Holiday Trio

In Scotland and Northern England, Handsel Mon-day falls on the first Monday of the new year. Hand-sel was an old Viking word meaning “luck” or “good omen.” Over the years, the definition changed to mean a gift given on a special occasion, such as the first day of a new job or the start of a new busi-ness. Today, children are given gifts or money on this first work day of the new year. Givers must make sure their gifts have no sharp edges. Such gifts are thought to “cut” the relationship between the gift giver and the recipient. Perhaps this is why gifts are traditionally put in a small bag or soft purse, just for good measure. The following Sunday is Plough Sunday. It is a strange sight to see farmers drive their ploughs to church so the machines can be blessed. Long before farmers could afford their own ploughs, the commu-nal plough shared by the whole village was decorated with ribbons and brought to the local church to be blessed. Afterward, the plough was paraded around town with much feasting and rejoicing. Work in the fields would start the next day, Plough Monday, or perhaps on Tuesday or Wednesday if farmers were more interested in feasting and celebrating than working. While Handsel Monday, Plough Sunday, and Plough Monday are commonly celebrated across Scotland and Northern England, only the small English village of Whittlesea celebrates the Straw Bear. In olden days, farmers saved their very best straw and, on Plough Tuesday, covered a man or boy from head to toe in the shape of a straw bear. The bear was pa-raded from house to house and danced for money or food and drink. Today, the holiday is no longer celebrated on Plough Tuesday but on the second weekend of January. The straw bear leads a parade of musicians and dancers to a barn where a great barn dance completes the night. Then it’s up for work the next day.

A Lifetime of Lists Commemoration. Jubilee. Anniversary. No matter which word you use, nothing is quite as enjoyable as a holiday, and there is no holiday quite like January 18, Thesaurus Day. On January 18, 1779, Peter Roget, the publisher of the world’s most famous collection of related words and phrases, was born. What drove this man to cre-ate list after list of words and their synonyms? Roget suffered many sad incidents. His father and wife both died young. Illness struck down his mother, sister, and uncle. List-making was, for Roget, a coping mechanism. By the time Roget was eight years old, he was already making lists of beasts, parts of the body, and things found in the garden. His lists brought order to a world that sometimes felt out of control. In 1793, Roget went to Edinburgh, Scotland, to study medicine. As a doctor, Roget travelled throughout Europe. Appalled by the filthiness of Europe’s great cities, Roget found comfort each night compiling lists of synonyms.

He spent much of his lifetime of practicing medicine and writing about science. He co-founded the Royal Society of Medicine and established the University of London. He even invented a slide ruler that calculated exponents and square roots. But Roget’s best-known work came at the end of his life, in his retirement, when he at last organized his many lists of words. In1852. he published his Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases Classified and Arranged so as to Facili-tate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition. Since 1852, Roget’s thesaurus has nev-er been out of print. Today Roget’s thesaurus con-tains over 230,000 words. Whether used by writers, editors, or crossword puzzle addicts, Roget’s life work is considered a treasure chest, which is exactly what thesaurus means in Latin.

(He also invented the slide rule in 1814 to calculate the

roots and powers of numbers).

Winter Fun

Winter is a time for skating and fun All which is done under bright winter sun

Snowball fights are a child’s delight Just to watch them is quite a sight

A snowman is made with the white winter snow

But when winter is over It’s time for Frosty to go!

Winter is for sledding Ice skating on the pond Nasty weather so stay indoors The night is for cocoa Ear muffs to keep warms Rain mixed with snow makes sleet

Snow Song

By David Cockrell

A li le snow must fall To make things bright

As my poetry starts to grow And I feel the warm glow Of somebody far  away

Like a song that lasts forever A li le snow must fall

For you and me.

Scripture Reading With

Edith Tice

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Horoscopes and Birthdays Those born between January 1–19 are Capricorns, or

Goats. Capricorn may be the zodiac’s most stable sign. Confident, strong-willed, and calm, Capricorns make excel-

lent workers. They always strive for success. If you were born between January 20–31, you are Aquarius, the Water Bearer. Aquarians are deeply intelligent and logical. They

seek truth for the benefit of all humanity.
