboring Panda Express and took their meal toItalia’s outside tables. The daughter started getting upset, and Neumann came over

with some balloons and told the family even though they didn’torder here, he wanted them to enjoy their dinner there. They’renow regulars.

By now, everyone has ventured an opinion about LosAngeles' newest work of art – the 340 ton 21.5' x 21.5' graniterock to be included in a sculpture on LACMA's campus. Thispast week the rock arrived unscathed at the Los AngelesCounty Museum of Art to much fan-fare. Watching the livenightly web cam of its 11-night journey to LA from aRiverside County quarry, I learned that some people love LA'snew pet rock and some people are steaming mad at the sheerexpense of moving 340 tons 85 miles at a snail's pace, over

special roads, avoiding bridges, removingtraffic lights and power lines, in a heroicstruggle against reality. So what will this rock be? Will it be

art? Well, it is slated to be the centerpieceof artist Michael Heizer's "LevitatedMass," a sculpture composed of a 456'long trough dug into the earth north ofWilshire Boulevard's Resnick Pavilion, from which two steel rails will emergewhich will cradle the rock. The pit will be15' deep. The rock will sit at ground levelon these rails, and those of us braveenough to walk gradually down the 456'long ramp are promised to experience the

340 ton rock "floating" above our heads. The world press review published in "Observatoire du Land

Art" states: "Taken whole, ‘Levitated Mass’ speaks to theexpanse of art history, from ancient traditions of creating art-works from monolithic stone, to modern forms of abstractgeometries and cutting edge feats of engineering." Further,LACMA's Nancy Thomas, Curator of Egyptian Art, comparesthis rock with Egyptian monuments on LACMA's blog"Unframed": "Nearly 4000 years later, the ‘Colossi ofMemnon’ of Ancient Egypt remain landmarks of human inge-nuity. Certainly Michael Heizer's ‘Levitated Mass’ at LACMAwill intrigue visitors to the West Coast of this continent formany centuries to come." In a rather unfortunate analogy, thedescent into the underworld from which to view a 340 tonrock hanging above our heads is compared to EgyptianPyramid tombs. So let's recap what it took to move a 340 ton rock 85 miles

to become a monolithic sculpture, equal to the Egyptian"Colossi." LA's rock is actually a pale second in heft to thatenormous Egyptian sculpture at the Temple of Ramses II atThebes; that Egyptian rock sculpture was 62' high andweighed 1000 tons. Egypt beats LA by 660 tons! Which begsthe question – how did the Egyptians move that rock? What I can tell you is how the Angelinos did their rock

move. LACMA's director Michael Govan and his team spent

a year in "logistics planning." The outline? Hire EmmertInternational, a specialized engineering firm best known, pre-vious to its entry into the art world, for moving nuclear gener-ators and missiles. If you check out LACMA's press onYouTube, you will see Emmert International's project managerJohn Bowsher explaining what appears to be a personal chal-lenge. First, he needed to construct a custom transport thingaround the boulder, a carriage about 200' long and 3 freewaylanes wide. That meant that roads had to be cut out from theRiverside quarry. Then the real challenge began – the legalpaperwork. Permits were required because public utility lineswere taken down and put right back up after the rock passed.22 municipalities and freeways and roads for the 85 mile triphad to give permission, which meant permits from the State,as well as Riverside, San Bernardino, and LA counties andeach town the rock visited. Emmert had the equally challeng-ing task of ascertaining the rock's route and waiting for thosepermits. Thankfully, the rock didn't grace Santa Barbarabecause the rock might never have been "permitted," or possi-bly would have waited geological eons, awaiting our crepus-cular permitting process to slowly unfold. On the way to LA, roads had to be closed, around the clock

police escort rotated for 11-nights, and LACMA had to planrock parties for towns such as Bixby Knolls, which, becauseof its small size, was rocked to see such glorious traffic.Speaking of small town traffic, how did Emmert turn a 200'long vehicle weighing 400 tons on a small main street? As theparade passed by, stop lights had to be removed and replaced,

charge of bias intimidation against Tyler Clementi, 18, who commit-ted suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge threedays after learning his gay encounter was seen by webcam.Ravi, who invited others to watch the feed from the camera

mounted on top of his computer, was not charged with causingClementi's death.Ravi, an Indian citizen who has lived most of his life in the U.S.,

will be sentenced on May 21 and remains free on $25,000 bail aftersurrendering his passport. He faces possible deportation.

