Since its launch earlier this year, the Aman program has made great strides in raising awareness among employees about the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).Aman is an Arabic word meaning “safe and secure”. The program was launched when the Central Safety Committee embarked on a journey of change to constantly improve Marafiq’s occupational health and safety (OHS) performance. Aman’s aim is to raise OHSMS awareness amongst employees, help non-technical departments improve their Safety KPI reporting and ensure full compliance with the Permit-to-Work (PTW) system. The sponsor of Aman, Defallah Al-Dugish, says he is pleased with the energetic way in which departments are responding to the program. “Managers have a crucial role to play in the success of Aman. They are the ones who have to make sure that their departments comply with OHSMS procedures and guidelines. That is why it is so encouraging that individual departments are aligning themselves for effective OHSMS implementation by focusing on tangible Safety KPI measurements, coupled with strict adherence to PTW requirements. Employees are becoming more and more aware of Aman activities and participating actively in OHS improvement programs. It strengthens our corporate safety culture, which is also extending to our families at home for a happy family life.”Each department has appointed a special OHSMS representative to act as OHS champion. As department focal points the OHS champions work closely with Aman to promote its objectives and help implement its action plans in their respective departments.

There could be no room for any complacency. In fact, reaching this milestone was an opportune time for an honest inward look at some key challenges and answering serious questions, for example if the company’s action plans to prevent vehicle incidents were producing the desired results, and if our everyday safety attitude in the workplace clearly showed that every employee understood what the OHS

Tuesday, 1 January 2013 was an important day in the history of Marafiq. On this day the company became ten years old. It has been ten very lively and successful years, but it was not all plain sailing. Marafiq was hardly able to make a running start when it began running its own corporate affairs as a private company in 2003. Although the infrastructure was there – transferred from the Royal Commission – the new company was created from a mixture of various corporate cultures, for example Aramco, Sabic and the Royal Commission, and people from different parts of the world with their own languages, cultures and traditions. It was not easy for the new management to develop a unique Marafiq culture, but it has been one of the company’s most remarkable success stories. Today Marafiq can look back at a decade of corporate growth and development during which it has emerged as a tight-knit family with one goal and one vision.

Marafiq Celebrates Ten Years of Growth and DevelopmentTo commemorate its first ten years of operating as a private utility company, Marafiq published a special magazine highlighting major milestones, achievements and developments, and also paying tribute to the Marafiq Formation Team that laid the foundations for the establishment of the new company. In his message as Chairman of Marafiq, Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin Thunayan Al-Saud said he was proud to be part of the Marafiq family and proud of all the company’s achievements. He said the history of Marafiq instilled in the company and all its people a sense of identity, pride and purpose. It reminded them who they were, where they had been, where they stood and where they were going. Because Marafiq was cherishing the richness of its past and its collective experience of ten years of growth and development, it could be confident of building the right utility structures to accommodate

the needs of the present and meet the challenges of the future. The ten-year commemoration publication vividly recalls the pioneering work done by the Marafiq Formation Team. Six members of the original team tell their personal stories, remembering the special moments that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. The magazine relates all the ccorporate milestones and major projects and ventures along the ten-year journey, and Thamer Al-Sharhan, President and CEO from September 2006 to August 2013, gives his views and anticipation of Marafiq’s future. As Hassan Al-Qahtani, General Manager Shared Services, says: “The ten-year commemorative publication is a treasured archive item that will give future Marafiq generations a rare and very valuable glimpse of the origins of their company, and of the difficult task that their predecessors performed so admirably.” A very valuable publication indeed.

We all know that high cholesterol is dangerous for your health. High cholesterol means a total cholesterol level of 240 milligrams per deciliter of blood or above. If you have high cholesterol, taking steps to lower it can greatly reduce your chances of having a heart attack. For every 10 per cent drop in your cholesterol level, your heart attack risk falls by 20 to 30 per cent. There are several steps you can take to lower your cholesterol level. This includes losing weight if needed, being more active, and choosing healthy foods. Here are three simple steps towards a healthier, cholesterol-lowering diet:• Choose healthy fats. Avoid saturated fats because they increase levels of unhealthy LDL (commonly known as bad cholesterol), and steer clear of trans fats (unsaturated fats). Trans fats raise LDL and at the same time lower protective HDL (known as good cholesterol). Rather use the healthier unsaturated fats that are found in fish, nuts, and vegetable oils.• Go with whole grains. Whole-grain breads, pastas, and cereals help prevent your blood sugar go roller-coasting. They also make you feel full longer. Many of these foods contain fiber that can help lower LDL levels.• Make other healthy choices. Eat more fruits and vegetables instead of processed foods and sweets. Choose fat-free milk instead of whole milk. Go for low-fat yogurt and pick brands that are not loaded with sugar. If lifestyle changes do not get your cholesterol to a healthy level, ask your doctor if cholesterol-lowering medication will help to keep your cholesterol under control.
