Standing beside the busyMU312, the main accessto the La Manga area, isthe old Monastery of SanGinés De La Jara. Theroad passes between themonastery and the hillknown as Monte Mira, orMonte Sacro - the sacredmountain. One notice-able feature of the sitefrom the road is the many beautifulpalm trees, some of them very tall and ofgreat age, that were a key part of thequiet monastery gardens.Thousands of visitors to the beaches andresorts of the area drive by this group ofonce attractive old buildings each yearwithout any idea that they are passingone of Spain’s most historic places. Saint Ginés de la Jara is a semi-leg-endary saint of Spain. He is associatedwith the region surrounding Cartagena,of which he is co-patron. A hermitagewas founded adjacent to the Mar Menor, and ruins of the monastery bearing hisname date from before the Moorish con-quest of 711 ADLike many Christian developments inthe Murcia region, the monastery is saidto have been situated on the site of anArab hermitage. Over almost a thou-sand years the place became famous forthe many miracles that occurred thereand devotees came from far and wide. ARoyal decree recognised the holy natureof the place and the monastery wasdeveloped first by the Dominicans andthen by the Franciscans. He was considered to be the protector ofagricultural labourers and of the fields.

Sailors also invoked hisaid against storms. In1541, Pope Paul III offi-cially canonized him. Hisfeast day is August 25th,a day for special celebra-tions in San Ginés De LaJara.Angels were said to befrequent visitors to San

Ginés and even helped a holy man erecthis home. The fame of the church andmonastery grew steadily and noble peo-ple as well as local people and travellersconstantly came to the monastery insearch of cures, favours or divine aid.Legend has it that after Ginés wasdecapitated in southern France, hepicked up his head and threw it into theRhóne. The head was carried by sea tothe coast of Murcia, where it was vener-ated as a relic. In modern times, however, the tide offaith receded and the ancient monasterywas no longer used for regular worship,The complex has been abandoned formany years and theextensive buildingsallowed to fall intoa state of dis-repair, thoughmuch has been saidrecently aboutrestoration.

Around 1692, LaRoldana made apolychromed sculp-ture of Ginés de laJara (now at theGetty Center).

Those that appreciate the finer things ofyesteryear shall want to make their waydown to Lo Pagan on Sunday November9th where you'll be able to witness one ofthe largest Classic Car displays in theregion for yourself. It's the IVConcentración Automóviles Clásicos MarMenor organised by the Club A.C.M.M.along with support and sponsorship fromthe Ayuntamiento de San Pedro delPinatar.

If last year's event is anything to go by,you'll be transported (no pun intended)back to a bygone era when such words ascarburetors, chokes, crossplys and roofracks were everyday terms. The CarClubs should be arriving from about 9.00am and included in their ranks will be acouple of dozen classics from Torrevieja'soriginal International classic car club,Club Torrevieja. On display I'd expect tosee such wonderful marques as the ubiq-uitous Mini, American classics (especial-ly from the 70's), 2CV's, Rolls Royce,MGB, Austin Healy, VW Beatle andmore than one or two Seat 600's, Spain'siconic 'people car'.

As we go to press, final details of theevent had not been released but I expectthe first cars to be arriving for the'breakfast' between 9.00 and 10.00 amwith all of the assembled cars setting offon a 'cruise' around the area aroundnoon.

If you are thinking of joining the classiccar community in Spain you'll also havethe opportunity to purchase a raffle tick-et to give you the chance to win a beauti-ful 1975 Mercedes 450 SEL. Now thisisn't a car for the faint hearted but backin 1975 this was the top of the line exec-utive Merc which packs a 6.9 litreengine. It's probably not the sort of caryou'd be likely to drive around townevery day but you'll certainly turn a fewheads if you do. For those looking for aclassic, you should check outwww.ClubTorrevieja.com as they have anumber of member's cars for sale plus,it's also where you'll find some moreinformation about the event closer toNovember 9th.

A Day Out In Águilas & Diving With DolphinsA Day Out In Águilas & Diving With Dolphins

We've been to the port town of Águilas(you pronounce it with the stress on thevery first A) a couple of times over the lastfew years and we've always had a wonder-ful time. Our most recent visits included aspot of diving, some really great food andseeing a dolphin. I'll tell you more.

We had a week off work and thought a cou-ple of days diving would be fun. We chosehttp://www.buceoaguilas.com right on theharbour, next to the train monument.

Diving around the Cabo Cope area you'llfind wooden fishing boats sunk to providean artificial reef, in conditions that areusually calm and clear with good visibility. You'll see damsel fish, grouper and manymoray eels, in fact huge morayeels, probably bigger than me!We also saw barracudas nip-ping about in the gloom.

We also did a cave dive at LaCueva de la Virgin where ashrine has been built with animage of Mary and her child. It's not exactly a cave, more ashort tunnel, where good buoy-ancy control is essential.

We had lunch on both days atthe very difficult to find yourway into Restaurant calledCasa del Mar right in the porton Explanada Del Muelle. It'sthe restaurant that's upstairswith an awning and a greatview of the port, but to find theentrance takes a bit of detec-tive work and a confident walkinto what looks like a socialsecurity building. It's worth findingthough. You can park right outside.

We were advised by our dive master toorder the specials, Arroz a banda andCalamari, which we dutifully did, andwere very glad for the recommendation. Awhole calamari was lightly battered anddeep-fried, then brought to our table andsliced for us to share. It was superbly suc-culent and just right as a starter for two.