Fed revises stress test losses

ASK SETH & BRAD

The Federal Reserve bank said on Friday it had made mistakes incalculating bank losses in stress test results released this week. But the Federal Reserve noted the revisions - which affect

Citigroup, Bank of America, and three others - have no effect on keyfigures like capital ratios, which estimate how bank reserves wouldfare under scenarios imagined by the tests, which include skyrock-eting unemployment, a tanking market and a deep recession. In results first released on Tuesday, the Fed gave glowing marks

to most of the large banks, passing 15 out of 19 tested, and under-scoring the recovery of the financial sector. But the central bank called out a few laggards, including

Citigroup, forcing it and others to revise planned share buybacksand dividends. In revised figures released on Friday, the Fed reduced Citi's loss-

es on first lien mortgages from $9.3 billion to $8.9 billion under thestressed scenario. The change occurred after the Fed decided toremove foreign mortgages from that calculation.

Maybe it is just me but it seems asthough there are more stories aboutactors, athletes or the famous running intofinancial troubles. People that have madetens of millions over their careers thatyou would expect to be financially set forlife. In doing a little research, we foundwhat we expected; six common themesthat lead to their ruin that are mostlyavoidable.Sports Illustrated published a study

that found that 78% of NFL players filedfor bankruptcy within two years of retirement from football. The NBA faired better at five years and 60% but still startling. Some of the famous professional athletes that have filed for

bankruptcy or have been publicly reported to have hit hardtimes (name and estimated lifetime earnings in millions):Holyfield-250, Taylor-50, Pippen-120, Sprewell-50, Vick-130,Tyson-300, Laettner-60, Lsmael-20 and Clark-20 to name afew.Entertainers are not exempt with well publicized financial

troubles hitting Kim Basinger, Mick Fleetwood, Willie Nelson(16.7 million IRS debt at one time), Larry King, Tom Petty,Elton John, Walt Disney, Burt Reynolds, Wayne Newton andthe list goes on (going all the way back to include MarkTwain and Rembrandt). Some people say our currency is bankrupt today and that

may be somewhat true with Grant, Lincoln and Jefferson alldeclaring bankruptcy at one time. One other President,William McKinley filed for bankruptcy protection as well.We have left off a famous lottery winner who blew

16.2million but you get the idea, money only allows for finan-cial security only if you steward it well. So what are some ofthe common themes to the downfall? Most of the troublesseem to stem from the same common challenges everyoneencounters; over spending, divorce, legal problems, leverage, really bad investments and tax troubles. When you make hundreds of millions and lose it, that

means you did not follow the number one rule for wealth cre-

ation, pay yourself first. Take a portionof your earnings and put it aside in liq-uid diversified investments. BORING.Maybe but it works.Leverage can be a key to making

great wealth but it is also a commoncause of financial destruction. Forexample, if you borrow $800,000 on a$1,000,000 property and the valueincreases 20% to $1.2mil, you justmade 100%. How can that be? Well, you invested $200k and the bank put in

the remaining $800k. If you cash out this hypothetical trans-action assuming no costs involved, you get $400k (1.2m-800k), doubling your initial investment.Let’s make it go the other way, the property loses 20%,

dropping from $1mil to 800k in value, you now lost 100% ofyour investment.People borrow money to buy their home but what generally

happens if they can’t afford the mortgage any longer? It getsforeclosed, their credit is tarnished but generally their otherassets are untouched. But if you take out loans for businessventures or real estate investments, those structures are oftenrecourse against your entire net worth vs. just the property(non-recourse).Affluent people that get into business with less financially

well off partners often times come to the shocking realizationthat they are the target of collection if something goes wrong.Just because you are one of the partners in a deal gone south, does not mean that all the partners will be sought after for col-lections.Most loan agreements do not separate out the liability per

the percentage ownership in a deal. The lender often timescomes after the deepest and easiest pocket to go after, leavingthe partners to figure out how to settle up amongst them-selves.The overspending issues in the country are a societal prob-

lem that applies to the wealthy as well. Why would anyone

think that the more money people make, themore they would save? That means there ismore to spend. And that is one if not thebiggest problems that we saw in a lot of thesedownfall stories. People making a lot, spend-ing more, taking on debts to fill holes. When people follow this path, they seem to

pay less attention to one major bill, the IRS.Whether it is the attempt to initiate taxdodges that don’t work, taking aggressivepositions or simply not paying, you don’twant to ever get into a situation where youhave to liquidate assets to pay the government(i.e. Nicholas Cage most recently). When it comes to investments, maybe it is

the artistic side of the mind or the aggressive

“win at all costs” mentality in athletes butthey tend to make some really bad decisions. The usual culprit is the restaurant, night club, business with friends or a land developmentdeal. All investments that typically carrytremendous risks and leverage. Of course theBORING stuff does not appeal…that onlyappeals to someone like Warren Buffet (3rdranked wealthiest person in the world…livingin his same Omaha house he bought in 1958).All of the people in this story could have

utility lines had to be taken down and putback up. And all this had to happen at night. When the rock arrived on Wilshire Blvd at3am last Saturday, Angelinos donned sillycostumes and came out in droves to meet therock. Yet many townsfolk in 22 municipalitieson its way asked "why?"What did it cost and who paid for all this?

