Dear Parents and Friends of OLSH School Community, On Sunday we celebrate Palm Sunday and Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem. By the following Friday he would be nailed to a cross, ridiculed, humiliated and killed. They say a week is a long time in politics but Jesus last week was amazing. In his last week not only did Jesus triumphantly enter Jerusalem but he also cleared the temple of the salespeople, celebrated the last supper, was arrested, whipped, crucified and his week finished with his miraculous resurrection. It was truly an amazing week; one that we remember every year. However when I reflect on the week, the one thing that always intrigues me was the fickle nature of the people. On Sunday they were all cheering and exclaiming that Jesus was their King. Yet five days later many of these people were choosing a robber and murderer- Barabbas to be set free rather than Jesus. While there are many lessons in Jesus’ final week, this is one lesson that I think we forget and needs reminders. We judge Peter harshly for denying he knew Jesus yet we do not judge the crowd the same way. Sometimes it can be hard for us to make an independent stand when we know that it may disagree with the vocal people. Often it can be easier to agree despite the fact that deep down we have a different opinion. It’s very similar to when we talk to our children about peer pressure. While we support and educate our children in this it is also important for us as well. I hope everyone enjoys their Easter break and celebrates the great wonder of Jesus’ resurrection. Dear Parents and Friends of OLSH School Community,

On Sunday we celebrate Palm Sunday and Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

God Bless John

ADMINISTRATIONTHANK YOUAs this is the final newsletter for the term I wish to thank all those community members who have supported the school community during this term. I hope that everyone enjoys their break and stays safe.

TERM DATESTerm One will conclude on Thursday 2 April.

Term Two will commence on Monday 20 April. Term 2 will conclude Friday 27 June.

EXTERNAL SCHOOL REVIEWThis Friday we look forward to our External School Review at OLSH. We will have a number of special visitors at the school on the day. I am grateful to the staff and members of the school parent body for their willingness to be involved in this process. The visitors will spend some time visiting classrooms and speaking with the children. External School Review occurs once every five years. A report will be made available to our community after the review.

HARMONY DAYWhat a wonderful day we had last Thursday celebrating Harmony Day at our school. Our assembly coordinated by Sr Sue was something special. We witnessed some amazing talents in our community; experienced children and adults showing pride in their heritage; felt admiration as we saw children share their history; witnessed people wanting to learn and appreciate other customs and finally without doubt enjoyed the sheer delight from the audience (both children and adults) as they sat in the hall for over an hour. I also enjoyed the shared lunch and once again sampled food that I had never eaten before. To walk around our school was to witness people in communion with one another.

BUILDING UPDATEI wish to update you on the building projects taking place at OLSH School.

Stage 2 – Building of Block B

Block B is nearing completion. Lessons will be held in this new building from the commencement of Term 2. Teachers will be moving into the classrooms on Wednesday 8 April starting at 8:00. If anyone is able to assist that would be great.

Sr Sue and Trish Chandra will be moving into their new offices the following week.

The building and all the surrounding site works are due to be returned back to the school on Wednesday 15 April. That is, the community will have access to the court yard. There will be some things not finished that will take place after this date (e.g. the garden beds in the courtyard and the finished basketball courts) but this will not affect the operation of the classrooms.

Stage 3 – New Classrooms in Block A

Tenders for Stage 3 closed last Friday. Stage 3 will result in two new classrooms off the top floor of Block A. The top floor will also be refurbished as well as one of the prep rooms and a new Support and ESL room. There will be new prep toilets, new toilets on the top floor and a link to the new lift from Block A and the new Block B.

It is hoped that the successful tender will take over this site on Monday 13 April. This will mean the top floor of Block A; the secret garden, and prep playground will not be able to be used during this construction.

As we will have entry from the court yard and down beside the church again I expect there to be minimal disruption in the morning. However in the afternoon the pickup waiting zone will be near the library.

There will be some changes for the prep classes. These have been discussed with the class teachers and a separate note will be sent home with the students later this week. For Term 2 the prep classes will now assemble in the court yard in the morning. In the afternoon the children will be dismissed from their classrooms.

Page 3: TERM 1 WEEK 9, 2015 · 2017. 11. 22. · 10yr Girls: Penelope Bui, Anae Mu, Scarlett Premerl, Zoe Ryalls 10yr Boys: Nathan Fitzgerald; Oscar Douglas; Michael Chalk; Justin Lee; Dylan

ADMINISTRATIONThe prep classes will have different lunch times from the rest of the school. They will now have morning tea from 10:30 – 10:50 and lunch from 12:45 – 1:30.

There have been additional toilets built in the new block B. Eventually this will assist with the classrooms on the top floor of Block B But until the new prep toilets are built these toilets are for Prep only.

