Twigs Winter 2004 1
HeadlinesIn the course of a day how many people does one meet who areolder than 65? How many institutions are at least the same age?My guess is not a lot in either category. As most people are aware,a 65th birthday is a special occasion!
Manzano Day is completing its 65th year as the only IndependentElementary School in Albuquerque. It is a milestone that we areproud of for many reasons. There is no more important missionthan to provide the best foundation of education for the youth of future generations. Manzano has done this and much more!
There have been constant themes to our school over the years. We believe in providing the opportunity for an excellent education. We have believed and continue to believe in Joy in Learning forour students. We further believe that we must prepare children to become life long learners so that they may go on to use theireducation to become assets to society. Manzano Day School has followed all of these beliefs during its 65 year history.
As you read this issue of Twigs think about the role our school hasplayed and continues to play in our community. No other school in our community can match Manzano Day School’s record as an independent school for over 65 years. Yes, we are proud of what we have accomplished, but recognize there is always room foradjustments and improvement.
Without a doubt, the greatest strength of Manzano has been thepeople who have worked so hard to create the school that nowexists. I am proud to say that it is still people that make us as special today as we were 65 years ago!
Manzano Day School, 65 years and going strong. Many thanks to all who have helped us in the past, and especially to the Simms family who founded the school,to those who are currentlysupporting us, and to those who will in the future. Happy Birthday Manzano Day School!

65 Years at Manzano1882 Franz HuningThe hacienda and 700 acres of landwere purchased from FransicanFriars by Franz Huning, a Germanimmigrant and pioneer merchant, in 1882. As his general store in Old Town prospered, he added west and north wings, forming acourtyard, and named the house La Glorieta which means bower or arbor.
La Glorieta, at the heart ofManzano Day School and on theNational Register of Historic Places, was built around 1662 by Don Diegode Trujillo as the Trujillo Casa DelEstancia, El Bosque Grande. DonDiego was born in 1612 in MexicoCity, and came to New Mexico in 1641 as a soldier. The building’soriginal size and shape are not
1938-1942Manzano’s vision and mission todayare consistent with its original offerings in 1938 of “high scholastic standards, individual instruction, music, arts and crafts, speech, health and character training, out-of-door program of supervisedgames and folk-dancing, lunch andrest if desired.”
Manzano Day School was founded in 1938 by Ruth Hanna McCormickSimms, an Illinois Congresswomanwho moved to New Mexico uponmarrying Albert G. Simms, also aone-time Republican U.S. Housemember. She founded the school out of a deepinterest in Albuquerque’s culturaland educational life. Mrs. Simmswanted her daughter and other children to have the opportunity toreceive a superior education.Housed originally in historic HuningCastle near our present location at the corner of Central and 15thStreet the school moved to its present site in 1942.

o Day Schoolknown, because it was partlydestroyed during the Pueblo Indianrevolt in 1680. The family fled to El Paso and returned in the late1690s to rebuild the hacienda.
La Glorieta served as headquartersto Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. A giant cottonwood, planted in the 1800s by FranzHuning, once shaded the Placita. It was the source of legends.Confederate soldiers butchered cattle in the patio causing ox bloodto nourish the tree. It was also said that desperados were hangedfrom its branches in the early days.Although it survived more than acentury and its trunk grew to a 16'circumference, the old cottonwoodsuccumbed to disease and had to be cut down in 1984.
Huning later moved into HuningCastle and gave La Glorieta to hisdaughter, Clara, as a wedding present.Clara married H.G. Ferguson, alawyer, politician, and Territorialdelegate to the U.S. Congress. They had four children all of whomwere reared in La Glorieta. Two ofthose children, Harvey and Erna, became well known authors.
Generations of Manzano familiescherish the history that La Glorietaimparts to our school community. Elizabeth Westerfield was the first headmistress and served theschool for 28 years.
Few places in Albuquerque exemplifythe history, charm and serenity of New Mexico as does Manzano. The history of Manzano resides inthe children who have beenenriched by the school. Since 1938,Manzano has been true to its mis-sion to develop the whole child as a creative, self-confident problemsolver, who is ready to contribute toan ever changing world. Althoughthe school grows each year with new children, new technology, andnew materials, Manzano Day Schoolalways keeps the well-being of children at its core.
Manzano Day School has been located at 1801 Central since 1942.

Manzano’s Exciting Future!
Ready, Set, Grow! The board oftrustees and administration aremoving ahead with exciting plansfor campus improvements. In aseries of articles, those plans will be presented to keep you informedand involved.
Over the past two years Manzano’sstudents have benefited from theremodeling of the lower schoolclassrooms, the construction of the“OAC” and the building of theEnrichment Center. Each of theseadditions to our campus hasimproved the quality of the educa-tional experience for our students.
What is coming next? We are in the midst of both raising money(Yes, you will be asked to help!) and developing architectural plansfor the largest and most importantpart of our vision for Manzano's students: the multi-purpose building. With input from parents, the concept is clearly defined andaddresses our most important needs including additional class-rooms; a larger, more modernlibrary; an airy, light art classroom; a more functional music room and a large cafetorium, suitable for both meal service and communitygatherings.
Our plans progress each day. Infuture articles we'll explore the features and benefits of each spacein the multi-purpose building, andhow campus security, traffic flowand play areas will be developed tokeep us a safe, joyful and effectiveschool.

Joy in Teaching
Eins, Zwei, Drei:Orff In Austria
This story begins seven years ago inthe old music room at Manzano DaySchool. Amy Butterfield had beenhired as a new music teacher forpre-k - second grade under thementorship of the 3rd - 5th grademusic teacher, Louis Loomis. Ms. Loomis’ teaching methodologyincorporates the Orff-Schulwerkmusic program: a total approach tofostering creativity and conveyingmusical knowledge and skills.Students use their voices to speakand sing and their bodies to moveand dance. In keeping with MDSJoy in Learning, this methodologyis dedicated to the belief that learn-ing about music — learning to singand play, to hear and understand,to move and create — should be anactive and joyful experience.
After seven years of teaching experience and various trainingcourses, workshops and conferences,
Ms. Amy happily found that shewas the 2003 recipient of theMDSPA Teacher Fellowship Award. This award allowed her to travel to Austria to study for one week atthe Orff Institute in Salzburg withpeople from around the world. Ms. Amy says, “I was able to fulfilla dream of studying in a placewhere Mozart, Beethoven, andcountless musicians had trod.”
The 2nd Grade Spring Program, performed Thursday, March 4,2004, was inspired by Ms. Amy’sparticipation in the Orff-SchulwerkInternational Night, at which 13countries presented and taught asimple children’s folk song, nativeto their country.
Her Salzburg experience was theprologue to another chapter in herlife.
“Seven years ago, I neverwould have imagined thatsuch a dream could andwould become a reality.I am extremely grateful tothe MDSPA for fundingthe Teacher FellowshipAward, MDS facultyand administration whoprovide tremendoussupport, and my friendsand family for theirunconditional love.Vielen Danke!”
— Amy Butterfield

Second Grade: Field trips to SantaFe to the Museum of Indian Artsand Culture one snowed out, theother rescheduled to March 10.We’ll begin working with digitalcameras in March. Students make alist of chores they do at home, actthem out while a friend takes snap-shots, and they use the snapshotsas a reference tool for a painting.