The project so far has been just to move therock; the complete art piece has yet to be fin-ished, to which 4 acres of the museum's cam-pus is devoted. "Most" of the money, saysLACMA's press, is coming from privatedonations and museum buddies: some ofthese are Terry and Jane Semel, and RobertDaly and Carole Bayer Sager, and transporta-tion is largely funded by the Korean shippingcompany Hanjin. How much? So far $10 mil-lion. A trip which, if we drove in myChrysler, would take one hour, Riverside toLA, took 11 nights and hundreds of engi-neers, and, according to the LA Times, gath-ered as many as 20,000 lookie-loos in LongBeach alone as the transport team tried tocross the LA River, average speed 4 mph.I am withholding judgment as an art critic

until I see "Levitated Mass" finished – whichis supposed to be soon, they say, at LACMA.I will have some trepidation, however, aboutwalking under 340 tons hanging above me: Ifeel like I did that already in my first divorce.Ominously, LACMA's Curator of Egyptologymakes a terrifying parallel on her blog"Reflecting on Master Movers of Stone."Nancy Thomas says, "In some ways, walkingbeneath the huge 340 ton monolith ofMichael Heizer's ‘Levitated Mass’ atLACMA will be similar to the modern experi-ence of entering the burial chambers ofEgypt's pyramid (tombs) with knowledge thatmulti-ton slabs support the ceiling above andyou're standing under the weight of an enor-mous constructed human movement." A par-allel a bit too close, I fear. Imagine beingunderground, under that rock, and askingyourself, "What earthquake?" or "Isn't thatprehistoric, fathomless tar pit just a few stepsaway?" Never mind thinking about theweightier questions, such as, what is art, andwhat is spectacle, when you are underneaththat bad boy!

It all started with RichardGere. Five years ago, CathyRives was watching Gere slideacross the dance floor in hisfilm “Shall We Dance?” whenshe turned to her husband andsaid, “Why don’t we try that?”She’s never looked back.Next month, she will be

competing in New York at theArthur Murray World Dance-O-Rama celebrating the orga-nization’s 100th anniversaryand she’s getting ready, sewing on sequinsand polishing her pumps. During the day, the dancer is a doctor.

Rives has worked as a psychiatrist at UCSB’sstudent health services since 2001. Shemoved here from Atlanta with her husband in1995 when they both began teaching atPacifica University. While working, Cathydecided to attend law school at night, earningher degree at SB College of Law.“I always have to be learning something,”

Rives said. “I’m a really hard worker. Myteacher tells me I may not be an innately tal-ented dancer, but I’m innately talented as ahard worker.”Like Clark Kent doing that thing in the

phone booth, her metamorphosis isextensive. Ordinarily she is dressedsimply, hair hanging straight, glassesgiving her a slightly professoriallook, but come time for dancing, upgoes the hair, on go the eyelashes, the swirling dress and voila!Rives, 59, is quite the fox.“I never had contact lenses, never

put on makeup, hardly ever wore abra until I went to Arthur Murray’s.”Her repertoire includes 18 differentdances and she has become a regular

at the local competitions. For many of us baby boomers, dancing in

the 60s and 70s was a do-your-own-thing,groove-to-the-music affair. There was alwaysthat awful moment when you held yourbreath, praying your date was going to becool and not some sort of geeky contortionistflailing to the music. Then came disco, a dif-ferent kind of hell, and by the time hip-hopshowed up, we were pretty much out of thegame. Enter ballroom dancing...Paul Hermanson, co-owner with his wife

of the local Arthur Murray studio and a late-comer to dance himself, said: “Anyone candance. You don’t have to be Fred and Ginger

to enjoy dancing.” Hermanson, who used to act in the dinnertheatre circuit in the midwest, now emcees 16 competitionsthroughout the United States. He points out that there aren’t alot of other venues where “a lady can put on a beautiful ballgown or a sexy dress and go out on the floor where peoplecheer you on.”Rives says she’s in better shape now than she’s ever been in

her life. “I come home drenched in sweat after a lesson.” Nowonder - her instructor is three weeks older than her son. Foranother local resident, 72-year-old Margo Kowalski, it’s oneof her favorite things about dancing. “I get to dance with allthe young handsome guys in tuxedos.” A retired banker,Kowalski took up dancing after her husband died in 2000.She’s been practicing for eight years and is 95 pounds thinnerthan when she started. Both women dance between three and five times a week.

For Cathy Rives, it provides a respite from her intensely emo-tional work in her clinic. “Dancing is the joyful part of mylife.”Kowalski, also slated to perform in New York, is delighted

about the upcoming competition. “You could have never toldme I’d be doing this...I’m gonna keep dancing forever.”Bravo, ladies! Take a bow.