Stage 3 is the final stage effecting classrooms with the refurbishment of the school. I am aware that during these building works some disruption will occur but every attempt has been made to keep this disruption to a minimum. I thank you for your patience. These building works will benefit our school for many years.

PREP ENROLMENTSWe are seeking enrolment applications for Prep 2016 now. Children who are born from July 1 2010 to June 30 2011 are eligible for prep in 2016. Therefore if you have a child that is eligible for prep for 2016 or you know of any families that are considering OLSH for prep for their child please ask them to contact the office to have their name added to our list. Our facilities and staff are outstanding and our program is well implemented with the flow on effects for children benefiting them greatly during their early years of primary education.

I wish to repeat two important points from last newsletter.

1. Change in government legalisation late last year means that school principals now have discretion in allowing children born in July 2011 enrolment in prep for 2016. There will be a process to ascertain readiness for school. Parents will play an important part in this process. If you have a child born in July 2011 and wish to be considered for enrolment please contact the school office. A reminder that enrolment is not automatic for these children; the final decision is the principal’s.

2. For the first time in the school history last year we had more applications seeking enrolment for prep than we had positions available. Even at this early stage of the school year we have already fielded a number of applications for next year and demand for places is expected to be tight. Our enrolment policy is to give preference to Catholic families of the Darra-Jindalee Parish and to siblings of existing families. The difficulty we had last year was families waited until later in the year and there were no positions available. Therefore it is important that families (including existing families) put their applications in now.

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWSIt has been pleasing to see the number of parents attending the parent teacher interviews this week. I hope you found them beneficial. There will be another formal opportunity to meet with teachers late in Term 3. However, if you have any concerns about your child’s development at any time please feel free to contact your child’s teacher.

SCHOOL DISCOWith Block B nearly completed we will once again have room for our school disco. The first school disco for the year will be held at the end of week 2 next term on Friday 1 May. Full details will be available early next term but please mark this date in your calendar.

FEESThank you to those people who have finalised their March school fees account. March fees are due this Friday March 27. April fees will be billed and sent home next week. Please help us meet the school commitments.

ANZAC DAYThis year marks the 100th anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli. This year we will be participating in the services here at the local Darra RSL. This will take place on Saturday 25 April with our school assembling at the Darra Train station at 8:15 a.m. for the march and ceremonies. Our school will have its own ANZAC Day service on Friday 24 April at 9:00 in the church.

ADMINISTRATIONEASTER RAFFLEThank you to all the people who have assisted with the Easter Raffle, in particular organising and selling of tickets. Special thanks to Sandra Regano and Helena Westcombe for being the main coordinators. The Easter Raffle draw will take place on Thursday 2 April commencing at 12.00 noon in the school hall! Come and be part of this great event!

Dear Parents/Guardians

Re: Principal Performance Review

All those in Senior Management positions in Brisbane Catholic Education, participate in regular performance appraisal processes to assist in their professional development planning.

John O’Connor is undertaking such a review in Term 2, 2015.

As a component of this process, a confidential on-line survey is being conducted by the Ardjuna Corporate Services.

On Tuesday 14 April, a sample of families selected across various year levels will receive an invitation to participate in this survey. The invitation will be emailed directly to families by Ardjuna. This survey will be conducted over a two week period.

Community consultation is highly valued and I thank you for your participation.

Yours sincerely

APRE NEWSDear Parents, Next Sunday is Palm or Passion Sunday. This day kick-starts the celebration of Holy Week for Christians. We know all about the palms, the triumphant procession of Jesus into Jerusalem, the welcoming faces, songs and hosannas. Then we witness a striking shift from the acclaim and the welcome when Jesus entered Jerusalem to the calls for his death just a few days later.

Palm Sunday can be seen as a reflection of our own spiritual life. We can be prayerful, saying “Yes” to God and being charitable to others in words and action and then be quite willing to turn away from Him. God, however, is always willing to take us back no matter how many times we turn away from Him. The celebration of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter gives us the grace and strength to try to live what we proclaim. Easter is the high point of the liturgical year. Please take some time to show your children the true meaning of Easter. Easter eggs are a fun part of Easter but they are not the sole reason for Easter.

God bless and have a happy, holy and safe Easter break,

Linda Allen. A.P.R.E.

INVITATIONDear Parents, It is a tradition here at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School for the students to re-enact the events of Holy Week. You are invited to join us each afternoon at 2pm for a presentation of the final events of the life of Jesus. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we will gather in the covered area. On Holy Thursday, we will gather together in the church, again at 2pm. Linda Allen (APRE)

LOST PROPERTYA final reminder that all unnamed items left in the Lost Property boxes will be removed over the holidays. There are food containers and swimming gear waiting to be claimed.

