Café solo is the basis for all Spanish cof-fees. It is a small strong black coffeeserved in a small glass, popular ataround 11am when workers come intobars for the main breakfast of the day.If you like black coffee and feel the solomay be a bit too strong, then try a caféAmericano which although not tradition-ally Spanish, is similar to a café solo butserved in a larger glass or cup with a bitmore water.Café con leche is the next most popularway to drink coffee, especially as the firstcup of the day. It is half café solo and halfhot milk and can be served in a smallglass or a tall thin glass. Another variation on the coffee with milkis a café cortado, in this case a strongblack coffee with only a drop of milk.Café sombra or manchado is also coffeewith milk but this time largely milk withonly a dash of coffee. The names sombraand manchado mean shade and stainedrespectively and signifies the milk isshaded or stained with only a smallamount of coffee.A truly delightful Spanish coffee is thecafé carajillo and if you watch it beingserved correctly, it is a pleasure in itself. A very small glass is used and into it goesa dash of brandy with a small glass ofcafé solo waiting. The bartender thensets fire to the brandy and with a tea-spoon, spoons the brandy slowly up out ofthe glass before letting it drop back downagain and this is repeated for a minute orso. When the alcohol has sufficiently

burned off, thecafé solo is poured into the glass resultingin a perfect morning tipple especially oncold days.The more rustic variety of this is regular-ly seen most mornings in bars where acafé solo is served with a dash of brandy,aniseed, rum or whisky and more fash-ionably, Baileys, Crema Catalana or acream rum liqueur. There is, howevernothing quite like a proper café carajillowhich must be tried at least once in yourlifetime.For those with a sweet tooth there iscafé bombon which is a small glass ofcondensed milk into which a café solo is

slowly poured. Thedrink remains separat-ed half black and halfwhite until it is mixed,lovely to look at anddeliciously satisfyingbut not so good for theteeth!

During the summer months there is ofcourse the iced coffee or café con hielo.The proper way to drink this is to have acafé solo or café con leche, and a tall glassfilled with ice cubes on the side. A normal day for any typicalSpaniard will always begin with a coffee served with hotmilk. La Manga del Mar Menor

The descriptive name of La Manga "thesleeve" refers to an interesting geograph-ical layout which has become one of thesymbols that best identifies the coast ofMurcia as a tourist resort: a chain thatstretches along approximately 24 kmfrom Cabo de Palos to the Punta delMojón, and is the natural limit of the saltwater lake known as the Mar Menor.Originally, what is now known as LaManga del Mar Menor was a bay opento the Mediterranean, at either end,volcanic reefs gradually held back thesand and sediment that was draggedalong by the sea currents to form a sandycolumn of dunes and rock vegetation andlong beaches in contact with two seas:the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor.La Manga is a narrow piece of land with awidth that varies between 200m and 1and a half km. It has natural channelsthat keep the two seas in contact witheach other, the so-called golas (canals)allow water from the Mediterranean intothe lake.

As such, the space was untouched untilthe 60s, when La Manga was discoveredas a tourist resort and underwent a

t r a n s f o r m a -tion whichincluded theurbanisationof the area andthe construc-tion of touristi n f r a s t r u c -tures, includ-ing hotels,a p a r t m e n tc o m p l e x e s ,sailing ports,sailing schools,recreat ionalcentres, super-m a r k e t s ,shops, bars,and discos.

La Manga offers a wealth of differentstyles of "cuisine", as well as a vast selec-tion of Spanish restaurants you will alsofind Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Swedish,Argentinian and English. With such achoice you cannot fail to find somewhereto your liking.

Due to it’s unique location between twoseas, La Manga is an ideal place forwater sports. There are sailing andwater skiing schools that run courses, aswell as windsurfing and catamarans.Because of it’s shallow waters andabsence of tides the Mar Menor was thefirst area in Spain to become known asan "Estacion Nautica" (Nautic Resort),with the prime object being to promotetourism during "out of season" months,especially in the field of water sports.

The Mediterranean side can be enjoyedby those who prefer high waves for wind-surfing and the entire coast also offers aseries of areas that are ideally suited andperfectly isolated for diving, such asCabo de Palos and the rocky depths nextto Isla Grosa.

The Geography

La Manga in the early 60’s


Although La Manga acquired it's actualform and structure in the 17th century, thefirst human habitation can be attributedto Neolithic Man. Some 5000 years ago avillage was built in the area of LasAmoladeras, at what is now the entranceto La Manga. This settlement was in theform of huts built in a circle and madefrom wattle and reeds. The settlementdid not have any form of fortification andthe villagers lived from the sea, by fishingand collecting the shell-fish of the region.

