Print.

Much of my more personal work has been in the realm of print. Discovering InDesign took my life-long interest in book design to a whole new level. Pictured to the right is the cover for the first edition of “Makers Space”, a series of coffee table books in which I explore the interiors of various art-studios in the Seattle area. My knack for layouts transfers to brochures, business cards, mailers, flyers, and other client-based projects. In the following pages you will find a few examples of my print work, from magazine spreads to business cards.

SEATTLE WA.EXPLORE THE STUDIOS OF WESTERN WASHINGTON ARTISTS

INTERVIEWS WITH GRAY PANTS, JINX ARTSPACE, AND MORE!

Local artisans showcase their wares in this thoughtfully laid out shop, which carries a care-fully curated assortment of handmade, sustainable and artfully designed paper goods, accessories, apparel and gifts.

With a heavy focus on com-munity which extends to craft shows and benefits, this small town boutique packs a big selection of locally made indie goods. Labeled “Best gift shop in Western Washington” for 2008

Located in the heart of down-town Spokane, this popular store has been a favorite tourist attraction and locally loved go-to for years. From handmade bags to vinyl figurines, Boo’s keeps a constant eye on the curious.

In a market saturated by quirky t-shirts, Red Boots seems to have broken free. This one-woman operation out of Belling-ham features brilliant designs, all of which are hand-printed on American made tees.

Located in Old Town Ballard, Monster is a colorful, playful space created to taunt the in-ner child. Take a walk through shelves upon shelves of locally-crafted paper goods and “up-cycled” clothing,

With a complete custom let-terpress service, this teeny tiny shop packs a mean indie punch. Hand bound notebooks and edgy greeting cards are made on-site. Paper Hammer also carries a wide variety of art books and a small collection of found “art objects”.

This art gallery aires on the side of elegance. Gorgeous modern paintings circulate the walls every couple of months and regional crafts line the 1st floor shelves.

The folks at NotForTourists.com summed up this little Seattle art boutique perfectly: “Crafty art you’ll want to buy and can actu-ally afford.” Functional crafts plus monthly art shows.

If you want to buy handmade directly from artists, there is no better place than this Bellingham CoOp. A collection of over 20 artists invite the public into their shared studios on a monthly ba-sis, serving up a wide variety of strange sculptures, moving paintings, and handmade goods while dishing out the sweet sounds of live local indie bands.

Catch this fantastic collection of handmade as they tour various fairs and venues in and around Bainbridge Island. With an ever-changing group of mem-bers, the surprise is a big part of the appeal.

A spread for Maker’s Space, a coffee table photo-essay.

The following studies explore 6 recurring patterns in nature: spiral, meander, sphere, polygon, helix, and branching. Images from original photos were simplified in to basic shapes, then replicated in a digital pattern. The final compositions were chosen as simple and playful representations of the shapes found in nature.

The following studies explore the concept of figure and ground in geometric and biomorphic shapes. The final composition was chosen as a playful representation of positive/negative emphasis reversal.

The following studies experiment with creating representations of texture through different media and methods. The final composition was chosen as the most creative expression of one texture using three different techniques.

Lomography LA Hello,

My name is Mara and I am an artist, graphic designer, maker, and photographer. I discovered Lomography accidentally in 2004, while searching for someone to develop a roll of Kodachrome. Knowing I had a world-wide community to back me up on my analog adventures encouraged me to put off the digital age for as long as I possibly could. Today, though much of my work involves computers, digital cameras (and yes, adobe photoshop), I still stick to my analog roots. Nothing quite thrills me like closing my laptop and jumping into the darkroom. I am incredibly excited to be applying for the Sales Rep position at the LA Gallery Store. As a Lomography fanatic, I know your products like the back of my hand. While I believe that Lomog-raphy products do a great job of selling themselves (as a graphic designer I am officially allowed to say that the package design is genius), I do have a great deal of experience in both customer service and sales. In 2009 and ‘10 I ran a small business selling art and handmade housewares; in 2011 I gave this up to do freelance graphic design. In both cases, I interacted with customers and clients on a daily basis, and my living (though meager) depended on them buying my product or service. On top of this is the experience bestowed upon me by the multitude of food-industry-based jobs which often go hand in hand with running a business based in the arts. One double-tall iced cinnamahazlemeg mocha coming right up! My most recent project has been single-handedly developing a magazine called “Maker’s Space”, which will give readers a glimpse inside the lives and studios of creative-types. This endeavor involves me making contact with complete strangers, photographing them in their “environment”, writing an account of our conversations, and creating handsome page layouts to tie it all together. So, yes, I am an outgoing people-person with a high level of creative energy. I happen to have entirely open availability and would LOVE to fill my days with Lomographic interaction!

I hope to hear from you!

A cover letter incorporating elements edited/created in Ps and Ai, finished in InD.

This informational brochure was designed to feel like a multi-page comic book, but retain the affordability of a black and white 8.5”x11” print. The illustration was done by hand (pris-micolor markers), final version in Ai.

Web.

The web design portion of my portfolio includes several examples of free-lance work. The most involved project I have been working on is a complete site re-design for Kings Road Cafe. Working with a very indecisive client has given me the “opportunity” to come up with several different approaches. Other work has included extensive icon design and the occasional logo.

BUY COFFEE GALLERY

At Kingʼs Road Cafe, we take coffee seriously...

Did you know that you can buy our coffee online?

...and we know that the only way to make perfect coffee is to start with perfect beans. At Kings Road we roast our own, guarunteeing fresh-ness and perfection in each cup we serve and every pot you brew at home. Some things are just too important to place in someone elses hands.

We have an heirloom recipe that blends five varietals of plantation-grown beans from three continents. Then we roast them slowly, in small batches, so that our brew is always exceptionally fresh and flavorful, never bitter. We don't sell any other varieties, since we've never found anything else as good as this!

Regular orders are limited to five pounds maximum, though we can fill larger orders for business gifts or fundraising. Please store your beans in an airtight container, and grind only what you're going to use right away. Our coffee is so good you'll get a remarkable cup even from an automatic drip machine, but for best flavor, we recommend a home espresso maker, Melitta cone or French press.

Three more potential design themes for the Kings Road site. The final example (this page) was arrived at after the client expressed a dislike for the traditional header.