WINTER UNIFORMBefore too long, we will all start wearing warmer clothing as the weather cools down. PLEASE ensure that school winter uniform items are clearly marked with the current owner’s name. Every year, an astounding number of winter uniform items are removed from the Lost Property stations. Please take a few moments to mark your child’s name with a permanent marker or name tags. THOUGHTS FOR THE JOURNEY

A Prayer of GratitudeWe are grateful for eyes that can see and ponder, for

taste buds that know the sensuous pleasures of eating

and drinking, for hands that hold and touch and feel, for

ears that can delight in music and the voice of a friend,

for a nose that can smell the aroma of newly mown

grass or delicious food, and can also breathe the air

that gives us life.

We are grateful for the treasure of loved ones whose

hearts of openness and acceptance have encouraged

us to be who we are. We are grateful for their faithful-

ness, for standing by us when our weaknesses stood

out glaringly, for being there when we were most in

need and for delighting with us in our good days and

our joyful seasons.

We are grateful for the eyes of faith, for believing in the

presence of God, giving us hope in our darkest days,

encouraging us to listen to our spirit’s hunger, and re-

minding us to trust in the blessings of God’s presence in

our most empty days.

We are grateful for the ongoing process of becoming

who we are, for the seasons within, for the great adven-

ture of life that challenges and comforts us at one and

the same time.

We are grateful for the messengers of God – people,

events, written or spoken words – that came to us at

just the right time and helped us to grow.

Extract from “May I Have This Dance” Joyce Rupp.

Go gently this fortnight,

Kids are naturally curious and creative! They are inventive. They are spontaneous and imaginative! The stories they create from an early age are a small example of their imagination at work. I love nothing more than asking a child to tell me about their drawing…how a simple circle to the viewer can be a castle or a simple drawing of a house could be the place where a mad scientist lives!

How can we continue this creativity into adulthood is a task for schools and families!

What can we do?

• Create a “creativity corner” – fill it with Lego, plain paper and pencils, cardboard boxes and sticky tape, dress up clothes.

• Take children on trips to the museum, library or art gallery – ask what they notice, what would they like to see in this space.

• Spark imagination – ask children to imagine what it would be like in a faraway country. What would they see? What animals would they encounter? What noises would the animals make?

• Ask children when they have their most creative ideas or creative moments. Give time for students to think creatively – during Maths or English or Science or Drama or preparing dinner.

Here’s to creative thinkers for the future!

Best wishes, Kim Davis

Today at Lego Club Miodrag and Sienna built a magical Lego house. This is how they described their creation!

At the Lego House we have a TV and two X boxes. The house has five security cameras. At the house there lives inside a boy called Derrington. At the Lego House we were making an orange car that flies around and can also drive. Derrington drives the car. The car can become a bed which is where Derrington sleeps. The house is magical and it can fly. Every night Derrington flies to the moon and the moon sings a lullaby and then he goes back home.

At the house there is a machine to turn electricity on and also turns on the TV. There is a switch and the light goes on and then it connects to the TV. You can’t see what makes the electricity because it is magical. There is a secret gun which looks like a vacuum cleaner.

At the house you can’t see the trees because they are also magical. There are also windows that you can look out. Nobody can see the house because it is invisible. At the back of the house is a hideout. It is filled with humans and if you hurt one, they will hurt you. If you close the door it will be peaceful again – just like our virtues assembly.

Derrington is also a ninja. He has a jetpack which can go super speed when he presses the red button and then there will be lolly and toy rain.

Miodrag would like to live at this Lego House because it would be lots of fun. He would love the toyroom and the machine that you can press the green button to get one lolly pop and press the orange button to get two lolly pops and the red button will give you 565 lolly pops.

Sienna would like to live at this Lego House because the house is invisible and it has a flying car. She also likes the car because it can do loopy loops with the jetpacks.

PREP This fortnight in Prep we have really enjoyed listening to our class mates present their Star of the Day Poster. It has been very interesting learning all about our friends. We have started to learn about the East Story and we have done drawings of Palm Sunday and The Last Supper. This week we have been learning all about the letter “P”. We are looking forward to having a pyjama and popcorn day on Thursday to celebrate our learning.

YEAR 1 Year 1 have been busy learning about numbers with groups of ten (ty and teen numbers) and learning to write their number names. We have also started to identify tens and ones in numbers and write them in their correct place value. In Science, we have also been busy investigating the different sounds that instruments make and how we made the sound. This has given us some great ideas for planning to make our own instruments this week. In Religion we have been looking at how and why people pray, the symbols of prayer and constructing our own class prayers. We enjoyed celebrating Harmony Day with our Buddy classes and families. We are learning to write a recount of the celebrations in English. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success.