It is difficult to imagine today, but thearea was surrounded by forests whichreached to the edge of the sea. The rich-ness of the mountain range above LaUnion, now called the Sierra Minera,plus the exceptional conditions of theMar Menor, attracted settlers from allover Spain and together with theCarthaginians and the Romans, theybegan to exploit both the silver minesand the fishing trade.It has been estab-lished from the sunken ruins at "ElEstacio" that La Manga was used in pre-historic times as a "fish factory". Fromother treasures discovered at the bottomof the seas which skirt La Manga, theremains of various vessels can be tracedto the Phoenicians, the Greeks and theRomans and these were used to trans-port ingots of silver and lead, in additionto ceramic pots containing a variety ofmerchandise.

The arrival of the Arabs brought aboutthe introduction of a form of fishingknown as "las Encañizadas" (cane enclo-sures), a method which is still in usetoday and can be seen in many areas ofthe Mar Menor. After the expulsion of theMoors, La Manga was constantlyassaulted by the magrebs who constant-ly patrolled the coastline. To help defendthemselves against these attacks, theemperor Carlos and his son Felipe II

ordered the construction of three "watchtowers" on La Manga and another atCabo de Palos. The vast forests of pines,plus the different varieties of oak andyew were gradually reduced during theMiddle Ages and in the 18th centurytheir exploitation for fuel and brush-wood, aided by the strong winds from theMediterranean, added to the gradualdeforestation.

In the year 1862 thelighthouses at "elEstacio" and "IslasHormigas" werebuilt, followed threeyears later by theone at Cabo dePalos. The existenceof many submergedrocks brought aboutmany maritime dis-asters in the area.The sinking of the"Sirio" in 1906, withthe loss of over 300lives being one of theworst ever recordeddisasters at sea.

In the middle of the 18th century, in linewith the policy of disposing of largetracts of land by public auction, the fam-ily "Maestre" acquired the northern partof La Manga. Then, at the beginning ofthe year 1960, Tomás Maestre boughtfrom the family Celdran the rest of thepeninsular and in 1963, inspired by thenewly created "Law of Centres of TouristInterest" the plan to develop La Mangaas a tourist resort was conceived. Oneyear later the first apartments were builtat the very beginning of La Manga andwere given the name "Black Tower" dueto the appearance created by the tilesused on the exterior. This was quicklyfollowed by the opening of the first twohotels, the Entremares and the Galúaand from that point on La Manga hasgrown as one of the largest and mostinteresting resorts in Europe.

very popular holiday town with childrensrides and play area on the beach.

The Hump Back Brridgeat the far end of the strip is a ‘must do’ fortaking your visitors over - all you can seein front of you as you reach the apex issky - yes, it really is that steep!

If you really want to have some fun (andyou are in a hire car) let the visitors driveover it the first time, or just park in thecar park and watch how many ´newbies’get halfway up,then reverse backdown again, parkup and walkacross. It can bescary if you don’tknow what is onthe other side !!

Travelling down the strip your firstimpression will be of high rise apart-ments and a confusing array of trafficlights, but look closer and you will seesome weird and wonderful sights. Villasbuilt like castles, apartment blocks withbattlements, and impossibly narrowhouses.

The park opens at 7pm every day duringthe summer. It has rides and “fun fair”type things. There are a number ofbouncy castles with slides, the boats aregood fun and the children can go on alittle train or be cowboys on the horses.You have to buy a card with a number of“Pekes” on it and swipe the card for eachride. Height restrictions are strictlyadhered to so there is not that much forchildren under 120cm. but it is local andquite fun, so be sure to pop in if you arepassing.

Kittens are adorable and it is tempting to take one home without thinking of the consequences. Remember, kittens can be demanding and taking one on means you are committing to lifelong care - perhaps twenty years or more.

Bringing the kitten home

Moving to a new home is stressful for akitten. Give reassurance and time toadjust to new surroundings before mak-ing introductions to other animals or peo-ple in the household. Ensure all doorsand windows are closed and there is aguard in front of the fireplace. Ensurethe kitten knows where the bed, littertray and food bowls are.

The kitten's bed should be a safe place togo when things get too much. It needs tobe warm, dry, comfortable and draught-free. Buy a bed from a pet shop, or use astrong, dry, cardboard box with a hole cutin the side. It should contain soft bed-ding, and be placed in a warm, safe place.On the first few nights a warm water bot-tle (not hot) under a blanket may helpcompensate for the absence of the kit-ten's mother or litter-mates. If you hap-pen to have, or can borrow, a large securepen, this is ideal for providing a safe denand can hold the kitten's litter tray andbed. It is also an excellent way to intro-duce other animals.

Introducing other pets and children

Introduction to the other household resi-dents should be gradual, gentle andquiet. Children must be taught that thenewcomer is not a toy, and they shouldnot pick up the kitten but sit on the floorand wait for the animal to come to them.Playing stops when the kitten choosesand the pet should be allowed to go back

to bed undis-turbed. Thec h i l d r e nshould beaware that thekitten mayscratch andplay-bite.

