■ CONQUER CANCER RIDE

Wheelin’ Warriors ready to hit the roadLocal team raising funds and collecting members as they go

There are many things about the Wheelin’ Warriors of the North which could be chalked up as coincidence.

The picture on their team page at www.conquercan-cder.ca is not one of them. Team captain Karin Piche knew exactly what she wanted.

“My friend who was tak-ing the picture asked why I wanted the shot to be me holding my bicycle up in the air. I told her I wanted it to look the same as the ride’s logo.”

For Piche, the June 15 and 16 ride from Vancouver to Seattle will be the culmina-tion of a dream – literally.

“The name, Wheelin’ Warriors of the North, came to me in a dream,” she says. “I woke up with the name, and I knew it was perfect.”

The decision to put a local team in the ride, a fund-raiser for the BC Cancer Foundation, was one Piche had been thinking about for some time.

“I started softly recruiting with people I knew from my work in the fitness world in Prince George. I figured for some of them, going on the ride would be a good moti-vator.”

Piche has been involved in the health and fitness industry for more than 25 years, working as a group fitness instructor, personal trainer, fitness director and fitness club general man-ager. She had been look-ing at the Ride to Conquer Cancer for a while, but was taking a nursing program

and didn’t want to take anything else on.

“I graduated in August 2012 and got a job as an LPN at the beginning of October..”

With that taken care of, she decided to take the plunge.

“In June, a longtime friend of mine named Nola passed away from skin can-cer. She passed away while I was taking my finals, and in our class picture at CNC,

the flag is at half-mast for her, because she worked at the school.”

In mid-November, she “bit the bullet” and regis-tered her team with Con-quer Cancer. At that time, the team was one person – her.

“I knew nothing about organizing a team or any-thing, so I told them I would probably be calling to ask for a lot of help.”

The head office noticed

something about the Whee-lin’ Warriors of the North: The team was growing – fast.

”When we got up to around 15 or 20 people, they realized we were seri-ous about this, and they called me to see what kind of help I needed. They’ve been great, and the whole community here has been fantastic in supporting the team.”

One thing becomes clear

talking to Piche about the team and the ride, and it’s something other people already know.

“My friends know when I decide to do something, it’s pretty much done.”

The team, ranging in age from 16 to 72, now has close to 30 riders, each with their own reason for taking part in the Ride to Conquer Can-cer.

“We’re making an extra commitment to take part,

coming all the way from Prince George.”

Following a bake sale last week, Piche has ideas for a number of other fundrais-ers for the tea, including a dinner and dance at the Treasure Cove Casino.

BIG NORTH B3 BIG NORTH FREE PRESS - MARCH 2013

Tony Hind grew up in Vancouver, and received top martial arts advice while liv-ing in Japan.

But last month marked his first visit to Prince George. The chief instructor of Gastown Aikikai in Vancouver, Hind travelled north to run a seminar for Prince George Aikido.

The relationship between Prince George Aikido Sen-sei Mike Moyer and Hind played a lead-ing role in making the visit a reality. Moyer lived in the Lower Mainland for a few years from 2009 to 2012. During that time, he trained with Hind.

Hind has decades of experience in aikido. He is the only Canadian, and one of only a handful of for-eigners, to ever reside in Hombu Dojo, the Aikido World Head-quarters in Tokyo, Japan. He lived and trained there from October 1990 until February 1992.

At the Aikido World Headquar-ters, Hind received direct training from the founder’s son and successor, Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba, who passed away in 1999.

“That level of expe-rience is very hard to come by. Sensei Hind is one of our higher-ranked instructors in B.C., let alone Can-ada,” Moyer says. “His knowledge and experience, where most instructors have spent most of their time in Canada, he’s actually gone to the source right in Japan and you can’t get any better than that, the numerous years that he spent over there training. No other Canadian has ever lived at Hombu Dojo so that level of expe-rience, it’s not read in a book or watched on YouTube, that experi-ence is a craft and it takes many years to hone. For me, to have that technical experience is second to none.”

Hind, a 51-year-old Port Coquitlam product, established himself as one of the few foreign instruc-tors in Japan. He ran seven dojos in Tokyo, providing instruc-

tion to international students, CEOs, and other professionals. He also taught the discipline to mili-tary security officers from the Canadian embassy, American FBI agents, and naval attaches.

After living in Japan for nearly 15 years, Hind relocated back to his home country in 2001. Canada is also where he started his aikido path. He attended Kawahara Shihan’s first B.C. Summer Camp in New Denver in 1979.

Hind, despite his level of expertise, wasn’t blowing his horn too much dur-ing his Prince George visit. He appreciates the interest shown by the students in Moy-er’s club.

“He has a core group of people and the only way to build up a core is to train them, so they can pass it on to other

people,” Hind says. “That’s why I came up to help him. It’s not about numbers.”

The seminar included sessions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They unfolded at Prince George Aikido, located at 1200 La Salle Ave.

The seminar was between 10 and 12 hours long. Hind says he worked on basics with the stu-dents.

“I always focus on the footwork and the falling because, to fall properly, you can throw people harder.”

Sunday’s session wrapped up with weapon training.

“At the end, the knife techniques, it’s just kind of an award, it’s kind of fun,” Hind says. “It’s a martial art, people forget that.”

Moyer expressed appreciation for the

aikido instruction provided by Hind.

“That level, when you’ve trained and worked that hard at it, it is a very effective martial art, probably more so than some of the other martial arts that are out there.”

Works by local art-ist Melanie Desjar-dines will be featured in a new exhibit called The Pathos of Things (Mono No Aware in

Japanese). The exhibit offi-

cially opens March 7 at Rustad Galleria in Two Rivers Gallery.

Desjardines thinks a

cultural tour of Japan taken almost three decades ago – but still fresh in her mind – may have led to the creation of unique

pieces in her new series. She and others took the tour through the University of Alberta, in 1985.

In her artist’s state-ment, she says:

“We visited many historical sites, galler-ies, theatres and took part in traditional cer-emonies, observing the discipline of Jap-anese aesthetics and philosophies.

“Years later, I am convinced that many pieces in this series

that I’ve created are largely influenced and inspired by my observations.”

The artist’s fond-ness for odd and old things may have started with inter-esting art forms that emerged from the family sheet manufac-turing business and from her own “hoard-ing” habits.

“I’ve always had a fondness for worn and weathered things, and I have to admit, a

certain penchant for hoarding them,” said Desjardines. “Much of my collection of expe-rienced items in this series have originated from by products of processes of our sheet metal manufacturing business, in addition to bits and pieces that I’ve found over the years that may have struck my interest. I also find some pretty interesting imagery in pieces of rusted steel found in our sheet

metal shop.”Copper is a favou-

rite, a canvas upon which Desjardines finds that she can experiment with pati-nas and visual imag-ery.

“Building this series over the past seven years has been a labour of love for me, created for my own sheer pleasure,” she said. “However, I am now very excited to see it exhibited as a complete body off work and to be able to share it with others. I consider these works ‘living’ art – they’ve already lived, but will continue to live, age, and change with time as we all will.

“A celebration, if you will, of the bitter-sweet realization of life’s impermanence.”

The Pathos of Things (Mono No Aware) exhibit with artwork by Melanie Desjar-dines opens Thurs-day, March 7 with an artist’s talk and recep-tion at Rustad Galleria in Two Rivers Gallery. The exhibit will be on display until the end of March.
