Après Ski Cocktail Classic 20193
Après-ski (French: after skiing) refers to going out, having drinks, dancing, and generally socializing after skiing.[1][2] It is popular in the Alps, where skiers often stop at bars on their last run of the day while still wearing all their ski gear.[3] The concept is similar to the nineteenth hole in golf. This can also happen anywhere in the world where there is snow. In the United States, the term is used more broadly to describe the atmosphere of ski resorts and ski culture, ski themed architecture and decor, and the ski oriented lifestyle in general. (*an ASCC add: we, of course, must include fantastic high-marque libations of every sort).

SINCE 1881 .COMTHE ASPEN TIMES
As Christmas 1945 neared, Herbert Bayer made his first visit to Aspen.
The Chicago-based in-dustrialist Walter Paepcke was in the early stages of his plan to transform this remote former silver-mining hub — its hardscrabble population dwin-dling to some 700 residents — into a utopia for the mind, body and spirit. Paepcke brought Bay-er out to pitch him on using Bay-er’s visionary multi-disciplinary skills as an artist and designer to turn “the Aspen Idea” into a physical reality.
Bayer agreed and stayed in Aspen for the next three decades, hand-crafting the town’s physical and cultural landscape driven by the Bauhaus ideal of creating a “total work of art.”
As the world celebrates the centennial of the Bauhaus art
school and movement in 2019, Aspen is looking back on how Bayer and the Bauhaus shaped
Aspen as we know it to-day. Bauhaus 100 festivi-ties include interactive art classes and competitions,
art exhibitions, lectures and par-ties that will run through August. This massive, yearlong collabo-ration includes nearly every arts organization in the Roaring Fork Valley and has its ocial kicko Thursday night at the Aspen His-torical Society’s grand opening for the exhibit “bayer & bauhaus: how design shaped aspen.”
“We are one of the epicen-ters of the Bauhaus, and it is incredible that in this tiny place called Aspen, Colorado, we have this unbelievable foundation,” said Aspen Institute curator and Bauhaus 100 committee

Expansion eyed for backcountry camp permits
The White River National For-est is working on plans to expand an overnight camping permit system to what it calls the core
of the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness.
Permits were required for the first time last summer in Conun-drum Valley to ease pressure and ecological damage around the popular hot springs. Now, the
White River National Forest is planning an expansion for back-packer overnight use at Capitol Lake, Snowmass Lake and the Four Pass Loop.
The permits for camping in the core of the wilderness area likely will be implemented in summer 2020, said Shelly Grail, recre-ation manager for the Aspen-So-pris Ranger District. There will
be extensive work performed in the field in summer 2019 to pre-pare for the expansion.
“The second phase is definite-ly a more complex phase,” Grail said Tuesday.
Conundrum is relatively con-fined and easy to monitor for compliance. Capitol Lake and

‘It’s a whole new world’A
few thousand people — many who even ventured past Aspen’s round-about — swarmed to Snowmass on Dec. 15 to celebrate the grand
opening of a project nearly two decades in the works.
Base Village began buzzing mid-after-noon as the fresh, new Limelight Hotel
opened its doors to the masses, and a bevy of skaters showcased their talents to christen the ice rink.
“This is huge,” Snowmass Mayor Markey Butler said of the event’s significance as well as the turnout. “It’s very emotional, in a good way.”
The Aspen Skiing Co. initially purchased the base property in 1999. Butler, who served on Snowmass Town Council prior to her tenure as mayor, has been a part of the Base Village conversations since construc-tion started in 2005.
“It’s been a journey,” Butler said of Base Village. “A tough, but great, journey.”
Skico and its partner, Intrawest Corp., sold the incomplete development to Relat-ed WestPac in 2007. From the economic downturn until the end of 2016, the finan-cially plagued project remained stagnant, and an eyesore for Snowmass.
However, since Skico, East West Partners

Town moves forward with plans for Coey Place worker housing
Get your paperwork together, Snowmass workerbees and hopeful homeowners, as the town will soon accept applications for its newest employee-housing on Stallion Circle.
Coey Place is aectionately named as a tribute to the late Joe Coey, a be-loved Snowmass community member and
longtime housing director who died in January.
The 18-unit, for-sale housing development proposed next to the rodeo subdivisions is designed for “a segment of market that’s not really currently able to buy a home right now,” the town’s new housing director, Betsy Crum, told the Snowmass Town Council at a meeting Dec. 17.
The demand currently exists within the village, said Crum, who moved to Snowmass
in April from Hartford, Connecticut, where she worked as executive director of the Women’s Institute for Housing and Econom-ic Development.
To meet these needs, the housing units will “serve a range of incomes,” Crum said, likely costing between $250,000 to $500,000. The homes will be “comparably priced” to the existing Rodeo Place homes with some