Introducing a kitten toa dog or cat needs tobe done carefully. Anideal way is to have a large mesh pen inwhich the kitten can sit safely while thecat or dog becomes accustomed to thenew presence. Special care should betaken with introductions to some dogs.Those not used to cats need to be kept ascalm as possible, on a lead, and told to sitquietly. The kitten should be in a safeplace, so as to have time to get used tothe dog and to make an approach ontheir own terms. This may take quitesome time and requires patience andrewards for the dog for behaving well.

For quieter dogs, or those used to cats,introductions can be made using a strongcat carrier. Keep the dog on a lead initial-ly, placing the carrier on a high surfaceand allowing controlled introductions -short and frequent. Most dogs soon calmdown when they realise the newcomer isnot particularly interesting and you canprogress to direct meetings with the dog,on a lead initially for safety. Do not leavethe new pet alone with dogs or cats untilyour kitten is well established in thehousehold.

SocialisingSocialisation is important for your cat tolive confidently and safely in your house-hold. The optimum time for kitten social-isation is between two and seven weeksso, before choosing your cat, find outwhat experiences your kitten has had inearly life. A kitten raised in a home oradoption centre where staff are aware ofthe importance of socialisation shouldcope well with the move to a new family.However, litters born and raised out-doors, and kittens from feral litters, maynot have enough experience of humans toadapt fully to a family.


By thinking creatively, you canmaximize your meals andensure you get more dinnersfor your euro. Give yourleftovers a new lease onlife and make the most ofwhat's in your fridge. Witha little imagination, youcan serve Monday's dinneron Tuesday without hearinggroans of "not again!"

Making a curry is a great way to dressup your leftovers. We've given this porksalad a fruity feel by introducing man-darin oranges and raisins to contrastwith the spicy curry flavor. Your familywill be convinced they are sampling afirst-time creation rather than a next-day dinner.

Curried Pork Salad1 pound leftover pork tenderloin, or

boneless pork chops (cooked), cut into1/2-inch cubes

2 cups (cooked) rice , use leftovers, orprepare 2/3 cup uncooked

1 can mandarin oranges, drained,reserving 2 to 3 tbsp. of the juice

1/4 cup diced celery 1/4 cup chopped green onion1/4 cup raisins1/2 cup plain low-fat yogurt1/4 cup (low-fat) mayonnaise1 tablespoon curry powder1/4 teaspoon salt1/4 cup roasted peanuts, coarsely

chopped

Directions1. In a large bowl, toss together the pork,rice, mandarin oranges, celery, greenonion and raisins. Whisk reserved man-darin orange juice, yogurt, mayonnaise,curry powder and salt together in asmall bowl.

2. Transfer salad to a shallowserving bowl and toss gently

with prepared dressing.Garnish with choppedpeanuts.And there you have it,quick, simple and mostimportantly CHEAP.

And as usual, a littlehumour to end with.

I have often looked up and seen birds of prey soaring above me but have had verylittle success in identifying them, as they often fly very high and just look blackagainst the bright sky.

This week I am going to write about two of the most common birds of prey seen inthe area, the Kestrel and the Marsh Harrier. I will give tips on how do identify themand tell you which other birds you could mistake them for.

Kestrels are one of the smallest birds of prey,just the size of a pigeon, but with longer wings.The easiest way to identify them is to spot themwhile they are hovering, almost stationary,about 10-20m from the ground looking for prey.When they are in this position they hold a verydistinctive posture, as seen in the picture. Theywill often be seen hovering near a road especiallywhere it is adjacent to open rough ground. Oncethey spot their prey they will dive down to catchit. They can also be spotted sitting on telegraph posts and wires looking out for theirnext meal.

Kestrels often use nests made by other birds e.g. a crows nest, or they make use ofold buildings or holes in trees. They normally feed on small mammals, lizards andsmall birds. They are sensitive to UV light and use this to detect their prey as theurine of some rodents reflects UV. Kestrels may be mistaken as sparrow-hawks;however these are more common near woodland.

The Marsh Harrier is a much larger bird with a huge wingspan of over 1 metre. Itoften hunts over reed-beds, but may also be seen overopen ground, especially flat pasture. It flies low overthe area which it is hunting so that it can spot its preyand take it by surprise. As it flies it holds its long wingsin a shallow "V" shape. Marsh Harriers also perch onbushes or trees to look for food. When soaring they maybe mistaken as a Buzzard or Black Kite (I will look atthese two birds next month). The Marsh Harrier breedsin dense reed-beds so it is well suited to the Mar Menor.They feed on small mammals, frogs and birds.

Both birds are resident in the Mar Menor all year round, however, we see them morefrom October-April, as some birds migrate north during the summer.Lesley Singleton, Aqua Adicta