YEAR 2 Well Term 1 is almost over for Year 2! This past fortnight our highlight was Harmony Day! We enjoyed watching all the fantastic dances at Assembly and the yummy lunch we shared with our Buddy Classes. Thanks to all our families who helped make it a wonderful event. It is great fun sharing in all the cultures of our wonderful OLSH Community. In Religion we have learnt about Saint Francis Xavier and how he was one of God’s Co-creators. In Maths we have been adding on and subtracting in tens and continuing to learn how to count money. We have been writing ‘Explanations’ in English, including studying How Tadpoles grow into frogs. We are still waiting for our classroom tadpoles to sprout legs! We have been travelling through continents and across oceans in Geography, and in History we continue to study the past and present, looking at the History of our own community. Our teachers enjoyed meeting

with our parents this week at Parent-Teacher night to hear about our achievements in Year 2 so far!

YEAR 3 Year 3 students continue to be busy working independently, with partners and in groups! This week during rotations we started using Reading Eggs. We worked independently to complete reading activities. Handwriting, guided reading, maths games and hard work makes rotations a great experience for everyone including our parent helpers and teachers! Check out the great photos of us working during rotations!

YEAR FOUR As the 2015 Year 4 Swimming Program comes to an end, the students take with them the value of each lesson, the weekly bus trips, sing-alongs and the peer bonding. In English, the students are practising their “Charlotte’s Web” oral presentations for assessment while in Maths the focus is on calculating time and ending the term comparing methods for data collection, including survey questions and recording sheets. In History, the students are identifying why some historical sites have been declared World Heritage Sites. In Science, the students are reflecting on what they have learnt about erosion and how soils, rocks and landscapes change over time. The students have also been using their Bibles to develop skills in using biblical referencing to locate and reference scriptural texts. Similarly, in Geography the students have been developing their skills in using their Atlas. Thank you to the parents who attended the parent/teacher interviews; and for preparing the multi-cultural cuisine for the Year Four Harmony Day feast. God Bless our Year Four families throughout Easter and term break. May the students return in Term Two rejuvenated and ready to continue their learning journey.

YEAR 5 The last fortnight has been a busy and exciting time for Year 5. The students have been hard at work preparing and presenting their Religion PowerPoints on Judaism. We have seen some fantastic work and the students should be very proud of their efforts. In English we have been learning about how the characters of Deltora Quest have

changed throughout the chapters we have read and we have also analysed what caused these changes to occur. The students are now ready to begin writing their character description on Jarred, who is the main character of the fantasy novel. Time and multiplication strategies have been the main topics covered in Maths over the past few weeks and we are now beginning to look at graphing skills. In Geography students have been learning to interpret patterns seen in maps and recognise the relationship between climate and vegetation within an area. In Science the year 5’s have been excited to start inventing their own animal, with its own distinctive

adaptations. They have started to make their animal design and environment. It is wonderful to see the creations coming alive! In History we have travelled north from Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) and are now exploring the secondary colony of Moreton Bay. So far, students have learnt about John Oxley and the significant role he played in exploring the Brisbane River and establishing a colony where Brisbane city now stands. We have also discovered some of the brutal and harsh punishments dealt to convicts by Captain Patrick Logan. We are all looking forward to our excursion next week to St Helena Island.

YEAR SIX We have been observing and recording changes and

reactions that occur when materials are combined. In this scientific

investigation we combined tartaric acid, sodium bicarbonate and

water. The reaction produced carbon dioxide which caused the balloon

to inflate. We used variables to test other combinations but this one

clearly showed an irreversible change. We have had lots of fun while

making interesting discoveries in our investigations.

Last week we really enjoyed participating in Harmony Day with the

are now busily finishing many

Great state. Great opportunity.

Changes to theSchool Dental Program

Metro South Oral Health Services

All children 4 years old through to year 10 students

0-3 year oldswhose parents have a current Centrelink Card, Healthcare Card or Pension Card

Students in years 11 and 12who have a current Centrelink Card, Healthcare Card or Pension Card

2-17 year oldswho are eligible for the Child Dental Bene ts Schedule

Good dental health begins at home. That’s why we’re making changes to our school dental program to give all parents the opportunity to be involved in their children’s dental care.

What’s changing?

We now ask that a parent or legal guardian attends every dental appointment with their child. To t in with busy families, we’re o ering free treatment at any of Metro South Health’s public clinics across the region.

That means you will now need to book an appointment for you and your child;we will no longer arrange appointments through your child’s school.

When you attend the appointment, you will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns and receive expert advice from our oral health professionals about your child’s dental care. Research shows that children have better long-term dental health if their parents understand their unique dental needs.

How can I make an appointment?

Simply call our new telephone line – 1300 300 850 – to arrange an appointment at a time and location convenient for you.

Who is eligible?

1. Time for adental checkup?

2. Telephone1300 300 850

3. Attend theappointment with

your childFor more information, visit health.qld.gov.au/metrosouth/oralhealth