The Arroz a banda is more known as aValencian dish and is rice with fish (andstuff), and again was yummy, but a littletoo much for us to finish.

On our final day of diving, on the boat onthe way back to the port, we saw a dol-phin. Our dive master said that only a fewyears ago he would routinely see 6 or 8 dol-phins on every trip, but this is the firsthe's seen this year. I think that dolphinsare like stars, the first to spot one gets toname it. I name that dolphin Flipper.Unique, original, apt, inspired!

If you see flipper tell him I said hello!

Águilas is right down on the coast in theSouth West of theregion. The castle ofSan Juan has beenreformed and is opento the public. It wasbuilt to ward offpirate attacks. It'sworth visiting thegarden at Plaza deEspaña which is fullof a collection of rareplants and shrubs, rubber plants andpalms and elderlymen whiling away afew hours. There's the19th centuryAyuntamiento andthe parish church ofSan Jose where theeffigy of the patronsaint is kept. Thetown's food marketand the railway mon-

ument are other places of interest.

Tranquil beaches with fine sand, hugecliffs and beautiful coves can be found atSan Pedro, Blanca and Los Hierros. LosHierros is dominated by the tower namedTorre De Cope, which has been attackedon numerous occasions by pirates. Closeby are the beach at Calabardina and thenatural park of Calnegre-Cabo Cope.

Well...here we are,November already andsome of us feeling aslight chill in the airand what with all therain we have had overthe past few weeks it's

been a bit gloomy. So what better way to cheer ourselves up?

"Comfort Food"......we all love it! Be it a greatbig stew and dumplings, cottage pie, bangersand mash with onion gravy to name but a few.I'm getting hungry even thinking about it, but ifyou think about it comfort food is always tradi-tional like "Grannies Home-Made Apple Pie"passed down through the years, real wholesomehomemade food. So with that in mind here's arecipe to get you started;

Ingredients2 tsp vegetable oil 1 onion , chopped 800g potatoes , peeled and cut into small chunks 1litre vegetable stock 350g frozen peas handful mint, choppedMethodHeat the oil in a large saucepan, then fry theonion for 5 mins until softened. Add the potatoes and stock, then bring to theboil. Cover and simmer for 10-15 mins untiltender, adding the peas 2 mins before the end ofthe cooking time. Use a slotted spoon to remove a quarter of thevegetables from the pan and set aside. Blend the remaining vegetables and stock in afood processor or using a hand blender untilsmooth, then stir through the reserved veg, chopped mint and some seasoning. Serve withbread on the side.

Tip: Some supermarkets sell frozen peas withmint, a great freezer standby if you can't gethold of any fresh herbs.

Thats it for this time, as always, if you have anyquestions regarding recipes or cooking tech-niques please feel free to email me [email protected] and I will do my best tohelp. For those of you who prefer to disrupt myrestaurant service by queuing at the Carvery uniton a Sunday evening to pick my brains, myselfand the 100 people in the queue behind youthank you, please use the email facility, itsquicker and you will probably get a more politeresponse!

And a little story to end with: I was eating soup at a restaurant the other nightwhen I dropped my spoon. A waiter walkingpast at that moment immediately produced onefrom his pocket and placed it before me. "Doyou always carry a soup spoon in your pocket?"I asked.

"Well sir," he said, "We had an efficiency expertgive a lecture here last week and he told us that30 percent of all diners who order soup droptheir spoons. So rather than make such frequenttrips back to the silverware station he advised usto all carry soup spoons to save time." I had to agree it made sense in an odd sort ofway. During dessert I noticed the same waiterwalk by, and there was a string dangling fromhis fly. I motioned him over and discreetlypointed it out. "Thank you sir." he said. "This ispart of the efficiency program as well. You see, the other end of the string is attached tomy, um, privates. When we male waiters need topee, we just unzip our fly, use the loose end ofthe string to pull ourselves out, and pee withoutever touching anything. Therefore we don't have to wash our hands andit saves about a minute each time." I thoughtabout this for a moment then asked him, "Buthow do you get yourself back in your pants?" "Idon't know what the other waiters do sir, but Iuse the soup spoon."

See you next time folks

Enjoy your time near the Mar Menor more, by spotting and identifying the manybirds which live and breed here. In this article I will look at Egret. There are twotypes commonly seen around the Mar Menor; Little Egret and Cattle Egret.

Little Egret are large Heron like white birds fre-quently seen around the Mar Menor. They are gen-erally seen alone and feed on fish and insects aroundthe waters edge and in the shallows. You can spotthem near areas of open countryside but also onbeaches. I have frequently seen them on the edge ofMar de Cristal and between Los Urrutias and LosNietos. They nest in colonies, a large colony may befound on Isla Redonda at the southern end of theMar Menor.

Cattle Egret are normally foundfurther from the waters edge, among herds of sheep or goats. They often travel on the back of the animals and feed offinsects which are attracted by the animals or disturbed bythem as they graze. The type of things they eat are; crick-ets, spiders, flies, moths and small lizards. Several birdswill normally be seen among one herd of cattle as food isplentiful.

Cattle Egret may be spotted in areas of open countrysideamong sheep and goats which are grazing. They are fre-quently seen in the countryside around El Carmoli. If youhave ever been on safari in Africa you will have seen themriding on the back of zebra or buffalo.

Egret are native tosouthern Spain and maybe seen in the MarMenor throughout theyear. Some Little Egretwill migrate to centralAfrica for the winter butmany remain. Both types of Egret breed in the Mar Menor during spring.
